Hello :P It is Wednesday and I am back with a new chapter. This one is one of my most recent ones that I have written. When I wrote the last chapter of The Diary of Baby Rey, I wanted to go into more details of how after Rey sent off her form to become a Pokemon Trainer, she began to struggle more with her powers. This chapter shows all that and it also shows the bond between her and her Uncle/God-Father, James. I hope you enjoy :3
Ages:
Rey: 10
James: 47
I continued staring at little Rey cross legged on the rug in front of the television in my bedroom, my vision doubling and becoming almost as fuzzy as hers potentially was. I couldn't tell. I couldn't see her eyes. They were guarded by a blue paisley head scarf being used as a blindfold.
Though my eyes were beginning to prick with dryness from not blinking, still, I continued watching her. I didn't want to look away. She had asked me not to. My parched eyes glanced between her covered eyes and her nose. I watched. Nothing happened. I could see that nothing had happened. And she could feel that nothing was happening.
Just as she gave up and let out a sigh as she ripped the headscarf off her face, a knock on the door of her bedroom could be heard. My eyes moved to look at the doorknob before it twisted and I had to blink. My orbs were so grateful that I did and lapped up each and every wink. The person on the other side of the door didn't have to knock again or say who they were. Rey knew.
Her head turned back to the TV and she ran a hand through her short hair, her voice, for once, speaking in an almost sighing tone.
"Yes, James?" she called softly before her Uncle entered the room, her blue orbs that were almost matching the blue of the scarf still fixed on the buttons of the television. It was strange that she didn't turn around to greet him, let alone get up to let him in. But I hoped it was just exhaustion from an afternoon trying to be productive with her mind.
Just like Rey knew it was, the lavender haired male entered her bedroom and shut the door quietly behind him. He gave me a friendly nod before giving his god-daughter an impressed smirk, coming to crouch down next to her.
"You have been doing that for years and years but I'm always impressed like it's the first time." He told her and gave her an affectionate gentle pat on the head. Normally she would have moved to her Uncle's side but deep inside, I knew her difficulties were getting to her. And James knew this too. He had raised her for more than a few weeks after her birth after all.
He didn't have to glance between her sat in front of the screen and her usual scarf in her hand to know what she had been trying to do. And judging by her quietness, he knew she hadn't been successful either. He smiled sympathetically at her.
"No luck, huh?"
The dark chestnut young girl shook her head slowly and rather forlornly, crossing her legs further on the floor while her Uncle kneeled next to her. But still, her eyes focused on the knobs next to the TV screen. She breathed out quietly before James' hand went to her shoulder to squeeze it.
"I'm sure it'll come back to you, sweetheart." He told her as sincerely as he could but she did something most unlike herself and she looked at him almost like a teenager. She raised an eyebrow at him, as if to tell him that he couldn't possibly guarantee. Instead of getting offended, James just chuckled fondly. "C'mon, if anyone can make it work again, you can."
After he ruffled her hair playfully, Rey decided that she couldn't pout at him a second time. She couldn't help but give him a small smile. She sure hoped he was right. And I did too. It was such a confusing time for the youngest Ketchum child.
I had been honoured when she came to me first to tell me that it was becoming almost impossible to write and do things with her mind like she used to. I listened attentively. I smiled emphatically at her. I was happy to lend an ear. But the truth was, I didn't really have any answers for her. So I suggested she told her father, the family member that she got her aura abilities from. He looked into it and privately asked around, but he came back clueless himself.
So he got his wife and Rey's Uncle James involved. James of course suggested trying to connect with Jordan or Lynne and asking them for advice. After all, her almost angelic powers came from them too. But because she was struggling to use her mind, she couldn't find them. They would have to wait until they came back down.
Rey remained quiet for quite a few minutes, her legs then pulled up to her chest and she rested her chin on her bony knees. She looked at her Uncle thoughtfully, finally shrugging her shoulders.
"I don't know." She told him before breathing out again, her own hand running through her hair. She scooted closer to him for comfort while I made myself comfy on her bed. Her brow furrowed. "I just can't put my finger on what has happened. It's like it was there. And now it's not."
James breathed out thoughtfully himself as he listened to his god-daughter and his head almost tilted on one side as he thought. But even he – a man who usually could come up with an answer for anything – didn't have one for her.
"Maybe you're just stressing about it too much." He told her before pushing his hair out of his eyes, moving closer to her himself when he could tell she needed comforting. He rubbed her back softly but for not too long. "Maybe it just happened once but you got worried about it and now that's what's making it harder for you."
I tilted my own head on one side. Rey blinked, but then she slowly nodded. She looked at her Uncle with those big ocean orbs of her that she got from her Nanny.
