Another fanfic :)
I've never really been into zombies as a concept but I read a couple Rick and Michonne The Walking Dead fanfics and suddenly I'm feeling very intrigued.
To be upfront this most likely won't be a very action packed fic, there will be action in the early section but (hopefully) in the later chapters it will settle into a sort of uneasy domestic bliss.
Anyway I hope you'll enjoy :)

Chapter 1: The Calm
She was in hell.
Okay that was somewhat dramatic but this wasn't exactly heaven. She sat in the back of her parent's car surrounded by the luggage that they couldn't stuff in the trunk, while her parents sang show tunes off key she had to fight down her breakfast that rose up her throat to make room for the butterflies in her stomach.
Since she was twelve they had decided that, to strengthen their marriage, they would go on a holiday seperate to their family vacations to Vermont or the hamptons while Jazmine would be stuck with a babysitter so when they would be swimming with dolphins in Barbados or skiing in Switzerland for a month she would be stuck with some brace faced high school junior who would busy themselves on their phones or eating all their food.
But she could deal with that, she could just stay in her room trying on red nail polish (that they would never allow) or stay up all night watching movies and eating popcorn till the sun came out (which they would never allow) but this time it was different.
Was it because they realized a sixteen year old girl wouldn't need a babysitter, especially such a mature one such as herself? No, absolutely not.
This time it was different because she was being shipped off to their neighbor's house because apparently Tom Dubois and their elderly boisterous new neighbor, Robert Freeman, were best friends now. Enough of best friends to make their couple's trip a throuple's trip now leaving Jasmine in the care of his two grandsons.
The two grandsons she would see and avoid at school. She bit her lip, okay to be fair she only really avoided the eldest of the Freeman grandsons. Fourteen year old Riley Freeman was a little brother in all the sense of the word, loud, crass, and both confusingly annoying and charming. He swaggered through the halls of their high school like he owned and apparently a lot of people think the same way as everyone loves him. Of the brothers he was the sun, vibrant, violent, and fiery; everyone seemed to gravitate around him.
Her cheeks heated up as her mind wandered to the second brother, the eldest, Huey Freeman. If Riley was the sun then Huey was the moon, stoic and silent, he repelled instead of attracting and he seemed to enjoy a life of being in the shadows. Jazmine wasn't even sure why she had such a raging crush on him, well him being tall enough to climb and a face carved by really horny angels could have something to do with it but in the six months the Freeman's have been here and she had not spoken a single word to him and she was not willing to risk embarrassment to try.
But now she was going to be forced to be in an enclosed space with him for an entire month.
Good lord she was going to puke.
"Well well we're finally here." her mother cheered unbuckling her seatbelt.
"Finally? It was a five minute drive, we could have just walked." Jazmine commented as she shimmied herself out of the car.
The Freeman's house was pretty nice, it matched up well against the other houses that lined the streets in fact it practically blended in. Two stories Georgian style house painted almost completely white with some dark or earthy detailing here and there.
"Honey I don't think you would be saying that if you had to carry all that luggage for fifteen minutes." Tom continued. "I don't even know why you need so much luggage anyway. It's only six weeks."
"Yeah three outfits for each day of six weeks. I held back in all honesty." she had to look her best, wearing sweatpants around Huey would probably cause her to implode from the embarrassment.
Her dad opened his mouth to say something, most likely about her perceived materialism, but was interrupted by a shout.
"Tom!" the Dubois' turned their head to see old Mr. Freeman standing on his porch, arms outstretched above his head.
"Robert!" Tom Dubois mimicked the broad outstretched stance of his friend. The two men laughed before rushing to hug each other.
Sarah Dubois looked back at her daughter and pouted looking less like a forty year old woman and more like a cherub. "These next few weeks are gonna be a total boy's trip."
"No one told you to invite him." Jazmine stated.
Sarah's big blue eyes analyzed her daughter for a second before finally saying. "I for the love of me cannot figure out who that attitude comes from."
Jazmine in turn shrugged. "I don't know either."
The two men were finally done with their hugs and greeting and separated from each other.
"You got your luggage ready?" Tom asked.
"You're damn right, packed everything up since last week you know I wouldn't miss this trip for the world." he laughed before shouting an ear splitting- "Boys! Bring my bags out here!"
Summoned by the shouts of an old man the Freeman brothers appeared in the doorway each holding large coffee colored suitcases in each hand. Their faces screamed that they would rather be doing anything else anywhere else.
Jazmine in turn felt her heart race as soon as she caught a glimpse of Huey. He was in much more relaxed clothing than his usual t-shirt, hoodie, and cargo pants instead wearing a black wife beater and black basketball shorts, even his mane of an afro was subdued being pulled back in a ponytail which accentuated the feline and severe lines of his face. His eyes met hers and she quickly looked down at her open toed white sandals.
"Damn grandad why you need so much shit." Riley grumbled dropping the suitcases on the ground without any care.
"Lil boy if you break 'em you buy 'em!" Mr. Freeman announced yanking on the ends of Riley's cornrows causing the fourteen year old to give a shout of pain.
Jazmine just watched awkwardly as an elderly man successfully bullied the crap out of a lanky 6 foot plus teen boy. She sighed in relief when it was over.
