Chapter 187: The Birthday Party of Divine Punishment, Part One

Time passes...

"The restaurant isn't that big." Ran looked around the booked Café Zoo-Too where Sekizawa Yumi was having her joint birthday party with her elder sister, Sekizawa Remi.

"Everyone here is a model, actor or celebrity." Sonoko gushed.

"So, you're my sister Yumi's classmates." Remi greeted Yumi's guests. "Enjoy yourselves today."

"I brought your photobook today." Ran stammered. "Could I get your autograph later?"

"I can take care of it right now." Remi assured. "Kushiyama-san, could you hand me the permanent marker in my bag?"

"Here you are." Kushiyama retrieved the black marker pen.

"This marker doesn't work." Remi blinked when no ink came out from the pen.

"I smelled thinner when I opened your bag just now." Kushiyama supplied. "Maybe the cap came off."

"You never put the cap back on tightly enough." Yumi sighed, digging into her handbag for a spare marker.

"They've always been like that since they were kids." Hatsune Tsuguo, a pastry chef and Remi's former middle and high-school classmate, cut in. "Yumi-chan's four years younger, but she's always been more put together. I genuinely believed it was Yumi-chan who applied for the modeling job. I'm Remi's former middle and high-school classmate, Hatsune Tsuguo." he introduced himself. "I'm a pastry chef who hopes to open his own restaurant someday. I asked the chef to let me make the birthday cake for today, so you won't want to miss that."

"You want to become an independent pastry chef and open your own shop?" Hanasaki Mizutoshi mocked. "Maybe your cakes will sell if you say they're made by Sekizawa Remi's classmate. Remi-chan, happy birthday." he greeted. "A bouquet for your birthday." he handed Remi a bouquet of roses.

"Who's the creep?" Sera's bad-guy radar was going off.

"Hanasaki Mizutoshi." Yumi informed. "He's a hair and makeup artist who's hit on and been rejected by my sister a bunch of times despite having a wife and kid. On top of that, he even hit on me the other day. But since he's a good hair and makeup artist, I can't afford to disregard him totally."

"So, that's why you invited us." Sera realized. "To prevent him from hitting on you again."

After dinner...

The hall's lights were turned off as the birthday cake was pushed in.

Suddenly, Hanasaki groaned in pain after taking a bite of his portion of cake and fell to the ground.

The lights then came back on and the party guests screamed in horror when they saw the dead Hanasaki with the words 'Divine Punishment' written in ink on his forehead.

After Megure's team was called in...

"Poison?" Megure echoed after Ami gave him her initial report. "The victim Hanasaki Mizutoshi-san ate something poisoned and died?"

"The cake the victim ate before he collapsed was most likely poisoned." Ami nodded.

"We even found a small bottle containing cyanide taped beneath the table at the victim's seat." Takagi showed the vial bagged as evidence.

"How did the culprit do that during the party?" Megure wondered.

"He apparently collapsed while photos were being shown with that projector." Takagi supplied. "It was dimly lit inside the restaurant."

"The restaurant may have been dimly lit, but wouldn't someone have seen a person writing on the victim's head with a permanent marker?" Megure inquired.

"Immediately after the victim collapsed, the projector suddenly turned off and the room became pitch dark." Takagi explained.

"If it was pitch dark, how someone write these letters on his forehead?" Megure asked.

"The victim's glasses were a novelty item that glowed in the dark." Takagi replied. "Since the writing is rather distorted, it seems they used their non-dominant hand to disguise their handwriting."

"Between the guests and staff, there are close to 40 people in the restaurant." Megure pointed out. "Identifying the culprit won't be easy."

"There are four suspects." Conan spoke up.

"The left side of the victim was blocked by the projector and our seats." Sera explained. "And the right side of the victim," she walked over to the other side. "An employee dropped and spilled a wine bottle in the dark. The floor is covered in wine, but there's no sign anyone stepped through it. The kitchen is through the door past the victim's head, but the kitchen staff said no one came through the door between the time the projector turned off and the lights came on. Excluding us who didn't know the victim. There were only four people in the area. These four are the suspects who could've poisoned the victim." she turned to the Sekizawa sisters, Kushiyama and Hatsune.
