The next morning came and went with neither Derek nor Penelope mentioning the night before. Penelope fixed the two of them breakfast before rushing out the door. Derek had been reminded by the director to stay away from the office until his suspension was lifted. He didn't like being sidelined; he didn't like it all.
Since he wasn't allowed to work, Derek headed to the house that he and Savannah had shared with their son. Her murder was still unsolved, but he needed get the house ready to list. Thirty minutes later he pulled into the driveway and killed the engine. A few minutes later he exhaled and headed toward the door. He hadn't been back since Savannah's funeral and as he opened the door he was hit with an overwhelming wave of guilt and the smell of bleach and lemon.
Derek stepped inside and closed the door behind him. The night that he had found her was supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. After almost a year of fighting with her, Derek was planning to end his marriage with Savannah. It wasn't a new discussion between them, but Savannah saw divorce as failure; they'd tried counseling, but it seemed to confirm what they both knew. He wondered what things would look like now had he ended things sooner. She didn't deserve to die; her killer was still out there free, and his former in-laws blamed him, and truth be told he blamed himself too.
Artemis parked across the street; he wasn't sure why he was here. He'd spent many nights here with Savannah when her husband was out of town; nights that were their secret and nights when he'd been unsuccessful in convincing her to leave and run away with him.
"Why do you stay? You don't belong here!"
"Art please! I'm not ready to give up on my marriage, we've talked about this!"
"I won't let another man raise my son! The fact that you gave him that name makes me sick to my stomach!"
"Art, what happened between us was a mistake! Do you know the damage, the lives that will be destroyed if..."
"I don't care!"
"But I care! Clara, your wife doesn't deserve to have her life turned upside down and my parents, they trust you!"
"Clara couldn't give me what I've always wanted! She knew before we married that she couldn't have children."
Art watched something change in her eyes and the guilt that followed prevented her from looking him in the eyes.
"What's going on, Savannah?"
"Art, I need to tell you something; it's about Hank."
Police Department – Afternoon –
Emily and Elle had convinced the locals that they'd found enough evidence to bring Artemis Marks' two henchmen in for questioning. Everyone agreed that it was imperative that the good lawyer not know that they were on to him.
Det. Baines was motivated by his sense of right and wrong or perhaps it was the fact that he couldn't take his eyes off Emily. Either way he seemed to have shifted teams and now was eager to prove Derek's innocence.
Elle paced back and forth in front of the two interrogation rooms while watching the lead detective question Elmer Stewart, an oversized, dim-witted man with a long history of violent crimes and who'd managed to support himself by doing "odd" jobs for men like Artemis Maker.
In the next room, Emily sat with another detective while Joseph Jackson sat squirming and playing innocent to the accusations against him. As soon as the offer of a deal was put on the table, the man began chirping like a parrot, spilling the beans and laying out his boss' plans in detail.
Home of Derek and Savannah Morgan –
Derek breathed a sigh of relief after ending a call with Penelope; The police had arrested Artemis Maker's goons and one had confirmed the attorney's role in Derek losing custody of his son and with another hearing set for tomorrow morning, he felt certain that his son would be back in his arms in less than twenty-four hours. Now more than ever he needed to be careful to keep his emotions under control.
Art watched Derek as he stepped outside, locking the door behind him. It would be so easy to run him down or better yet confront him with the truth about his late wife and the evenings they'd spent in the house together and then he'd watch the devastation in his eyes when he revealed that Hank was his son.
As much joy he imagined that scenario would bring, it would mean more to let the truth play out in court tomorrow morning. There needed to be an audience for himself and for anyone else who thought they could beat him. Art wanted what was his...he wanted a son!
"My son! You can't take it back Savannah, he's mine, he's mine, he's mine!"
The older man started the engine and as his nemesis backed out of the driveway, he ducked down so as not to be seen and when the coast was clear, he sped away back towards town.
Temporary Home of Derek Morgan –
Penelope had promised to pick up dinner after work and Derek was anxious to see her; to thank her for all she'd done. Emily and Elle were joining them, and he needed to thank them too. He never expected anyone to cross an ocean or to come out of hiding but Emily and Elle had done just that. Derek felt loved and because of that love he had to admit that he needed help; it was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do but in doing so he showed his true strength.
Penelope arrived first which was no surprise since Emily and Elle were wrapping things up at the precinct. Both Stewart and Jackson were booked and placed in cells with their boss none the wiser. Derek was anxious about tomorrow but for tonight all he wanted was to enjoy the company of three great friends.
The three friends spent the evening eating, laughing, drinking, and ignoring the fact that the battle to get Hank back wasn't quite over but for now it was time to rest and forget the demons that had chased them all into the daylight.
Derek had convinced Penelope to stay the night, happily offering his bed while he took the couch. He still didn't want to be there alone, and she eagerly agreed to stay if he needed her.
"I need to ask you something, Baby Girl."
"Anything, Suge."
"Is there something wrong with me?"
"What do you mean?"
"My wife was brutally murdered in our home, and I haven't cried. I just feel numb. I mean she didn't deserve that and whoever killed her is a monster, but I feel like I'm looking through a window at someone else's life."
"Come on Derek, you're one of the best profilers in the world. Everyone grieves in their own way. There's nothing wrong with you."
"It's just that Savannah and I were having so many problems and that night...the night I found her..."
"What is it, tell me."
"...that night I was going to ask her for a divorce."
Penelope gasped and immediately wished he hadn't heard her, but he did.
"See, there is something wrong with me."
"No that's not it! I didn't know it had gotten so bad. You never talked about your marriage not even to me."
"I didn't want to admit that I had failed; that I had chosen the wrong woman."
"What, the wrong woman?"
"Yes, the wrong woman."
"I don't understand, you've never mentioned anyone else."
"It's you Baby Girl. You're that woman."
