Chapter 3: Do Something

Ok kid, look at me. Just look at- ok you're not looking at me. Take a deep breath, kid. I need you to stand up. Just count to 3 and-

The groaning in the distance grows in volume, sounds of shuffling against the carpet become audible.

Count to 1 and get up. Ready? 1! … Ok, maybe a little more moving on your part. Let's try again! Oh, what am I doing? Come on kid, get up! You're about to be zombie chowder! Can you even hear me? Focus on my voice!

"Brains…"

The voice echoes from down the hall, with the sounds of groaning and shuffling rising in strength. Out of the corner of the eye, a white dress can be seen, coming closer.

Kid, please. Get up. I can't do anything, I can't…

Why can't I do anything?

All this time, stuck on a windowsill. Not even able to look outside. I can't even tell why I'm able to move now, and barely at that.

I've seen more than ever before, and all thanks to a naive child who was willing to trust me, and I… now their…

The zombie grabs the kid from behind, snapping them out of their daze, but it's much too late. They struggle and struggle, but a young child is helpless before the adult as they are pulled close. Their hoarse scream tears through the house as the zombie that used to be their mother. No, they scream, NOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo….

No.

I won't just stand back and let this happen. I'll do anything, something, anything.

The sunflower rocks back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, before finally landing upright. Fire burns in her eyes, and she lets that fire spread. And spread. Until it overtakes her, and she lights up the room in a brilliant gold glow.

The kid, still on his knees, snaps out of their daze (there's tears in their eyes, were they in pain?) and looks at her. The Zombie, dragging one foot behind itself and oh so close to reaching them, is blinded by the light. It stumbles over its own two feet, covering it's face with one arm, staggers past them, and continues to walk forward...

Straight to the basement stairs.

In a brilliant lack of stability, the zombie fails to catch itself entirely on the first step and tumbles down the stairs with a series of meaty bangs. All ending in a loud crashing sound. And then nothing. Suddenly, the house is quiet, and the sunflower…

For the sunflower, the fire dies all too fast, and the room is plunged into darkness. The last thing she sees before everything goes dark is the teary, wide-eyed stare of the young child.

Heh, I did something.
