Gohan was with his mom and her new girlfriend as they all went to Diagon Alley to gather the school supplies on his new list for his second year at Hogwarts. Lily was content to make goofy faces at Goten sending him into fits of giggles while Gohan carried everything behind them. "Oh wow," Narcissa said upon seeing the crowd for Flourish and Blotts.
"Gilderoy certainly has garnered a reputation for himself," Lily complimented his ability to draw a crowd at least. "Like that Hercule buffoon."
"At least Gilly is better to look at than that muggle man you showed me who took credit for what Gohan did," Narcissa said to be able to say she didn't only speak about Lockhart in a disparaging manner.
Gohan was edging his way into the store behind the two women before he bumped into a couple of his yearmates. "Hey guys," Gohan said as they turned to see who was addressing them.
"Oh hey Gohan," Harry greeted and motioned to the group of redheads with him. "You remember Ron, well this is his younger sister Ginny."
Ginny nodded her head demurely before moving behind her older brother. "She's a bit shy," Harry chuckled because Ginevra wasn't a very outgoing girl, likely because her older brothers are so in your face with everything. Hopefully being in Hogwarts would give her a chance to find herself.
"Not a problem, I was that way for a bit, it got beaten out of me, but I was," Gohan smiled at the girl before he snapped his head to the side. "Hello Mr. Malfoy," Gohan said as the man with his son came down the stairs.
"Child," Lucius sneered while keeping Draco close to him.
"Hey Draco, your mum is here if you want to see her," Gohan pointed through the crowd. "I'm sure she'd like that since she didn't get a chance on the platform."
Draco looked up to his father, hopeful that he would agree to it, because after everything in the manor with the Dark Lord, Draco was missing the comfort his mother could provide him. He was missing a lot of things and right now the most pressing issue was he was missing entire chunks of time, he was using the diary like he was ordered to but afterwards he'd feel like days went by without him being conscious of them. It was starting to scare him.
"My son doesn't need that wh-," Lucius started to growl out before Gohan cleared his throat.
"I'd be very careful which words you choose next. My mother did say I'm not to kill people in public but you aren't always in public are you Mr. Malfoy?" Gohan said as his eyes sparked with power letting him understand the threat being made.
"Go on Draco, you may have a few moments while I finalize your book list," Lucius snarled at Gohan for the warning that the little monster would come looking for him. "You think that power is enough, it merely caught me off guard the last time, that won't happen again."
"Oh believe me, next time I won't let you off with a warning, you'll join Cell and Frieza in Hell," Gohan promised the man because it seemed that a confrontation was inevitable. He watched Lucius walk through the crowd and Gohan said his goodbyes to his friends to catch up with his mother to see that Draco was hugging Narcissa as his body shook.
"And you can't even tell me because of what he's done," Narcissa sighed heavily as she looked at her son's arm.
Draco shook his head. "I'm sorry, I want to run away but I can't, he ordered me not to."
Narcissa held her son tighter to her body, she looked to Lily for support. "I need to find a way to remove this."
"I'll look into it," Lily promised as Draco had to let go of his mother to return to his father's side. Once she saw her son coming over she waved him to hurry up. "Gohan, keep an eye out for Draco this year, he's… not in a good place."
"Okay, I can do that," Gohan nodded since he figured that the kid was getting caught in the crossfire and being used as a pawn for the Dark Lord.
Because of how close things were getting to the start of the new school year, Gohan found himself busier than ever. His little brother was already starting to become more active which required more attention. His mom and Narcissa would sometimes go out for the evening leaving him in charge of the house.
All of this was cutting into his own training time but he also had to fit in Tonks who was not just eager to continue but she was over at his house practically everyday to do her own training. Teaching her to utilize her ki was the easy part, it was her clumsiness that he found was the biggest hurdle for the young lady when it came to martial arts.
Tonks was sitting on her rump in the grass having lost her balance once again while trying to follow along with the motions Gohan was showing her. Gohan came to a stop and went to sit down on the grass with her. "I just don't get it, why am I so clumsy?"
Gohan just stared at Tonks before his eyes picked up something, it looked like her skin was moving ever so slightly, he crawled over until his face was just about touching hers. He didn't see that her face was bright red from the close proximity they shared. "Are you morphed right now?" He asked while he reached out and gently stroked her cheek with the back of his palm.
Tonks had to scoot back and shake her head because she hadn't heard a thing Gohan had just said to her. "I'm sorry what?"
