Note: A CHARACTER IS GENDER-SWAPPED IN THIS STORY.
KAGUYA KUWABARA
Now, imagine Kazuma Kuwabara having been born as a girl, but his life as a female resembled the life we already know it to be in the series.
COULD THIS BE A HIEI X KUWABARA ROMANCE STORY?
We think it's a perfect recipe for one.
The story picks up where Yoshihiro Togashi left off at the end of Volume 19 in the manga.
Synopsis:
After the dangerous cult members tried to destroy the world, Team Urameshi tries to moves onto better things... Meanwhile, Kuwabara and Hiei come to a better understanding of each other.

"How can I decide what's right?
When you're clouding up my mind
I can't win your losing fight
All the time
Nor could I ever own what's mine
When you're always taking sides
But you won't take away my pride
No, not this time
Not this time
How did we get here
When I used to know you so well?
How did we get here?
Well, I think I know
The truth is hiding in your eyes
And it's hanging on your tongue
Just boiling in my blood
But you think that I can't see
What kind of man that you are
If you're a man at all
Well, I will figure this one out
On my own
(I'm screaming, I love you so)
On my own
(But my thoughts you can't decode)
How did we get here?
When I used to know you so well?
Yeah, how did we get here?
Well, I think I know
Do you see what we've done?
We're gonna make such fools of ourselves
Do you see what we've done?
We're gonna make such fools of ourselves
Yeah, yeah
How did we get here
When I used to know you so well? Yeah
How did we get here
When I used to know you so well?
I think I know
I think I know
There is something I see in you
It might kill me, I want it to be true..."

Team Urameshi had met up at the late Master Genkai's shrine...
Kaguya had received an invitation to the next Demon Tournament from Urameshi, which she was delighted upon, albeit Kurama had advised against it whilst Hiei had argued that Demon World was no place for a human to be, period. However, Kuwabara was not going to take any advice from the fox and was most certainly not going to pay attention to the fire youkai.
"I am more than happy to be there." She had told the male members of their team. "After all, I have been improving my skills and I am looking forward to using them."
Hiei scowled in opposition. "I've said it before and I'll say it again: Makai is no place for you to be setting foot in. It's too dangerous and I won't be the one to protect you from demons who see you as nothing more than a tasty snack."
"Oh, aren't you cute, Hiei. Showing how much you care about Kuwabara." Yusuke chuckled at the shorter demon's objections.
Both Kaguya and Hiei turned red in the face and refused to look at each other.
Yusuke laughed as he absentmindedly rubbed the back of his right index finger against his septum to cure a sudden itch. "The other girls will be there. I invited Keiko, too, and she agreed to come with us to be our support, same with Yukina and Botan."
"Oh, goody, The Cheering Squad." Hiei said with derision. "Yukina I will accept, but the other two can stay out of Makai, the same goes for Kuwabara. I will not be their babysitter. I refuse."
"When's The Tournament, Urameshi?" Kaguya changed the subject somewhat, fighting to ignore Hiei's rude comments.
"About two years from now, so there's plenty of time to train and plan for the main event." Yusuke responded truthfully. "Say, Kuwabara. The only reason why I invited you is because Hiei seriously needs a girlfriend." He said half-jokingly, grinning impishly. "He told me personally that he missed having you around the last time he attended The Demon Tournament."
Hiei turned a bright cherry red, his eyes widened in embarrassment.
Kaguya blushed brightly, shocked by such a revelation. "Y-you're lying!" She accused her friend. "The Short Stop hates me!"
"Are you sure?" Yusuke laughed.
"Y-yes! Yes, I'm sure!" Kaguya argued back.
"Actually," Kurama spoke up. "I do recall Hiei mentioning Kaguya myself, saying something on the lines of those exact words. Didn't you, Hiei?"
Hiei looked away, purposely avoiding all eye contact as much as possible.
Yusuke began laughing even louder before Kurama began laughing as well, and then Botan joined in on the laughter, too.
"Hey, none of this is funny!" Kuwabara fretted. "Why are you being so lame? You idiots stop making fun of us!"
"They're making fun of you, not me." Hiei retorted. "So, don't lump me in with you, idiot." He warned, pointing at her accusingly as he sent her a dreadful look of disdain.
"Sh-sh-shut up!" Kaguya spat at him, disgusted at his attitude towards her.
The other members laughed even harder.
"Oh, that's REAL MATURE, guys!" Kaguya counterattacked. "SHUT UP! You're making the pipsqueak nervous!"
"Don't deflect this upon me!" Hiei snapped.
"You're the one who has issues, buddy!" Kaguya fired back at him.
"I'm not, nor ever was, your friend!" Hiei barked at her.
"More like FUTURE BOYFRIEND." Botan teased.
Kaguya growled out of frustration. "Tch. You guys can just kiss my sweet a$s for making me the butt monkey of all your sick and cruel jokes!"
"How can anyone help it?" Yusuke jeered. "You make it SO easy, Miss Sensitive! You're so reactionary, anyone can get your goat!"
"Well, I am SO SICK and TIRED of being the team's SCAPEGOAT!" Kaguya roared back in defense.
Hiei looked Kuwabara up and down with his eyes, drinking her in so as to keep in imprint of her in his mind for any sort of reason imaginable, he told himself, but mostly to take mental notes as he made reference of her appearance.
"What size do you guys want your coffins to be?" Kaguya threatened the laughing squad. "Keep this up and I'll throw you all in the ground and bury every last one of you in an unmarked grave!"
"You wish!"
