Katy's head pounded painfully as she looked up at the dreaded black hole high above her, watching as it destroyed whole civilisations, reducing them to nothing. The throbbing in her head got worse and worse by the second, as her face contorted in pain, forcing her to clutch onto the railing beside her, trying to steady herself. Her skull felt as if it was being ripped in two when a deep voice spoke.
Don't turn around.
Her heart was close to jumping out of her chest when she felt a hand on her shoulder, causing her to twist around and grab whoever had touched her. Her eyes snapped open to see the Doctor's brown eyes staring back at her, realising that she was clutching onto the collar of his shirt, having pushed him against the nearby wall.
"Sorry...I didn't...I thought you were..." Katy stuttered over her words, before releasing her grip on him.
"You looked like you were in pain" The Doctor stated, concern written all over his face.
"It's just a headache" Katy dismissed, a little too quickly.
She fought down the urge to flinch as the Doctor reached out to place his hand over her forehead, checking whether she had a fever. She frowned when she felt her skin tingle as he moved his hand down to cup her cheek, finding the gesture strangely intimate. Did friends usually touch each other that way?
"You don't feel feverish" He mumbled, slowly pulling his hand away from her face.
"Could have told you that myself, I am a nurse, remember?" She huffed, as his lips twitched into a smile.
"Well, all of this certainly hasn't affected your sarcasm" The Doctor teased.
"Are you referring to the part where we're barely remaining in orbit under a black hole, or that we're probably stranded here?" Katy retorted.
"Both" The Doctor shrugged, as an amused sound left Katy's lips.
"It could be worse. This lot said they'd give us a lift" Rose interjected, having been watching their interaction from where she was perched on a nearby stool.
"And then what?" The Doctor sighed, as he turned to his companion and took the seat opposite her.
"I don't know...find a planet...get a job...live a life, same as the rest of the universe" Rose suggested, as the Doctor grimaced.
"I'd have to settle down. In a house or something, a proper house with...with...doors and things. Carpets! Me! Living in a house!" The Doctor muttered, with a shake of his head.
"You'd have to get a mortgage" Rose grinned, as the Doctor's face morphed into horror.
"...No" The Doctor retorted, as Katy slid down onto the stool beside him.
"Oh, yes" Rose giggled.
"I am dying. That's it. I am dying, it's all over" The Doctor scoffed, as Katy gave him a nudge with her elbow.
"Just wait till' you find out about taxes" Katy teased, falling into a fit of laughter when she saw how the Doctor shivered.
"What about me? I'd have to get one too. I dunno', could...could be the same one, we could both... dunno'...share. Or not, you know. Whatever" Rose mumbled, unable to look him in the eye.
Katy watched the Doctor's reaction closely, as he nodded, an almost scared expression growing on his face. His eyes flickered nervously to Rose as she continued stuttering over her words, a blush rising on her cheeks.
"I dunno', we'll sort something out..." Rose trailed off, running a hand through her hair.
"Yeah...Anyway..." The Doctor murmured, seemingly very interested in staring at the table in front of him suddenly.
"I...um, I'll just see if I can get any signal on my phone, you...you never know, right?" Rose suggested, quick to stand on her feet and make a speedy exit.
A few moments of tense silence washed over the Doctor, only to be broken when Katy began snickering, clutching at her stomach, clearly amused by what she had just seen. The Doctor rolled his eyes, leaning back on his stool, now refusing to meet even her eyes.
"What?" He frowned.
"Oh, come on. No, seriously? You're that oblivious?" Katy gaped, watching as the Doctor raised an eyebrow at her.
"She was asking you to move in with her. God, you're hopeless" Katy mocked.
"We already live together. In the TARDIS" The Doctor pointed out, as she gave him a look of disbelief.
"Okay, I've known Rose for, what? A day or two in this confusing timeline, and I can already see the poor girl is head over heels for you. She clearly has no taste" Katy teased.
"I think you're imagining things" The Doctor scoffed, his brows knitted together.
"Whatever you say, Doc" Katy shrugged.
"...She's human" The Doctor all but whispered, a few moments later.
"Yeah, I figured that" Katy stated.
"She has a normal lifespan. Eighty more years, if she's lucky. How can I..." The Doctor trailed off, running a hand down his face.
"Well, I think you're gonna' find it hard to find someone to grow old with, right?" Katy pointed out, before pulling herself to her feet, and wandered over to Rose.
