Chapter 2

A needle spiked on a handheld sensor device as the technician held it over to look at the hammer closer to see what it could be even more than what Agent Vincin had given prior.

Mjolnir gave a subtle glow.

Suddenly a bolt of lightning cracked across the sky above.

Everleigh looked up at the sky with her brows furrowed pursing her lips together. She turned her head moving towards a younger agent with a headset on looking at the monitors. She came over slowly seeing that Agent Sitwell didn't look too pleased with being there.

"Feed from the keyhole. Can barely penetrate the cloud cover." The techie hiked a thumb at another monitor, squelching with the static. "Tech's barely working as it is, with all the interference that thing's giving off." He gestured to the hammer and then checked the computer letting out a breath. "Hey, we've got a commercial aircraft coming in right over us, Southwest Airlines Flight 5434."

"Reroute it, like all the others." Agent Sitwell said, letting out a breath and shaking his head.

"Right. Can I get the passengers some free drinks for the trouble?"

Sitwell glared at him.

"You know the rules to that," Everleigh said, looking at the younger agent.

The young man let out a breath shaking his head lightly. "It'd be a nice gesture." He said before typing into the computer when he noticed something on another screen before holding up his hand. "Hold a sec... we got something outside the fence, west side…" He pointed to the screen.

Through the haze, it showed a thermal image huddled beside the fence.

Agent Sitwell picked up his radio. "DeLancey, Jackson - check it out."

Everleigh moved to go and check it out.

"Where are you going, Vincen?"

"I'm going to go and check it out," Everleigh said as she moved quickly away from them. She needed to know what that movement was outside of the base. She switched her com on so she could hear what was going on.

"Looks like we're good here. Must have been another coyote." Agent Jackson said into the com.

Another loud crack of lightning illuminated the area.

Everleigh moved towards where the hammer was. She could feel the air shift around her which concerned her.

"DeLancey, Jackson - report." Agent Sitwell's voice rang out over the com.

"Agents down! We've got a perimeter breach!"

Everleigh moved quickly towards where the hammer was. Her feet pounding against the ground as she passed many of the agents that were trying to get around to try to make sure that they weren't in the way of anything of other running agents.

Coulson emerged from the Shield command trailer and marched across the mud, with a radio to his ear. He looked out across the lit-up site uneasily. He saw Everleigh on the other side. He climbed to the lip of the crater to meet up with Everleigh as a light rain began to fall. He eyed the damage of the ATV crash. He didn't look too pleased.

The rain suddenly became a downpour.

Everleigh watched as agents pulled the ATV driver from the wreckage, and a man raced towards the unguarded entrance to the tunnels to head inside. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me. Damn it."

Coulson quickly activated his radio. "I want eyes up high. With a gun. Now!"

Everleigh quickly put her com on. "Barton, that means you," Everleigh called out to her mentor and friend knowing that he would be the quickest and he was the best shot out of them all at that moment when it came to firing in the rain.

Lightning cracked around the camp causing Everleigh to look up at the sky. Her brows furrowed, this was the oddest thing that had happened. She took a breath as she kept her com open to keep hearing what was going on with Clint.

Everleigh and Coulson watched the commotion in the tunnel complex.

Coulson turned on his heels to head for the command trailer to enter the tunnels.

Everleigh pursed her lips together as she watched moving slowly. She knew that they might need her just in case things went south and they didn't need Clint.

"Barton. Talk to me." Coulson's voice rang out over the radio.

"One shot, one kill, sir. Just give the word. Hello, handsome."

Everleigh let out a scoff, shaking her head. "No time to make flirty comments Barton."

Barton let out a soft laugh.

Everleigh turned her head to see Coulson hurrying through the tunnel to see he was about ready to give the word, but he stopped short. She went to move towards the crater.

The electrical storm erupted inside of the structure above the crater and the hammer.

Everleigh slowly made her way down into the crater being careful.

"Vincen, you be careful." Barton's voice rang out over the com.

"You know I will be." Everleigh said as she suddenly vanished from the line of sight.

"Damn it Vincen you know I hate it when you do that." Clint complained as he tried to keep his eyes glued onto what was going on down below.

"No you love it when I vanish." Everleigh mused softly letting out a small giggle.

Clint let out a scoff.

Everleigh watched Thor rip open the plastic wall of the structure and stand there, soaking wet, bleeding and caked with wet earth. Her brows furrowed as she watched what was going on as he walked towards the hammer. She turned her attention to the hammer and saw that it began to glow brighter, blue electricity sparkling off its surface.

Thor stood next to his hammer and felt its power rolling off of it. He reached out to it confidently.

Everleigh looked up and saw Coulson was watching from above, and he had agents behind him armed and at the ready.

"Barton…" Coulson's voice rang out over the com. "...hold your fire."

Everleigh turned her attention slowly to Thor who wrapped his hand around the hammer.

Thor smiled, triumphantly and lifted, but it didn't move. Thor looked confused, and tried again, with two hands, to no avail. Anger and frustration took over him. He strained with all his might, screaming from the effort, bellowing up at the storm and lightning above him. Thor noticed the runes that were on the side of Mjolnir, but it still doesn't move. He fell to his knees before it. The rain poured around him as the glowing faded.

Everleigh uncloaked herself and came forward, her hands glowing blue as she kept them pointed at Thor. She turned her head as fellow agents moved in with guns trained on him, surrounding him with her.

"Ground units, move in. Show's over."

Thor didn't notice or care that he was being surrounded by agents. He just remained on his knees bowed in the rain, a broken man, lost.

Everleigh held her hand up to keep them from firing as she moved closer to Thor. "On your feet." She ordered her voice cool in the crisp air.

Thor slowly raised his head to look up at her, his blond brows furrowed as he looked at the young woman that stood there.

"On your feet." She ordered again, narrowing her eyes a little as she looked at Thor.

Thor slowly got up to his feet seeing a spark of blue come from her hands. He didn't know who she was or what she was, but he wasn't about to fight her. He already lost himself in what had happened to him at that very moment. He had nothing else to live for at that moment. He lost his hammer and there was nothing that he could do to return home.

Everleigh looked at her team members. "A few of you should go check on the others. Check to see if they're alright and get medical treatment here if we need it."

"Yes, Agent Vincen." One of the agents said, bowing his head moving quickly.

She turned her attention to Thor before jerking her head for him to follow her. She didn't know who he was, but she wanted to find out who he was and what he was doing there. She wanted to get to the bottom of it so she could return home and relax some, but she knew that it meant that there was going to be tons of paperwork that was going to be dealing with this.
