My first Black Bird story, I had to delete my old ones as I hated how I wrote them.
I'm hoping to create more stories for the fandom in the future as I hate how few there are
Hope you enjoy
Misao would never believe this was really her life, when she was a little girl she never imagined this would be her future. She'd always felt like a freak, an outsider, a person who didn't belong, she had never met another child like her. Growing up with visions of seeing supernatural beings and demons, being haunted her whole life because of her genes, spending her whole childhood trying to remember Kyo only to learn his spiteful older brother repressed her memories. Separating the two in order to isolate Misao in hopes her affections would be directed towards him instead of his brother. But the spell went wrong, he didn't predict that there could be complications, causing her to forget Kyo but also forget Shou. But the repressed memories lingered beneath the surface in glimpses, Misao was tormented by a past she could never remember. She was hunted down by demons, the Kuzunoha clan of Kitsune whose leader tried to take her by force. He tried to destroy Kyo and manipulate Misao into becoming his possession to become the most powerful demon in existence. Using manipulation, shapeshifting and blackmail to make her his wife, only for his arm to be severed, threatened and then killed, for trying to force himself on Misao and kill the leader of the Tengu. But Kyo's devotion to Misao meant he would take every plausible action, even the unthinkable to protect her, making an enemy of the Kuzunoha clan. Kyo's childhood friend Tadanobu was forced to become the clan leader, fighting him for Misao despite their friendship. He didn't want to take Misao, he didn't want to claim her or force her to become his possession. He knew Misao was the love of Kyo's life, he had someone precious to him too. Involving his lover Renko, a woman who was willing to do anything to protect him.
Despite Tadanobu losing the fight, willing to die to protect them both, Misao refused, allowing him to live and instead forming an alliance between the two clans. She wouldn't tear Tadanobu from Renko, she wouldn't make an enemy of them both, she knew what it felt like to protect the person you loved to any extent. Through trial and tribulation they became lovers and eventually married, they gained the life that Misao and Kyo wished they had. A peaceful existence without enemies seeking to tear them apart. Renko was the only girl she had ever met like herself, though not a Senka maiden, she still had supernatural powers. The ability to see the same things as Misao, the same creatures, only she wasn't attacked by them. She learned to protect herself, she learned to educate herself on the beings she was seeing, she became a fearsome creature. Soon a bond formed between the two women, leaving Misao less isolated, Renko became like the older sister Misao never had as an only child. She helped her through every step of her journey. Leading to her birthing the eventual half breed Kitsune child of the pair, Soh and the Usui clan were yet to meet him. They were still on sensitive footing and many Tengu were still wary of other demons. Misao's parents now knew that Misao had married a demon, she was the bride of prophecy, their in laws and their grandson were demons and a half demon. All the stories Misao had told were true, her mother had seen Kyo's wings when he saved her from the fire. It made their love story all the more frightening and explained why Kyo lived the way he did, he was the clan leader among demons. But that didn't mean she loved her son any less, she had loved him from the moment they met and before he was even born. He was born of the love that Kyo and Misao felt for each other, every hardship and every danger and every enemy they made only made them stronger. Soh.
Kyo had become fiercely protective since her pregnancy, more so than he ever had before, he couldn't risk losing Misao again. He'd fought all kinds of enemies trying to protect Misao, making sure nobody would come between them. But then he was forced to make an impossible decision, either allow the pregnancy and Misao's demise, or abort the child and ensure her survival. His position as leader was being questioned, his whole responsibility was to impregnate Misao no questions asked. But he came into conflict with his clan, as they didn't harbour the same fondness for Misao as he did. Having been aware that the birth of his son would lead to the death of the woman he loved. But Misao shouldered the burden, as much as Kyo resented her for making the decision for the both of them. Misao having nearly been paralysed as a result, having to attend intense physical therapy to regain the use of her legs, to this day she was still shaky and struggled. She could never go back to the life she had before, she could never be the same person as she was before. But she never blamed her son, she merely considered it consequences to being a mother. She would rather relearn to walk than never have her son. Gaining a new perception on life and any future Senka maiden that would follow in her footsteps.
Misao cradled her son in her arms, he was now ten years old, still a toddler but full of emotions, full of energy but the spitting image of his father. She had so much to mentor him about, he needed so much guidance, full of emotions, curious of the world, eager to rebel. He resembled her greatly in appearance, minus his father's dark hair and bratty attitude. He was revered by the clan as the next leader, the one who would follow after and guide the clan into prosperity. Carrying both the powers of the Senka maiden and the Tengu, the most documented child in history. Until now not many had known what became of the Senka's of the past once they married their husbands and had children. Not many knew what became of her powers, not many knew of what happened to her. But perhaps they chose a quiet life after their own experiences surviving childbirth, what happened if they died at childbirth? Nobody knew for sure. But Misao wasn't naive to the changes that impacted her relationship with Kyo. He was already fiercely protective of her, nearly losing her had only worsened that. He didn't love his son the same way she did, he'd become fond of him but he'd still blamed him for nearly costing Misao her life. It wasn't until Soh was told the truth of his birth that he realised the emotions of his father, his trauma. However, sometimes Misao believed her husband resented her son, for stealing her attention away from him, for being the reason she had to relearn to walk and the fact that she nearly died.
