Hello :P It is Wednesday and I am back with a new chapter. I wrote this one back in November and I always thought it wasn't the best but reading over it, I'm happy with how it turned out. Back in November, James Bay who I based Jessie and James' son Justin after, cut his long hair off and ditched his hat. One of my first thoughts was what would happen if Justin did that too. Then I remembered that I always wanted to write a chapter where Katie gets James to give her chin length hair as she begins to overcome her stutter. So I combined the two and came up with this. I hope you enjoy!
Ages:
Katie: 14
James: 41
Misty: 34
Justin: 20
Disclaimer: I own only the story and the OCs!
I watched from the window sill as Katie took a deep but quiet breath and leaned closer to the mirror, her fingers running through her own ginger locks. Soon after doing that, her hand stopped and exited the tumble of fantastic coloured hair and she leaned back again. She let out another soft noise.
The lavender haired male smiled understandingly at her over from poking the scissors and combs and hair products she had lined up into size order minutes before. He didn't hesitate to walk across his large home dressing room to kneel next to where she was sitting. His arm wrapped around her. But for once, she didn't respond to his touch. She continued staring at the person in her reflection and both of their brows gently furrowed.
James was about to open his mouth and comfort his god daughter. He was going to tell her it would be okay. He was going to tell her she was in safe hands. He was going to assure her that this was a good thing to be doing. But he didn't have time.
Misty had been watching her daughter's actions from the door joining James and his wife's separate dressing rooms in the Morgan Mansion and they were causing the mother some worry. She gestured for her best friend to come over and talk to her. Like her daughter, her brow was furrowed. But Misty's was even more so.
For once, Katie didn't notice her Uncle move away from her and go to speak to her mother. He smiled sympathetically at the older orange haired female, his hands on his hips. Once again, he was about to speak but Misty interrupted him.
"Look how apprehensive she is." The ginger haired mother began, her own hands going to her hips and her eyes not leaving Katie, her orbs flickering every so often with worry. She breathed out. "Maybe she shouldn't be doing this. Maybe she's too young to decide to do this."
James understood the mother's worry for her first born daughter but he couldn't help but laugh quietly at her. He understood but his hands came off his hips to reassuringly go to her shoulders.
"She's fourteen, Munchkin." He shook his head fondly, smiling even more at seeing how openly concerned Misty was being. He adored how protective of a mother she was. "She's definitely old enough to decide to cut all of her hair off."
The lavender haired male was trying to reassure his best friend and his soothing tone certainly might've helped but his words didn't. Misty couldn't help but sniff but tried not to draw attention to it. She didn't want Katie getting more apprehensive by thinking her mom was being unsupportive.
"She's never cut more than a few inches off her hair at a time. She might be cutting the hair off that I grew."
Misty's cheeks blushed gently red when her eyes began to fill with slight tears at the thoughts but she was in safe hands. Although James chuckled, she knew he wasn't judging her. She wiped her eyes before they could get any wetter and when she met my gaze briefly, I smiled understandingly at her.
Katie was her first born daughter. Katie was her eldest baby. I understood her emotions. Though she hated the idea of it, that red headed teenager had caused her parents quite the fair amount of worry. Especially during the stage in which that she became so insecure in her stutter that she temporarily went mute. It was a heart-breaking time, watching your child who you loved and made with love hate a part of them that makes them themselves. But like her mother, Katie was strong. And like her father, Katie was resilient. She was coming through the other side of that difficulty and doing much better. She had come so far.
I stopped smiling at Misty and smiled to myself. Katie was definitely blossoming since her and Jayden started dating properly. He too had seen the change but insisted it was all down to her. It was mostly, but there was no doubt that he was incredibly supportive. He was definitely supportive too of her deciding to cut her hair off short for a new chapter in her life.
James interrupted my thoughts with more chuckles.
"Misty, Katie was born without virtually any hair. You grew everything but the locks on her head. That's all down to her."
Misty couldn't help but sniff all over again at the thought of little Katie as a newborn with a few ginger tufts and was emotion filled looking at her in the present, looking at herself in the mirror. James continued.
