Hello :P It is Wednesday so I am back with a new update. I got the inspiration from this from the lady I work with. She was wearing a locket and showed me the little drawing inside. Her granddaughter did for her what Katie does for Delia at around the same age. Normally I get ideas from TV shows or movies so this was fun to turn the real life event from a granddaughter to grandmother into a chapter. I hope you enjoy :3
Ages:
Ben: 5
Katie: 5
Delia: 43
Disclaimer: I own Ben and Katie :3
"Aww Grammy, c-can't you tell us another s-story?" Katie breathed out now that story time was over and stretched her feet out under the blanket in dissatisfaction.
While his twin sister pouted, Ben took a different approach and sighed, looking up at Delia with round, brown orbs as he clasped his hands under his chin.
"Please Grammy? I just love hearing stories about daddy when he was a little boy like me."
I watched as the chestnut haired female couldn't resist either of her grandchildren's eyes or gestures and she shook her head fondly at the pair. Her eyes simply shone with adoration for the children belonging to her dear Ash and Misty. Her son made her heart feel so full that she didn't know if it would have room for Ben and Katie but boy was she wrong. They filled a space in her heart she didn't know was empty.
Delia smiled fondly at chucked Katie's chin to make her pout disappear and she reached her other hand out to stroke Ben's cheek. The two children bared the same grin at their grandmother, waiting for her to give them their own way. She laughed airily when she saw the look in their eyes and tapped them both on the noses.
"Yes of course I can tell you another story."
She met my gaze briefly and smirked as the twins beamed and high fived, getting ready to settle down for story time part two. Their innocent eyes grew filled with sadness when Delia stood up and put her hands on her hips. She smiled down at Ben and Katie reassuringly.
"Don't worry, we will have that story. But it's almost past lunch time and I think your mommy would be upset if I didn't feed you."
Katie nodded and soon smiled up at her grandmother, her feet stretching back out under the blanket in trust. Meanwhile, Ben gasped quietly to himself and his hand went to his stomach. I smirked fondly at the mini Ash. He clearly couldn't believe that he had forgotten all about food.
Delia laughed fondly and headed off to the kitchen to wash her hands before preparing the children's lunch. Seeing her grandmother exit the room, Katie quickly flung the blanket off her legs and rushed after her, tugging on her arm for attention.
When the older female turned back and smiled down at the orange haired little girl, Katie smiled up at her grandmother.
"Please can I help you make l-lunch? Please?"
My heart couldn't help but melt at the little girl's childlike innocence and politeness. Delia was one of the kindest and easy going people I knew, just like my best friend, but it made me proud that the twins didn't really take advantage of this and let their manners slip.
Delia giggled happily upon hearing this and nodded her head, holding her hand out to the mini Misty.
"I would love it if you helped me make lunch, sweetheart."
After Katie beamed and trotted off to the kitchen to follow her grandmother, Ben's little voice filled the air as he too scuffled after the two other females.
"Can I come too, Grammy? And can I watch one of daddy's battles on the kitchen TV?"
As the little boy's chocolate orbs grew filled with hope, Delia once again smiled but at him this time and she nodded her head. She held her other hand out to him.
"That's a good idea. Ash will love it when I tell him you asked to watch his battles."
And so, those three Ketchum's headed off the kitchen, Ben beaming at the idea of making his father happy and Katie beaming that she was going to help her grandmother out.
When I slowly made my way to the kitchen to join them all, Ben was already happily seated at the kitchen table and watching his father and Katie was sat on the counter top while Delia diced some cheese.
I went to sit next to Ben but my eyes focused on Delia and Katie rather than the battle. Give me a break. I participated in that battle with my best friend. I knew how it was going to end.
I smiled lovingly as Katie held onto the counter top with one hand as she carefully leaned forward and stroked the locket that was around her grandmother's neck.
"I like that." She stated simply, moving further off the counter to stroke it once again and properly this time.
