Chapter 206: The Culprit Who Disappeared Into the Sleeping Town

Sometime later...

"Ouch..." Mouri winced, nursing his injured nose. "Look at the time."

"I'm glad we found the lost cat, though." Ran pointed out.

"Stop, murderer!" a shout hollered out, after the trio heard a whistle.

"It came from over there." Conan ran forward.

The trio arrived to see a stabbed Goro Nezu lying at the bottom of a staircase.

"He's still alive." Mouri realized. "Ran, call an ambulance."

"Hideto?" Yuki Keiko's scream was heard nearby. "Don't die."

"Ran-nee-chan, there's someone at the top of the stairs, too." Conan spoke.

"Who did this to you?" Mouri asked Goro and the security guard pointed to the trail of bloodied footsteps leading away from the crime scene. "White clothes..." he muttered and passed out.

"What's going on?" Ichinose Kaoru appeared from the pathway.

After Mouri's team was called in...

"The man dead at the top of the stairs is Yuki Hideto-san, 34 years old." Takagi reported. "He was stabbed in the chest."

"Yuki Hideto?" Mouri echoed. "As in the Yuki Hideto?"

"He was the gifted president of an IT company." Takagi confirmed. "He was frequently criticized by the media for his aggressive business practices. He had a lot of enemies."

"So, that's his company's building." Megure turned. "It's right next to the murder scene."

"We believe he was attacked as he was exiting the building." Sato supplied.

"Someone left flowers already?" Megure spotted the bouquet of white lilies by the wall.

"They were already there before the murder." Sato explained. "We don't think it's related to the case."

"Did she discover the body?" Megure turned to the distraught Keiko.

"She's Yuki's wife and the company's number two." Takagi related. "Her name is Yuki Keiko-san."

"She was clinging to her husband's body." Mouri added. "By the time we saw them, they were already like that."

"We'll wait to question her later." Megure decided. "A stun gun?" he noticed the taser on the ground.

"Yuki carried one for self-defense." Takagi stated.

"Judging by the voltage, there must be a stun gun burn on the culprit's body." Sato remarked.

"Security guard Nezu-san arrived at the scene and got into a tussle with the culprit." Mouri surmised.

"These flat ones belong to the culprit, and those patterned ones are Nezu-san's." Conan pointed out.

"Despite his injuries, Nezu-san desperately pursued the culprit." Mouri continued. "But, during his pursuit, he was stabbed in the stomach."

"Based on the shape of their injuries, I believe the same knife is used to stab both men." Ami related.

"There are a lot of cuts concentrated here." Conan noted.

"He must've fought the culprit here." Megure mused.

"The culprit's footprints end at the entrance to the main avenue." Sato stated. "It's possible he changed shoes or fled in a vehicle."

"We're currently searching the area." Takagi reported. "But we found no signs of the culprit fleeing, much less witnesses."

"Maybe they're right here, feigning innocence." Sato suggested.

"I was talking to my husband in a third-floor meeting room until a moment ago." Keiko sobbed. "After that, I stayed behind to work and heard the alarm whistle."

"Did you see the culprit?" Megure asked and Keiko shook her head. "I was in the room at the very back. It's true that people hated my husband. But he was actually a sensitive person."

"But only you are wearing a wedding ring." Conan remarked.

"Perhaps you were unhappy with your husband as well." Megure stated.

"My husband is asking for a divorce." Keiko revealed. "He also said he'd sell the company."

"Then, the prime suspect is..." Takagi turned to Ichinose.

"You think I killed the president?" the secretary was confused. "Why?"

"My husband told you off all the time and I sometimes saw you glaring daggers at him." Keiko stated.

"This is a misunderstanding." Ichinose protested.

"You weren't working today, were you?" Keiko reminded. "What are you doing here?"

"I just happened to pass by." Ichinose beamed.

"You smell like coffee and cigarettes." Conan gave Ichinose's pants a sniff. "You were at the smoking area across the street and you've been there for quite a while."

"You're the only one who was at the avenue Nezu-san pointed at." Mouri declared.

"You must've seen them running down the avenue." Sato added.

"Nezu-san said white clothes." Ran reminded.

"Takagi-kun, get forensics over here." Megure instructed. "No bloodstains, huh?" he mused, after Ichinose was scanned for bloodstains.

"These clothes are reversible." Conan remarked.