"I was asking if you were morphed. It just looks like your body is making really tiny shifts." Gohan clarified as he pointed to her face.
Looking down at her arms in the training gi, Tonks noticed that her skin if you looked close enough was stretching and contracting. "I guess I am, I normally shift in the morning and keep it that way for the rest of the day," commenting on what had just been a habit of hers for years. She'd been pretty stable with her looks for the most part in the last couple of years and honestly couldn't even remember why she always shifted herself daily.
"Well that might be the problem, I'm not a metamorph like you but that's got to be similar to flexing a muscle and if you're trying to do that while moving all the time then it's no wonder you lose your balance," Gohan figured as her body was doing its best to compensate and that she was walking around without issues most of the time was fine, but when things intersected during faster movement, that was when she'd have troubles. "Could you try this without any changes?"
Tonks nodded before letting go of her morphs that she had, she felt her hair flow down her back because she'd stopped getting haircuts years ago since she could just morph her hair into however she wanted, so it naturally just grew very long, like her mother she had silky black locks.
That had been the first change in his friend that Gohan noticed, and it seemed that the shifting started from the top down.
Her face changed from being less sharp to heart shaped, her lips which had been thin were fuller. Then her body started to change, where before she had a small sized chest to keep everything from moving as much, it expanded and stretched out the fabric of the gi that she had wrapped around her. Her hips started to bubble out and Gohan saw that her natural frame wasn't even remotely as tomboyish as she had kept it as and she looked much more like her mother now than before.
When it was all done and Tonks was no longer keeping parts of her body in the sizes that she thought were better she just stood up and took a few confident steps to test her balance. "Huh, so that's what I look like after all these years," Tonks hummed thoughtfully because she hadn't gone natural since puberty started for her. She took a few steps before leaping forward and pirouetting on the grass.
She liked how easy that had become for her to do since she wasn't focusing anything on how her body needed to look while doing something when she could just do it. Meanwhile Gohan was taking deep calming breaths. Tonks looked over to see that Gohan's gaze was locked onto her. Tilting her head in confusion before she looked down and saw that some parts of her body were threatening to spill out of the gi. She let out a shriek from seeing how close she came to exposing herself and covered her chest with her arms. That worked to snap Gohan out of his daze and he mentally chastised himself for his rude behavior.
"I'm so sorry Tonks," Gohan apologized immediately for staring at her like that.
Tonks just shrunk herself back down to even smaller than she had been before. "Now I remember why I was doing this. And it's not your fault."
The metamorph came over and sat down on the grass. "I guess once I started going through puberty I was worried about all the changes happening to my body. It's not a great time and well, boys started to notice that I was a metamorph, they didn't just see me as the little kid who was changing her face for a laugh or the girl with wacky hair anymore."
Leaning back on her elbows to look at some clouds Tonks sighed. "So I just made myself smaller because I didn't want people to think I was making myself bigger to steal their boyfriends, and then puberty hit me like a truck, so I got even more worried about what people would think."
"Well you are really pretty Tonks," Gohan admitted even if it was pretty obvious with how fixated he was on her.
"Thank you," Tonks reached over and ruffled the half-saiyan's hair. "It's just, I wanted to be taken seriously and not seen as some hussy joke. I mean what criminals are going to listen when 'Officer Bimbo' comes chasing after them. Or that the other aurors will think I only got in because Sirius is my cousin or that I… traded favors."
"Well I don't think you're a joke Tonks," Gohan shrugged in response. "I think you're doing an amazing job and even without training you'd be the best auror ever. And those criminals you go after are going to only think that for about three seconds before you bust their skulls."
"And if anyone ever thinks that you didn't earn your spot," Gohan frowned. "Then you show them just what you can really do. Come on, let it all out, we'll see how you handle the katas now."
It was a massive improvement even if Tonks had to stop for a moment to adjust the size of her gi with a spell to keep her chest from swaying so much. She followed the motions without a single problem. This made a dramatic difference in the speed at which they could train, even if Gohan had the problem that Tonks' much more mature body was all he could think about.
At dinner with everyone, Tonks had just finished her plate but Gohan knew she had put in much more energy so was probably still hungry. "Here, have some of mine," Gohan said as he passed over some of his mountain of food to her.
Meanwhile his mom's face was beaming a smile as she suppressed her joy at seeing what her son was doing. It was later as Gohan was walking Tonks home that Lily explained to Narcissa how important it was for a saiyan to share their food with someone else who wasn't their family.