The Doctor watched her as she walked away, a conflicted expression on his face, thinking to himself that he wasn't the only oblivious one in the room. His life had certainly been simpler before Katy came along. His thoughts were interrupted when he heard a bleeping sound from across the room, watching as Rose placed her phone to her ear before chucking it away from her a second later, brown eyes wide with terror.
"But what did the voice actually sound like?" Katy questioned.
They were hurrying through the base toward Ood habitation after Rose had received a horrifying phone call. One that had set them all on edge, especially Katy. Something was wrong. Very wrong.
"I don't know...I've never heard anything like it" Rose admitted, as they walked down the stairwell, finding Danny keying prompts into the computer above where the Ood were.
"Evening! Only us!" The Doctor exclaimed, jumping down the last stair.
"The mysterious three. How are you, then? Settling in?" Danny inquired.
"Yeah, sorry, straight to business, the Ood, how do they communicate? I mean, with each other" The Doctor asked, as Katy looked down at the animal pen they were keeping the Ood in.
"Oh, just empaths. There's a low-level telepathic field connecting them. Not that that does them much good. They're basically a herd race. Like cattle" Danny shrugged, as Katy gave him a look of disgust.
"This telepathic field, can it pick up messages?" The Doctor queried.
"Cos I was having dinner, and one of the Ood said something...well, odd. And then I got something else on my er...communicator thing" Rose stated, sharing a glance with the Doctor.
"Oh, be fair. We've got whole star systems burning up around us. There are all sorts of stray transmissions. Probably nothing...Look, if there was something wrong, it would show. We monitor the telepathic field. It's the only way to look after them. They're so stupid, they don't even tell us when they're ill" Danny pointed out, as Katy resisted the urge to slap him.
"Have you ever actually thought about, I don't know...asking them?" Katy retorted.
"Well...no" Danny confessed, looking a little embarrassed.
"Monitor the field, that's this thing?" The Doctor questioned, nodding to the computer.
"Yeah. But as I said, it's low-level telepathy. They only register Basic 5" Danny shrugged, as Katy cringed, her head suddenly feeling full, ears buzzing.
"Well, that's not Basic 5. 10...20...They've gone up to Basic 30" The Doctor announced, as the Ood's head snapped up.
"But they can't..." Danny trailed off, with wide eyes.
"D-doctor..." Katy stuttered, clutching at her head as a piercing scream echoed in her mind.
"Katy, what's wrong? Katy?" The Doctor frowned, placing his hands on her shoulders as she leant forward, her face contorted in pain.
"What does Basic 30 mean?" Rose asked, watching as all of the Ood turned to face them.
"Well, it means that they're shouting, screaming inside their heads" Danny mumbled, as the Doctor's attention remained on Katy, who was groaning in pain.
"You're wrong...it's something shouting at them" Katy exclaimed, scrunching her eyes shut.
"What's it saying? What can you hear?" Danny insisted, as Katy reached out to clutch onto the Doctor's arms for support.
"He is awake" Katy exclaimed, in a shaky tone.
"And you will worship him" The Ood replied, as Rose jumped back in shock.
"What the hell?" Danny gaped, his mouth gone slack.
"He is awake" The Doctor repeated, toward the Ood.
"And you will worship him" The Ood told him.
"Worship who? Who's talking to you? Who is it?" The Doctor pushed, but gained no reply.
"Doctor...my head..." Katy cried, feeling as if her mind was on fire.
Her grip tightened on his arms as he turned back to her, reaching up to cup her face in his hands, forcing him to look at her. His own eyes then fluttered shut, needing to touch Katy to be able to enter her mind. He grimaced as his own ears filled with horrifying screaming and began to try to draw her mind out of the link she had with the Ood. Seconds passed, but soon enough he felt the connection to her he was searching for and tugged with all his might. Their eyes suddenly snapped open a moment later, breathing heavily, thankful that the screaming was finally gone from both their minds.
"...Thanks" Katy panted, still holding onto his arms.
"No problem" The Doctor nodded, with a sheepish expression, before he pulled his hands away from her face.
Rose watched the two closely, embarrassed when she felt jealousy coursing through her, as she shook her head vehemently. They had much bigger problems than her feelings at that moment.