"So, it's a black and white reversible vest." Megure noted, Ichinose lifting his shirt halfway up.

"We'll find something this time." Mouri was confident as the shirt's white surface was scanned.

"There's nothing there." Sato blinked.

"It's coffee." Conan deathpanned, giving the stain a whiff.

"My shoes are completely different from the culprit." Ichinose showed the group his shoe sole.

"In the end, they're both innocent." Megure sighed, Takagi and Sato finding no stun gun burn mark on either suspect's bodies.

"But why would the culprit attack Yuki-san in front of a security guard?" Conan was puzzled. "Wasn't the security guard over there?" he pointed to the guard post. "Was Yuki-san really the culprit's only target?"

"I'll look into it immediately." Sato stated. "I found that four years ago, Yuki's company was suspected of unlawful conduct." she reported back. "There was a woman who assumed all responsibility and killed herself by jumping off this building."

"Shirai Sachi." Keiko clarified. "She helped found the company and was my best friend."

"The suspicions ended with her death." Takagi continued. "Foul play was suspected at the time, but a security guard testified that he saw Sachi-san threw herself from the building and the case was determined to be a suicide."

"And the security guard was..." Sato added.

"Nezu-san." Conan guessed.

"After that, Nezu began paying off the debt he'd accumulated." Sato continued.

"If Yuki-san bribed him into giving false testimony..." Mouri trailed.

"Nezu-san was the target from the start?" Ran gaped.

"Not only that, Sachi-san died four years ago, from today." Takagi recounted.

"Were these murders revenge against the two men in Sachi-san's death?" Megure wondered.

"Ran-nee-chan." Conan showed Ran a picture he found. "An image I found on SNS."

"Is that Sachi-san?" Ran blinked.

"It's still online." Conan added.

"Mizuno?" Megure took the incoming call from the coroner. "The knife injuries on Nezu's side are self-inflicted?"

It was also then Conan found blood spray on the building's window panel and a pair of bloodied footprints in front of the glass. Turning towards the chalk outline of Hideto's body, he finally pieced together what actually happened.

"It's true that I was Sachi's boyfriend." Ichinose admitted to Megure, Conan having found his reflection in the wine glass in the picture.

"Then, you joined the company..." Keiko blinked.

"To determine the truth." Ichinose insisted. "But I didn't kill anyone."

"Why did you bring that pen?" Conan pointed to the pen clipped to Ichinose's breast pocket. "It's a recording device."

"The president asked me to come here tonight." Ichinose answered. "He said he had something to tell me about Sachi. I think he figured it out, so I brought this. We were supposed to wait at the smoking area, but he never showed up, so I headed towards the office building. But there were already bloody footprints there." he recalled seeing Nezu performing CPR on Hideto. "There wasn't time to clear up the misunderstanding." he added, remembering he had fled the scene and I was focused on running, so I don't know if someone stabbed Nezu-san behind me. By the time I turned around, he was already on the ground."

"My husband probably wanted to tell you he planned to turn himself in." Keiko guessed. "My husband told me everything for the first time about the unlawful activity, about Sachi and about turning himself in."

At that point, Conan tranquilized Mouri and began his reasoning. "There is one more person; someone with the motive to kill Yuki-san for trying to turn himself in who's never run or hidden from us right from the start. Didn't Mizuno-san say Nezu-san's injuries were self-inflicted? In other words, the true culprit is Nezu-san, the dead security guard."

"It's true that Nezu-san's false testimony would be exposed if Yuki turned himself in." Takagi remarked.

"He'd be fired from his job." Sato added. "At his age, with a criminal record, he'd never find another job. That sounds like a good motive to me."

"Wasn't he killed?" Megure blinked.

"Nobody saw who killed him." Conan pointed out. "Neither Keiko-san nor Ichinose-san who was only a short distance away. It doesn't make sense; he fought with the culprit who was armed with a knife, but Nezu-san's nightstick was still on his hip."

"But there were two sets of footprints." Takagi noted.

"Even if he used a second pair to make them, where did the shoes go?" Sato was confused.

