Chapter 9: A Father's covering
Authors note: just wanted to thank everyone fro their follows and favorites! Glad you all are liking the story!
Charlie Swan was never one for a big display of emotions. He never cried in front of his daughter. He smiled when he genuinely felt happy, and serious when he needed to be. Some people even called him emotionally stoic. He sometimes had the same reaction to everything. However, there were very few times, when Charlie Swan was red-faced, vein popping mad. The first time had been when his daughter, ran away to rescue her dead ex-boyfriend. He thought his head was going to explode. Just for her show up a few days later saying Edward had needed her. Charlie's best friend had died just a few days before, hadn't Charlie needed her? but he had let that go grateful his daughter was home. The second time he had been angry was when his daughter came running to him about her abusive husband and the horrors he had put her through. But once again, he let it go.
This time, though he sees his daughter looking around in fear and confusion. He also notices the stress in her eyes and the slight weight gain in her abdomen. He also didn't expect Quil Junior to be holding her back protectively. He didn't know how to feel about that but he did notice the changes in Quil. The kid had long hair and his eyes were also yellow...
Charlie's eyes widened. He had come here to surprise her, not to see his best friend being restrained by his wife and brother.
With anger boiling through his veins, Charlie holstered his gun and strode toward his best friend with purpose.
While he was still on the ground, Charlie made sure to deck Quil right in the face.
The latter yelped and grabbed his nose as blood poured from it.
"ajana, Chester let him up," Charlie ordered.
Chester flew back and phased mid-air while ajana transformed from four legs into two.
Bella made way to come to him but Charlie stopped her with a hand.
"you stay right there baby girl. Quil take the girls inside."
As soon as they were out of sight, Charlie pulled back his fist and punched his friend. With lightning-like reflexes, he made sure to punch his brother in the gut.
The latter grunted but stayed standing.
" what the heck Charlie!" Chester groaned.
Charlie unleashed his pent-up rage at his brother and best friend.
" I sent my daughter Here to be protected! Not bombarded by the supernatural! I came here to check on her and to update you guys! And instead of finding her at peace, I find her fearful all because of YOU!" He pointed at Quil.
I watched you run out here like a madman! Did it ever occur to you that my daughter has been traumatized? And coming at her yelling and screaming wouldn't be the best thing for her right now! No, I bet you didn't! You were so enraged by whatever the heck made you mad and you were blinded by your emotions! I thought you had better self-control than this!"
Charlie then turned to Chester. " and you! You are supposed to be protecting her! Not allowing Quill to blow off the handle! Just what is going on here?"
Chester and Big Quil looked at each other in shame. Both men sighed, as Big Quil slowly stood up, his hands in the air.
"I'm in control Charlie I promise." Big Quil assured him.
Chester rubbed the back of his neck. It seemed to be a habit for the swan family.
"Man bro, it's been a long time since we've seen each other. You look good. Like the stache. I'm sorry old man, I've been dropping the ball. I should have been calling you more. I should have Bella call you more. We've just been adjusting."
"and I shouldn't have approached her like that. I was just very angry at who Bella's ex-husband was. I would never hurt my goddaughter. You that. But a vampire? really Charlie? The very thought of him near her, makes me want to phase. And I banished the wolf a long time ago. You knew our tribe legends how could this have happened?"
Charlie scoffed as he sat down on the ground.
"those were just legends to me Q, how was I supposed to know they were real? And when I finally found out that they were indeed real, my daughter was already broken. I sat there and let this demon break my baby girl. My little girl. I was supposed to fight for her Q. I was supposed to protect her. and yet I let her walk down the aisle. I doomed her. isn't bad enough I failed at being in her life when she was growing up. Why didn't I fight for her? fight harder for her? when Renee took her from me, why didn't I go after her?"
Quil and Chester sat next to him, both of them shaking their head.
" Charlie man, you can't beat yourself up over the past. So yeah you could have been a better father. yeah, I agree with you, I could have been a better father too. We both dropped the ball on that. But man, Bella adores you. She almost took my head off when she found out I was alive. "
"Not to mention" Chester began " you had to take care our your mother and our father. they were dying Charlie. you couldn't leave them. And the court systems were different in the 80's, no judge would have given you custody. Renee was coldhearted and she would have done anything to keep Bella from you. By the time you could have changed anything, Bella was 18. She made up her mind to marry that demon trash and if you had fought her, then you could or would have lost her forever. Besides, weren't you the one who told me the minute she needed you, she called you. you, Charlie. not Renee, or anybody else. She called you. and even right now, she needs you. she has a lot of adjusting to do. And it would help if you were here. As her father."
Before Charlie could respond, the sound of Bella's voice reached his ears.
"char.. dad?"
Charlie turned to see his daughter. She had tears in her eyes and her face was red.
"Bella? What is it, honey?" he asked as he stood up.
It was then Charlie's heart broke at his daughter's next words.
"Daddy, I am so sorry. I am so sorry for hurting you"
Charlie's tears formed in his eyes as he rushed over to her.
With gentle hands, he wrapped his arms around his daughter. A rare display of emotion and affection on his face.
Neither one of them had been into the whole hugging thing, but parts of him were regretting not hugging her enough.
Maybe if he had shown her more affection, she would have been a bit more confident not to let Edwin, treat her like crap.
" I was selfish! And I pushed you away and I wasn't there when you needed me." she sobbed.
Charlie shook his head.
" no, baby girl, I am the one who should be apologizing. I wasn't there for you when you needed me. I allowed some things to come between us."
"so did I," she admitted.
Charlie pulled her back into a tight hug.
For some reason, his daughter just cried harder.
"I could have lost this. Lost you. Dad, I was going to become a vampire. I was going to throw away my whole life and lose this. I was going to lose you."
Charlie sighed, as she told him the truth.
He could have truly lost her.
"you won't ever lose me, baby girl. Not if I can help it."
The father and daughter ended their hug, to look a each other.
"Can I get on the hugs too?"
Both turned to see Big Quil looking sorrowful and apologetic.
"yeah, come on over here Big Q." Bella smiled.
Big Quil bent down to hug his goddaughter, whispering in her ear.
"I apologize for scaring you bella bee. I was just so angry, that my wolf reawakened. It was the thought of you being hurt that scared me the most. But I would never hurt you."
Bella hugged him back relishing in his comforting scent.
"I know you wouldn't. but you all have some explaining to do." She told the three men as she let go of Big Quil. " like why your wife and uncle Chester shapeshifted."
"Well, I think you have some explaining to do as well bells." Her father said with a no-nonsense tone.
"yeah, well I might as tell you all, so we can just get it all out. Dad, Big Quil you guys are going to be grandfathers. To twins. And to add the icing to the cake, Quils the father. "
