Hello :P It is Wednesday and I am back with a new update. My brain's a bit of a fog at the moment with so many ideas and life stuff in general but I've managed to figure out all the chapters I'll be uploading this month. That's because all the stories in November will go along with the themes of PokeShipping Week on Tumblr, just like last year. And hopefully if I get round to it, all chapters in December will be Christmas/New Year based. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this weeks chapter. I wrote it at the beginning of September for when the kids went back to school. It focuses on James talking to Misty about his emotions of his son, Jayden, starting school for the first time :3
Ages:
Jayden: 4
James: 29
Misty: 22
Disclaimer: I own only the story :3
I nuzzled into the orange haired female's neck as she managed to hold a hot coffee cup in one hand and knock on the door with the other. She didn't look at me and she continued looking straight ahead, just waiting for it to open or for a sign she could open it. She didn't have to wait long as after the sound of papers scuffing and a slight quiet sigh, James' voice came from the other side.
"You can come in."
Misty didn't hesitate to unlock the door to her best friend's office and she quickly moved the coffee cup to her other hand before it burned the previous one too much. She must have been in slight pain but she didn't show it. She continued smiling but I could tell she was wondering how she would find the older male.
He took off his reading glasses and rubbed his eyes, giving her a smile before leaning back in his chair. His hand soon went to his hair to play with it absent mindedly.
"I thought you were Jess. I didn't know you were coming."
Misty didn't say anything but she just smiled and followed James as he gestured for her to join him on the sofa in his tattoo studio. Once they were seated, she studied his face for a moment before talking to him, remaining holding onto the coffee cup.
"Me and Ash are here with the twins to play. Katie isn't too happy playing without her Uncle James and boyfriend Jayden."
James' eyes had been somewhat not their usual light and vibrancy the entire time but he gave off a small chuckle. After that his hand went to stroke his chin and he sighed quietly to himself, nodding over to where his pink and purple haired son was drawing at his other desk.
"I'm surprised he hasn't heard that you're in here. He must really be in his own world…" James trailed off thoughtfully, his hand going back to run through his long locks.
I followed his gaze and looked into his eyes from the back of the sofa, trying to see if I could spot what was troubling the older man. He wasn't not being James but he wasn't quite being James either. I think there was a lot on his mind that he was doing his best to hide.
When I glanced back from James and over to my orange haired best friend, I saw she was looking right back at me. She was most likely thinking all of the things I was. Those two were very close. She could tell when something was troubling him.
Misty smiled gently at James and reached to play with her own bangs, finally answering the statement he had said a few minutes ago.
"I don't think he's the only one in their own world, James…" she looked at him softly, causing him to furrow his brow slightly and look at her in confusion.
"What do you mean…?" he mumbled, his green eyes doing their best to hide the meadow of thoughts growing in his brain.
Misty glanced at me briefly before handing James the coffee in his cup. Once he had accepted it, she tilted her head on one side and spoke to him in a gently and friendly way.
"I heard there was a quiet guy who needed his cup of coffee…" she smirked at him and continued looking at him, her fingers still sorting through her ginger locks. "I couldn't find one so you'll do."
James and I both laughed quietly to ourselves as Misty said to him a very similar thing that he normally said to her when he felt she needed a gentle talk. After Misty smirked happily that her joke had gone down well, she patted his shoulder lightly before sitting back in her seat.
"Jessie told me you're being really quiet today. Like more than normal. And I know when you're being very quiet, it's very dangerous. You're normally overthinking or worrying and we don't want that for you." She breathed out and rubbed her own leg as she spoke before looking at him with even more curiosity and concern. "So what's up?"
James just sighed quietly and put his coffee cup down on the coffee table in front of him. He was about to raise both his hands and deny what she was saying when Misty shot him a slight firm glance, shaking her head at him.
"Don't say you're fine. I can tell when there's stuff on your mind. So talk to me."
She spoke to him directly and firmly and that was the way to get him to talk. Otherwise he didn't want to be a bother to anybody and would bottle everything up. On the other hand, if you babied him too much, he would feel sorry for himself and whine quite a little bit. I was proud that Misty knew exactly how to handle her best friend.
James gave Misty a small smile and looked at Jayden before down at his lap. He opened his mouth to talk before closing it again, choosing it to shrug instead. When his eyes went back to Jayden once more, Misty slowly nodded her head. She had begun to realise and so had I.
She breathed out quietly and looked at James gently, running a hand through the back of her hair.
"You're not okay with him starting school, are you?"
James swallowed and did his best to shrug and hide it but the slight pain behind his green orbs was unmissable. He breathed out shakily, shaking his head at himself.
"It's stupid, isn't it? I've gone through this before. I've already done the first day of big school thing with Jazmyn and Justin. Why is it killing me this time? It doesn't make any sense. I've done this before. It's just so stupid."
When Misty noticed her best friend's orbs pricking with mild tears, she let out a sad and sympathetic noise, reaching forward to rest her hand carefully on his shoulder.
"James, don't get so worked up. You're allowed to feel however you feel and it certainly doesn't make you a bad father for getting more emotional over Jayden going than your other two. It could be many reasons why and you always taught me to not analyse and just focus on fixing it, rather than the reason behind the problem."
