For a moment, she thought the world had slowed down as she heard the echoes of Hellboy's terrified screams. She fell backwards down toward the ground. The cold night air whipped past her.
Was this the moment? Was this her death?
She remembered when she was younger, and her father had been alive. She remembered thinking she'd die in the house she was trapped in. Never being able to really live. Maybe she wasn't supposed to die in that house. Maybe she was supposed to die now, falling through the sky.
But an image of Hellboy flashed through her mind. Of him holding her so tightly against him that she could've sworn she felt every pane of his body. His touch on her bare skin. The whisper of her name from his lips.
Then she screamed and the world sparked into action.
There was no fucking way she was going to die like this. To die without having told Hellboy she loved him. That she had fallen for him the moment he knocked on her door. When she had truly seen his face and knew he was the one who pulled her from the rain.
She rolled in the air as she struggled against the tight bonds. She could see the ground rapidly growing. She wasn't going to die now. She let out another scream. One so loud and hoarse that it almost tore blood from her. The ropes broke and her wings split out from her back.
It spread out and quickly she banked. Then flew up. Up she went, towards the roof of the bureau. She was pissed now. Angry because the man who had attacked her once, attacked her again. She ripped the fabric away from her mouth. She flew hard and reached the roof. Nobody noticed her appear.
While she had fallen through the air, Kit had approached Hellboy. He picked up the metal pipe. By the time she rose above the edge of the roof, he was getting ready to swing. She grew even more angry, and she dived for him.
With a hoarse yell, she hit Kit's back, and he flew forward, the pipe flying from his hand. Kit landed on his front surprised. He looked up from the ground and his eyes widened as Angel landed on the roof.
"You bitch," Kit snarled. He scrambled up from the ground, grabbed the pipe and stomped towards her.
Hellboy took the opportunity and stood up so quickly, it caught the other man by surprise. Before he could react, Hellboy lifted a leg and swung out. His foot landed on the man's chest, and he flew backwards. He crashed into the wall and fell unconscious, slumped onto the ground. Hellboy turned as he struggled to break the rope around his wrist. But he couldn't break it. He heard the sound of metal on concrete, and he looked up. Kit swung but missed as Angel sidestepped. Her wings helped her avoid his swings. The pipe clattered against the edge.
Hellboy made a split decision.
He ran towards Kit. His shoulder smashed into Kit's side, and they crashed through the edge of the roof. It broke into pieces as they flew through it and out into midair. Angel screamed as she watched Hellboy fall. She ran after him and jumped. Her wings spread out, catching air, then it folded against her body.
She was able to dive quicker that way. She kept her eye on Hellboy. She didn't care for the other man, who was screaming and flailing. She spread her arms out, hands reaching for Hellboy. Hellboy didn't notice her in the air as he struggled again to break his bindings. This time he was able to do it and the ropes flew from his wrists, broken. He looked over to the screaming man and reached out an arm. He grabbed Kit's arm and pulled him towards him, intending to throw a punch at him. Angry he hurt her.
But just as he grabbed onto Kit's arm, he felt Angel's arms slide under his. Her hands clasped against his chest and suddenly he was no longer falling. He stuttered to a stop in the air, Kit hanging from his stoned hand. He looked up and saw Angel's face close to his.
"Wha?"
Hellboy was shocked. He hadn't expected her to be able to do this. To fly down and grab him. To hold him up in the air as if he weighed nothing. Her wings flapped as she started to ascend. She lifted them through the air and back up to the roof. Once she crested over the edge, she let him go. She was exhausted.
Hellboy let Kit go and he crashed to the ground. He fell to his knees when she unlocked her hands from him. She let her wings go, sliding back into her body and she fell onto the concrete. She laid on her side, her back towards him. He scrambled over to her.
"Angel!"
He was terrified that maybe she was more hurt than he thought. She turned onto her back as he stopped by her side. He pulled her up into a hug. Arms wrapped around each other. Grateful that each was okay. She groaned at the squeeze, and he pulled back.
"Are you okay?" He asked, concerned as he cupped her cheek.
"I think he broke my rib," She replied. "But other than that, yeah. I'm okay."
He sighed almost in relief. He dipped his head so his forehead could touch hers. He almost wanted to cry in relief. "I'm so glad you're okay. I thought I'd lost you."
"I think for a moment, you almost did," She said. "I thought…I really thought I was gonna die. But…"
"What?" He asked as he pulled his head back to look at her. He saw tears brimming her eyes.