Before the group could investigate more into what was infecting the Ood's telepathic field, the whole base started shaking, as a warning rang out through the speakers announcing a hull breach. The group were soon rushing through the space station to find everyone miraculously seemed unhurt despite part of the base being open to the elements for some minutes. Everyone apart from Scooti. Her bio-chip led them to Habitation Three but the young woman was nowhere to be found. That was until the Doctor looked up.
She was dead.
Floating above them in the vacuum of space, a terrified expression immortalised on her face. Katy lowered her gaze to the floor quickly, feeling sick to her stomach. She hadn't said two words to the woman. She hadn't even spared her a second thought. Could she have somehow saved her?
As if right of cue, the drilling into the planet below stopped, causing a tense silence to wash over the group. The Doctor shared a look with Katy, who could tell his decision had been made. He was getting his TARDIS back and he was going to save everyone person left on the base.
Katy watched anxiously as the Doctor and Rose said their goodbyes beside the capsule that would take him deep into the planet. She was quickly regretting bringing up the idea of one of them going, feeling dread consume her. Something down there was calling out to them, almost tauntingly. They should have been running in the other direction. Katy watched as Rose leant forward to press a kiss to the helmet the Doctor was wearing, a smile on her face as she did so, her expression shared by the Doctor. Katy slowly strolled over to him as Rose went to speak to Zach, hoping she'd be able to speak him out of going. Instead, she found her mind go blank as he stared down at her with his big brown eyes.
"Don't expect a kiss from me too" Katy blurted out, making the Doctor snort.
"I was just hoping you weren't going to try slapping me again" The Doctor retorted.
"Don't tempt me" Katy smirked.
"You sure that I can't convince you not to go down there?" Katy questioned, allowing the concern to show on her face for a moment.
"You almost sounded worried about me" The Doctor exclaimed, cheekily.
"Nah, just worried about how I'm gonna' get off this planet, that's all" Katy shrugged.
"Look after Rose for me?" The Doctor asked, as Katy gave a quick nod.
"I'll be back soon. Promise" The Doctor told her.
"...I'm not hugging you either, you know" Katy teased, when she saw the Doctor looking at her expectantly.
"No. Never" He chuckled, giving her one last look before walking toward the capsule.
"Hey, just...just be careful, alright?" Katy exclaimed, reaching out for his arm to stop him.
"Always am" He grinned at her, before entering the capsule beside Ida.
All too soon, the pair were descending into the tunnel below, as Rose and Katy watched anxiously on the monitor. Rose kept her hand on the communicator the whole way down, biting her lip every so often. She was clearly worried out of her mind.
"Don't forget to breathe. Breathing is good" Rose told them.
"Rose, stay off the comm" Zach huffed, from where he was in the control room.
"Fat chance" Rose muttered.
"I think he remembers how to breathe, Rose" Katy sniggered, making Rose pout.
Suddenly, a shockwave was sent up from the tunnel, making the whole base shake for a split second. Katy looked to the monitor to find the capsule had made it to Point 0...but there was still no word from the Doctor or Ida. Had something gone wrong already?
"Doctor? Doctor, are you alright?" Rose questioned.
"Ida, report to me. Doctor?" Zach insisted, but neither gained a reply.
"Doctor, answer the bloody comms" Katy scolded, grabbing the communicator from Rose's hands.
"It's alright. We've made it...coming out of the capsule now" The Doctor announced, as Rose breathed a sigh of relief.
Just as Katy opened her mouth to speak, pain was ripping through her skull, just as forcefully as before. Something was calling out to the Ood again. She clutched at her aching head, turning to the three Ood standing only a few metres away, who had gone stiff. They appeared to be almost as pained as she was. She tried to ignore screaming in her head for a few more minutes, but it soon became unbearable.
"Katy?" Rose exclaimed, as Katy's head snapped up to look at her.
"Y-yeah?" She responded, shakily.
"Something's happening with the Ood" Rose informed her, in a grave tone.
"No shit...Danny, what's happening?" Katy inquired, taking the communicator from Rose's hand.
"It's the telepathic field. It's at Basic 100! I've checked, there isn't any fault. It's definitely 100" Danny answered, causing Katy to frown.
"But that's impossible" Zach muttered, overhearing their conversation on the comms.
"What's Basic 100 mean?" Rose asked Jefferson, who appeared disturbed by the news.
"Basic 100's brain death" Jefferson confessed, as Katy twisted around to look back at the Ood.