Gohan politely clapped for each new student being sorted even if this year was more imbalanced than his own as only two people were sorted into Slytherin, with the most going to Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. It would seem that with the return of the Dark Lord many didn't want to be publicly in either house.
But beyond that Dumbledore's speech about unity and that Hogwarts was a safe place for all who wish to attend was probably the most neutral that could be done at this time.
Still, he was a year older and he was interested in seeing how his time at Hogwarts would go.
And right off the bat his first class with Lockhart was evident that his mother had been correct and he was going to learn very little from the egotistical man. The test was about weirdly superficial details of his books, nothing even remotely hinting at the spells he used. When he released the cornish pixies on the room it caused a panic. He was easily batting away anything the blue troublemakers could throw at him, which was annoying them but he doubted that Professor Lockhart was a sink or swim educator.
"Thanks for stopping them all Hermione," Gohan said to the witch who used the immobulus spell to freeze the pixies so they weren't causing any more destruction in the classroom. Now that they were out, Gohan was less frustrated because he had hoped that he would be able to learn something but that probably wasn't going to happen in this class.
Though without anything of import the days would go by slowly. Just simple students attending their daily lessons, but that meant it was more noticeable to Gohan that Draco was coming to classes looking more haggard and tired then the last time he'd seen him. Something was happening to him but until he had more information then it was likely that Draco would hide it because he was forced to do so to protect the Dark Lord.
The first two months fell away until it was Halloween night. For extra security over last year, Gohan had flown to do a couple of laps around the perimeter of the school just to be sure that no more trolls wandered into the castle. Seeing no signs of danger approaching, he felt it was safe enough to touch down on the lawn and attend the feast. This level of calm was starting to bother him though as he knew things rarely stayed that way for long.
Walking back up with the rest of the house the crowd of students had come to a hallway and Gohan could smell the blood already. Easily pushing through the other kids, he stepped up to a wall with a threatening message written on the stone. Gohan sighed because this had to have been done at the time that Draco had come to the feast later than others.
Getting the attention of his normal group in the house, Gohan pulled them aside. "Draco did this but he didn't want to do this, something is making him and I need you to help me keep an eye on him," giving them the instructions that he would then go to Daphne in the hopes that she would do so in the Slytherin dorms.
After that incident, tensions rose in the castle. The overt threat against the Heir of Slytherin was making more students worried that Hogwarts was not as safe if the Dark Lord was still able to exert some measure of control.
Daphne made a point to meet with him in the library to relay to him the information she had been able to gather. "I'm worried about Draco," Daphne said as she sat down with the group. "Ever since we've gotten back this year, Draco has retreated socially in the dorms. He rarely leaves his room anymore and it's always just to quickly go to classes. The last person to try to talk to him got snapped at before Draco looked like he wasn't even aware of how he got back to the dorm."
"Thanks Daphne," Gohan nodded as he figured that was likely to happen, either whatever influence was cutting Draco off from the outside which could help him or he was scared of what was changing in him and he was hiding out of fear.
"I don't know what you plan to do, but please, do it soon," Daphne requested because while she didn't particularly care for Draco Malfoy, given the circumstances she didn't want people to have to suffer needlessly, and she knew that Gohan was just the type of person to help others anyway.
While trying to figure out a way to get to the root of the problem with Draco, the new Quidditch season began for the school. It was just what the student body needed to help take their minds of the dread many of the muggleborn students were feeling with the Voldermort's threat looming over them.
But Gohan found that even the game wasn't going to be free of complications as he was focused on watching the players even if he'd been able to follow the snitch since it was released when he suddenly heard the announcer shouted in panic.
"Criminy, that's a rogue bludger," Lee Jordan warned once he noticed that a bludger had turned on a dime and made a beeline straight for the stands on the other end of the stadium.
Students scattered as the iron ball traveling at over a hundred and fifty miles per hour screamed through the air towards them. At those speeds, it would kill a human if it made contact. However it wasn't aiming for a human.
Gohan stood stock still with his arms folded across his chest as the ball approached him so slow that he was considering going and getting a snack while he waited for it to reach him. But it would only be a few seconds later that the ball slammed into his face and stopped dead, all the momentum it could muster was not enough to even make the half-saiyan flinch. It shuddered in the air before falling into the stands to reveal a flattened side from the impact. Gohan just lifted the ball and tossed it down onto the pitch without much of a care.
"Honestly, this might be why I was told not to play the sport," Gohan said to himself as he now understood why his mom warned him that he'd be incredibly bored if he hopped on a broom to play for whatever house team he was on. Everything had been so slow, enjoyable but he'd prefer if the game was played at the speeds he could go, which he also understood meant it would be unwatchable for anyone but him.
