Hello :P It is Wednesday and I am back with a new chapter. Since me and my TT's usual discussions/ideas, I've been enjoying the wonderful friendship of James and Misty so I decided to upload a chapter of them today. I was going to upload my most recent one which was more light hearted but I found this bit of angst and well, wisdom like the title suggests and decided to go with this one :P I hope you enjoy!
Ages:
Ash: 17
Misty: 17
James: 24
Disclaimer: I own only the story :P Also, of course I don't own The Little Mermaid. That's also a headcanon of mine and AAML-TAML that that is the film Ash and Misty enjoy watching together because it parallels many aspects of their relationship :3
My ears pricked up as there was a knock at the door. I glanced behind me at the sniffling heap under the duvet that was Misty before making my way to answer it.
It was quite a tricky job for my paws could not reach the handle. I gave it my best jump and used my weight to open the door before pushing my nose through the crack and opening it with my paw.
I was greeted by James giving me a smile but his forehead was creased with worry.
"I hear Misty's here…" he began to chew his lip as I gave him a sad nod and lead him into the Cerulean Gym.
James let out a quiet sigh and my own body couldn't help but be filled with the weight that was anxiety. He knew as well as any that there weren't so many good memories linked with this place so things must be bad if Misty had sought refuge there.
He followed me along the halls and to Misty's childhood bedroom, his eyes glancing around along the way. He met my gaze as he saw his best friend hiding under the duvet. I jumped onto the bed next to her while he moved what he was carrying to just one hand and he reached out to knock on the open door.
"Special delivery for Misty Williams…" he mumbled softly to her, his brow furrowed in nervous anticipation for how she was going to react.
Misty jumped slightly upon hearing her best friend's voice and she sat up, removing the duvet away from her face. She groaned at the bright sunshine coming in from the door and windows, reaching to pat down her hair.
"What's all this…?" she muttered back, trying to be curious but her dull eyes not being able to put on an act.
James smiled at her and sat down on the bed next to her, handing her a cookie in a plastic bag from the local coffee shop.
As I was sat near Misty, I could hear her heart rate speed up as she saw that James had bought her comfort food. She was thinking what he had heard. She was worrying in case he was worried about her. She was worrying in case she seemed weak and needy, even if he was her best friend.
Misty swallowed her buzzing thoughts and just gave James a smile, accepting the cookie from him.
He continued smiling at her, shuffling even nearer to her.
"I heard there was a sad little woman here who needed a cup of tea…" he glanced at her and handed her the polystyrene takeaway cup before playfully poking her nose. "I couldn't find one so you'll do."
This was the first time in many hours that I heard Misty giggle. I snuggled further into her side. I hoped that between James and I, and Ash when he came round, we would be able to make her complete once again.
"Thanks James…" she reached out and smiled at him while squeezing his hand gratefully.
She tried to be brave but I heard her gulp before her pretty eyes were pooled with tears once again.
James just sighed sadly and reached to put her food and drink on the bedside table before wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close to his chest.
"What the hell happened, munchkin? I was so deep asleep in my flat I didn't hear a thing and then when I wake up I got so many texts from everyone else saying things got pretty heated."
Misty just sniffed from burying her head in her best friend's chest, her arm going further around him for comfort and her nails digging slightly into his back at the painful memories. James didn't pry further and just sat with her, playing with the back of her hair until she was ready to speak.
"Ash and I had this fight…" she trailed off and gulped. I assumed even more tears pooled in her eyes and began to fall on James' shirt when they seeped out.
James chewed his lip before pressing a comforting kiss to her head, resting his cheek against it after.
"Like your typical old married couple bickering?" he asked hopefully, his mouth making an attempt to twitch into a slight smirk.
Misty swallowed miserably and shook her head against his chest. Soon enough she pulled away and looked at James and let him wipe her tears for her. She blushed slightly, fearing she was acting weak but couldn't help but be comforted by her best friend and wanted to vent to him about everything.
"No, James. It was a proper fight. It hasn't been this bad in ages…" she whimpered slightly, her fingers going to her bangs and twiddling with them as she thought.
When she didn't speak, James took his turn.
"Well… You guys are going through a hard time since-".
"Please don't." was all she uttered, looking back at her best friend with wide aquamarine orbs that were filled with sadness, hurt and loss.
James swallowed his own emotion back and pressed another kiss to her head, pressing his cheek back once again.
