Chapter Four: Do you get that? OURS!
Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha!
Arriving at Kagome's mother's house, she saw that Inuyasha and the others were reaching for their handles getting ready to open the doors to step outside.
"Um," Kagome whispered, gaining the other's attention, "do you mind if I go in alone?" She asked looking down at the floorboard of the car before looking up and Inuyasha through her lashes.
Inuyasha didn't say anything, he just gave her a nod before removing his hand from the door handle. She sent him a small smile before taking a deep breath, exiting the car and jogging up to the front. He watched as Kagome reached up to knock on the door before waiting for someone to open it, the door opened, and she stepped inside. He sighed as his phone started to ring, he took the phone out of his pocket, realizing that it was one of his distributers. "Hello?" He said after he pressed the green answering button, then listened for a few seconds.
"Oh, man, today's not a good day, my wife isn't having the best day right now so my day will be spent with her making sure she's okay." Inuyasha told the half-truth to the man on the other end of the phone, the man didn't need to know what was going on - however, Inuyasha didn't want to lie to his employees, so the half-truth would have to do, and if they didn't like it - tough. "Yeah, I get that you're out, however, I can't do anything today - it'll have to be tomorrow." Inuyasha said before pausing again to listen to the man on the other side of the phone. "Alright, sounds good man, see you then - first thing." He said then hung up the phone before dialing a number, he pressed the call button then put it on speaker.
"Cancer ward." The person said when they answered the call.
"Yes, I would like to pay an overdue bill." Inuyasha answered.
"Okay, what's the name of the patient you want to pay for?"
"Hiro Higurashi." Inuyasha answered.
"Okay, one moment while I pull up his file." The woman said as she typed away on her keyboard. "Okay, the balance due is three thousand, five hundred sixteen dollars and thirty-six cents which must be paid in order to start treatments up again, would you like to use the card on file?"
"No, I want that card deleted and a new one put on it." Inuyasha answered then heard as more keys were pressed on the keyboard.
"Okay, I'm ready for that new card number." The woman said then typed away as Inuyasha read the number off. "Now, what's the name on the card?"
"Phantom Taisho."
"The expiration date?"
"Ten Twenty-eight."
"And the three numbers on the back of the card?"
"One two three." Inuyasha answered. "I want to pay this payment, and any other charges that comes up - I want you to automatically take it from my account." There were some more clicks as the lady typed more on her keyboard before saying that the payment went through. "Alright, tell the doctor to give him another treatment and to do it right now." Inuyasha ordered before hanging up. He then made another call, putting this one on speaker as well.
"Ah, Phantom!" A male voice sang out. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your phone call? Tell me, what can I do for you?"
"Hello, Mayor Wantannabe, I wanted to let you know that I am willing to give that money to you - if still needed."
"Ah, yes!" Wantannabe said. "When can we meet?"
"How about we meet for lunch tomorrow?"
"Ah, yes, that'll be perfect!" Wantannabe exclaimed. "And would it be possible to get me regular?"
"Sure, my friend, see you tomorrow." Inuyasha said before hanging up. He wasn't sure what it was about Wantannabe, he never made friends to those he sold too; however, the fat balding man was growing on him.
He sighed as he placed his phone back into his pocket and waited on Kagome to come out.
"Inuyasha?" Sango whispered.
"Hmm?" Inuyasha hummed as he stared at the door that Kagome had walked through twenty minutes prior.
Sango, who was sitting behind him, leaned forward wrapping her arms around his shoulders from behind the car seat.
"That was really awesome of you to pay for the little boy's hospital treatments." Sango whispered as she tightened her arms around him.
The only response she got was a 'keh' as he scoffed, and a pat on the arms with a small smile on his face. After another squeeze, Sango released him as she sat back against the seat.
"Who was needing a refill?" Miroku asked as he wrapped his arm around Sango's shoulder, smiling down at her as she snuggled into his embrace.
"Kio." Inuyasha answered as he continued to stare at the door, he had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach and if Kagome didn't come out in five minutes, then he was going to barge in there and kill whoever dared to try and stop him. "Said that he would prefer that I'd get to him today but told him that was out of the question. "He's lucky that he dropped it before he pissed me off."