"Well, if they're dead...why are they still standing?" Katy pointed out, finding the Ood weren't even blinking anymore.
"Keep watching them. And you, Jefferson, keep a guard on the Ood" Zach advised, as Jefferson picked his gun up off the floor.
"You can't fire a gun in here. What if they hit a wall?" Rose said, in a panicked tone.
"I'm firing stock 15, only impacts upon organics. Keep watch. Guard them" Jefferson ordered the guard beside them, as they readied their weapons.
"Is everything alright up there?" The Doctor's voice echoed through the comms.
"It's fine" Zach replied.
"Just peachy" Katy muttered into the comms, her eyes never leaving the Ood.
"We've found something. It looks like metal. Like some sort of seal. I've got a nasty feeling the word might be "trapdoor". Not a good word, "trapdoor". Never met a trapdoor I liked" The Doctor rambled.
"Sounds like it's time to back up to me. Right, Doctor? Doctor?" Katy insisted, but he gave her no reply.
"The edge is covered with those symbols" Ida murmured.
"Do you think it opens?" Zach inquired, causing Katy to roll her eyes.
"Uh, question. Why the fuck would we want it to?" Katy scoffed.
"No profanities on comms" Zach scolded her.
"Then don't say stupid things, sir" Katy retorted.
"Are you two finished? It's massive, Zach. About thirty feet in diameter" Ida continued, as Katy looked at the monitor to find her life signs flashing up on the screen as her heart rate had increased.
"I suppose the writing will tell us what to do. The letters that defy translation" The Doctor mumbled.
"Toby, did you get anywhere with decoding it?" Zach queried, as Katy and Rose turned to the man who had been huddled on the floor for the last few minutes.
"Toby, they need to know, that lettering, does it make any sort of sense?" Rose questioned.
"I know what it says" Toby replied, as a shiver went down Katy's spine.
She recognised that voice. The tone was so deep it caused every hair on her arm to stand on end, as she immediately reached out for Rose's arm.
"Then tell them" Rose stated.
"When did you work that out?" Jefferson frowned.
"It doesn't matter, just tell them" Rose insisted, as Toby slowly stood up, pulling his arms away from his face.
Katy's mouth hung open as she saw black symbols were now covering every inch of Toby's skin, his eyes an ominous red colour. His face was full of contempt, of hatred. Katy was quick to drag Rose behind her, remembering her promise to the Doctor.
"These are the words of the Beast. And he has woken. He is the heart that beats in the darkness, he is the blood that will never cease. And now he will rise" Toby warned them, his lips a dark blue, clearly cyanotic.
"Officer, stand down. Stand down!" Jefferson cried, pointing his gun at his former colleague.
"What is it? What's he done? What's happening, Katy? Rose? What's going on?!" The Doctor exclaimed through the comms, in a panicked tone.
"Officer, as commander of security, I order you to stand down and be confined. Immediately!" Jefferson shouted, as Toby tilted his head.
"Mr Jefferson, tell me, sir...did your wife ever forgive you?" Toby asked, in a taunting tone.
"I don't know what you mean" Jefferson lied, his face going pale.
"Let me tell you a secret: she never did" Toby retorted, taking a step forward.
"Officer...you stand down and be confined" Jefferson ordered, despite how his hands were shaking on his gun.
"Or what?" Toby goaded.
"Or under the jurisdiction of Condition Red, I am authorised to shoot you" Jefferson pointed out, aiming his gun at Toby's chest.
"But how many can you kill?" Toby smirked, before opening his mouth impossibly wide.
His red eyes lit up, as a low roar escaped his lips and the symbols on his face evaporated and left him in swirls of black smoke. Katy shoved Rose backward, far away from the smoke which shifted toward the Ood before anyone could stop it. The Ood jerked and shook as the smoke entered through their eyes, which turned the same red as Toby's had been. The man in question became spluttering, his brow furrowed as if he was coming out of a trance before collapsing to the floor. Jefferson immediately raised his gun at the Ood, as they all turned to them, eyes burning red.
"We are the Legion of the Beast" The Ood announced.
The Doctor and Ida stood helplessly in the centre of the planet, hearing nothing but interference on their comms, as panic coursed through the Doctor's veins. He should have listened to Katy, he realised. He was storming off back toward the capsule without another word, desperate to get back to his friends before it was too late.
"The Legion shall be many. And the Legion shall be few..." The Ood trailed off, their voices mixed with the Beast.