Delia smiled upon hearing this, pressing a quick kiss to the child's forehead as she leaned across to put the cheese onto two separate plates.
"Do you, darling?"
When Delia paused to look at Katie briefly, the orange haired little girl swung her legs and nodded her head happily.
"Yep I do." She stated simply before relaxing under her grandmother's soothing tone and deciding to try out a longer sentence. "Uncle James likes j-jewel thingies. I like… I like his ones too."
I watched as Delia smiled lovingly at her granddaughter once again and reached out to stroke her forehead as she listened. Normally this loving look would have been at the mention of the other male but today Katie was showing off how her stutter wasn't close to stopping her.
After the pride passed through Delia's body, she then let out a quiet sigh and couldn't help but show off a small blush.
"James has great jewellery, you're right. And he's very nice for letting you borrow it."
Katie beamed upon hearing this compliment towards one of her favourite people and nodded her head happily, her legs swinging all the more.
"He is." She spoke simply but her young voice was full of gratitude. "I-I know what that is cos of him. Isn't it a l-lock?"
Delia glanced at Katie from beginning to slice a chicken breast, a gentle smile taking over her face when she heard her words.
"A locket?" she corrected casually before smiling more and nodding her head when Katie did. "Yes you're right. You put a picture in it."
"I knew that…" Katie hummed to herself and glanced over at Ben when he let out a loud whoop. I smirked and my own eyes went to him. Yes, Ben, I was winning the battle with your father.
When the little girl went back to her grandmother, she was looking at the locket around her neck while playing with her hair.
"W-Who do you have in yours?"
Delia stood up from bending down to the cupboards to lift Ben and Katie's juice cups out. When she looked at the little girl, she sighed quietly and brushed off her hands.
"Who's picture do I have in mine?" she asked before putting her hands on her hips and continuing when Katie nodded her head. "I don't have a photo of anyone in it, sweetheart."
Katie furrowed her brow most dramatically upon hearing this, looking at her grandmother as if it was the most terrible thing in the world.
"No one in there?" she blinked, her eyes growing more with concern as Delia shook her head. "How'd you get it?"
Delia headed off to the other cupboard to fetch her own glass and plate but she stayed looking at Katie so the little girl knew the conversation was continuing. When she put the objects on the counter top, she scratched her head.
"Professor Oak got me it for my birthday."
Katie nodded her head upon hearing this and stopped swinging her legs but smiled happily.
"T-That's nice. I'm glad he's a good friend to you."
When Delia nodded her head and smiled but stayed silent, Katie soon went back to furrowing her brow.
"If… If he got you it, why didn't he put a p-photo of himself in it?"
I watched as Delia blushed slightly upon hearing this but she smirked, tilting her head on one side bemusedly.
"Because we're just friends…" she tilted her head back and shrugged, coming back over to Katie with her own glass and plate.
Katie remained silent for a few moments upon hearing this and pulled her legs to her chest. When she spoke again, her fingers were straightening out her own bangs.
"Haven't you ever been in love?"
Delia was shocked upon hearing this question out of Katie's mouth and she glanced at me. I glanced back and shrugged. Katie must have found out from somewhere that you put a loved one in a locket. Or perhaps she had figured it out for herself seeing as they often hung close to the heart. She was young but she was smart. And like her mother, she was a romantic.
The chestnut haired female smiled at Katie and she spoke to her whilst preparing her own lunch.
"Of course I have been in love…" she breathed out, briefly moving her hands away from her knife to tighten her ponytail. "I was in love with your daddy's dad while we were still together."
Katie furrowed her brow upon hearing this, clearly not satisfied with her answer. Nor understanding why they were no longer together if they had once been in love. Delia saw her expression and smirked lovingly, choosing to talk instead of letting Katie ask more questions.
"Maybe I just more often love people rather than be in love with them. Either way, there's nothing in my locket right now. That doesn't mean to say there won't ever be."