Kyo had lost his own mother very young after she poisoned herself out of guilt. He was the closest to her and loved her dearly, his father disappeared after her death causing him to become the prime suspect. Kyo had been raised by his strict and traditional grandfather, while also living alongside his sociopathic older brother whom was expected to become leader. Due to this, it formed a strong sense of distrust in Kyo, an independence from his clan, causing him to fight his own battles. The only ones he trusted or who remained loyal to him were the DaiTengu. After reuniting with Misao despite her memory loss, he was insistent on her remembering him, protecting her from other demons. Hoping she would realise how much he loved her.
"Mama, why are you so sad?" Soh asked innocently, breaking the silence. He could see the distant look in her eyes, like something was making her unhappy. There were many things his mother never spoke about, many sad memories that she carried in her heart. He'd overheard stories from the Daitengu about his mother's past. Because of her powers, his mother had a very lonely childhood, and it had put her in a lot of danger.
Misao blinked, realising her silence was causing her son distress "Sorry, mama is just tired, sometimes my head gets a bit foggy" she apologised. There were many things she would tell him when he got older, about her powers, about his uncle Sho, about the trials and tribulations herself and Kyo had faced. But for now she just wanted him to have a happy childhood. About Shouhei the ex leader of the Kitsune clan who became obsessed with her, willing to kill Kyo just to force her to become his bride. Of the many other demons who tried to come between them.
Son shifted, until he was informed of his birth, what happened to his mother before he was born, he had never understood why she was so slow, why her father was so protective. He didn't understand what made him so special as the next clan leader, aside from how strong his father was. He had responsibility to follow, he had a future and expectations weighed upon him. After Hoki told him the truth, after Hoki explained to him the full story, he was kinder on his mother, teased her less and cautious around his father. He hated to make his father angry and he hated to hurt his mother or cause her pain, he loved them both dearly. "Did... I do something wrong?" he asked.
Misao stared at him in awe, she hated that ever since he learned the truth, her son now believed that he was partially responsible for her moods. She knew that Kyo had issues controlling his anger and emotions, due to his own trauma and abandonment issues. He was selfish and immature, he wanted her all to himself. But she would never hold back on keeping him accountable for his actions, trying to ensure he was a better father than his own. Her expression hardened, she had settled into her role as clan leaders wife, showing maturity and wisdom not expected of her. Carrying the burdens that Kyo shouldn't have to alone "Did papa say something mean to you?" she asked. Soh shook his head, he just didn't want her to be in pain. Misao squeezed her son affectionately "You could never do anything wrong Soh, you're mama's little angel" she teased, kissing his face affectionately.
Soh softened, clinging to his mother tightly, her soft sweet smell radiating from her. He was told this was the scent of the Senka maiden, due to him carrying her blood and some of her powers, he too carried a similar scent. The scent of a Tengu mixed with that of a Senka, making him alluring and terrifying to all demons and humans alike. However, he knew how much his parents loved one another, their devotion and loyalty, the bond they shared. However, he never knew what led to their marriage and relationship. His mother had a life before she came to reside in their village permanently. "How did you and papa meet?" he questioned, he'd heard some of the older Tengu call him "Lord kyo's precious lady", or "Lady Misao" or "The Senka maiden". The way his father looked at his mother with such adoration, how protective he was of her, it made him wonder.
Misao blushed, it was a strange and very dangerous story but it was theirs. Her romance with Kyo was unique, many other girls her age had normal and mundane lives she could only dream of. She would never attend college, she would never become a working adult. She would never have a career, she would never earn her own money. She would help advise Kyo, raise her son, and help lead the Usui clan. She had sacrificed her old life the moment she met Kyo, but then as a Senka she would never have that option. But she was happy with Kyo, she could live by his side by the person who adored her more than anything. She was protected, she earned her own independence and strength, she was revered. She would become a legacy to future Senka who would follow after. She hummed, stroking her son's hair as she reflected upon her life, so much time had passed since then and yet she wouldn't change it for the world. She'd been such a lonely little girl until she met Kyo, he changed her life. "Well, when mama was a little girl, she didn't have any friends, nobody believed me that I could see demons or ghosts" she reflected.
Soh looked at her suspiciously, if she had known his father since she was a child, did that mean he was always mean? He could imagine her bullied by him somehow, that he would say something mean to her. His mother never spoke about her childhood, about her memories, she kept them private "Was papa scary back then too?" Soh asked.
Misao chuckled, Kyo had matured immensely since back then, though he still sulked and had his moments of immaturity. He had settled into becoming a father, realising he had more than one person he had to protect. Soh wasn't just half of him, he was half of Misao too, he was born of both of them. No demon would ever take away the happiness he had found, no person would ever come between them again. "No, papa was a lot nicer back then, he wasn't as mean to mama as he is now" she teased.
"Did you fall in love with him back then too?" Soh asked
Misao nodded, sometimes she reminisced about the cute little boy he had once been. Compared to the pervert he had become as he got older "Papa was your mama's first love, but...he had a big brother who was in love with mama too" she reflected. She had loved Kyo ever since she was young, but due to the amnesia she had forgotten all about it.
Soh wanted Misao for himself, but he never wanted the position of clan leader for that, he never cared for the expectations of his family. Knowing Soh never wanted her to marry him, he would have never impregnated her and he never would have risked losing her. He would have spirited her away, he would have cloaked them both so nobody would have ever found them. He would have lived in peace with her, all while making sure she survived. Abandoning the clan for the sake of Misao's affections, putting her first no matter what the consequences. He was resurrected but he made peace with himself and Misao before he passed away, he apologised for all the ways he hurt her, for all the ways he harmed and scared her. Possessed with wanting her love and adoration.