Word around the castle the next morning was that a student had been petrified, found in the halls turned to stone. A first-year muggle born to be precise.
This ratcheted up the tension in the school that had just started to cool, because since it had been a Gryffindor student that was attacked others were more convinced than ever that it was the Dark Lord picking them off.
The teachers in an effort to ease the worries reinstated a dueling club so that they had a method to train themselves and see that no one in the castle held any grudges.
And it would have been a brilliant plan if the club hadn't been co-opted by Lockhart to stroke his ego for the impressionable students. Gohan at this point was tuning out the man because frankly he had just been boasting. "Let me introduce my assistant, Professor Snape," the man said with a flourish to the other end of the dueling platform and it was painfully obvious to all the children that the potioneer did not want to do this.
"Never fear you'll still have your potion's professor when I'm through with him," Lockhart said as he drew his wand with a flourish.
"Hey Snape," Gohan called out and saw the man glance down at him. "I'm bored, kick his ass."
Snape smirked even as Gilderoy looked offended that someone wasn't praising him, "Now now Mr. Son," Gilderoy scolded. "I'll be forced to take five points for the language, no need for that."
Gohan just rolled his eyes as the two men squared off. As soon as the countdown by Lockhart finished, Snape had him quickly trussed up like a pig, complete with the apple lodged in his mouth. This resulted in all the students laughing at the man's situation and after Snape let him go, he was red in the face from the embarrassment.
Gilderoy was busy trying to save face in front of the students, when Severus suggested that the students learn to block the spells. Pairing them off after they had been taught to cast the protego spell, Gohan was trading spells back and forth lazily with Lavender Brown, his biggest issue was only putting a small fraction of his power into the spells. But that would be useful training as his full powered spells might as well have been beyond lethal even if they were nothing more than first year jinxes. It was when a cry of pain rang out that drew the attention of everyone to see Blaise Zabini writhing on the floor in a pool of blood while Draco stood with his wand held limply looking horrified at what happened.
Even though Snape was rushing through the crowd, Gohan was faster and was kneeling next to the Slytherin student. It probably didn't feel good to have your jaw forced open, but Gohan wasn't going to let some temporary pain stop him from shoving a senzu bean in the boy's mouth. "Chew and swallow, now," Gohan ordered as the boy just whimpered before complying.
A moment later Blaise gasped in shock before sitting up and felt around his body. "I'm… I'm healed," he said in disbelief that the severe wounds he had just been suffering from were undone so easily.
"Yeah, senzu beans are good for all injuries, but you should probably still get checked out," Gohan chuckled as Severus Snape had crouched next to them and was casting some spells to find out if there were any lingering effects from the curse his student had been subjected to. Turning his head, he caught sight of Draco pushing his way through the other students and running out of the room.
That was the last time anyone in the castle saw Draco Malfoy outside of the Slytherin dorms.
Author's Notes: Looking at a number of the reviews questioning Lily and Narcissa getting together, I figured that this comes down to how different a person Lily is to Chi-Chi. In DBZ Chi-Chi was content to wait at home after Goku died both times, seemingly just living a quiet life in the sleepy mountain home was enough for her, she didn't isolate herself but we never got any indication that Chi-Chi was doing anything other than raising her sons, even after the first year following Cell when it would see that this was pretty cut and dry that Goku wasn't coming back.
But Lily is a different person, she's a loving wife and mother but isn't simply going to sit around and wait for Goku when he said he wasn't going to come back. She knows her husband is a man of his word, she had no expectation that Goku would change his mind and she loves Goku, but she also knows to take care of herself and wanted to return to her home country to have more of a social life now that Gohan would be going to Hogwarts. That meant reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.
I didn't think it out of the ordinary that given the situation that Narcissa was in that Lily would be sympathetic and want to help the woman get over her past relationship. And it wasn't as if Lily was someone who inherently adhered to traditions, in canon she married a pureblood despite that drawing ire from others, in this she married an alien and had two alien babies with him, so the idea that she couldn't find it in her to spend time romantically with an earthling woman would be laughable.
It isn't as if there are more confusing relationships considering the Bulma was able to look past Vegeta's past to fall in love with him.
As for Goku coming back to see that Lily has moved on, that's pretty far down the road but I don't think it will be a point of conflict, Goku's an understand guy, after all he even tried to make friends with Frieza circa Tournament of Power.