Their goodbye wasn't tearful, at least on the women's parts Tom had to blink away his tears even though everyone already noticed, they piled in Mrm Freeman's luggage into the trunk and they were in their car and gone in less than five minutes and she was stuck here.
Riley definitely did not seem cut up at his grandfather leaving, not even turning his head he announced he was having friends over and disappeared into the house.
Huey didn't pay his brother any mind instead sadly focusing on her.
"C'mon I'll show you your room." Huey's voice sounded over her right shoulder, she could even feel some of his heat radiating off him behind her. She shivered but picked up two of her lightest pieces of luggage quickly hurrying away from him.
She heard him pick up the remaining ones but didn't look back although that didn't seem to matter as with only four strides he was in front of her not breaking the slightest sweat at the amount of crap he carried in his hands.
Ok so tall as a tree and stronger than any guy she's ever met. Absolutely no biggie she told herself as she watched the muscles of his broad back and well built arms as he moved.
He led her through the entryway and she didn't even have the time to take nosy little peaks at the house as her shorter legs chased him up the stairs.
He finally came to a halt down the hallway at the final door to the left.
"So this is gonna be your room." he said, opening the door.
It was nice enough. Small, quaint and a bit dated but still nice. The flowery wallpaper was kind of cute and it even had its own bathroom. Her only problem was that there was no way she was going to be able to fit her clothes in that tiny closet even with the drawer space.
"You like it?"
"Oh yeah totally." she smiled up at him. Jesus Christ he was tall and she wasn't even that short, she was 5'5, 5'6 if you counted her heels but he still stood at least a foot taller than her. She understood why Riley needed his height, he was already the star of their school's basketball team but Huey doesn't play basketball in fact he doesn't play any sport. So why did he need all that height for?
He kind of pissed her off now.
Her irritation dissolved into familiar awkwardness mixed with anxiety as she realized that he did not give the slightest inclination that he was leaving.
He was looking no staring at her both intently and boredly.
Did she have something on her face-
"You are very beautiful."
What? "What?" she asked out loud.
"You heard me." He stated matter of factly and she did hear him. Beautiful, not hot, not bad but beautiful, for a sixteen year old boy that was tantamount to calling her Aphrodite but what did that even mean? Was he secretly into her too? Or was he just stating a hard boiled fact? Jazmine Dubois is a gorgeous girl and everybody knew it, especially her.
"Um yeah I did um thank you." she choked out. "You're beautiful too."
Why did she say that?
He looked down at her with a raised eyebrow, his lips pressed into a straight line, oh god why did she say that?!
"Sure," he said before turning around, giving her a good look at his amazing back and walking off.
Well that was just sad.
She robotically closed the door and with all the bravado of a puppy with its tail tucked in between its legs she laid flat on the bed curled up in the fetal position. Why the hell did she say that? 'You're beautiful too'?! Where was all that wit and charm she kept bragging about?! She was an A plus literature student! Why did all the similes and metaphors disappear?!
She half-heartedly knocked her head against the soft comforter repeatedly trying to either knock some sense into her and knock herself unconscious.
Huey Freeman was the true definition of tall, dark and handsome, the YA male love interest of her dreams, she would even watch him in the library brooding over 500 page books about dead revolutionaries and drool and she just embarrassed herself a part of her was glad he walked off.
She suddenly sat up, her light brown cheeks flushed with red. How the hell was she going to face him tomorrow?! She took a deep breath trying to calm herself down.
He probably forgot already she thought
He probably felt embarrassed because he has a crush on me another thought
Dwelling on such a really insignificant thing makes you look like even more of a loser a third thought popped up. That one actually sting quite a bit.
She didn't feel any better but she decided it was no good to wallow on her bed and instead chose to wallow in the shower instead, it was already getting dark out and she was tired out from today and the hours of packing that was yesterday she just wanted to curl up in a balm and sleep. Unpacking the 'nighttime' suitcase she carefully perused the scent options. Rows and columns of different shampoos, scented moisturizers, perfumes, and also candles, all colorful and co-coordinated. The sweet scents would only make her feel even lamer and the fruity or flowery scents were much too romantic instead she settled on smelling like rain, sad, wet, 'loser who forgot her umbrella' rain.
She didn't even bother with her twenty step nighttime skincare routine and she was not willing to touch the mountain of clothes she needed to unpack instead just sitting on the floor, blow drying her soggy strawberry blonde curls like a wet cat.
She pointedly ignored the pink satin and lace negligee that she had packed for some reason. Well that was a lie she had a reason for the slutty pajamas and it started with Huey and ended with Freeman. She instead took the more sensible option in a Strawberry Shortcake baby tee and pink cotton shorts
She shoved the tiny unneeded pillows to the floor and pulled back the plush comforter and cotton sheets and diving into the warm embrace of bed. She felt her eyes get heavy and she was not one to fight it succumbing to her sleep.
Seconds, minutes, or hours later ,she could never be quite sure, she was gently shaken up from her dreamless sleep and his wine colored eyes met her emerald.
She lifted herself upright and groggily rubbed her tired eyes. "Huey? What are you-"
He interrupted her, his eyes wide with an intense emotion. "Jazmine something wrong is going on."
And Jazmine's heart sank.
Chapter one is completed.
Took longer than I wanted but hey it's about the journey not the destination.
