Disclaimer:All Wings of Fire property belong to Tui T. Sutherland, I only own my OCs.

Special notes: Most of this will be in first person, with the occasional POV change, which will be indicated.

Author's Notes: This will be my first story I've ever published, which is exciting but also nerve-racking. I do in-fact aim to take writing professionally in the near future in college, so theres that.

but in the mean time I'll be working on this silly little project, and I do hope you end up enjoying the story and character that I've written. I already have the next 2-9 chapters, the longest one being 10k plus words. I'll be posting them in a bi-weekly manner(most likely)

last thing, since this will be my first Story/fanfic I've ever written. There's bound to be flaws I make while writing this so please do not hesitate to criticize my work and point out any flaws, I only ask you do so politely.

Cheers

'The hell?'

Everything felt sluggish, groaning. I rubbed my forehead as I began to slowly recover from.

Death?

Is this the afterlife? Or was everything a false alarm? Last thing I remember was me downing alcohol, and consequently passing out.

I mean, the whole world was coming to the end, a gamma ray burst was the culprit, everything was falling to shit to say the least.

In the matter of the 1 minute that the news of the world coming to end soon was released, everyone quickly went 'savage'. People started slaughtering, assaulting, stealing, and generally doing whatever they pleased. Like who's gonna care about the consequences? We're all gonna die in less than a day, so why bother?

I can vividly remember where I was and what I was doing when it was announced, just finished my shift at my local gas station and soon enough a blaring message appears on my phone, it read.

-Global Crisis Alert-

-a Gamma Ray Burst has been detected-

-it will hit earth in an estimated 18-24 hours-

-All life will be extinguished, survival is not possible-

-May God have mercy on our souls-

Seeing a message like that sent shivers throughout my whole body, but I seriously couldn't believe it, for all I knew it could've been some random bozo in his parents basement that could've somehow hacked into the alert systems and sent that message as an awesome YouTube Prank. Which would have indeed been awesome, if that was actually the case.

While I was investigating the legitimacy of the message, countless people started screaming, running, attacking others. I didn't even notice it until after I confirmed the message.

I saw and heard the president's message, essentially telling me that what I saw and read in my phone was indeed real.

"I'm gonna die"

Wasn't talking to anyone in particular, just myself. So when I came to the sudden realization.

I kinda just.

Accepted it.

Then proceeded to walk home in silence, well that's not true, glass breaking, screaming, shouting, was heard. I ignored my phone that was buzzing non stop, no doubt from my friends as I walked back to my humble cabin. I zoned it out, somehow.

Not like I wanted to perish or anything of the sort, I was perfectly content with what I had. (Partly)Loving father who unfortunately passed months prior, honestly I'd say "fortunately passed", wouldn't want him to see the world end. My mother died when she conceived me but my father always told me stories about her. I generally lived a decent life in my opinion with friends and what few family I had.

But after finding out that you're gonna die in possibly less than a day with absolutely nothing you can do about it, kinda just made me face the harsh reality head on and I didn't want to go out fighting, screaming, or doing any other horrendous acts.

So I decided to go out on my own terms, just being drunk as hell as the world burnt to a crisp.

And so I did that, drank as much as a can from my father's old stash and soon enough I passed out.

And here I am?

Still had trouble deciding if I was actually in the afterlife, didn't feeling anything burning, so not in hell.

Didn't hear any singing or trumpets, so not heaven.

I did hear a few leaves rustle in the wind, but how?

Surely the world should've died, leaves wouldn't exist, they would've burnt into ash. But I hear em?

I eventually finished rubbing my forehead, and opened my eyes slightly, I felt heavy.

Using my finger, I decided to clean any eye boogers that possibly grew.

'Ouch'

I poked myself in the eye with my nails? I always had my nails cut. Whatever, I simply rubbed my eyes instead.

I stood up with my eyes closed, I yawned and stretched.

Felt good, hearing the popping of my bones and the satisfying feeling that accompanied it.

Yawning, felt like yawning.

I finally opened my eyes.

'Huh'

First thing I noticed is where I was located.

'How did I get up here!?'

I was currently atop of a large leaf, I think? That somehow supported my weight. Accompanied by a large tree.

I looked up and saw a clear blue sky.

'The world looks fine, so the whole thing was a mistake?'

Looking back down, I saw how high I truly was.

'Is this tree as big as Everest!? How on earth am I standing on this leaf!?'

Countless panicked thoughts ran through my mind, until it hit me.

Looking at my 'hands'.

Plot twist, they weren't my hands.

They were claws.

Long and pointy talons replaced my human fingers, 4 talons, and a thumb like talon appendage.

'What the fuck'

It soon came to me, I was hallucinating, I think?

I mean of course, it's the only other rational answer as to why the fuck I'm a lizard on a comically large leaf with a colossal tree hundreds of feet into the air.

I flexed my new talons, inspecting them. I touched my face and felt a snout.

'This feels too real, how much did I seriously have to drink?'

Lucid dreaming? Perhaps. It would be a first for me, I don't remember the last time I had one. But now since I am aware I intend to make the most of it. Hopefully when I wake up, the world would not be a burning magma planet.

I looked at my chest.

'Woah'

It was bright pink, and as you guessed it, covered in scales like a lizard. I looked behind me and unsurprisingly noticed hind legs and a long tail, each limb accompanied by a variations of colors.

Honestly, it was pretty cool, a nice change of pace.

Then I saw my wings.

Immediately my eyes widened at the discovery.

'I'm a dragon!'

Won't lie, it was pretty cool living my childhood fantasy.

I looked back down again, over the edge of the leaf platform. I saw the ground and on the way down countless branches, other large leaves, vegetation, and dirt unsurprisingly.

The idea came to me.

'Can I fly? Well it's not like I'll die if I jump off, I'd wake up. And if I want to fly, I'd simply have to imagine it.'

A child-like excitement soon surged through my body, I was gonna fly!

Another dragon! I looked to my right and saw a dragon dangling from a tree branch with their tail.

'I don't think I had a dream this immersive before, this is awesome!'

Most dreams were like being in the passenger's seat of your own car. You had no control over where you were going, but it was fun as hell.

This dream felt a bit 'too' in control. Nothing overly ambitious was happening, like seeing random characters from my favorite TV shows pop up doing something out of the ordinary.

The setting was nice and calm and I was a fucking dragon, what more can a man ask for in life?

I once again leaned over the edge, getting ready to fall off it, fully expecting to lift off half way and begin exploring the world like Aladdin.

And so I did just that, however.

The only thing I managed to do successfully was fall off, the rest never came true.

I only realized this when I was just less than a second from hitting the ground.

'Why aren't I-'

*BONK*
