Hey :P Sorry for not uploading last week, I was working again and also had a really bad cold so just got home and flopped basically :/ This story has been a bit of a drama to be honest. This is the second version of it I wrote and I think I'm happier with this one. It was hard to get it how I wanted because it was based on a scene from Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" where Willy Wonka talks to his dad. That scene was moving because of the lack of words and music which obviously was hard to capture quite the same. However, I hope you enjoy :3
Ages:
James: 33
Katie: 6
Disclaimer: I own Katie :3
"Why am I doing this again?" James groaned as he sat down in his parents' office, playing with his hair nervously.
I was about to answer him from my position on the window sill when Katie got there first, cuddling into her anxious uncle's side.
"Because it's the right thing to do."
Upon hearing this, I could see a fraction of tension escape the man's body and he gave his goddaughter a smile, pulling her nearer.
"It may be the right thing but it sure isn't easy."
I couldn't help but look at the lavender haired man and feel sympathy. Like most of our group, he too didn't have an easy upbringing and after years of encouragement, today was the day he wanted to talk to his mother and father. I could tell he had no idea what he wanted to say but being in his childhood home was a start.
Katie tugged on her uncle's hand and made him walk with her over to where there were dozens of pictures on one of the walls. I decided to join them and couldn't help but get lost in the sea of memories. There were pictures of all different years and of James in the garden, James in his room and James with his parents. Before I could say anything, Katie piped up and asked the question that was echoing around my brain.
"You look so happy. Were they really that bad?"
James sighed and tapped his chin before looking down at his goddaughter, resting his arm on her head. When he spoke, his voice was low and raspy.
"What makes a bad parent? I don't know if they were bad parents, they just always seemed to be trying to make me into something I wasn't. I've always needed to be left to become my own person."
Katie just nodded and rested her head against her uncle's arm, continuing to look at the pictures on the walls. I wondered if she was doing that because she truly didn't have anything to say or she was letting James let out his feelings. Either way, Katie was a smart kid.
"I always knew I could never go back to them after… Nevermind." He trailed off and gave me a slight look. I gave him a sympathetic smile and it took him for a few minutes before he continued.
"I don't want their acceptance but I know they won't like how I am now. Married to a woman they didn't choose, enough kids to start a zoo and tattoos. They would faint if they saw how I change my hair or the way I dress."
The orange haired female had been sucking her thumb and took it out, giving James a slight scowl.
"I like the art on your arm. And the way your dress. And of course your hair."
James smiled lovingly down at her and ruffled her hair in a gentle manner so as not to mess up her style.
"I know you do." Was all he uttered before his eyes went back up to the pictures and he began continuing to ponder Katie's question. He was so distracted that he didn't see that she had already gone off to look at the opposite wall.
"I did seem so happy and I was happy when I was left being me. I only was unhappy when they were forcing me to be posh when I wasn't and not allowing me to do certain things."
When both James and Katie remained silent for a few moments, I turned around to where the little girl was pointing open mouthed.
"Look, uncle James." She uttered simply before letting out a breath of wonder.
The lavender haired male let out a curious noise before turning round to join her. I followed them and stopped in my tracks when I saw what she was pointing at.
From far away they look like nothing but when you approach them, they are everything.
"No way…" James gasped, peering at the wall and looking completely at loss for words.
James' parents had been collecting newspaper articles and pictures of their son for years and watching all of his achievements. They knew he opened his own clothing line with his wife. They knew he became a part time tattoo artist. They knew his best friend was Misty. They knew all of his family. James didn't have to worry about telling them a thing, they already knew everything.
Before I knew what was going on, I saw two people approach James' back and put one of their hands on each of their shoulders. James was too in shock to jump properly but he turned around to face his parents, his eyes shaking slightly.
None of them said a word but I think it was the silence that somehow said everything that needed to be said.
James cleared his throat and looked at his parents, his face still laced with an expression I hadn't seen before.
"I'm… I'm real shocked."
He looked at his feet and ran a hand through his short hair that he had been so worried to show off to his parents'.
When a short silence resumed, it was his father who was brave enough to break it.
"After all these years, James…" he began, perhaps for the first time looking at his son with fondness. "You haven't listened to a word we've said."
James just smiled and shut his eyes as he was pulled into his parent's arms.
"Not once."
I carefully jumped onto Katie's shoulder and together we watched the scene. James had been so afraid to show his new self to his parents but now I could see they couldn't be happier to have his tattooed arms wrapped around them.
Sometimes we can worry with all of our might over something and it can turn out perfectly fine in the end. Sometimes you just have to leave it up to fate. James' parents could have spent years forcing their son to be a certain way but instead, they finally let him be who he was. And because they left things to the breeze, James turned into the man we now know and love.
The End.
There you go! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I'm a little nervous about this one because it shows more of mine (and AAML-TAML's really) version of future James. This is my vision of him but despite the image like he mentions, he's still such a soft cutie :3 Thanks for reading and I'll be back on Monday for the second chapter of PS: I Miss You :P See you then!
