Hey :P It's Wednesday so it's time for my usual weekly update. I wrote this one after I watched Finding Neverland, it's inspired by a particular scene :3 I hope you guys like!
Ages:
Ash: 24
Misty: 24
James: 31
Ben: 5
Katie: 5
Disclaimer: I own only Ben and Katie :3
"C'mon you two, it's time for dinner!" James called as he handed me cutlery to place onto the table. He poked his head round where Ben and Katie were sat cross legged in front of the television, gesturing to his god children of the steaming plates that were on the table. "Hurry, it'll get cold."
Without hesitation and upon hearing the mention of food, Ben dashed to the dinner table and seated himself in his usual spot. Although Katie too was hungry, she took the time to turn the TV off and make her way to the table daintily. I smiled at the thought of her as James placed a bowl of pokemon food on the floor for me. She was such a little lady.
The start of mealtime seemed to go down without a hitch. The lavender haired male piled spaghetti Bolognese onto the young children's plates and buttered bread for them to eat. He poured them drinks and acted like the good man he was. Katie chatted away to him happily and his green orbs sparkled back at her little girl. He adored both his god children but the orange haired female just captured his heart. She was so sweet and smiley and loved him back so much too. Ben, on the other hand, had been quiet the whole time, just pushing his food around the plate. James noticed this, putting his glass down after a sip from it and glancing over at the raven haired male with a slight frown in the middle of his forehead.
"What's up, Ben? Are you gonna eat or just push it around your plate?"
I glanced up at Ben when he replied with a short "no" and noticed the scowl on his face. I don't think any of us understood what his "no" actually meant. After a few minutes of silence other than the sound of chewing and cutlery on the plates, Ben spoke.
"Isn't mom coming down for dinner?"
The older man forced a small smile at the young boy, stopping eating for a second to give Ben his full attention.
"I'm afraid not. I think she's sleeping but even if she was awake, I think she's feeling too sick to eat."
Sighing somewhat sadly, I focused my eyes on Ben and watched him stay silent but finally started to eat. Ash was away on yet another League Tournament and because Misty was pregnant with their third child, none of the family could go with him. Misty had called her best friend James to help out with the twins and other duties that had to be done. She had made sure it was okay with his wife and family and it was. Katie simply adored having her favourite relative around the house but I could tell Ben had a different opinion. While he didn't openly state his feelings, it was quite obvious to me and James, though the adult did his best to get his godson to warm up to him.
I was snapped back to reality as I heard James grumble to the chocolate orbed boy.
"Ben you didn't have to stuff it all in at once!" he rolled his eyes, going to pat Ben gently on the back but he avoided his Uncles touch before he could. "What did I tell you? Go around the edge of the food so it's not too hot and don't stuff it all in."
The little boy had finally had enough of everything and spat his food out, banging his fists on the table.
"Shut up, you're not my dad!"
And with that, Ben took off like a rocket and into the living room again, slamming the door. Katie and I glanced at each other without saying anything but James groaned, following after Ben. He had seen the tears in his eyes and knew that Misty would kill him if she knew he had upset her little angel. I secretly followed after the lavender haired male, peeping through a crack in the door to see James approach Ben.
"Ben…" was all he uttered as he sat next to him, trying to reach his arm out to him. Ben was having none of it and slapped his hand away.
"Just stop it! I know you're looking after us because mommy told you to but I don't want you to! You'll never love her like daddy, does, stop trying to replace him!"
James' green eyes grew full of confusion and sadness as Ben began to cry into his hands. I felt a lump grow in my own throat. I knew as well as any how Benjamin adored his father, he was his number one fan and could do no wrong in his eyes. Although this wasn't his intention, it seemed to the little boy that by James taking over Ash's role. Ash was being replaced.
James brushed his hair out of his eyes before moving Ben's hands away from his face and wiping away his tears with a tissue.
"Is that was this is all about?" he sighed, growing more saddened when his godson nodded. "Listen, I never meant to make it feel like I was trying to replace your daddy. That is the complete opposite of what I wanted do to. I just wanted to come here and make things easier for you but I clearly made it worse and I'm sorry. No one could replace your father, especially not me. Even though I'm here for the moment instead of him, he isn't gone and certainly not forgotten. Not by you or Katie or Pikachu and not your mommy. No one."
I pushed my nose deeper through the crack in the door to see James brush Ben's raven locks out of his eyes and pull him in for a tender hug.
"But what you said about me not being able to love your mommy as much as your dad? That's not true. I do love her as much as he does but in a completely different way. When your dad makes your mommy laugh, his heart pounds while I'm just happy I was funny enough for her. When I see your mom all dressed up I just think 'Wow, Ash is a lucky guy' while your daddy is thinking: 'She's mine. I have her.' I do love her, Ben, just not the way daddy does and no one could replace that love that he has for her."
Ben finally nodded and returned the hug, feeling confident in his Uncle that his father wouldn't be forgotten by anyone, even though he was hundreds of miles away. The two stayed silent for a moment before James pulled away from the hug, looking at the boy.
"Your daddy and I are not in competition…" he sighed, kissing the top of his head before looking distantly at a piece of furniture. "Not anymore."
Ben frowned in confusion for a second but just shrugged, running off to go back to dinner when James suggested so.
Ben and James never really understood each other. Sure, they got on but the little boy was always confused by who the lavender haired man was to him. He knew James was closer to his mother than his father and was married and had many kids of his own. To a five year old boy, the situation was rather confusing. Even if James wasn't blood related to Ash and Misty and their family, nor would he ever be. But he was so good to them all, he might as well have been.
The End.