"I guess that kind of makes sense…" she mumbled thoughtfully, her head turning back to ask me for my opinion too. I gave her a shrug but then nodded my head along with James. I certainly thought it was plausible. And I was glad to see her shoulders straighten a fraction at comfort from both me and her Uncle. "Maybe I need a nice relaxing cuddle and then I'll try again."
My heart leapt at the idea but I almost fell to the ground with embarrassment when she leaned in to hug the lavender haired male instead. He didn't notice my excitement and then disappointment which made it even more annoying. Pikachu's give the best hugs!
But still, Rey seemed very content when her Uncle's arms happily wrapped around her and he pulled her close to his chest. As he rubbed her back lovingly, I forced myself to be happy that she was cheering up, rather than the fact that I wasn't the one doing it. After being the one she had turned to first, I was getting greedy!
After a few moments of a loving hug between god-daughter and god-father and after Rey had blown me a sweet kiss which I stubbornly accepted, she moved back to sit on her rug in front of her television.
James gave her a soft and intrigued smile as he crossed his own legs and his fingers rubbed his chin. He moved back to give her space before she even answered him.
"Do you want me to go and have a drink with your mom or are you fine with an audience?" he asked his niece curiously before adding. "Does it work the same with people watching?"
Rey was untying the knot in the headband with her fingers and getting ready to place it over her eyes but she smiled at her Uncle, appreciating his calmness and consideration. She shrugged almost airily for the first time that afternoon.
"I've had a few people watching me before and it didn't seem to make a difference. I imagine that you definitely won't." she told him with a shy smile before reaching to briefly squeeze his hand after he helped her tie it behind her head. She clarified sweetly. "We're friends."
Though I had been mildly annoyed before that he got the cuddles earlier and I didn't, I couldn't help but smile softly to myself when James' cheeks blushed upon hearing this and his eyes watched her lovingly while she focused on the TV screen.
He continued smiling as he pulled his legs to his chest. He had always been very fond of her. He liked all of the Ketchum children very much but especially the daughters. And especially Katie and Rey. Katie had clung to him since the day she was born and James had to look after Rey when she was first born. He thought of her as one of her own. And he especially liked that he could see a lot of Lynne in her and not just the eyes. It was the childlike innocence too. And he knew it would continue even though she was near being a pre-teen.
I overcame all petty jealousy and moved to hop onto James' lap for a better view of Rey as she began to try and use her powers once again. Behind her blindfold, she was squeezing her eyes tightly shut and her eyeballs were twitching with concentration. Her legs were folded firmly below her body and she was listening to the low buzz of the television to hopefully aid her powers.
I was one of the few people (or Pokémon) who had seen Rey performing her skills almost every week so I noticed changes in her body language as time passed while James just watched with fascination. I saw her body lean closer to the screen. I saw her legs unclench. I saw her fingers growing moist. But unlike her Uncle who was hopeful, I could tell that she wasn't getting anywhere.
He was watching his niece, his eyes full of fascination. I was watching my best friend's daughter, my brow furrowed as it didn't look good but I held my breath. I wanted to be hopeful. After a while, both our eyes glanced between her eyes covered by the blindfold and her nose. We waited for it to drip lightly with blood. That was usually a sign of success and that she needed to recharge of a heavy bout of power usage.
But aside from the things that I mentioned before, nothing changed. Nothing happened. And as James leaned closer to Rey and he held his breath while he bit her lip, she tugged the bandana off her head once again.
After she did so and like before, despite her Uncle's comforting, she looked at him with big and disappointed eyes. Her shoulders slumped.
"Oh, I really thought that you were going to be right. I really thought that that would work."
James blinked when the dark chestnut haired female gave up but he didn't hesitate to lean even closer to her to comfort her. He patted her arm soothingly while my paw patted her leg in her dungarees jeans.
"I really thought that it was going to work too." He told her truthfully, his head tilted as he wished he could properly comfort the pout off her face. He couldn't help but pout himself and he continued trying to reassure her though he was convinced she'd end up raising her eyebrow again like the first time. "Maybe you need a whole day of relaxing and cuddling rather than just a few minutes."
James was right. Though Rey was innocent and soft, she was ten years old. Her brow furrowed and she pouted even further at her Uncle. She almost folded her arms.
"I thought it was going to work." She said in a tone that was close to a whine and let out a sigh before dramatically flopping back on the rug behind her. James and I couldn't help but share a look. She got that side from her father.
But still, the lavender haired male persisted. I was forced off his lap when he even playfully hovered over her and made his hair tickle her face. She continued huffing at first and tried not too but she soon couldn't help but giggle. James smiled earnestly.
"We'll get that noggin' of yours back to peak performance, Rey." He told her lightly and reached to poke her nose with his finger before sitting back when she did. He spoke to her again after she crossed her legs. His green orbs almost glinted when he got another idea. "Maybe you need to shut off that TV and use a new device. Want to borrow my phone?"