"And she's decided to do this all by herself. I know she wants to do this." He nodded his head encouragingly before giving his best friend a slight smirk as she began to pull herself together. He tilted his head on one side earnestly. "When have I ever decided to do something with Katie that's ended up with her being unhappy?"
The lavender haired male was about to utter the words "never" following his statement when Misty folded her arms, tilting her head on one side back. But she wasn't looking back at him earnestly. Her eyebrow was raised and she was looking at him to remind him of an occasion.
After James remembered the dreaded time he had let her watch a movie that was too of a high age rating for her and left her sobbing after she witnessed her favourite actor in the film get killed, he quickly decided to move on.
"Just stay here." He mumbled simply but not firmly before heading back over to Katie after he gave Misty a brief squeeze and gently pushed her back into the other adjoining room. "I can handle this."
I thought that once again, Katie wouldn't notice his presence like the few times before but, that time, she did. She looked up at her uncle with eyes asking for reassurance as her fingers played with each other.
"I think I want it cut short like how mom had when she was younger than me." She began and managed not to stutter before her eyes begged more for encouragement. "B…But do you think I'll look less p-pretty than her?"
I couldn't hear Misty sniffing from the other room at Katie's words but I imagined that she must have been filled with emotion. I agreed. She was calling her mother beautiful and at the same time doubting that she would be too. That was definitely ridiculous. Katie was a stunning teenager.
She had beautiful porcelain pale and clear skin. Her eyes shone and were a dazzling aquamarine. She had her father's smile when she beamed but when it was close-mouthed; it resembled Jordan's quite a bit. She was lovely. And aside from that, she was sweet and kind and passionate and honest. She was a real beauty inside and out.
I could tell that James inside felt a lump in his throat at her vulnerable gaze but he kept composed. He smiled softly at her and bent down to press a firm kiss to her forehead.
"You're going to be just as pretty as your mother. And you're going to be as pretty as you too."
Even though Katie was nervous about her upcoming endeavour, she couldn't help but perk up at her uncle's words. He had always had a way with her. He had always been so sincere and honest with her that she took a compliment from him. He was one of the rare few.
The lavender haired male was about to sit behind his god daughter on a different chair and talk about styles with her when a scuffling sound could be heard. We all turned around.
The scuffling turned into footsteps. The footsteps grew louder. The sound of a door to the next room opening could be heard. We heard a voice greet Misty with a "hi". Then suddenly in came a dark purple haired young adult with his guitar case over his shoulder.
"Morning." Justin greeted cheerily and leaned against the wall, his hand breaking away from securing his instrument over his chest to play with his hair that was tied back.
Now that James' attention was off her, Katie let out another quiet sigh and went back to looking at herself in the mirror and trying to imagine herself with short hair.
The older Morgan nodded a greeting to his son before he raised an eyebrow, taking a few steps towards him. He airily folded his arms over his chest.
"Yeah, it's not exactly morning, Justin. You're about three hours too late for that."
The younger Morgan's cheery face fell into a frown as he glanced at the clock but he soon shrugged, his face perking up again. He reached forward to lightly slap his father's chest in a greeting back.
"Well… Oh well." He began before breaking eye contact with James as he ducked his head to take his guitar case off his body. He shrugged again. "I guess I lost track of time. Oh well."
I couldn't help but smirk at his use of the same phrase over and over again and his jolly expression. His eyes were twinkling. His teeth were showing. His dimples were on display. And I couldn't help but smile. It was a lot different than the Justin a few years ago. And it was a great contrast to Katie's nervousness.
James continued raising his eyebrow at his son but airily. He was rarely mad for real at his children.
"Lost track of time? That's what someone says when they're a few hours late, not when they accidentally stay out all night."
I heard Misty breathe out quietly and couldn't help but feel she was glad her children weren't that grown up yet. James rolled his eyes but unfolded his arms, knowing his son was safe. He turned his back to him to go back to Katie.
Justin couldn't help but smirk mischievously at his father giving him the silent treatment that he didn't even pop them a message, knowing he was only joking and playing up to it himself.
"I'm the big 2 0, Dad." He began but before he could add anything else, James interrupted with his own smirk and a brief glance.
"Start acting like it then." He responded with a shrug, his fingers poking the products Katie had reorganised all over again before looking at his son. "You're still under my roof."