"The bottoms of Nezu-san's shoes had two surfaces." Conan revealed. "What we saw was the rubber sole mask he attached to his shoes. If you remove them, their unsettling flat face is revealed. Nezu-san's plan was probably this: first, he'd stab Yuki-san to death when he exited the building. Next, he'd use his flat soles to create footprints left by the mysterious X, leading to the main avenue. Then, he'd glue the soles he brought to his shoes and climb up the stairs, step in the blood and this time create his own footprints. Next, he'd cut the front of his body using a knife to imitate defensive wounds. Finally, he'd perform chest compressions on Yuki-san to hide the blood that had gotten on him. He'd blow his alarm whistle so Keiko-san would witness what happened. The non-existent X would be frame and he'd be a heroic victim who suffered injuries. But, nothing ever goes according to plan. When he stabbed Yuki-san he was met by unexpected resistance. Realizing that it would be clear that he was the one who killed Yuki-san, so Nezu-san's mind raced as he created the fake footprints. Realizing the best way to hide a burn was with another injury; it is as Mizuno-san discovered, the self-inflicted wounds were to hide the stun gun burn. Once he was done, while performing chest compressions to hide the evidence, Ichinose-san showed up. Thinking that he saw everything, he went after Ichinose-san on the pretense that he was the culprit. But, Nezu-san had cuts all over his side and the soles of his shoes felt different from before. When he raced down the stairs at full speed..."

"In other words, it was an accident." Sato concluded, realizing Nezu had tripped over his feet, fell down the staircase and inevitably stabbed himself.

"That's just conjecture." Megure reminded. "That's not enough."

"There is evidence." Conan corrected. "How did Nezu-san hide the stun gun burn? It would be difficult to see a burn on his side, so he needed a mirror. Right here." he ran out from his hiding place behind the pillar and pointed to the blood spray he found on the glass panel. "There's blood and footprints on the ground, too."

"Get forensics over here." Megure ordered.

Less than a week later...

"Unbelievable!" Usagi fumed, seeing Unazuki's Tumblr post about her getting married. "I will never allow her to be happy. Don't think she's going to get married without a hitch. I will do everything in my power to disrupt her wedding. So, that man is Unazuki's fiancé." she chuckled, following Unazuki to the crepe dessert shop she was having a date in. "He's quite good-looking and perfect for me. I will steal Unazuki's happiness."

Come Saturday...

"I heard that Yutaka has a girlfriend now." Unazuki was scrolling through her Facebook account as she walked by the road with Nobuo, her fiancé.

"Hello, Unazuki-chan." Usagi sang.

"Usagi, what are you doing here?" Unazuki blinked.

"I'm meeting up with someone you know." Usagi winked. "I'm meeting with someone you know very well. That person seemed to have something else to do, but because he wanted to see me, he said he canceled last minute. Even a stupid person like you know what this means. If you think you can be happy, you are mistaken. It will teach you to face reality, because he will be coming soon. Over here, darling!" she waved to the newcomer. "I stole your fiancé." she giggled. "Because I'm way prettier than you. It's only natural that I should be happier than you."

"Usagi, I'm embarrassed if you get so close in public like that." Yutaka flushed. "I mean what?" he exclaimed. "Sister-in-law? Let me explain, this is my girlfriend, Usagi. Usagi, this is Unazuki, my brother's fiancé."

"Usagi is an old friend of mine." Unazuki sighed.

"What is this?" Usagi demanded. "What's happening? Because Unazuki, after I left the dessert shop the other day, you met with this guy. I even hid behind a tree to see him. You!" she glared at Yutaka. "You told me that you canceled an important matter last minute."

"I have a part-time job today." Yutaka replied. "But since you said you wanted to meet, I skipped work."

"Are you a scumbag?" Usagi snarled.

"What is this situation?" Nobuo sweatdropped. "Yutaka, you skipped your part-time job again, didn't you?"

"But Usagi wanted to have dinner with me and I couldn't refuse." Yutaka explained. "My feelings for Usagi will never change." he grasped Usagi's hands. "To me, Usagi is my destiny. It's more important than some part-time job, more important than anything else."

"Don't touch me!" Usagi snapped. "You've got to be kidding me. I'm not interested in you at all. All I want is to make all my friends unhappy. But you're not Unazuki's fiancé. There's absolutely no way such an irresponsible person like you could be a match with a beauty like me. Your real fiancé is hot, responsible and has a high-paying job. He's perfect for me. How could you do this when I'm much prettier than you?"

"You know what?" Nobuo sighed. "You keep saying that you're prettier, but no matter how I look at it, Unazuki is prettier than you."

"There's no way!" Usagi screamed. "That's a total lie! This is unbelievable!" still in denial, she ran off, sobbing.