This time after Rey tilted her head on one side, she looked at me for my opinion. I just tilted my head back at her, not saying anything right away. We both thought about it. The dark chestnut young girl loved that television more than anything, simply because it was a very old model. She was soothed by its static tones and treasured the antique.
She had never contemplated whether the television actually helped her brain project, other than the comforting noise that it created for her. After a few minutes of us both pondering, I gave her a casual shrug while she gratefully smiled at her Uncle.
Though it was a simple gesture, she was over the moon. It wasn't just that he was offering her the brief use of her phone - he was supporting her endeavours too. And in a time where she was confused and worried over them, she felt very loved.
She happily accepted the mobile phone from her Uncle James after giving him a loving hug. She leaned forward to hesitantly turn her television off and she leaned the phone up against it and faced that instead.
I hopped back onto James' lap after he resumed his position of being cross legged on the ground next to his god-daughter. She moved back to sitting on the rug and secured the blue head scarf over her eyes after James tied it for her.
This time before she focused on concentrating her brain, she did some deep breathing. She only used her nose. She breathed in through it lingeringly and she breathed out of it heavily. Her hands then went to her lap and the way her temples twitched, I could tell she was giving it all her might.
Once again, James watched, his eyes filled with fascination and his breath caught in his throat with hope for his god-daughter. He wanted her to succeed so badly so she could feel better about herself. If she saw even a flash, he knew it could make her more determined to work hard and get the results she wanted.
I almost nodded my head in agreement. I badly wanted her to succeed myself but I also agreed to some of the points she had expressed to me when she first opened up to me. Perhaps it was simply a 0-10 year old thing. Her case and her genetics were so complex that nobody knew. It was a massive mystery. But it was a mystery that she herself desperately wanted to solve.
This time, Rey went at it for longer. Though her eyes must have ached from behind the blind fold and her neck must have been stiff from being so up right, she persevered. She didn't make a sound. She imagined the phone.
That time, like James, I was too busy being full of hope and fascination that I didn't sense her next trick. It would have taken another gifted child to predict it!
Suddenly, Rey gasped. She didn't take her blind fold off and she stayed in the same concentrated position, but her fingers in her lap relaxed. She whispered.
"I can see…" she mumbled, trailing off vaguely before her eyebrows knotted from behind the scarf. Both James and I listened, on high alert. We didn't even have time to glance at once another. We waited. Rey continued. "Oh, my… A phone."
She was still saying sentences that didn't really mean much but they certainly got our attention even more. Rey continued a third time before James darted to fetch her mother out of fascination.
"I'm inside the phone. I can see…" she began, causing us to finally glance at each other but trailing off right when it was about to get exciting again. But she faked another gasp to hide her smirk as she recited sentences from messages that she was seeing. "'Oh, baby.' 'I can wait to see you.' 'It's been so long I can't handle it.' 'Please bring your ginger-"
And it was in that moment that James flushed, horrified over what he believed was happening. He quickly leaned forward to snatch his phone out from in front of her, almost squashing me as he doubled over with embarrassment. His eyes were wide.
"Oh my god, Rey, please don't read those messages. They're private!"
Perhaps it was true that often Pokémon and Trainer were alike. Maybe Ash and I were almost two of the same person because I didn't twig that they were that kind of personal messages until I saw James' blush. My own cheeks then blushed and I wanted to cover my ears while, despite everything, Rey giggled.
She continued giggling as she tugged the bandana off over her eyes. She shrugged disappointedly but she covered her mouth with her hand upon seeing how red her Uncle's face was.
"Oh, Uncle Jim, I was just making it up. I was seeing nothing." She informed him and upon hearing this, I burst into fits of giggles myself and hopped onto her lap. Despite her explanation, James didn't seem convinced or relaxed. She smiled innocently at him as she stroked my fur. "I swear it. I was just messing with you."
Once he heard a second reassurance, he couldn't help but believe her but despite this, he checked through his phone anyway. When he found no messages involving those phrases in his phone, he relaxed fully. He pretended to poke her in annoyance. He folded his arms over his chest.
"Jeez, you almost gave me a heart attack." He mumbled embarrassedly before giving her a relieved grin, his finger moving from poking her chest to poke her nose. He couldn't help but shrug fondly at her. "I am glad that despite everything, you're still a massive messer."
Rey giggled when he poked her nose a second time before she couldn't help but clamber onto his chest and wrap her arms around his red neck. But she soon went back to pouting as she nuzzled him. She breathed out.
"I couldn't help but wind you up. But I still am pretty bummed that it didn't truly work. I just don't know what to do next."