Upon hearing this, Justin nodded his head and hopped over his guitar case and grabbed hold of his father, giving him a tight squeeze and a kiss on the cheek. He waved at me too and his happy dimple was even more prominent up close.
"And I am so happy to be here." He said with a beam but his words were so subtly sarcastic that James couldn't help but laugh and Misty smirked too from the other room, I could tell.
James pretended to shove his son away after giving him a hug back.
"Go take a shower, boy. God only knows what you've been up to since you've been too busy to message your papa."
Before Justin could get side tracked with telling his dad about his night with his boyfriend and their guitar practice, he finally noticed that Katie was in the room also. I thought that nothing could break his cheery beam but he suddenly showed off a soft smile upon seeing her and the hair products and putting two and two together.
"Oh, is it time for the grand snip?" he asked casually, his long legs carrying him over to the window sill where I was and bending down to tickle under my chin. I sure appreciated it. Perhaps even more than his happy disposition.
Upon hearing the dark purple haired male's words, Katie's cheeks suddenly blushed gently. She was normally an outgoing child and only really insecure about her stutter. I didn't understand why she was embarrassed at first. That was, until she spoke and gave me an idea.
"I might not even get round to doing it…" she mumbled, looking away from her reflection when she saw her own red cheeks and looking down at her lap.
Justin continued rubbing my chin. James looked at Katie reassuringly. I smiled to myself. I understood. She was nervous about a lot of people knowing about her plans of chopping all of her hair off in case she ended up not doing it and looking like a fool. Of course she wouldn't but she was a teenager and I understood.
It was something she really wanted to do. It was a start to a new chapter and page she desperately wanted to be on. She'd be disappointed in herself if she didn't do it, let alone thinking other people would be let down too.
As soon as Katie's nervous energy could be felt by all who were paying attention to it, the sound of Misty clearing her throat could be heard. Though she didn't speak any words, James knew exactly what this meant.
Like his son, he was cheery. He was even happier and calmer seeing his son so bright and beaming that afternoon. His legs walked over to where Misty was and closed the door behind him. Before the door became shut, we heard his voice.
"I've been summoned." He mumbled playfully and that's all we heard before the door blocked the other noises out. I knew that Misty would be expressing her worries that Justin being there might cause Katie more apprehension. No offence to the young man, but she'd be a lot calmer if it was just her and James.
But before James could peek around the door and hint his son to leave, Justin moved away from me and sat next to Katie. His long legs draped over the chair. Like his father, he was a sensitive fellow and didn't need any words to be spoken to understand the feelings.
"You don't have to be nervous, Katie." He began in a way that was far from being patronising and, as he spoke, his fingers played with some strands of hair that were tumbling out of his loose bun. "It may seem like a big deal but once you do it, you'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner."
The orange haired female looked at the dark purple haired male somewhat uneasily but she gave him a polite smile. She wasn't used to expressing inner feelings to that particular Morgan and didn't know how to feel that he was being understanding. She hadn't told him a thing. But he was still in such a good mood. He continued airily.
"You're in safe hands with my dad too. You've been styling his hair for years so it'll be really nice that it's him returning the favour and doing this for you."
Upon hearing these particular words, Katie couldn't help but soften. She wholeheartedly agreed. That was the reason she wanted James to be there and her mom and nobody else. It was a big deal to her but at the same time; she didn't want people making it to be a big deal. She trusted James especially to do that. And luckily for her, Justin was naturally understanding that way too.
"Y… Yeah…" she began quietly, her fingers playing with her long ginger locks and still feeling slightly on edge at speaking to her boyfriend's brother instead of her boyfriend. But he was a Morgan. So on some level; she knew she could be honest. She shrugged. "I want to do it. I… I guess I'm just nervous now. In case I look weird or s-something."
Justin's brow furrowed upon hearing her words but he soon went back to smiling, his arms folding over his chest. He couldn't help but look at her sincerely.
"You're definitely not going to look weird, Katie. You'll still be pretty. Maybe prettier."
I knew Katie was an unusual child and I say that with all the love in my heart. Everybody in our group was unique, including her. But for some reason it confused me as to why it was these words that caused her to relax. Her eyes met Justin's curiously. They must have sparkled in a way that understood. He laughed and answered her before she could bluntly ask.