"I didn't want to die before telling you how much I loved you."
He froze. His heart thumped wildly in his chest, then he laughed. He kissed her lips hard, "God woman, you terrify me." He moved his hands into her hair and gripped it. "I love you. I should've told you that earlier but fuck…I fucking love you."
He pulled back from her with a grin. She smiled just as hard as he was. The sound of groaning caught their attention and they turned to see Kit attempting to get up from the ground. Hellboy's smile immediately turned into a growl. He helped Angel up from the ground. Once he was sure Angel could stand, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder. She wrapped her arm around his waist. Angel winced as they walked. They were both limping from the impact of landing on the concrete from mid-air.
They supported each other as they limped towards Kit. Hellboy grabbed the back of Kit's collar, and he jerked him. Kit let out a moan and his legs gave out. Hellboy lifted his arm from Angel and as he dragged Kit behind him, he went over to the other agent and grabbed his collar. She followed him as he dragged both men behind him. They stepped through the door and down the stairs. Hellboy didn't glance down at the men as they moaned from being thumped down the steps. He glanced at Angel, reassuring himself that she was still okay.
He had been scared out of his mind, terrified that he had lost her for good when she was pushed over the edge. In that split moment, he had regretted not telling her how he felt when he was holding her in his arms earlier. When they lied naked and joined. Just the thought of a future where there was no Angel terrified him. He had lost Liz. He wasn't going to lose Angel now.
They reached the elevator and Angel pressed the down button. The door opened and he stepped in, pulling the men behind him. Angel stepped in next, and she glanced at the numbers. She didn't know what floor to pick.
"1."
She turned at his voice. She nodded and pressed the number. They stood in silence as the carriage trekked downwards. Anytime the men made a noise, he'd growl and jerk them. They had made a mistake attacking them. The carriage shuddered to a stop and the doors opened. Angel stepped out, then Hellboy. Again, he led the way.
They ignored the glances and the shocked stares of the agents that stood in the hallway. None of them had expected to see a bloodied Hellboy limping through the elevator, dragging two agents behind. Sounds of murmured voices filled the air.
"Red!"
Hellboy flicked his eyes over to Abe when he heard his voice. Abe approached them quickly with concern on his face. Hellboy stopped in the middle of the hallway.
"What happened? Are you okay? Angel?" Abe rattled off his questions.
Hellboy jerked the two men, "These idiots thought it was a good idea to attack us." He lifted Kit, "This one thought it would be funny to throw us off the roof."
"They what?!"
Everyone looked towards the angered voice that echoed through the hallway. Manning had turned into the hallway just as Hellboy spoke. He became red in the face. He was angry. His eyes dropped to the men Hellboy held. Hellboy looked at Manning then down to the men. He tossed them towards him. They landed with a groan as Manning stopped.
Hellboy pointed to the men, "They tried to kill us."
Manning looked down at them. He hadn't expected Kit to already be at the bureau. Especially when he had been told Kit would be showing up the next day.
"He's lying," Kit groaned as he pulled himself up to his knees. "They-"
"I'd shut up if I were you," Manning tersely spoke as Hellboy growled. "You disobeyed a direct order and attacked her. Now you decide to use this opportunity to not only attack my one of my best agents but to try to kill him and Angel? You're fired. Both of you. Good luck getting your father to reinstate you."
Manning gestured to agents beside him, and they stepped forward to pick them up. They were led away. Manning looked at Hellboy.
"I'm sorry Red. Angel. This shouldn't have happened at all," Manning said as he looked at them. "Please get yourself tended to."
He turned around and left the hallway. He had some work to do now. He was pissed that his own agents attacked another. This wasn't how he ran things. Once he disappeared, Hellboy sighed and turned to Angel. They took a step towards each other and wrapped their arms around each other.
"Red, let me take you both to the infirmary and get you checked over," Abe spoke up.
Hellboy was already shaking his head before Abe finished.
"No. Not now. We need to be alone. We'll get checked out later," He replied. Off Abe's pointed stare, he spoke again. "I promise."
Abe sighed. He knew how Hellboy could be. He hadn't been there to witness it all. He didn't know how much they had suffered. He nodded, "I'm holding you to that promise."
Hellboy gave him a tired grin, "You got it Blue."
He gently pulled Angel and together they walked in the direction of his room, leaving Abe and the other agents staring at them.
