Hey :P It's Wednesday so that means it's time for my usual update. I wrote this one yesterday as we finally got snow where I live but it melted by the time school ended so I was inspired for this chapter :3 I hope you enjoy :P
Ash: 24
Misty: 24
Katie: 4
Ben: 4
Disclaimer: I own only the story :3
"Daddy, daddy, wake up!"
My eyes shot open to the sound of Katie's frantic voice but the person she was asking for did not even twitch.
"Daddy, daddy, it's a disaster!"
Suddenly, Ash's chocolate orbs opened and he sat bolt upright, squinting sleepily around the room. It was just gone six in the morning but because it was winter, it might as well have been the dead of the night. Ash scratched his stomach and was about to return back to slumber when Katie whacked him in the face with a pillow.
He was about to let out a shriek of shock but I stopped him in case he woke the sleeping lady beside him. My raven haired best friend pouted, scratching his stomach sleepily once more.
"What's wrong, Katie, why did you wake me up?"
The orange haired little girl tugged on her father's raglan long sleeve t shirt and I could see the look of anxiety on her face now that my eyes had focused properly.
"Daddy, something is terribly wrong!"
Upon hearing this, both Ash and I's hearts stopped in panic and we felt as if we were being frozen. My mind was being filled with a million possibilities and all of them were bad. Ash didn't do much thinking and unlike me, began frantically asking questions.
"What's wrong? Are you okay? Is Ben okay? Is Misty okay? What's happened?"
Katie didn't seem to have the patience for her father's questions and tugged harder on his sleeve, indicating that he should follow her. Ash didn't hesitate to leap up and scurry along the hall with his daughter, barely giving me enough time to jump onto his shoulder. Damn, I'm getting too old for all this.
The little girl dragged us both along the hallway and into her and Ben's room. Ash and I saw Ben was still sleeping and knew at once this meant we had to be quiet. Katie had no respect for her sleeping twin and forcefully pulled us over to the window, causing Ash to nearly whack his head on the glass in the process.
"Look daddy, look out there! It's hideous!"
I frowned and glanced at my best friend while Ash peered out the window, checking for any abnormalities on the street below. There were street lights and that was normal. Curtains closed of the houses opposite? Normal. Cars parked in the road and on the driveways? Perfectly normal. Piles of melting snow on the concrete and dripping off the window sills? That may seem normal to anyone else but it certainly wasn't to Katie. She went to sleep last night and the world was covered in white frosting. Now it had suddenly disappeared, leaving a trace of slushy, brown stuff.
"Where is the snow and why is it gone? What happened to the snow?" Katie whispered to her father and I, her aquamarine orbs filling with worried tears.
"Katie…" Ash said his daughter's name fondly as he lead her out into the hall so he could speak to her properly without the fear of waking Ben. "That's what snow does. That's why the world isn't always covered in snow because it melts."
The orange haired little girl listened to her father's explanation before blinking her eyes at the both of us.
"But why does it melt?"
"Why does the snow melt?" Ash repeated, causing Katie to nod. "That's a good question. It's because the world gets warmer and the snow melts away."
Katie was completely unsatisfied by his answer.
"But why does snow melt when the weather gets warmer?"
Ash opened his mouth to speak before turning to look at me for answers. I just rolled my eyes and folded my arms, causing him to look back at Katie.
"I don't know exactly. It just does."
"But that's not fair…" Katie whispered, blinking back the tears in her eyes and her mouth forming into a pout. "I miss the snow."
Ash smiled lovingly at his daughter, pulling her on his lap for a cuddle. He wiped the tears from her eyes before looking right at her.
"I know you miss the snow but it will be back. The snow is like an old friend and you don't always see it but when you do, it's always super special and something you'll always remember. It has to go away like some friends do but just because you get used to the world without snow, doesn't mean you forget what it's like. You'll always appreciate its wonder."
Katie didn't care much for Ash's deep explanation but I certainly did. I was in awe at his sudden way with words and if I'm honest, quite touched by it.
"See, it's like James going away. You love him so much, right?"
The little girl smiled and nodded before putting her thumb sleepily between her lips.
"And if he went away, you wouldn't forget about him. It's just like the snow. It will be back soon or maybe in a year or so. The point is that it doesn't matter because when it happens again, it will be wonderful."
Katie finally nodded and cuddled into her father, allowing him to kiss her cheeks and carry her back to bed for a few more hours sleep. On the way, Misty appeared from round the doorway of their bedroom and looked lovingly at her husband.
"I had no idea you were so wonderful with comparing snow to old friends. I would like see more of what you can do with words."
I groaned as Ash gave Misty a cheeky look before pecking her quickly on the lips. I vowed to run away downstairs and certainly not to go in their bedroom. It may have been cold outside but I knew it was about to get heated inside.
The End.
There you go! Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I haven't written some Ash and Katie cute bonding in a while so that's what I did. Of course there was some cheeky stuff between Ash and Misty at the end that I hope wasn't uncalled for :P Thanks again and I'll be back next week like always :3
