Chapter 203: The Inauspicious Matchmaking, Part One

Time passes...

"Come to think of it, they're coming from Osaka today." Mouri recalled.

"That must be them." Ran heard the door knock.

"I'm here, Ran-chan." Kazuha opened the door. "If you're looking for Heiji, he's not here." she informed Conan. "Wanna go to the Haido Shrine with us?" she offered.

At Haido Shrine...

After the girls purchased their matchmaking charms, the group heard a horrified scream.

"That scream..." the masked Hattori realized.

"It might've come from the rear stairs." Conan noted and the two detectives rushed off.

At the bottom of the rear staircase...

"It's no use." Hattori gave the dead Hidaka Soushi a glance-over. "He's dead."

"Maybe he slipped down the steps." Kazuha suggested. "There's a lot of snow."

"If that were the case, he would've used his elbow or hand to break his fall and protect his body." Hattori refuted. "There is no sign of that. Which means after knocking him out, someone pushed him down the stairs. It was murder. Judging by this bloody flag abandoned on the steps, the culprit probably struck the victim with this flag at the top of the steps, pushed him down and killed him. Since a flag would attract attention, he removed just the pole and fled."

"He's not an exam student." Conan added. "Look at these flashcards he had." he showed the girls the stack of cards he found inside the body's coat.

"They're all photos of people." Ran gasped.

"He was probably memorizing the faces of wanted criminals, looking for them in the city, and questioning and arresting them if he found any." Conan suggested. "He was a police investigator. So, I need you to call Detective Takagi and tell him not to let anyone out of this shrine. Tell him those three bad guys might still be in the shrine."

After Sato and Takagi arrived to the scene...

"After receiving your call and investigating the shrine grounds, we found that all three of them were still here." Takagi remarked. "That's them." he turned to the three suspects. "Pickpocket and shoplifter, Shamoto Tsurumi, Kawano Torahiko, who drove without a license and committed a hit-and-run, marriage fraudster, Jinnai Kyouma."

"And one of you may have added murder to their list of crimes." Sato added.

"The victim was MPD Investigation Assistance Police Lieutenant, Hidaka Soushi, 31 years old." Ami recited to one of her forensics officers who was taking notes on her behalf. "Given the contusion on back of his head and no evidence that he attempted to break his fall, I believe he died after being knocked out by someone at the top of the staircase, fell down the steps and struck his head. I can't give a conclusive verdict until I examine the contusion more thoroughly. Though, judging by the bloody flag abandoned on the steps, the culprit most probably struck the victim on the head using the flag, knocking him out and then killed him by pushing him down the staircase. And since the flag would attract unwanted attention, they most likely removed the pole from the flag and fled with it."

"Officers are currently searching the shrine grounds but they've found nothing yet." Takagi related.

"According to testimony from Ran-chan and her friends, the victim Lieutenant Hidaka was in line to purchase a matchmaking charm." Sato continued, Ami having led her team off. "He said 'This really is a matchmaking shrine. That's three of them in one place.' and then left the line to chase after someone."

"That's definitely what he said." Kazuha confirmed.

"His job was to memorize the faces of criminals and find and arrest them." Sato declared. "If he said 'three of them', then that means there were three wanted criminals. Which means it's safe to assume one of you three wanted criminals here at Haido Shrine killed Lieutenant Hidaka." she turned to the three suspects.