James smiled slightly at Misty reminding him of the lessons he taught her but he smiled more at her saying what he was fearing out loud and dismissing them and reassuring him that they weren't true at all. He swallowed and his smile soon faded as he watched Jayden drawing happily to himself, sticking his tongue out in concentration.
"I just don't want my little boy to go away. It's not like I'm worried about sharing him and letting him be taught things in life by other people because I'm fine with that. And I know he'll make so many friends and I'm so happy that he's going to have his own little life just for him. It's just all me. I'm selfish. I don't want my little boy gone."
When James gulped quietly and quickly wiped his eyes with his fingers, Misty looked right at him, her brow furrowed with concern but her eyes laced with sincerity.
"You are someone who couldn't be farther from being selfish. You just love your son, James. And you do so much together. I can't tell you how many times I've come to see either of you and he's just sitting in here with you and patiently drawing and coming up with his own ideas while you're busy with a client. He's a wonderful kid and you've done that. You and Jessie did that."
James shrugged modestly but his eyes lit up as he watched Jayden put one pencil down and reach for another, pausing to beam and nod his head happily at what he had drawn on the piece of paper in front of him. When Jayden went back to creating, his father sighed quietly again and ran a hand through his hair.
When the lavender haired male remained silent, Misty chose to speak in the hope of bringing some comfort to her clearly emotional best friend.
"You're allowed to feel whatever way you do, James. You have the right to be emotional right before your son starts school without questioning why. Maybe Jessie had all the emotion for the two of you with the twins. Maybe your mind was elsewhere a few years ago. Maybe Jayden really reminds you of yourself at that age and you didn't go to school so it feels wrong to send him there."
James listened to Misty but shook his head at the last part, running a hand through his hair and rubbing his forehead.
"No…" he shook his head but not in an unkind way, breathing out and looking at her. "No. I mean, maybe. I don't know. But I think he'll do really well at school. He's really smart and creative and kind to all kinds of people. He's going to be absolutely fine, I know it. It's his dad I'm worried about."
Misty smiled fondly at James finally admitting he wasn't quite okay but didn't make a big deal of it, pulling her legs underneath her and moving closer to him.
"I don't blame you. I would be a wreck in your position, I know it."
James nodded upon hearing this and he seemed to smile almost for real as he continued talking to his best friend about his wonderful son.
"You're definitely right about Jayden being a mini me though. I see it with Justin and Jayde too but Jayden is very similar to how I was. Well, how I would have been if my parents didn't oppress me so much."
When James sighed quietly to himself and rubbed his forehead, Misty stayed looking at him, both her ears and her eyes listening.
"People always seem to tell me they think Jayden looks up to me a lot and I don't know about that. I certainly look up to him. Having him around me when I'm working or just doing my thing is a blessing. He's my son and I love him like a friend too. He's just such a great kid. I don't know what I did to deserve him."
I swallowed the lump in my own throat as James gulped once again but this time let Misty see the tears that were gently filling his eyes. It was true that every parent thought their child was the best and what the hell, why not? You gave life to this little thing and you spend ages teaching them and making them laugh as little ones then they get a bit older, they educate you and fill your life with joy back. I knew in my heart each and every person in our group deserved to experience parenthood and deserved each and every one of their children. And all the love that they received from them.
Misty smiled at her best friend opening up, blinking past her own tears that were forming in her eyes.
"I know where you're coming from, I do. We love our kids so much. And you love Jayden and he obviously thinks the world of you. When he goes to school it's going to feel like you've lost an arm and a leg but then he'll come back to you and tell you all about his day. And you'll be filled with such pride. You deserve every single bit of being his dad, James."
James laughed shyly and sniffed upon hearing that, smiling and tucking a loose strand of hair behind his ear. After Misty glanced at Jayden before back at James sincerely, James glanced at his son before back at Misty.
"I don't know about that…" he mumbled shyly but quickly reached out and squeezed Misty's hand. Once she smiled and nodded her head to reaffirm her speech, she squeezed his hand back. They remained quiet for a few moments before James reached forward for his coffee cup. He held it in his hands and glanced down at it as he spoke.
"It's actually really crazy but when I first started getting all these emotional feelings and overwhelming thoughts, I really wanted to talk to your dad about it. I don't know why. I just thought he might have been able to help."
I watched as Misty was caught off guard at this and she swallowed, her eyes filling with slight tears. Soon enough she sniffed and nodded her head proudly, giving James a smile. Her proud smile turned mischievous for a second as she poked him.
"Oh so you wanted my dad but got me? That sounds about right."
After James laughed and went along with it, nodding his head and pocking her back, Misty laughed and went back to the subject at hand. She pulled her legs to her chest, resting her chin on her knees.
"I think he would understand. And he'd be very happy you thought about asking him. It's probably because you don't have your parents to go to for advice and you aren't your grandparent's son. He's the next person who would understand your feelings and you'd be okay with telling him the truth."
James nodded his head and smiled, taking a sip of his coffee before putting the cup down and talking to his best friend once again.