Delia's speech was somewhat deep and wistful but she remained smiling at her granddaughter. Her eyes grew filled with shock and worry when Katie did an action that was most like her brother and jumped down from the counter all by herself.
"Katie!" Delia breathed out with shock and worry as Katie quickly dusted off her knees before rushing into the other room.
She was about to follow her when Ben turned around from watching his father, his rumbling stomach loud enough to be heard over the television.
"How long until lunch, Grammy?"
Delia stopped looking in concern in Katie's direction and rubbed her forehead, giving Ben a fond smile as she went back to quickly wash the lettuce.
"Not long, little man, not long."
As Ben nodded and went back to watch the final battle featuring Ash and myself, Katie came running back into a room, a tiny piece of paper in her fist.
Delia furrowed her brow curiously upon seeing this and went down to Katie's level as she held out her hand.
"What is it, sweetheart?" she asked, her hand reaching out to stroke her forehead as she spoke to the little girl.
Katie shook her head to dismiss her grandmother's worrying hand and she gave her a big smile, placing the tiny piece of paper in Delia's hand.
"I… I drew me and you. No one's locket should be empty of someone they love."
Delia's eyes filled with slight loving tears upon hearing this and she breathed out, looking down at the tiny piece of paper in her hand. Lo and behold it was a tiny drawing of Katie giving Delia a hug in thick blue ink.
Delia quickly wiped her tears away and beamed, throwing her arms around the little girl.
"Thank you, Katie, I will treasure it forever."
Katie beamed at these words and the hugged before furrowing her brow, her childlike bossy side taking over.
"N-No Grammy, you have to put it in now."
I smirked to myself as Delia just nodded and began to carefully blue tac the small piece of paper into her locket. Katie's gesture was innocent and childlike but it was that kind of thoughtfulness we needed in the adult world.
Now that her drawing was firmly in place, Katie was more than happy to hug tightly onto her grandmother. Delia sighed happily, stroking the back of her hair as she held the child close to her.
"Thank you, darling, thank you. I love you so much and am so proud to have you in my locket."
Katie beamed upon hearing this while Ben scowled and jumped down from his seat, coming over to join the scene. He pouted at his grandmother, his eyes wide with innocent betrayal. He ran a hand through his messy locks and stuck his bottom lip out.
"Aren't I special enough to be in your locket too?"
Delia smiled lovingly at her mini Ash and shook her head, tilting her head playfully on one side.
"No you aren't special enough to be in my locket…" she pretended to breathe out at the young boy before beaming and stopping her jokes. "Because you're special enough to be in my arms instead."
And with that, she tugged Ben into her arms and began pressing kisses all over his face. The little boy stuck his tongue out and tried to resist but soon enough gave up and was happy to be in his grandmother's arms. Delia sighed happily to herself as she held her grandbabies close, not wanting to ever let go those bundles of joy and purity.
I smiled happily to myself as I watched them, just feeling pure happiness for them all without wanting to join in the cuddle myself. Delia may not have been lucky in love and didn't have a long term partner but she was lucky enough to love so many people. She was a quirky and vivacious individual but she was so warm and kind and we all loved her just as sincerely back. The love she showed for her son and her family and all of us was apparent. And we truly need people like that in the world. After all, why love someone without showing them? Delia was the type to always show the love she felt. And I believe her example was what led Katie to do the kind gesture she did that day. Not forgetting, helping turn her into the woman she was going to become and the woman we all so deeply admired and loved.
The End.
There you go! Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I've been wanting to write about Delia's relationship with the twins for a while now and I'm glad to have finally done it. Last week I had this rare occurrence where I wrote about 4 or 5 fics in one week and this was one of them. I also wrote another one about Delia and Ash's dad which I'm excited to upload in the future. I have enjoyed establishing different characters :3 Thanks again and I will be back on Wednesday so see you then!
