Chapter 56: Descent of the Great Serpent
"Wakey wakey, dear Laura." Carmilla whispered as Claire woke up from her slumber. Claire stared at Carmilla with… an ominous violet colored eyes, which made Carmilla noticed something was wrong despite her mental state.
"Laura…?" Carmilla muttered as her chest was stabbed by a blood spear.
"No. My name is Aurora." Said Claire… Aurora as she stood up and floats in the air while summoning more blood spears.
"Laura… it's me… Your sister…" Carmilla said with a sad expression without dodging the blood spears which pierced her torso on multiple places.
"I don't recall having a sister, let alone a vampiric one. You're one of Necromancer's minions, aren't you? Then you are my enemy." Aurora declared as she summoned a blood scythe, ready to decapitate Carmilla… only to be interrupted by claw attack from behind.
"Ugh!" Aurora grunted as she jumped away from Carmilla and the newcomer who attacked her from behind.
"You okay, Carmilla? Didn't expect you to just take that without… Carmilla?" Adra said as he noticed Carmilla crying while her body is pierced by many blood spears.
"Carmilla! Snap out of it!" Shouted Adra as he grabbed her shoulders and shook her body. She didn't respond and continued to cry.
"Well… This certainly makes me look like the bad guy. But…" Aurora muttered held out her left hand, where a magic symbol shined red as she summoned more blood spears.
"I'm used to being called a villain." She continued as she sent the blood spears after them both.
Adra destroyed every blood spears coming their way with his claws. He then jumped to attack Aurora but Aurora simply pushed him with a wave from her left palm. He was thrown out of the window.
"Laura… please stop… Don't oppose him!" begged Carmilla.
"Unfortunately I can't do that. His evil must be stopped." Aurora said as she brandished her scythe.
"Rest assured that everything will be alright." Said Aurora as she decapitated Carmilla.
Aurora, wearing Claire's face, looked upon the pitiful vampire with a blank expression before she went to the door intending to kill the beastkin only to find two people approaching the house.
*Clang Clang Clang*
Sounds of metal clashing against claws.
"Nice to meet you, Adra of the Seven Wraiths." Beta said as her blade clashed against the beastkin's claws.
"Likewise, Beta of the Seven Shades." Adra replied with a nonchalant smile.
"May I ask what are you doing here?" Asked Beta as she stopped her attacks.
"Oh you know. I noticed a colleague flying out here so hastily so I decided to go check her out. Didn't expect her to be attacked by her own prey though." Answered Adra, stopping his attacks as well.
"Is that so?"
"By the way…. Why are you and your friends smelled like garlic? Especially that old man?" Adra asked curiously.
"To repel your friend of course." Beta answered solemnly.
"Huh. Didn't know she hates garlic."
"May I ask why you're not taking this fight seriously?" Asked Beta while pretending to be frustrated at his nonchalant attitude.
"What can I say? This is just how I am." Adra replied calmly.
"Even as your friend's life is in peril?"
"Nah. She's gonna be fine. She's more durable than I am."
"If you're referring to her regeneration, it's useless. We know her weakness is her head."
"You think so? You're hella wrong. Carmilla is the most unique among master's undead minions to date."
"What do you mean!?" Exclaimed Beta as she suddenly heard an ominous roar coming from the direction of the old house.
"Oh dear. Looks like Lord Necromancer is mad. So mad that he has brought the big guns." Said Adra while slightly frowning.
"What do you mean!?" Asked Beta.
"See for yourself."
"Carmilla!" Shouted Mary as she ran to the ruined old house first with Van Helsing walking leisurely behind her.
"What!?" Exclaimed Mary, surprised at the sight in front of her.
"Ah. Reinforcements. You're a bit late though." Aurora, wearing Claire's face, said to Mary. Beneath her is Carmilla's head and behind her is Carmilla's headless body, which has been impaled by several blood spears.
"Miss Claire… Are you…?" Mary asked warily.
"Nope. I haven't become a vampire." Aurora answered nonchalantly.
"Then how did you create those blood spears?" Mary asked, still wary of the violet eyed girl.
"Blood manipulation is not the exclusive ability of vampires. In fact, I wielded it long before vampires even came to existence." Aurora said cryptically.
"What do you mean?" Asked Mary. It was at that moment that Van Helsing entered the room.
"Hm. Unfortunately my time is up. I hope we could talk a bit more later, Sha…" Said Aurora while looking at Van Helsing's direction before her violet eyes faded, replaced by Claire's red eyes.
"Where… am I…? Ughh…" Muttered Claire before losing consciousness and collapsing, though she was caught by Van Helsing's arms before she fell to the wooden floor.
"Mr. Van Helsing. Do you know what happened… to her?" Asked Mary as she turned to Van Helsing.