"I know what you're thinking. I know exactly what you're thinking." he told her with a chuckle and this caused Katie to blush but not in an uneasy way. I knew she didn't feel patronised. "That's funny." He continued laughing before smiling at her again, his own twinkle in his eye. "I'm not blind. And neither is my little brother. He is so smitten with you."
This caused Katie to blush in a completely different way and I giggled to myself from the window sill. If Justin hadn't broken the ice before, he definitely had at that moment. She loved nothing more than being reassured by other people of her boyfriend's affections for her and it happened a lot. But she was still grateful and beamed every single time. She appreciated it. And she appreciated it from Justin.
But before she could tell him that, her eyes met his curiously. She began slowly in case she stuttered but soon found herself at ease like she would be around Jayden or James.
"How did you do it?" she began before shaking her head at herself and clarifying when Justin looked back at her with questioning eyes. "Be true to yourself and s…stuff? I guess me cutting all my hair off is being true to myself. But… But it's hard."
After realising what the teenage girl was getting at, the young adult nodded his head. He leaned back in his chair and folded his arms over his chest but was fully engaged in conversation with her.
"Oh. Oh, it is hard." He continued nodding, looking at the ceiling briefly before back at her. She was taking glances at herself in the mirror. "But it gets easier when you realise that the people around you love you no matter what. Truly. And it feels easier to just go for it. Just do it. Even though it may be completely wrong or you might be wrong. There's a point where you have to just take a chance. And with you, you might like your hair at first but decide to grow it back after all. And that's okay. It's good to be true to yourself, even if it's only true to who you are and what you wanted at one point. Just rip off the band aid, as it were."
Katie found herself smiling when Justin used the exact same phrase that her Uncle James had said when she first told him she wanted a whole new do. Rip the band aid off. Hearing the words again from a different Morgan gave her courage. She picked the scissors up herself.
"I really want to." She mumbled truthfully but when she looked at the scissors and her reflection and imagined her doing it herself, she suddenly shuddered. She put them down. "I can't do it alone."
Justin smiled softly upon watching her. She was so close. She was so close to being her true self and he knew how that felt. He couldn't help but blurt out.
"I'll do it for you." He told her and despite her shock at the words and his own shock at his own words, he smiled sincerely. He nodded shyly. "I could do it for you. I know what I'm doing."
I blinked and Katie eyed the dark purple haired male unsurely. She knew he was creative and genuine and a chip off the Morgan block. But trust him to do her hair? She'd let Jayden right after James. But then she suddenly looked at him and saw.
His eyes sparkled just like Jayden and James'. He reminded her so much of them both. She almost gave in. But it was him who caved.
"Maybe not. It has to be perfect." He chuckled equally as shyly as her before squinting and running his fingers through his hair. All of a sudden he set his hair free from his bun and let it flow around his shoulders. He spoke again and shocked himself. "We'll do it together though. You can cut mine."
Katie blinked at his assertive behaviour but found herself reaching innocently out to stroke his locks, looking between the deep purple and the greenish teal of his eyes. It certainly wasn't her first time trimming someone's hair.
"You mean just take a little bit off?" she asked before becoming distracted by looking at Justin's hair for split ends. Her not looking at him made him brave. I was shocked.
"No, I want it all off. Like you, I want a change." He began in an almost shaky voice but he continued smiling and his eyes were certain. "Maybe I should have done it for the new chapter in my life. But there's no time like the present. Help me out, Katie. I'd like that."
The orange haired female normally didn't hesitate to help someone out or cut their hair. I thought she'd leap at the change to help someone out by cutting their hair! But it took a lot of convincing and I was certain James or Misty would walk in before it happened. But it didn't. And Katie finally agreed.
It didn't take long for them to spray his hair wet with the water spray. Katie expertly kept his hair in a middle parting and combed it through. She began chopping his locks. Daintily and slowly at first. But they both relaxed. And she got into it. Soon enough, he had a bob. And before I could even feel myself blink, his hair was cut short around his ears with long bits dangling at the front.
