Hey, guys.
Long time, no see, huh?
So, you're probably wondering where on Earth Red vs Blue VS RED vs BLU is. I have bad news, and good news. But mainly bad news. It's been a few solid years, and, as most of you probably suspect, rvbVSRvB has been canceled. But worse still, I'm also announcing that there will be no Season Finale for Season 2. Why?
Well, there are many reasons. First, I need you to know that this was by no means an easy decision for me. I agonized over it for literal weeks, and even talked about it with friends and family who have no interest in Death Battle or these little stories I write. But ultimately, it came down to one thing: I wanted to keep writing Death Battles, and stop writing Episode 20.
I had around 70% of the research for Episode 20 completed when I announced it. Since the research was, by far, the hardest and most time-consuming aspect of this show, I was confident in my initial projections of having it out by the end of the year. But then I started writing out the episode and was hit, hard, by the scope of what I was trying to do. I didn't want to do what Death Battle does and only stick to one or two feats per character to keep everything timely; in fact, I outright refused to do so. I wanted every single character treated with the same reverence as any regular combatant.
Then I wrote Church's bio. Then Tucker's. Then Scout's. And each one was over 4000 words long. And I didn't feel as though I could cut any of it down without disrespecting the character. I started to feel depressed about the whole ordeal, especially after planning out the outline for the battle itself. A fight where eighteen combatants all had to interact with every other combatant personally in some specific way that was unique to them, and nailing the very-defined and well-known personalities of each and every one of them? I had some great ideas (there was a specific philosophy debate I wanted to write between the Heavy and O'Malley) but the bread and cheese didn't exist. This was an undertaking that could be its own entire fanfiction novel, and I didn't know if I had it in me to either write that or cut it down appropriately.
This caused me to look back on my previous episodes. Episodes like Alphonse VS Nightmare, and Harley Quinn VS Juliet Starling, and the walls of text that made up the bios. And that forced me to ask a question I'd been avoiding for a long time:
"Would I enjoy reading these?"
I stopped writing after that.
I had other things in my life. I finished college. I got a job I really liked. I got back into my old hobbies of cooking, making YouTube videos, and absorbing stories instead of writing them. I always felt bad about leaving things off without so much as a goodbye, but that was what I had always done when I abandoned a story. Sorry, everyone who got into "The Plague." That thing was going nowhere good, trust me.
But I still watched Death Battle religiously. I still loved the show. I watched the rest of Season 6, all of 7, 8, and 9, and by the time 10 came around, I had stirrings again. I wanted to do more than watch; hearing the analysis for each character and seeing them interact with each other (especially once they started bringing more personality into every fight) was something special. Something I wanted to create.
So I brought up some half-baked ideas and scripts for Death Battles I wanted to do, scanned through, and saw the massive list of fan-requested matchups. I said to myself "hey, a lot of these are pretty good" and before I knew it I was making battle outlines and mapping out character feats again.
But, there was one massive roadblock in the way. And when I dared to peek again at rvbVSRvB, I saw exactly what I didn't want to: endless potential that I could not fill. If it were more than just me, if I had a team I trusted, we could make it happen. But I didn't, and I didn't want to make this episode.
So, after weeks of deliberation, I came to my conclusion.
My Death Battle Attempts would continue.
Season 2 would not.
I did consider just making another episode the Season Finale, but, for reasons that will become obvious once Season 3 gets underway, I decided against it. Season 2 will have 9 episodes, ending on Groudon VS Ignosaurus, and Season 3 will have 11 Episodes, getting us back on track at the end. I also resolved to write these much faster, and much better, now that I didn't have quite as much stress to worry about. We'll have to see how that pans out, but, for the first time in a long time, I'm feeling quite positive about it.
So, I know this is not the news some of you wanted to hear. I don't even know if there are any of you left. I'd like especially to apologize to the one Guest who left a review with great deals of excitement for Episode 20. I hope you all will still see what I have in store. Give me one more chance.
Well, then, the end of a Season calls for something, doesn't it? How about another Extravaganza, where I go over extra details of all the episodes in Season 2, hint at what's to come, and answer any and all of your questions, be they personal, general, or about specific problems with specific battles and results? Spoilers: it's happening. On August 31st, we'll see our final wrap-up of Season 2.
And don't worry, I've learned my lesson. This Extravaganza is already fully written and ready to be published; I'm only waiting to give you all a chance to ask some questions for the Q&A!
Well, that's it from me today. Sad news, indeed, but also, hope for the future: I really think Season 3 will be the best I've ever done, and it starts with a particularly fun matchup I've been considering for years.
So, please, leave your questions in the reviews, or my PMs, or wherever you can find me, really. Also, battle suggestions; I'm now completely open again for business!
And thanks. For being here.
Once more, unto the breach.
