Chapter 196: The Spiral of Rain and Malice

Time passes...

"What is this?" Ayumi blinked, the Detective Boys finding an abandoned car on the Shikigawa Riverbank they were playing soccer on.

"The license plate has been removed." Mitsuhiko noted, reclaiming the mislaid ball. "Perhaps it was dumped illegally. How thoughtless."

"Let's get back to the game." Conan urged. "Didn't the weather report say it'd rain this evening? What's wrong?" he turned to the distracted Haibara after the game resumed. "Is that a voice recorder?" he spotted the keychain recorder Onda Tamaki was talking into.

"Watch out!" Haibara warned, Mitsuhiko redirected Genta's ball into Onda's direction.

"You should be more careful." Onda chided, the waylaid ball falling into her outstretched hand.

"That doesn't sound good." Genta muttered, hearing thunder crack in the distance.

"Look at the time." Onda took a look at her wristwatch. "They're late. I'm going to have to stick around a little longer. You kids should go on home."

The next morning...

After hearing the news bulletin about Onda's dead body being found in the abandoned car by Shikigawa River, Conan hurried over to the crime scene. "You guys came?" he noticed the others were also at the scene.

"You knew the deceased Onda Tamaki-san?" Takagi overheard the kids' conversation.

"She played soccer with us here yesterday." Genta nodded.

"What time was it?" Takagi inquired.

"For about an hour just around three." Mitsuhiko recalled.

"What's the estimate time of death?" Conan asked.

"We're still waiting for Mizuno-san's autopsy report, but her initial examination puts it between midnight and 2am last night." Takagi replied.

"Is the cause of death still unknown?" Haibara pressed.

"Mizuno-san found one contusion on her head and several on her body." Takagi nodded. "But since she's been exposed to water, it'll take some time to determine the fatal wound."

"What about personal possessions?" Conan inquired.

"Her valuables like her phone and wallet were still on her person." Takagi answered. "Do you recognize this?" he showed the kids the photo of a dangling earring on his tablet. "The deceased Onda Tamaki-san was holding it in her hand. "Was she wearing this yesterday?"

"No." Haibara replied. "At least, she wasn't wearing any earring."

"Those were the only possessions found on her?" Conan was puzzled. "There wasn't a voice recorder?"

"This type of recorder." Haibara showed Takagi the photo she took of the keychain recorder.

"We didn't find one." Takagi confirmed. "Maybe she dropped it somewhere."

"We haven't found any witnesses." Chiba came forward.

"To be safe, wouldn't it be best to investigate this as both a murder and accident?" Conan suggested.

After Takagi and Chiba spilt off, Conan spotted a Cheetah Delivery truck parked nearby.

Spotting Conan's look, Koyabu Ryuji drove off.

"This is it." Haibara showed Conan the license plate she photographed.

At the Cheetah Delivery building...

"Detective Takagi." Genta blinked, Takagi and Chiba breaking up the pending fight between Koyabuu and his supervisor.

At the police station...

"You found a match for the fingerprints?" Conan echoed.

"The fingerprints on the deceased Onda-san's glasses matched the fingerprints that were collected a year ago." Takagi confirmed. "During the estimated time of death between midnight and 2am, he was making deliveries. There's even testimony verifying that. Hello?" he took the incoming call.

"Chiba here." Chiba sounded from the other end. "I checked out the late Onda-san's company and made an unbelievable discovery. You're Shirosaki Yurina-san, right?" he interrupted Shirosaki at work. "This belongs to you, doesn't it?" he showed Shirosaki the earring bagged as evidence. "We're stumped." he sighed after the questioning. "They both have alibis."

"Then, we should re-examine the case." Conan suggested.

Returning to the Shikigawa Riverbank...

The Detective Boys found Kawai Kinu walking her poodle, the other earring was tucked into said dog's collar.

After the aged woman confirmed she did not find the voice recorder, Conan started piecing everything together.

That evening...

"Takagi, Chiba, is it true that Mouri-kun discovered a lead in this case?" Megure asked.

"First, look at this." Chiba showed his superior his tablet. "This is dash cam footage from the two cars that caused a minor collision last night. Right here." he paused the footage and enlarged the image, showing Koyabuu in his delivery truck with an unconscious Onda in the passenger seat. "This is the footage from the other dash cam ten minutes later." he added, forwarding the video.

"Is he driving back and forth?" Megure blinked, the delivery truck was shown on the other side of the road.

"Koyabuu-san, would you explain that yourself?" Takagi inquired.

"If it hadn't been raining so hard, I could've avoided her." Koyabuu confessed. "I thought I'd run her over, but then..." he recalled Onda getting back to her feet and enter his truck, requesting him to take her to hospital. After a while, Onda asked him to turn back so she could look for an important item she dropped. Exiting the truck after returning to the riverbank, Onda slid onto the pavement and Koyabuu drove off, certain that Onda would be alright.

"And you, Shirosaki Yurina-san." Chiba started. "Didn't you meet Onda Tamaki-san here yesterday?"

"We found the other earring." Takagi revealed. "Your fingerprints have been found on them."

"She rejected my presentation." Shirosaki admitted. "She was jealous of my talent. So, she stole my designs and tried to pass them off as her own." she revealed after getting into a squabble, she snatched back her tablet and hit Onda on the side of her head with it. Returning to the site a while later, she found Onda was gone.

"Onda-san probably decided she needed to go to the hospital based on the pain and blood loss." Takagi concluded. "She unsteadily made her way to the road when she encountered Koyabuu-san's vehicle.

"If she hadn't said such awful things in the first place..." Shirosaki muttered.

"I think you're wrong." Conan refuted.

"She was talking about herself." Genta recalled.

"Detective Takagi, were you able to find Tamaki-san's voice recorder?" Conan asked.

"Not yet." Takagi answered.

"One of your earrings was found in Tamaki-san's hand." Haibara supplied.

"So, maybe Tamaki-san's voice recorder is in your bag." Conan suggested.

"Impressive work, Conan-kun." Takagi breathed, seeing Shirosaki dig out the keychain. He pressed the play button and everyone heard Onda's final words.

"Then, what about when I saw her?" Koyabuu pressed.

"She was probably disoriented and didn't know who you are." Takagi explained. "She entered the abandoned car to get out of the rain. And then, she lost consciousness."

Later that night...

"It's a pity, really." Ami admitted, biting into her slice of seafood pizza.

"You mean the Onda case?" Amuro brought in two shot glasses and a bottle of plum wine.

"Yes." Ami nodded. "I finally determined her cause of death: the injuries she sustained from the tablet and car were too much and she died from too much blood loss because she was left untreated for a prolonged amount of time. If she'd suffered only one of both injuries, it wouldn't be as fatal."