Miroku nodded but didn't say anything as, he too - as well as Sango - all stared down the door, willing Kagome to come out safe and sound. The more time Kagome stayed in there, the more nervous they all felt.
A few minutes later, Kagome came back out wiping at her face - however, instead of coming to the car and getting back in, she continued walking down the driveway. Confused as to what was going on, Inuyasha and the others exited the limo before jogging in her direction.
"Kagome?"
*X*
Kagome sucked in another deep breath before reaching up and knocked on the door then took a step back as she waited for the door to open.
"Oh, hi Kagome." The butler said with a slight sneer. "I suppose you're here to see your mother." he asked with a roll of his eyes as he stepped aside to let her come inside.
"Yes, thank you." Kagome said dryly as she walked inside.
"They are in the living area."
Kagome didn't answer as she moved her way into the living room, watching as her mother stood up when she saw her walking in the room.
"Kagome, dear, what brings you here?" Kagome's mother asked wringing her hands together.
"Oh, don't Kagome dear me!" Kagome snapped, not in the mood to deal with her shit. "You know damn well why I'm here!"
"Don't talk to your mother like that, you ungrateful little brat!" Her stepfather shouted as he stood up.
"Shut up!" Kagome yelled. "I did what you wanted! I married Phantom for you! I help up my end of the deal, why didn't you!? I got a call from the hospital saying that Hiro slipped into a coma last night and that they couldn't do anything because the fucking bill isn't paid yet! Why!?"
Kagome's stepfather stepped up, raised his hand up before bringing down with a resounding smack across Kagome's face. "You will not speak to us like that! We said that we would give you the money, we never said when!"
Kagome's face was still turned, her eyes wide with shock, her stepfather had never laid his hands on her before, she didn't know what to do or how to react. She looked up at her mom and saw her just staring at the ground not saying anything or doing anything to show that she disapproved of him doing that to her.
"Really mom?" Kagome yelled feeling betrayed by her mom. "You're not going to say anything!?"
"What do you want me to say, Kagome?" Her mother asked as she threw her hand up in the air before bringing it down to make contact with her leg.
"I want you to defend me and do what was agreed on!" Kagome screamed as tears flew down her face. "I married Phantom for that bitch! I want you to grow a fucking back bone and stand up to your bastard of a husband! I want you to use YOUR money that YOU work for so this dick can just be lazy and do nothing but control you and tell you what you can and can't spend your money on, I want you to use it to help me pay some bills like it was agreed on! I did what I was supposed to do!"
Kagome's neck snapped to the side once again as she got smacked again, but this time instead of her stepfather smacking her, it was her mother that did the smacking this time.
Shocked Kagome turned to face her mother once again, she for sure didn't expect her mom to put her hands on her. "You know what? Just forget it. Forget you ever knew me. Act as if you only have one daughter, because as far as I'm concerned you, your husband and your daughter are fucking dead to me."
"You are no longer welcomed here. You are no longer a part of this family." Kagome's stepfather said as he crossed his arms over his chest with a satified look on his face.
Kagome was about to say something, however, her phone dinged indicating that she had a new message - she dug her phone out of her pocket and looked at the screen.
"What?" Kagome whispered. Without looking at anyone, she walked out the mansion, silently vowing that she'd never come back here ever again.
As she stepped outside, Kagome looked down at her phone to make sure she read it right.
Hiro Higurashi's overdue bill has been paid by Phantom Taisho in the amount of $3,516.36. Confirmation number: 672309123456. Thank you for your payment.
Kagome didn't know how to feel; she felt happy that the bill was paid, of course, but she also felt irritated that Inuyasha had not came to her and had a conversation with her telling her that he wanted to pay the bill. She felt happy, irritated, sad because she vowed to never see her mother again, angry that her stepfather had slapped her, as well as not paying for the hospital bill like he said, and her mother did absolutely nothing about it, scared that she was going to lose her son - so many emotions swirled around her head that she didn't know what to do about it, so she just walked down the driveway - fixing to walk home to clear her mind. She felt ready to snap and she didn't want to snap at the people who has done nothing but help her.