"Papa had a brother?" Soh gasped, was that why he was so childish? Knowing his father was the youngest sibling made so much sense.
Misao hummed, she often wondered how Sho would have acted knowing that Misao was impregnated but survived. That she birthed Kyo's child and beat the Senka curse. Sho was favoured greatly during his childhood as becoming the next heir, despite his sociopathic tendencies and cruel nature. He deeply respected and loved his mother, but resented his family. The only thing he ever cared for was Misao, above all else. How he showed his affections was cruel, like a child that didn't want anyone else to have their toy. He had manipulative tendencies. But then he and Kyo were seen as pawns from childhood, fighting for who would become heir. Kyo was underestimated and Sho was prioritised, as soon as Kyo became clan leader, the spotlight Sho knew was ripped from him. If Sho had lived, watching the girl he loved find happiness with his brother, seeing his nephew, the spitting image of herself and Kyo, living with that reality. It would have eaten him away inside. "I'll tell you about your uncle Shou someday... but when you are older. Don't tell papa, he'll get upset" she soothed.
Soh nodded obediently, he could tell there was something painful about that memory, the way her eyes glazed over. He had heard of his uncle, the hidden whisperers, he was scorned among the clan but nobody ever spoke of him. But his mother and father remembered him, they even had a memorial formed for him to visit. His expression became curious with a hint of shyness "Mama?" he asked.
"Hmm?" she questioned, Soh was at a very inquisitive and curious age, rebellious and discovering himself. He was known for getting into trouble, but he was always a good boy for his mother. The one person who could make him behave was her, people were impressed by how he acted around her compared to Kyo. He had a thirst for life, he wanted to understand everything around him, she just hoped he mellowed out eventually.
"Will... will I ever get a sibling?" he asked, sometimes he got lonely without anyone to play with and papa always got his mother attention more. He liked to play with the village children, some even from the orphanage. But he never had anyone to play with at home, he was expected to study all the time. Maybe with a little sibling, he would have company, he could have someone to play with. He knew asking such a thing would make his father angry, knowing what his mother lost in order to have him.
Misao blushed, she had considered having another child someday but Kyo would probably he adamantly opposed. As the clan leaders wife she was expected to reproduce heirs to carry the lineage, to help the clan prosper for future generations. They had never planned her first pregnancy, it had happened completely by accident, only after her sudden changes had she realised. They had been overjoyed, preparing themselves and freaking the hell out, keeping it a secret until she was ready to tell people. Kyo reading all sorts of parenting books and marriage magazines. He wanted to make her happy, knowing she would be a teen mother and she was sacrificing so many opportunities by having his baby. But as soon as he learned the pregnancy would kill her, that it would be a fatality. Knowing that bearing a demons child would come at a sacrifice to her. Kyo wanted to abort, he tried everything to get rid of the baby, even with the DaiTengu turning against him. He was willing to use Shirohebi poison, he was willing to use any means to preserve Misao's life at the cost of his unborn child's life. So Misao decided to have the baby, even at the risk of her life, rebelling against Kyo and accepting her fate. She never told her parents this, that the pregnancy would kill her. The DaiTengu researched all means of preserving Misao's life, into protecting her and ensuring the safety of herself and the baby. Through hell and back Misao survived a near death experience but Kyo was never the same. It took a long time for Kyo to love his son, to accept him, to accept their future. Just the idea of Misao going through that again would make him turn in an instant.
But Soh shouldn't be denied siblings due to the fact they had rushed into this blindly. They were better prepared now, they knew what to expect and how to prepare. The more children they had the stronger the clan would become. "Maybe..." Misao soothed, she would love to have another baby. A little girl who would resemble her father, but with her strawberry blonde hair and her Kyo's red eyes. She could imagine the expression on Sagami's face at the idea of Kyo having a daughter, as a girl dad himself. She would certainly be popular with the boys in the village.
As she laid Soh down for his afternoon nap, Misao sighed wearily, glad to finally have some peace. Her son was so energetic but his company could often be draining, focusing all of her time and energy on one small person. She needed time to rest and recharge, before she burned out. However, due to no longer being a student she had more time to spend with him and focus on him. She was glad she could ask her mother for help when needed.
"Are you well Lady Misao?" Sagami questioned curiously, if she was struggling, they would happily take over for a period. She needn't push herself unnecessarily. As the last remaining DaiTengu and vassals to lord Kyo, they would focus on the mentoring of his son. She had sacrificed greatly in order to gain the life she had, to bear her son's life. If she needed to rest there was no shame in taking a break.
Misao smiled wearily, while when she was younger Sagami had appeared patronising and often intimidating. As she had matured and become older, she had come to realise the depth of his loyalty. A wise older figure whom she could seek guidance with, like an older brother she never had. He was very perceptive and always helpful whenever she had a problem."Yes, I suppose I'm just adjusting to how rambunctious and curious Soh is becoming" she mumbled.
Sagami shook his head, the saying like father like son had never been more apparent than it was with Lord Kyo and Lord Soh. They were so very alike and the entire clan was aware of this. Misao handled her son greatly, with patience, understanding and kindness, but at times his brattiness was unfair to her. Under her guidance he would become a future clan leader that others would greatly respect. "He's very much like his father Milady, but I hope he will mellow out to reflect yourself as he matures" he soothed.