"Yeah, that's what I thought. Also maybe because everybody here always seems to come to me for advice while I only know what I know from making a mess of things and making mistakes. But when he's around, he's older than me and I have someone to turn to with more wisdom than I have. It's hard sometimes always being the one who has to fix everything. Especially times like now when I have to be strong for Jayden when I really don't feel strong at all."
The orange haired female smiled once again at her best friend opening up and nodded her head, her eyes going to watch Jayden as he began to tidy away his pencils. When she looked back, she continued nodding and reached to squeeze James' shoulder.
"You don't always have to be the one fixing everything. It's okay to be the one needing fixing. Jayden is absolutely fine so follow his lead. Only worry if he gives you reason to worry. He's cool so you can be too. But if you do break down or be sad in front of him; that is okay too. You really are a hero to him and I know he'll grow up admiring that his dad was always true to his feelings and taught him that emotion is good. It means you're living."
James smiled gratefully as Misty yet again gave him wise words. He smiled at her and reached to squeeze her hand, being unable to resist pressing a shy kiss to it.
"I'm not sure about me being a hero to him. He's definitely my hero." The lavender haired male glanced as his son hopped down from his chair before smiling at his best friend modestly. "I do agree with everything else though. Thank you, munchkin."
Misty just smiled and nodded her head before beaming when the green eyed little boy came to join them. She held her arms out to him and lifted him on her lap, giving him a quick cuddle.
"I thought you didn't know I was here, buddy. I thought you'd be surprised."
Jayden smiled at her and rested his cheek against hers briefly, nuzzling against her.
"I knew…" he mumbled and smiled before wriggling off her lap, making his way over to sit onto his father's lap instead.
When James just smirked and pretended to look smug that he had been chosen over Misty, Jayden beamed at his father and held out a drawing to him.
The lavender haired male noticed his son was giving him something and took hold of it, smiling lovingly at him.
"For me?" he asked before looking down at it, already pressing a kiss to his son's cheek.
Jayden nodded his head happily and swung his legs as he perched on his father's lap.
"Yup." He beamed before taking the drawing back so he could hold it himself and point to the important bits. "I drew you. You how you should be. Not sad about me going away. Cos I'm gonna come back."
Instead of looking disappointed that his son was aware that he was vaguely sad, James continued smiling lovingly at him, listening to him.
"Is that right…?" he mumbled, cuddling into him and ruffling his curly dual coloured locks with his hand.
Jayden beamed at the affection for his father and Misty and I just watched as he swung his legs more and nodded his head so his curls bounced.
"Yup." He responded quickly before giving the drawing back to his father, putting it on his chest so it was close to his heart. "Here you're playing your guitar cos it makes you smile. And you're my age not old. I'm going to draw something for you every day when I'm away and until I'm old and give it to you when I come back so you know I'm okay."
James smiled lovingly at his child's kind heart and wrapped his arms around him, holding him close.
"You don't have to do that, buddy."
"But I want to." Jayden was quick to respond and just as quick to return his father's hug. As he held onto him, the little boy smiled sincerely. "I promise I will."
James' eyes were filled with love at the conversation with his son and he tilted his head on one side playfully, poking him gently.
"You promise you will?"
Once again, Jayden nodded his head and was quick to respond.
"Yup. I promise. But only if you get this tattoooooooed." The little boy giggled to himself as he made an o shape with his mouth before pressing a kiss to his father's nose.
Once James grabbed hold of his son's face gently with one hand and pressed a kiss back to the same spot, he smiled and nodded his head.
"I promise."
And with that, father in son engaged in a tight hug with Misty's eyes lighting up with happiness for the pair. The loving display made her happy enough but she beamed even more when James mouthed a thank you to her and invited her to join in the warmth.
James was true to his word and he did get Jayden's drawing permanently on his body. Jayden did try to be true to his word but like in life, stuff happens and he grew up. He definitely did to his fair share of drawings for his father so it was all okay. What was important was the love and respect that they had for once and other. When he grew up and knew how torn James was about his first day of school, Jayden laughed. He laughed at his father and teased him but his eyes said something else. It was like he couldn't believe there was someone who loved him that much. The fact was there wasn't just one person. There were multiple.
Parents are the people who give you life so I think they have the right to be overemotional, over embarrassing and sometimes overbearing. The truth is they just care so much. I mean, why wouldn't they? The parents in our group are some of the best I've ever known and the children are just as wonderful. They gave their parents a reason and a purpose from the minute they found out about their existence. And that eternal bond wouldn't' break that easily. Not when they had their first tantrum. Not when they started school. Not when they got in their first relationship. Not even when they got married. The truth was that it never ever broke, not even once. And I was beyond lucky to learn the meaning of true unconditional love from all of these people. I never got the chance to have children myself but I didn't need to. My heart was filled with all these wonderful beings.
The End.
There you go! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I was a little concerned because this chapter was over 3000 words and recently I've been achieving writing that more often. I guess it's good but I don't want it to become boring. I think this chapter was fine, however, I didn't feel as though it was unnecessarily long :P Thanks again and I will be back again on Wednesday so see you then!