I moved closer to the dark chestnut haired young girl and nuzzled her lower back while she continued to cling onto her Uncle. The lavender haired male smiled sympathetically at her before kissing her forehead and stroking the back of her hair.
"I would let you continuously wind me up if it meant you got your powers back." He told her with a twinkle in his eye but sincerity on his mouth before tickling her hip playfully. He kept her close to him. "I don't know. Maybe it's because you're getting ready to go on your journey. Maybe you've spent so much time perfecting the skills in your head that you've forgotten to focus on the outside world too. But when you go on your journey, all you'll see is the outside world. So maybe it's natural that the powers might ease a little to get ready to process all the beautiful sights you're going to see."
For once, Rey seemed to be too pouty to truly appreciate his words but she nodded her head and listened. But I really listened. I couldn't help but smile. I always forgot that James technically went on a journey too with Jessie and Meowth. Though they weren't Pokémon Trainers and they didn't collect badges, they travelled across all kind of regions. They saw the same beautiful sights that our travelling group did. And that was one of the first things that connected us all.
After pressing another kiss to her head, James suddenly remembered something. His eyes softened as his fingers rooted around in his waistcoat pocket. This got Rey curious. Her ocean blue orbs widened and her head tilted towards the chinking sound that was being made as he rooted around.
After a few minutes of searching, he found it. The lavender haired male smiled almost shyly as he offered the special gift to the dark chestnut haired young girl. She looked inquisitively between the item he was holding and his eyes. He held it further out to her.
"Here, I was going to give you this right before you go on your journey but I think I'd like you to have it now. I found it a very long time ago." He informed her, holding it in his hands further under her nose so she could see it. It was a crystal attached to a black string necklace. His eyes didn't leave hers. "I want you to have it. It's an amethyst. I think it will help you on your journey. All of your journeys."
Rey's eyes stopped flickering curiously between the crystal and her Uncle's eyes and she licked her lips gratefully before finally accepting it. She cradled it in her small hands like the precious thing she knew it was. She breathed out.
"Oh, I've heard of these…" she met his eyes again as she informed him with a nod of her head, not hesitating to put it round her neck right away. This made James' mouth and eyes smile. "Different crystals heal in different ways. What does this one do? And where did you find it?"
After telling the young girl that it would help her communicate more on her journey, help her feel more balanced away from home and hopefully aid her with her psychic block, he told her about how he found it in his grandmother's garden when he was a very little boy. This made both their eyes light up even more. James remembered his special treasure and Rey understood the sentiment. She nodded her head as she made the gem touch her chest before touching his. She smiled at him.
"I think it will help me." She informed him sweetly, keeping it against his chest as her ocean blue orbs met his meadow green ones. She shrugged lovingly. "When I look at it, I'll think of you. It's kind of the same as your hair."
I chuckled to myself and James laughed lovingly as he watched the young girl in awe and gratitude of her new gift. He leaned to kiss her forehead and he brushed her hair from her eyes as his head remained close to hers while they cuddled.
"You're such a special little thing, you know that? I knew how special you'd be right from the day you were born and not just because you were a precious little baby. You have always seemed to wise and you've always been a great listener. I really hope you find the gem helps. You'll have me and it watching over you now."
As Rey listened to him, though she could understand the sentiment of his words and she beamed happily at him, she was still a child. She couldn't help but scurry off his lap and tug the curtains of her bedroom apart to hold the amethyst under the late afternoon winter sunshine. She held her breath as she watched it glow.
"Whoa…" she mumbled, grinning over at her Uncle and holding the string proudly around her neck. She bit her lip as her feet did a little dance. "Do you see how much it shines? I can't wait to take this with me. I can't wait for all of my journeys!"
Upon hearing this, as I hopped back onto Rey's bed, I couldn't help but get a little teary eyed. She was getting ready to embark on her Pokémon Journey but she still had life's journey ahead of her. And she had already had many journeys already and touched so many lives. You could tell this by the way James was looking at her as she bounced in front of the window.
"Yeah…" he mumbled quietly but sincerely, resting his head on his knees as he watched her, almost wanting to remember every detail about his god-daughter before she went into the big wide world. He smiled lovingly. "I see how it shines. And I've seen how you've shone since the day you were born. That's why I called you my Rey of Sunshine. That's what you'll forever be. Always."
The End.
There you go! Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 This one was a really fun one to write because I haven't written about Rey in the form of Pikachu Tales in a very very long time. Her character is also heavily based off Eleven from Stranger Things and you can see that a lot here. Though Rey wasn't tested on like Eleven, she has high aura abilities like Ash but unlike her father, she practices them. She also gets some angelic powers because Jordan and Lynne were on earth at the time she was made. I really want to write more about aura gifted people and the angel's and their powers in the future. Thanks again for reading and I will be back next Wednesday with another chapter so see you then!