"She… has awakened a mysterious ancient power which has… completely resisted the vampiric blood within her. She is safe." Said Van Helsing cryptically.
"What kind of mysterious power?" Asked Mary.
Hell if I know. I just made that up! But I do know that the vampiric blood within her has vanished completely. I didn't know my sister is that amazing. Thought Van Hel—Cid.
"Only time will tell." He answered cryptically once again.
"I see." Mary muttered as she walked towards Carmilla's head.
"Carmilla… I couldn't blame you for doing what you did… But while I regret attacking you and your sister… I also had no other choice back then. Both of our choices… led us to-"
"Save your bullshit for someone who cares, you hypocrite! You are no better than I am! You also drank blood to survive! How else did you become stronger than I was!?"
"Huh!?"
The decapitated head, which is supposed to be dead, floated in the air, her expression full of rage and her face twisted grotesquely, her wide open mouth revealing many sharp teeth, like shark's teeth and her eyes completely blood red.
"How…? I thought your head is your weakness!"
"Her weakness is both the head and the heart." Said Van Helsing, referencing his knowledge of Dracula novel.
"What…!?" Said Mary as she looked at Carmilla's impaled body and noticed that none of the spears pierced her heart.
"Took you long enough to realize that! But I'm not going to let you do that to me again!" Said Carmilla as her body expelled all the blood spears and her head began reattaching to her body.
"Use this." Said Van Helsing as he threw one of his silver sword to Mary, who picked it up and inspected it.
"This is… silver sword? But I detect magic on it!" Muttered Mary.
"Graaahhh!" Carmilla screeched as she brandished razor sharp claws and began rushing at Mary.
"Ugh!" Mary, unable to react in time, had her torso slashed by the claws.
But before Carmilla could claw her again, Mary gave Carmilla's torso an uppercut with her silver sword.
"Graaaaaahhh!" Roared Carmilla in pain as her wound burns and are unable to regenerate.
"Such powerful weapon…!" Muttered Mary in awe of the sword's power.
"Curses! Curse that weapon!" Cried Carmilla as she began transforming, adopting more bestial form. Her arms extended unnaturally, her fingers and claws grew bigger, her ears became pointy and bigger and two large bat-like wings emerged from her back.
She was about to rush in and attack Van Helsing before she was stopped by a familiar and dreadful presence that suddenly appeared unannounced.
"What… this presence… Lord Necromancer!?" Exclaimed the monstrous Carmilla as she turned back and saw a dark portal appearing out of thin air.
"Necromancer!?" Mary exclaimed, alarmed by the amount of pressure his presence exudes even before he revealed himself.
"Hm…" He's coming. Now, do I reveal my identity as Shadow here and face my nemesis once again? Or…Thought Van He—Cid.
A robed figure wearing skull mask emerged from the dark portal and surveyed his surroundings. His attention went from the silver sword to Van Helsing himself. Van Helsing was sure his attention was on Claire, which is currently on his arms, instead of him though.
"Interesting." He murmured as the bat-like monster kneeled before him.
"Lord Necromancer! Have mercy! Please!" The monster begged him to spare her life.
"We are leaving." He declared.
"You think we'll let you escape just like that?" Taunted Van Helsing.
"Mr. Van Helsing!?" Exclaimed Mary.
"You insects are not worth my time. But if you want to taste true despair, then behold! The strongest of my Seven Wraiths!" Declared the Necromancer as he opens a large black portal, which exudes another terrifying aura.
"Wh-What!?" Exclaimed Mary as she and Van Helsing watched a gigantic beast emerged from the portal, destroying the roof of the old house with its size alone.
"It's… a dragon!?" Mary exclaimed, not believing what she's seeing.
"Oh?" Black Dragon!? Cool! I've always wanted to fight another dragon! But… Thought Cid as he looked at the unconscious form of his sister in his arms.
"Say hello to Nidhogg." Declared the Necromancer as the black dragon with red wings that emerged from the portal roared. On its neck is a huge metal collar with a red gem embedded on it.
"And now… say goodbye." Said Necromancer as he mentally commands the dragon to attack. The red gem on the dragon's collar glows and the dragon obeys its master's command and began charging its breath attack.
"This is bad! Run!" Shouted Mary as she began running, with Van Helsing following closely behind whilst carrying Claire in his arms.
"Mr. Van Helsing! Mary!" Beta called out as she ran towards both of them before stopping as she beheld the form of the black dragon.
"Run, Beta! That creature is beyond our capabilities!"
"It's too late to run." Said Van Helsing ominously.
"What!?" Exclaimed Beta before witnessing the dragon unleashing its breath attack towards them.
The world went white for the three of them.
Author's Note:
Surprise! Yes the strongest of the Seven Wraiths is here! It's the dragon Nidhogg! Nidhogg is a canon character from Master of Garden's Auxiliary Chapter: Truth Seekers.
