Chapter 191: The Threat to Megure's Police Career

Time passes...

"What's the situation?" Megure asked, entering the crime scene in Tenma City at 9pm one night.

"We determined from the victim's license that he was Yamakabe Iwao-san." Takagi reported. "56 years old who lived in Hikaridai."

"The cause of death is cerebral contusion caused by a heavy blow to the back of the head with a blunt object." Ami added. "The estimated time of death is around two hours earlier, at about 7pm. Since we can't find the victim's shoes, we believe he might have been murdered elsewhere and dumped here."

"Inspector Megure." Chiba came in. "I've trying to get in touch with the victim's family, but no one's answering."

"Let's have the Hikaridai station look into it." Megure made a request to the Hikaridai station.

Three days later...

"We received an anonymous emergency call saying someone was dead." Megure related to Mouri at the Detective Agency. "When officers from the local station visited the victim's home..." he revealed Officer Kawai, the officer on site found the Yamakabe house ransacked and the safe open. After inspecting the house, Megure's team found the murder weapon and determined the house was the first crime scene. What was supposed to be a close-and-shut case turned out to be the opposite.

One day before...

"Inspector Megure," Takagi burst into the meeting room at the Tenma station with Chiba in tow. "We've identified someone suspicious in our investigation. They relentlessly hounded the victim, who avoided them."

"Apparently, he had many money problems." Chiba added.

"We noticed some other curious things about this man named Temukai Kyosuke who lives in Tenma City." Takagi stated.

"About three years ago, one of the suspects in a certain murder case was Temukai Kyosuke, who worked in a government office." Megure told his two subordinates in Takagi's car. "When I asked him to accompany me to the station and questioned him about his alibi for the time of the murder, Temukai reluctantly confessed he'd been secretly meeting with a certain businessman. His confession proved his innocence in the murder case, but his government office learned of his inappropriate meetings with the businessman..." he revealed Temukai had been laid off.

"He was just reaping what he sowed." Takagi pointed out. "You aren't responsible for what happened."

"He gets close to successful people and makes them write and self-publish autobiographies." Chiba read off his research.

"He pressured Yamakabe, who became successful selling imported goods, to publish an autobiography." Takagi supplied.

The next day, Megure went to Temukai Publishing with an arrest warrant for Temukai when Chikaba Yasuko, a supermarket manager, informed the detectives that Temukai was not the culprit as she was his alibi.

At the Detective Agency...

"You were set up." Mouri realized.

"He plotted to ruin my reputation with a mistaken arrest to get revenge for what happened three years ago."' Megure moaned. "I never expected my police career to end like this. I told the section chief that I was willing to risk my career to arrest Temukai. Temukai was just released." he informed after receiving a phone call. "I'm not resigning until I find the real culprit."

"This isn't like you, Inspector." Mour chided. "You can't end your career with a loss. I'll help you find the real culprit."

"Ojii-san." Conan voiced after Megure headed off. "The Inspector doesn't have to resign if Temukai Kyosuke-san is the real culprit, right?"

"He's got a legit alibi." Mouri reminded.

"There's something suspicious about him." Conan pondered.

A while later...

Under Megure and Conan collaboration, they made Temukai dig up the evidence of the murder in a nearby park.

"I see." Megure noted, the others cornering Temukai after he dug up the manmade weapon consisting of a steel rod and UV resin. "So, that was the actual weapon. You can provide us with the explanation." he turned to Mouri.

At the exact moment, Conan tranquillized Mouri.

"Temukai Kyosuke-kun, you plotted to kill Yamakabe Iwao and steal the money from his safe at his home." Conan declared. "You thought securing an alibi by killing him in Tenma City while convincing the police Yamakabe's home in the distant neighborhood HIkaridai was the scene of the murder, would allow you to get away with it. Transporting a body always leaves traces on the body. They would've been discovered right away that he'd been killed elsewhere and transported to his home. You knew that and used that knowledge to transport and abandon the body in a place near the scene of the murder."

"Meanwhile, if you ransacked Yamakabe's home, you could convince us he was killed there and then transported to where the body was abandoned." Megure realized where Conan was going with the deduction.

"Furthermore, the fake and actual weapons were essential to fabircating your alibi." Conan continued. "On the day of the murder, you visited Yamakabe's home to discuss publishing an autobiography. You forced him to open his safe by threatening him. You waited for the sleeping pills you slipped him to take effect before creating your two weapons. Using a clay that softens when heated and hardens when cooled, you created a mold. To give it some weight, you added a steel rod and used UV resin to create the weapon you'd actually use. Meanwhile, you attached Yamakabe's blood and hair to the ornament so it would seem as though it was the weapon used to kill him. Then you ransacked the room and carried the sleeping Yamakabe out of the house. After that, you visited Chikaba Yasukosa-san with Yamakabe still sleeping in your car. Around seven o'clock, you left her house saying you were going to buy cigarettes and killed Yamakabe, who was asleep in your car using the actual weapon. After leaving Chikaba's house, you dumped Yamakabe's body and disposed of the actual weapon. Then you anonymously called the emergency number. By making sure the police discover Yamakabe-san's body as soon as possible, you prompted them to determine his time of death and visit Yamakabe's home, convincing them it was impossible for you to have killed him. The next morning, you pretended to get into an accident and destroyed your car to erase any sign that your vehicle was the actual scene of the murder."

"Everything you said is correct, Mouri-san." Temukai confessed.