My mouth hung open. The truth was, I hadn't seen him with that short hair since he was about three years old. I didn't know how to feel about it. He certainly hadn't lost his charm or his handsomeness. But it was just so different.
Justin didn't even have time to look at himself in the mirror. Katie grinned at him while his fingers ran through his new and damp locks. The door suddenly opened and Misty and James came in. judging by the high pitched squeak, you'd think it'd have come from the female. But it came from James. He stopped in his tracks upon seeing his son's dark purple locks on the floor and the short remainder of the hair on his head.
Like me, he didn't know how to feel. He especially didn't know what to say. His mouth grew dry. His widened eyes just stared at his son. He opened his mouth to speak. But he just couldn't.
Misty was almost as shocked as her best friend upon seeing the dark purple haired male with a haircut shorter than she'd seen in over a decade. She knew that James was probably very emotional inside. But she couldn't help but jab him. With her words and her finger.
"Don't worry about it, Jimmy; he was born with virtually no hair so all the bits that are chopped off are bits he grew himself. He's old enough to decide."
She deserved a glare at his words being used back at him but he didn't. I was expecting the sensitive male to cry at his son's rash decision but he didn't. Instead he just moved forward, trying not to step on the tufts on the floor.
Justin still hadn't seen his new do in the mirror and it was suddenly dawning on him the impact that it may have on his parents after hearing Misty's words. He bit his lip. But like he said to Katie before, he was being honest to who he was and what he wanted in a certain moment. He hoped his dad would appreciate him being true to himself. And he really did.
It took James a while but he soon smiled after letting out a sigh. His hands went to cup his son's face before hugging him briefly.
"Out of all the bloody shocking things you've said and done, Justin, this is definitely top of the list." He mumbled before pulling away from the hug to look at his son. When he did, his eyes softened with love. And I suddenly remembered something.
That was his son. When he looked at him, he just saw his son and his son's face and his son's eyes. And in his son's eyes, he could see exactly who he was. And he adored that person. His hair was insignificant.
And out of all the encouraging words that Katie could have been told or Katie could've heard, it was this look in James' eyes that filled her with certainty. She took a deep breath and briefly squeezed her mother's hand before standing tall.
"What Justin did may be shocking but he's walked the path before me." She said without a single stutter before taking her seat in her chair again and handing her uncle the scissors. She looked in the reflection before nodding her head at herself and the people around her.
They were all looking at her reflection in the mirror but their love and their sincerity was exactly for her in the flesh.
Justin smiled at her and felt his own locks. He was surprised by his own spontaneity but he was softly thrilled that he had been such a help to his brother's girlfriend.
Misty was simply moved. She had watched her daughter struggle with her stutter. She had watched her become mute. She had watched everyone around her try and build her up. She had seen her nervousness when James hired her as a receptionist to get her talking again. She had listened to the stutter lessons between her best friend and her daughter. She had seen it all. And she was about to see her daughter's true self appear in front of her eyes.
James bent down to Katie's level. He didn't need to ask. The way Katie looked at him told him that she was deeply glad that it was him going to be cutting her hair. She wouldn't dream of having anyone else do it. He was her Uncle. Her God father. Her stutter teacher. Her movie goer buddy. Her supporter. Her friend. She was in safe hands. And she knew it.
Justin held onto Misty's hand as James held onto the first lock of hair which was a touching moment. But instead of feeling nervous, Katie grinned. And she beamed even more when James' scissors cut a chunk off with one snipping sound. Her eyes brightened. It had happened.
Katie had already arrived. A new version of herself that was proud of herself and how far she'd come. A version that was still sweet and passionate and honest and witty like her old self but a whole new version nonetheless. There were tears in my eyes. It was a touching moment. My heart thumped with love. I was honoured to be at both of her births. And beyond excited to join her on her new chapter.
The End.
There you go! Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I remember not being happy with this after I first wrote it, but it was really fun reading through it. I did like writing a happier Justin after coming out and getting himself a boyfriend. He's really really coming alive for me now. It also feels like a while since I've uploaded about Katie and I'm glad to be doing that again. I think she shows some traits of her Grandad Jordan here - especially how she's shy around Justin when she's known him her whole life! Thanks again for reading and I will be back again next Wednesday with another chapter so see you then :3