Misao blushed, she knew Sagami would always keep a secret and he was one of the few who remained loyal as a DaiTengu after the birth of her son. She had never seen herself as a mother, but then she was a different person now, she loved her family dearly. Sagami had birthed three girls through Ayame, all of which had his blonde hair but resembled their mothers. No doubt they may follow his footsteps and become DaiTengu someday or merely vassals. Sagami had always been one to respect privacy, confidentiality and never shared secrets without consent. If she could confide in anyone, it would be him. "Sagami, can I... I'd like to confide something to you" she pressed.
Sagami's expression became serious, it was rare that Misao showed genuine forms of anxiety like this "Of course Lady Misao".
Misao sighed, shifting and folding her arms, part of her worried that Kyo could be overhearing this. But she needed to get this off her chest, even if he wasn't involved. Soh would keep asking regardless and she couldn't ignore the subject. Many members of the clan, including Kyo's ailing grandfather expected her to bear more children. "Soh, earlier he asked me... something innocent but, I knew if I said something to Kyo he would freak out" she wavered.
Sagami nodded, there were reasons why Misao kept secrets from her husband, due to his intense emotions and reactions. She was scared to hurt him, scared of how he would react. Every fibre of her being as Senka wanted his approval, his love, his solace. She was scared of driving him away, of no longer being wanted. "Lord Kyo has always treasured you, he put you above all duties as clan leader" Sagami reminded her.
Misao hesitated, remembering the trials and tribulations of her pregnancy, of how sombre it was. How everyone acted normal but were all aware that her looming fate was growing closer and closer. Everyone focused on research and trying to preserve her life. Zenki quit to become the next head of the orphanage, caring for abandoned or orphaned children. Buzen hadn't cared who would become clan leader, he was loyal to whatever cause suited him best, he would probably become a vassal of her son. The triplets were now vassals to her son also, trained personally by Lord Kyo, they were as strong as the older DaiTengu had been. "When I... after I was impregnated with Soh, Kyo was overjoyed to be a father, but as soon as he learned the consequences of a Senka being impregnated. He was willing to abort our son by any means necessary" she reflected.
Due to his wife's longstanding health conditions before she was given Lady Misao's blood, Sagami had always been hesitant to bear children with her. Years later after her health improved and Misao had survived her own pregnancy. Ayame gave him a son and a daughter, both of which he was deeply protective of. Though Ayame had handled the pregnancy well due to her improvements, the fear of losing her had been as real as Lord Kyo had felt. "Indeed, though we understood his devotion to you, we couldn't risk the backlash of what would happen if you didn't procure an heir" Sagami agreed.
Misao shifted, running a hand through her hair in frustration and trying to focus her words, she wasn't a teenager anymore, she was now in her late twenties and her son was now ten years old. Thinking of how naive and young she had been when she was reunited with Kyo, as a teenager what she was forced into. How much trauma she endured and what she was forced to overcome. She'd had to get therapy, in order to heal from many of her past wounds. As a Senka she was never privileged to a normal life, she would never know any form of peace. The girl she had been and the woman she was now, were two very different people. She was an adult, not an adolescent. "I never saw myself ever becoming a mother, I was a student in high school, and still adapting to my new role as a Senka maiden. I just wanted to have a future, that's all I wanted" she pressed.
Sagami said nothing, merely listening intently, he was one of the few DaiTengu to recognise how young Misao was. He didn't overlook her immaturity, what she was giving up. Girls her age were enjoying their youth, their teenage memories and nostalgia. While Misao was trying to avoid demons plaguing her, just trying to make it through the day. She was forced to mature while adapting to the trauma, because she had no other choice.
"But Soh is now ten years old, he's unlike any of the children in the village, he's the only half breed child. His powers are unlike any child born here" she continued. She couldn't imagine how isolating that had to feel, how lonely he was. She herself had been ostracised as a child and she didn't want her son to endure the same. He had the blood of a human in him, he wasn't a pureblood like the rest of the clan.
"There have been no documented cases of children of the Senka, he is a rarity. But keeping documents of him will help future generations" Sagami admitted.
"Soh gets lonely and often times understandably jealous of his father. But... today he asked me... about siblings" she mumbled. She tried to provide him with her undivided attention, giving him as much of her time, energy and love as she could afford. Making sure he was doted on and cared for, so he never felt unwanted. But he hated competing for her attention with his father, he hated feeling like he was his father's rival.
Sagami stared at her, shock and surprise forming on his face, though lord Soh showed no implications of inheriting his father's perverse streak. Every child became curious of how children were made, how babies were created, innocent questions. Even his own daughter had asked him on occasions and he had responded with informed and cryptic words. Educating them but also hiding them from the intimacies of adult relationships. He could understand why Misao would be hesitant about such things, how she needed to carefully word her explanation.
When you meet a person you love, you want to make a family
Sometimes two people create a life together and that life occasionally involves children
He could see the anxiety in Misao's eyes, how she was going to explain this to her son without being cruel. He had done nothing wrong and had merely asked a question. But he was unaware of the trauma Misao had endured just to bear one child. Above all else she wasn't the only one with this decision, she wasn't the only person with expectations and responsibilities. "Does Lord Kyo know about this?" he asked, ever since the birth of their son, he had matured somewhat and settled into the role well. But he was terrified of the premise of losing her to another child. Kyo had been intent on aborting his son by any means necessary, willing to go against his vassals. The further Misao developed in her pregnancy, the more worried he became. He was still traumatised by the event and he rarely spoke of it.