As she walked, she heard car doors closing and knew that all three of the car's occupants were following her, the 'Kagome' that called from behind her solidified that for her. She stopped and took a deep breath as she closed her eyes and tilted her head up towards the sky.
"Kagome!" Inuyasha called again. "What are you doing? Where are you going?"
"I'm going home." Kagome answered as she started walking again. She could hear as Inuyasha started to jog to catch up to her, she felt as he gently gripped her shoulder so he could stop her and turn her around.
"Talk to me, Kagome." Inuyasha said gently. "What happened?"
"What do you think happened, Phantom!?" Kagome snapped not meaning to, it's just she was over her limit at the time and not able to control her emotions. "They won't pay for shit that has anything to do with me! But, as we were fighting, I get this message saying that the bill has been paid by no other than Phantom himself! Why would you do that without talking about it with me!? There is no way I can pay you back!" She screamed as more tears came falling down her face.
"Who said you had to pay me back?" Inuyasha asked with a cocked eyebrow.
"I'm not a fucking charity case!" Kagome yelled as she shoved Inuyasha making Sango and Miroku to step forward to stop any other type of physical altercation, however, they stopped as Inuyasha put his hand up in a stopping motion.
"And who said you were?" Inuyasha asked calmly, trying to contain his amusement, no one has ever had the balls to ever stand up against him and he found himself really enjoying her spitfire side. He also knew that with everything going on what with Hiro's health declining and, if he were to bet, he was pretty sure that there was a fight between her and her mother, so he knew her emotional state right now was hanging on by a thread and he wanted to let her have a chance to let out all her frustrations, even if he had to have him be her personal punching bag - he'd gladly do it, if only it meant that she would feel just a little better when she was done.
"I never asked for anyone's pity! Just file for divorce like I know you want to, get it over with now while I'm already on the fucking ground." Kagome said as she turned to walk away again, Inuyasha never gave her any sign on wanting to get a divorce, and logically she knew that - it's just, she was mentally taxed out and not thinking straight. She thought that once he saw her actually broken like this, he wouldn't want her anymore, and who could really blame him? However, she didn't get far at all as Inuyasha grabbed her arm and jerked her back to face him.
"Hey!" Inuyasha growled feeling his patients start to snap. "Who the fuck said anything about a divorce!? We are married, and that's that! For richer or for poorer, for sickness and in health was in our fucking vows! What's mine is yours and what's yours is mine! That means it's not my fucking money that I used to pay the hospital bill, it OUR money that I used to pay for OUR son's hospital bill! Do you understand, Kagome, OURS, you do not have to repay your own fucking money!"
Kagome couldn't say anything as her body was overcome with deep bodied sobs. Inuyasha sighed as he pulled her in for a tight, comforting hug. Kagome melted into his hug, having not felt this level of security since her father had passed away, as she fisted her hands in the back of his shirt.
after about ten minutes, Kagome's cries died off, Inuyasha pulled her away from him and looked her deep in the eyes. "Are you okay now?" He asked softly and a small smile spread across his face at her nod. "Where do you want to go now?" He asked as he brushed her hair away from her face, however, he didn't give her a chance to say anything when he saw the bruise on the side of her face. His eyebrows furrowed as he stepped closer, gently tilted her face so he could inspect her cheek easier, and a deep growl rose from his chest. "Which one slapped you?"'
"What?" Sango asked as both her and Miroku stepped forward to get a better look.
Kagome looked towards the ground as she chewed on her lip.
"Kagome." Inuyasha growled making her look up at him with wide eyes. "Who slapped you?"
"Both my stepfather and my mother." Kagome asked in a meek voice as she looked down at the ground again.
Inuyasha growled as he turned on his heels and headed back towards the house, he was way passed being pissed - how dare they hit her!?
"Ph-Phantom." Kagome called stuck in place with her hand outreached towards him. When he almost made it to the porch Kagome shook out and ran after him, once she caught up, she reached out and grabbed him by the arm - he stopped and looked at her with murder in his eyes, which she knew wasn't directed towards her. "Please, I don't want to be here anymore. They're not worth it, I never want to see any of them again, I just want to go."
Inuyasha sighed but nodded before looking at Miroku. "Make her mother's company go down."
"On it." Miroku said before making some phone calls.