Misty had recently been through something no 17 year old should go through. She fell pregnant and such a tender age and although it was unplanned and unpleasant in some people's eyes, she and Ash and everyone around us was overjoyed. They were so ready for the challenge of parenthood together and their world came crashing down when she suffered a miscarriage.
The red headed female just sniffed and fought back the tears of her lost baby, moving her head so her chin rested on James' shoulder comfort.
"It's just been really rocky for us recently. I mean we always bicker and we keep getting into fights but this one was horrendous. We said things we didn't mean but especially Ash."
Before she could go into detail, James moved Misty so he was looking right at her and his brow was furrowed protectively.
"Do I need to sharpen my knives?"
Although what he was saying was completely exaggerated, he wouldn't hesitate to give Ash a thorough yelling at if he thought she was being treated any less than she deserved.
Misty just sighed at her best friend and cuddled back into his shoulder so he knew to be quiet and just continue listening to her. After a little while of James stroking her back gently, she continued.
"I just think everything got to him, you know? He started saying this stuff that was really irrelevant and immature and pretty mean. I know he didn't mean it because he's usually so sweet and laid back but it still hurt."
When James just grunted in his attempt to hold his tongue, Misty pulled away and looked at her best friend. She was chewing her lip and she was looking right at him, her eyes full of worry and vulnerability.
"Do you think it's over? We both took off last night and I came here and he went god knows where. Do you think I'm going to lose him?"
When a tear trickled down Misty's cheek, James just sighed and wiped it with his thumb, not answering her question and asking her his own.
"Were you guys yelling at each other?"
Both Misty and I blinked, expecting him to come out with comforting words. She sniffed and nodded, her cheeks going slightly pinker at the pain of all that had happened the previous night.
"Yes, a lot." She sighed sadly, looking down at her lap and beginning to pick a hangnail on her middle finger.
James just gave her a small smile and tapped her chin so she was looking at him.
"Then you're going to be absolutely fine."
Misty blinked even more at James' next approach and glanced at me with curious eyes. James just sighed quietly and moved Misty so she was back under the covers, climbing on the bed next to her and leaning against the bed head.
"Can I give you a piece of advice?" he glanced at her and wrapped an arm around her as Misty nodded as if to say 'yes please'. "One day you're going to miss all this."
When both Misty and I remained baffled, James continued.
"One day you're going to settle down and have your own children and be married for decades and you're going to miss all this fighting. Do you know why? Well I'm gonna tell you. Fighting means passion and fighting means you still care about one and other."
James paused for breath and Misty breathed out, her eyes wide and ears even wider as she listened to what her best friend had to say.
"The only time you should ever worry after fighting is if there wasn't much fight. If you gave up and didn't really have anything to say then yes, you should worry. If you truly love each other and are meant to be with each other and care about each other with every single piece of who you are, then you're going to yell and you're going to fight and you're going lose your voice trying to get out all your feelings."
Misty let out another shaky sigh and she moved her hand over her heart, reflecting over what James was saying and how much she adored her raven haired boyfriend.
"That was us last night, we did all those things."
James smiled at his best friend and reached out stroke her bangs before linking his hand to hers.
"Then you're going to be absolutely fine." He squeezed her hand reassuringly and nodded before continuing for a final time. "Think of it this way; if you fight, it means you're alight. And if you're alight, you're not burning out. And I know, you and Ash are going to be blazing with love for a very long time."
I breathed out my own sigh of relief when Misty sighed contentedly and she cuddled into her best friend as they began to share the cookie James had bought while watching the Little Mermaid together.
Not that it needed to happen often but that film always reaffirmed Misty's love for Ash and I knew that James' words would stick with her for a very long time. You can apply his wisdom to pretty much anything in life. If you continue being passionate and giving everything your all, it will always pay off. If you fight fire with fire, you'll get somewhere. But if you fight fire with ice, not so much.
Just take a look at everyone in our close group of friendship. Giving something everything you've got, is always going to lead to good things. We promise.
The End.
There you go! Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 James and Misty's friendship is something I love to write about and is very dear to me also because I know how much a good friendship can mean. It's also special because it's quite an unusual thing in the fandom of a rocket being really good friends with a twerp. Probably some people find it strange but to me and my TT, it makes sense. There's quite a few similarities, especially in their upbringings when you look into it :P Besides, I love their dynamics because they can go from wise and sharing stuff to goofy as hell which is also super fun! So I hope you enjoyed this. I enjoyed writing it :3 Thanks again and I'll be back in a week so see you then!