She shook her head solemnly, as much as she loved her husband she just couldn't tell him.
"Milady, I do believe this is a heart to heart you must share with Lord Kyo, however, if you require me as a third party to speak upon areas in which you aren't comfortable. I will assist" he reassured her. She never had to feel like she was alone, that she had to bear the weight of it by herself. As her brother in law, he deeply cared for her and carried responsibility. She was as much family to him as Lord Kyo was. Acting as mediator was something he could handle and had previously handled before.
Misao nodded, somehow Sagami had read her mind and had eased the stress that bothered her. He was very diplomatic and handled such situations like this with ease, speaking the words she couldn't say. He was better at handling her husband's outbursts. He would be able to express her desire for another child without disrespecting her or angering her husband "Thank you Sagami".
Kyo folded his arms solemnly, he knew something was bothering Misao and she'd been fidgety all afternoon. She always became reflective and reserved when she was worried, hiding it badly and only making him worry deeper about what was wrong. She hated being a bother to anyone regardless of how severe or mundane the issue was. After he had meetings and duties as clan leader all afternoon, he finally had some time alone with his wife. She'd just put Soh down for naptime and she made sure he wasn't disturbed. "You're anxious this evening? It couldn't be your feeling frisky? You can just ask me to ravage you" Kyo teased. After birthing their son, her sexuality had blossomed, she was exuding sexuality and radiance. She had matured greatly since her teens, into a seductive and charming woman he was proud to call his wife.
Misao blushed, even after becoming a father Kyo had become impatient and filthier minded, his lustful needs skyrocketing. She had half a mind to dump ice into his robes to cool him off and teach him a lesson. However, it was merely one of his personality traits she had come to accept. She had become empowered by her own sexuality and charm, often catching him off guard and embarrassing him. She simply approached and knelt nearby him calmly, aware that this situation could go very wrong. "I want to speak to you about something, Soh asked me a question earlier, but I spoke to Sagami about a second opinion" she explained.
Kyo raised an eyebrow, due to the close sisterly bond she shared with Ayame, Sagami had also come to care for Misao greatly. Whenever he had to be away for any reason, he trusted them both to protect his wife. For her to have a private conversation with him of all people, it had to be serious. He knew there were subjects Misao could never share with him, as much as he hated it he had accepted it "And what did Sagami say?" he questioned.
"He said I needed to have a serious conversation with you" she confessed, as husband and wife, as the clan leaders wife. There were just some things they needed to speak about, no matter how unpleasant. Kyo nodded, he could tell Misao was being serious, her eyes hardened and her expression authoritative, she had truly become a clan leaders wife, commanding his attention. He wouldn't admit it aloud but he found it unbelievably sexy how well she had slipped into the role.
Misao shifted, taking a deep breath before staring Kyo in the eyes, gripping her hands into balled fists. She couldn't turn back now or Kyo would merely worry "Soh, he's asking questions about... babies" she pressed.
Kyo blinked before smirking, she was asking him about their son being curious of the birds and the bees? He was asking questions about sexuality? In what way was that worrying at all? He was merely curious of his parent's relationship and the adults around him. He knew Misao was no prude but she had worried far too much on this subject. He couldn't stop the grin on his face getting bigger and bigger, barely able to look Misao in the eye due to amusement. "He wants to know where babies come from?" he stifled a laugh.
Misao frowned, Kyo was taking this better than she expected he would, but mostly because he didn't fully comprehend what she was saying. This wasn't just about her son being curious of adult relationships and sexuality. This was about her son wishing for more siblings. He wanted to know when his mother would have another child, when his mother would give him a playmate. Though she would never hesitate to have another child, nothing would make her happier, this wasn't just her decision anymore. "He wants... siblings" she pressed.
Kyo went quiet, his laugh silenced, his expression warped into fear and hints of anger, she could smell the fear, anxiety and anger forming within him. The memories of nearly losing her with their firstborn. He was reliving every moment, from her conception to the moment of her childbirth. Remembering how helpless he felt. Thinking of the child within his wife's womb that would inevitably kill her. Now Misao was seriously considering putting him through that again, to risk more than just the loss of her legs. "You... want another baby?" he forced out in disbelief, rage and bitterness forming on his face "After what happened the first time? Nearly costing you your life?!" he spat.
In the past Misao would have trembled, apologised and closed in on herself, not anymore. She could hold her own against Kyo, she was older, wiser, mature, she had experience. Kyo couldn't use his authority against her constantly, she had her own ranking and influence in the village. Misao glared "I don't regret having our son, we never knew what to expect. We both ran into this blind! At least this time we can be more prepared! So long as the baby senses you aren't a threat and you don't mean to harm them we will be fine. If I have to, I can have a C section" she insisted. She would never regret the life she had created, she would never regret bringing Soh into the world, born of her love for Kyo. He was a unique child that no human would ever consider. But at least now they knew how to handle a pregnancy such as this, they knew what to do. Her body would remember.
Kyo winced, resting his face in his hands, growling in frustration. Deep down he knew Misao was speaking sense, that she was correct, but his heart didn't want to accept that. He had come to love his son, giving him the attention and patience his own parents never gave him. But the cost of nearly losing Misao wasn't something he could easily move past. The village would support them both in a heartbeat no questions asked. Neither of them knew that having a baby would be this risky, that Misao would be put through hell and back. Misao above all was willing to put herself at risk to ensure the wellbeing of her child, regardless of the consequences. Misao loved this baby before he was even born, she never blamed Soh for her condition. "I nearly lost you Misao, he's a reminder of that. He may not realise it, he may not understand the weight of that. But he nearly cost you your life, your existence" Kyo reminded her.