Inuyasha nodded, looking back at Kagome. "Do you need to go anywhere else?"
"Um, yeah, I need to go to my old apartment so I can grab some clothes and a few other things." Kagome answered.
"Okay, let's go."
*X*
Walking down the hallway to her old apartment building, Kagome and the others walked up to what used to be Kagome's home.
Kagome groaned as she read what was on the door, Notice of Eviction! If you wish to receive your stuff from this unit you must pay your overdue payment. She noticed that the lock had already been replaced so she had no choice but to go ask Mrs. Okana to unlock her door.
Kagome turned on her heel and walked a few doors down before knocking on someone's door. The others followed her watching as an older woman answered the door.
"Oh, it's you. What do you want?" Mrs. Okana asked with a roll of her eyes.
"Mrs. Okana, please, let me get my things and then I'll be out of your hair - you'll never have to see me again."
"Not without paying up, sweet cheeks." Mrs. Okana said with a smirk.
"But, Mrs. Okana, I-I don't ha-"
"How much does she owe?" Inuyasha asked interrupting Kagome.
"She's two months behind. Nine hundred fifty for each month plus a late fee of fifty dollars for both months making the total due two thousand dollars." Mrs. Okana answered.
Inuyasha took a wad of cash out of his pocket and counted out two thousand dollars before giving that to Mrs. Okana.
Mrs. Okana narrowed her eyes at Inuyasha before she counted out the money, she sighed before taking her keys off the hook by the door and walking passed them to open the door to Kagome's old apartment.
They all walked inside the small apartment and looked around as Kagome went to gather her possessions. Inuyasha, Miroku and Sango looked at the worn down, mix-matched furniture she had in the living room before walking to the kitchen seeing a table with two chairs that didn't match, they looked through the cabinets and refrigerator seeing that she really didn't have any food and had to wonder how long was it that she had something substantial to eat before she came to live with them.
Kagome walked into her room, grabbed a duffel bag before going to her closet, taking her clothes out of her closet and dresser before throwing the clothes in her bag, grabbing her shoes and throwing them in the bag as well before grabbing the few pictures of her dad that she had in picture frames and placed them gently in her bag, doing the same thing to the pictures she had of her son. The last thing she grabbed was her wallet before tossing that in her bag and then zipping it up and walking out of the room to go to her son's room, grabbing a duffel bag before packing his clothes, gaming system and games and the few toys she was able to buy for him before zipping that bag up as well. She walked out of his room to find the others looking through her things and suddenly felt very self-conscious.
"Um, I know I don't have a lot, but it got me by." Kagome whispered as she stared at the floor.
"Got you by?" Inuyasha asked. "You don't have any food; how did you eat?"
"I told you." Kagome said with a shrug. "Hiro's treatments came before me eating, I haven't had anything besides ramen and crackers for over a year, I just couldn't afford food." She said as she looked up at Inuyasha. "Can I ask you one more thing and I promise not to ask for anything else?"
Inuyasha cocked an eyebrow. "Kagome, you don't have to ask me for anything, this thing doesn't have to be the last thing either, you can have whatever you need." He said as he took out his wallet before taking out a card and handing it to Kagome. "That card has an unlimited amount on it, use it for whatever you need. No need to ask permission to use your own money."
Kagome looked at Inuyasha with teary eyes before launching herself in Inuyasha's arms, Inuyasha caught her easily as she held onto him tightly as she soaked his shirt in her tears once again, which he didn't mind one bit, he knew she been through the ringer for a long time now and now she doesn't have to worry about anything. He kissed the top of her head as he held her tighter liking how well she fit in his arms, it was a perfect fit.
"Thank you Inuyasha, you have no idea how much I appreciate this." Kagome whispered as she pulled away wiping her eyes dry.
"You're welcome." Inuyasha said as he gently removed Kagome's hand away from her face so he could wipe her tears himself.
"Yes, I need to go to the loan place so I can pay off my loan, so I don't lose my father's car." Kagome said as she leaned into Inuyasha's hand. "And then I want to go back to the hospital so I can be with Hiro until he wakes up."
Inuyasha nodded before grabbing Kagome's hand, leading her out to the car with the others following behind him.
I hope you liked this chapter! Until next time, bye!