Misao softened "I can't imagine that kind of fear Kyo, but then I nearly lost you before. So many people have tried to kill you too. I would die for you, the same way you would die for me. But our son isn't responsible for that" she reminded him. She remembered all the times she had been close to death, imprisoned, kidnapped and put through hell. All she could think about was returning to the safety of Kyo's embrace. Thinking of all the times someone tried to take Kyo from her, the fear, heartache and anxiety it installed in her. But the love she felt for her son was different, the bond they shared was different.
Kyo softened, he knew she was right, Soh was blameless to what happened, he never asked to be born. His own mother had a weak condition and yet had birthed himself and Sho without any consequences. Ayame had multiple health conditions before she drank Misao's blood. But she had managed to birth Sagami's children and lived a normal life. Misao was no different, just the scenario's. "I'm still learning that, I'm still reminding myself. What was the supposed to be the happiest day of our life, became the worst for mine" he whispered.
Misao approached, cupping Kyo's face fondly, pressing her forehead to his "I know". She would never disregard the pain Kyo had endured, the trauma and the heartache. He'd lost every living member of his family aside from Ayame. His mother, his father and his brother. But she wasn't going anywhere, she wasn't going to leave him.
"I mean, sadly I was raised as a daddy's girl and always will be. Soh is a mama's boy, so..." Misao smiled, though he adored Soh due to stating that his grandson resembled his daughter, Misao would always be his baby girl. She had always been doted on by her father. Misao had a strong bond with her mother, though more relaxed and trusting than her father, was the matriarch of the family and knew when to become strict. Soh was undoubtedly a mama's boy, aware of which parent was his favourite. However, should she have a daughter, she was painfully aware of the fact her daughter would be attached to him by the hip.
Kyo raised an eyebrow, she was already imagining their unborn daughter? He wondered how quickly she had become broody without him knowing? I mean the local village children adored her. However, how she had managed to contemplate their child's personality and make such an assumption caught him off guard. "You think our hypothetical daughter would be a daddy's girl?" he laughed. What if she ended up like Soh? What if she was a mama's girl and ended up protecting Misao from his bullying and teasing? Then he would have two children against him.
Sagami listened quietly, he had to agree that despite greatly resembling lord Kyo, their son Soh had his mother's cherubic heart shaped face and round eyes. Without a doubt, their future daughter would resemble Lady Misao with her strawberry blonde hair, possibly her brown eyes though more likely demonic red. Possessing her father's stricter personally, though more likely her mother's immaturity "Most definitely" Sagami agreed.
Misao grinned, she had to admit teasing Kyo about their unborn future daughter was rather amusing, being able to discuss such things comfortably. His own mother had birthed sons, and due to her passing they never had any future children. Imagining Kyo with a daughter or even sisters amused her greatly. She would have him wrapped around her finger without question "She would have your eyes, as red as blood" Misao laughed. Much like any demonic child, she would possess a supernatural beauty that would draw people towards her. Just as she had fallen for Kyo, as human women were to the DaiTengu. Just as Soh would as he got older.
"She may also have your brown eyes milady" Sagami reminded her, just as lord Soh would become handsome as he got older, their potential daughter would blossom into a lovely young lady. Though everyone fixated on Lord Kyo's children resembling him and harbouring his power, not many considered or even remembered they were part of Lady Misao too. That said child possessed her power as much as their father.
Misao softened, beaming with happiness and enthusiasm, to be able to speak about children again now that Soh was older. It had been taboo for so long due to her health conditions with her legs. It was comforting to be able to speak about it again so openly "Just think of it, a mini version of Kyo or myself. But with black hair and red eyes or brown. She'd be so cute" Misao laughed. Though having a demon with her colour hair would be unique, she secretly hoped that would be the case. Soh would have responsibility over his younger sister to protect her, to act as a role model to her as she got older.
Kyo raised his eyebrow, a smirk forming on his face, she was so insistent on this child being similar to her. However, what happened if she was caught off guard by a child that ended up being her worst nightmare? After all he was the younger of his siblings and was full of mischief and hated sharing. Misao hadn't considered how this may bite her in the ass, how she could end up regretting bringing a mini version of himself into the world. Soh was already a toddler and still needed regular attention, guidance and more, he was a handful even to his handlers and servants. Was Misao ready for that responsibility again with another child? He didn't want her rushing into something she wasn't sure of "But what if she has my personality" Kyo reminded her.
Misao narrowed her eyes suspiciously, peering at him and frowning, there was something he wasn't telling her. He was having doubts as he expected, but part of her couldn't help but wonder if Kyo was jealous. He didn't like sharing her attention with anyone, not even his son as much as he loved him. He was a father, and he didn't like sharing his wife with anyone. "Are you saying our future daughter would be a Tsundere?" Misao questioned.
"If she was a daddy's girl, she definitely would be" Kyo pressed, imagining his future daughter following him or Misao around like their personal shadow, attached at the hip. Getting sulky or moody when they didn't show her attention, if she felt ignored etc. God forbid how she would act if she had a crush on someone, be they a boy or a girl. She would become heartbroken at the idea of them being attached to someone else. Handling that sort of energy as a child, let alone as a teenager would become exhausting.
"Lady Yuri was a Tsundere, she was in love with Lord Yoh for years, at the very idea of another woman marrying Lord Yoh she was distraught" Sagami reflected. She too had been born into the same orphanage as Zenki had been, nobody knew what became of her birth parents. But Lord Yoh had met his future wife when she was still very young. She was deeply attached to him and hated to be away from him, only being obedient when he asked her to do something. As she got older, when Lord Yoh became clan leader and was proposed to marry a bride, Yuri had been heartbroken at the idea of another woman having him. Yuri had ended up becoming his wife, bearing him two sons and developing a commanding, authoritative and well respected clan leaders wife. She mentored her sons and had gained a strong sense of confidence and sexuality. She was still greatly respected even after her passing.
Kyo frowned, his mother was an innately kind person and always had been, she loved her sons with every fibre of her being. Making sure they received all the love she never had as a child. Even as cruel as Sho had been, he loved their mother just as much and it devastated him when she passed. Wishing she could have lived to see him become clan leader, to become a father and meet Misao. However, he knew Buzen had a crush on her before he knew she was Lord Yoh's wife, making him uncomfortable when other men spoke of his mother. "Oi! Don't talk about my mother that way" Kyo protested. Misao laughed, seeing Kyo act this childish, it was always so obvious he was a mama's boy, just as his son was.
A hint of a smirk danced across Sagami's face, biting back laughter at seeing his leader sulking. "Lord Kyo would become the protective father, he would be scaring off anyone who offered his hand or showed interest in her" Sagami suggested. He could imagine him secretly following her around, asking about anyone whom she may have a crush on, any admirers. Chasing off anyone who tried to confess to her. The protective father, just as Lady Misao's father was towards her. It wasn't hard to imagine him behaving that way. Nobody but the best for his daughter, only someone who was truly devoted to her, which with his standards would be impossible.
"He'd be as bad as Zenki" Misao laughed, Zenki had multiple adopted siblings but he was most protective of his sister. She had fallen for a human, having been teenage friends until they got older. However, he had health conditions and during one of his worse ones, she tried to carry him to safety. In doing so one of her wings was permanently damaged so she only had one. She later left the village in order to live in the human world as his wife. Zenki would never openly admit how much he missed her and how much he hated that she left.
Kyo glared at her, he and Zenki had always butted heads due to having a similar stubborn streak, but he was in truth surprisingly easy going. He'd taken over as a monk and caretaker of the orphanage he grew up in after leaving the DaiTengu "Did you just compare me to Zenki's sister complex?" Kyo accused. The sliding door opened and Soh's small face peeked through the doorway, he didn't want to admit he had partially overheard their conversation. Mostly his mother teasing his father. He didn't want to interrupt out of fear that he would get into trouble, so he quietly listened until it felt right to appear.
Misao softened, beaming at her son's sleepy face, his droopy eyes and bashful nature. He was always so cute when he first woke up from a nap. Instantly crawling to her nap for cuddles and quietly listening to their conversation. "Soh, did you have a good nap?" Misao questioned softly. Part of her hoped he hadn't been woken up by their intense conversation or possibly speaking too loud, she would feel so guilty. Soh nodded bashfully, still hiding behind the sliding door, unsure of whether he was allowed to join. Misao beckoned the space beside her, encouraging him to join them, after all he had inspired this conversation "Papa and I were just talking about siblings" she smiled.
Soh's expression lit up, his parents were speaking about babies? He had asked his mother, aware of her struggles due to his birth, he felt selfish asking her such a thing. But they were talking about it and his father didn't appear angry. Could it be they were actually considering giving him a sibling?
Kyo's expression became stern, he needed his son to understand the consequences of what he was asking her. Though he and Misao were blessed with their miracle child, it had nearly cost her life. The restraints Misao would have, the potential harm it may cause her. He would never make this decision for Misao, but he needed their son to know the risk. Misao wasn't a demon like them, she was a human, she was more fragile "Soh, come here" Kyo ordered patiently. Soh stiffened, obediently entering the room to sit near his parents, trying to appear brave. He nervously stared his father in the eye, feeling the intensity of his gaze. Kyo took a deep breath "You know that your mother endured a great deal to give birth to you?" he asked. Both her mental and physical wellbeing, the stigma of being a teenage mother. Having to abandon her whole life for the sake of their son. She had sacrificed a great deal.
Soh nodded sadly, his mother had never regretted giving birth to him, nor the loss of her legs. She had never once blamed him, guilt tripped him or hated him for it. She had always been kind, patient and loving.
Kyo sighed, he could see his son was struggling, the expression of guilt in his eyes. Now that he knew she struggled with walking, he cheered her on when she made improvements. If another villager made fun of her or commented on her ability to walk, he got as angry as Kyo did, just verbally. "And you know that your mother had to improve her mobility and health to recover" he reminded him. Aside from assistance from demon villagers, Misao had also been to clinics and hospitals back in the human world too. Anything that would help her get better.
Soh nodded again, his eyes gleaming with unshed tears
Kyo softened, sensing that he was distressing his son and making him feel like he was to blame. It was still hard for him not to get angry about it. Misao giving him a silent expression of encouragement, but also a warning look to not be cruel to their son. He had never spoken about his mother with his son, it was rare he even thought of her. But it was inevitable, he would find out either way. "However, your grandmother, my late mother also had health conditions. She was a frail woman and was at first discouraged to become the clan leaders wife" Kyo explained. She had all proven them wrong, everyone who doubted her or believed she was unsuited for the role. But she became the strongest woman he could think of. Just as Misao had proven everyone else wrong.
Soh's head snapped upwards, staring at his father in surprise and awe, he had never spoken of his grandmother before. It wasn't until he was older that the remaining DaiTengu took her to visit his grave. He knew she was very special to his father. Misao stared at Kyo in surprise, stunned he was speaking about his mother, aware of what a delicate subject it was. She was the most important person in his life, second to her. She was the love of Lord Yoh's life, losing her had broken their family.
"She managed to birth me and my brother without any difficulty, though she had the benefit of being a full blooded demon. We can look into medicinal properties and using energy deposits. Anything that might make a pregnancy easier" Kyo sighed. His mother's position had greatly differed from Misao's, she had benefits and privileges Misao didn't have. She had a smooth pregnancy despite any hardships. Now that they had the knowledge of the Senka, the documents, they could prepare better. They had the alliances of the Kuzunoha clan and Dodoji clan through their friendships which empowered both of them. Tadanobu had been very helpful and supportive of their marriage and children. If they were to have a second child, they would help them in any way they could to make it smoother. Misao cupped her mouth in surprise, nearly on the verge of tears, Kyo had accepted that she wanted another child. He was willing to try and reproduce a second heir, willing to support her decision.
"That was very mature of you Lord Kyo" Sagami praised
Soh's eyes warped with glassy tears, his face wobbling before he lunged at his father, burying himself in his chest, sobbing and sobbing. Catching Kyo off guard with his son's abrupt gesture of affection, throwing himself into his embrace. He knew he was asking a lot of his mother, he knew he was putting her in harms way. But he was happy they were willing to try, that they considered his feelings. "Thank you! Thank you papa! I'll be the best big brother I promise" he wailed.
Kyo winced, his cheeks flushing as he sighed in defeat, comforting his son patiently, while his expression softened. His son meant no harm, he had never intended to ignore his mother's well-being. He was an only child and the only half demon in the village. He was isolated, estranged and confused, he just wanted someone to understand him. He knew for a fact his son would dote on his sibling and protect her from the world. But he could imagine their arguments as they got older. Misao laughed fondly, watching the two interact, seeing Soh cling to his father. It was a touching moment.
"Well, Soh's name came to you in a dream, you prophesied our son's name. So maybe our future daughter might come to you too" Kyo hummed, lying back in their bed reflectively staring at the ceiling. Thinking of baby names so soon, when had that happened? Thinking of expanding their family, creating more offspring. His life with Misao had changed so drastically since they first met, he never thought this life would be possible. Being able to share this with her.
Misao hummed, she remembered how Soh had whispered his name in her ear, how she had held him before he was even born. Thinking of the person their daughter would grow up to be, the woman she would become. She refused to allow her daughter to be ignored or forced into a traditional role she didn't want. She could become a future clan leader, DaiTengu, a teacher, anything she wanted. She wanted her daughter to have the same opportunities as Soh. "Hikari? Hitomi?" she questioned.
Kyo gave her an amused expression, wondering just how these names came to her. Thinking of how delighted Misao's parents, let alone his father would be for a granddaughter to be born. The village would be surprised at her competing for the role of clan leader, expecting the eldest son to take on the role. However, he agreed with Misao. He cared little for the approval of his clan and their opinion of him. "Sun child? You know that can also be can also be translated to male child?" he laughed.
Misao pouted, their daughter would be as bright as the son and the light of their lives, just as Soh was. Perhaps another name would come to her in time, but she liked these ones. She didn't appreciate Kyo teasing her over such things, she hadn't heard him giving any good opinions yet. Whatever name their daughter would have, it would be as special as the person she would grow into. "Well, she might end up a tomboy, or a daddy's girl" Misao interjected.
Kyo's expression became reflective, she had chosen the names well despite his teasing. Misao always put her heart into such things, thinking of the person their child would grow up to be. The person their child would become as they navigated the world. He knew for a fact the villagers would compare their children, just as they had him and Sho as kids. He would never let anyone make his children feel like that, the only competition he would encourage was sibling rivalry. But he wouldn't have his children pitted against one another. "Hitomi can mean pupil of the eye. But it also translates to beautiful history" Kyo hummed.
Misao softened, her cheeks flushed pink as she reflected upon this, realising Kyo was considering this as much as she was. The story that led them to meeting as children, becoming her first love and eventually marrying one another. All they had overcome and endured to get where they were now, how special they were to one another. She reached out to squeeze his hand supportively, knowing how frightening this decision would be for him, scared to lose her again. "Like our love story" Misao smiled.
Kyo softened, he was happy they could talk about it, but he didn't want her to rush into something due to pressure. She wasn't expected to have multiple children, their clan was already prosperous, he was happy with their life. He was just happy the woman he loved had become his wife, that she was all his. "Are you really sure you want to do this?" Kyo asks.
Misao nods, this decision was her own, she had done so of free will. She wasn't forced into anything and she would never regret what led her to this life. Soh was a symbol of their love, of the life they had fought for, she would never regret that. Being a mother had changed her and made her grateful for all she had endured and survived. "Our children are blameless to the fate that brought us together".
Kyo pouts, playfully squeezing her cheeks, causing her to whimper in pain and frown at him, calling him mean "When did you get so mature?" he teases. But eventually stroked her cheek, closing the gap between them to wrap his arms around her. Nuzzling her face fondly, breathing in her sweet scent.