"He has woven himself in the fabric of your life since the dawn of time. Some may call him Abaddon. Some may call him Krop Tor. Some may call him Satan" The Ood chanted, as they raised their communicator globes in the air, which had begun to spark.
"Okay, fuck this. Everyone out. Out!" Katy cried, pushing Rose toward the door.
The Ood continued approaching despite Jefferson's warnings, appearing possessed by whatever the Beast was. Katy all but dragged Rose away as they reached the door, her eyes going wide when she found it wouldn't open.
"Get that door open!" Jefferson insisted, walking backwards up the stairs.
"Yeah, I'm trying!" Katy retorted, desperately trying to force the door to open.
"Open fire!" Jefferson exclaimed, as he and the other guard began to shoot the Ood, blinding both Katy and Rose.
Katy shielded Rose from the onslaught, wrapping her arms around the younger girl, feeling how badly she was shaking. A few seconds later, they heard three bodies hit the floor and turned to find the Ood bleeding out on the ground. Katy let out a sigh of despair, feeling guilt slither around her heart. The Ood weren't in control of their actions. They didn't deserve to die. Rose was quickly running past her and grabbing the communicator, shouting the Doctor's name.
"Doctor, Ida, you there?" Rose insisted, as Katy rushed over to her.
"Hey, don't panic. They're probably safer down there right now" Katy said, trying to soothe both their frayed nerves.
Her head snapped up when she heard the computer announce that the door was being opened, expecting more Ood to attack them. She was relieved when she saw it was Danny instead who was breaking into the room, a terrified expression on his face.
"It's the Ood. They've gone mad" Danny announced.
"You think?" Katy scoffed, ushering toward the now-dead Ood on the floor.
"How many of them?" Jefferson asked.
"All of them! All fifty!" Danny gulped, as they heard banging on the other side of the door.
"Danny, out of the way. Out of the way!" Jefferson shouted, shoving the younger man away, as he approached the door.
"But they're armed! It's the interface device. I don't know how, but they're using it as a weapon!" Danny warned, as Katy's eyes widened in horror when she saw Jefferson opening the door.
"What are you doing?!" She screeched, but it was already too late.
The door flung open, revealing dozens of Ood outside, as the nearest one raised the white globe in its hand out, touching the guard's forehead. She let out a bloodcurdling scream, as she appeared to be electrocuted, her body flopping to the floor, dead before she hit the ground. Katy was sprinting forward as Jefferson shot the Ood in the head. She was then kicking the Ood backwards toward the crowd that had been advancing and slammed the door shut, breathing heavily.
"Fuck" She muttered, leaning her forehead against the door for a moment.
"You alright?" Danny panted.
"Nope. You?" She asked, as he gave a quick shake of his head.
"Shitting my pants" Danny murmured, making her snort.
"Given the emergency...I recommend Strategy Nine" She heard Jefferson suggest in the comms.
"Strategy Nine agreed. Right, we need to get everyone together. Rose? What about Ida and the Doctor? Any word?" Zach's voice echoed through the comms from where he was still in the control room.
"I can't get any reply, just...nothing, I keep trying, but it's—" Rose began, in a shaky tone, when the Doctor's voice interrupted her.
"No, sorry, I'm fine. Still here!" The Doctor announced, a little too cheerfully.
"You could've said, you stupid bastard!" Rose cried, angrily.
"Whoa! Careful! Anyway, it's both of us, me and Ida. Hello! But the seal opened up. It's gone. All we've got left is this chasm" The Doctor informed them.
"How deep is it?" Zach asked.
"I don't give a shit how deep it is—" Katy started, when Zach cut her off.
"Alright with the profanities you two!" Zach groaned.
"Doctor. I swear to God, if you don't make it back up here in the next ten minutes, I'm coming down there to get you myself, you hear me?" Katy muttered, grabbing the communicator from Rose.
"Yeah, I don't think she's joking" Rose added.
"We've come all this way" The Doctor insisted.
"This whole planet has had the word trap written all over it since we came here. And you're the only one who can get me and Rose out of here, okay? So, you have a goddamn duty of care. Get your arse up here!" Katy all but commanded, making Danny snigger.
"...Yes, Ma'am" The Doctor replied, in an almost teasing tone, a few seconds later.
"Your kinda' scary, you know that?" Danny stated, as she gave a slight shrug.
"Thank you" She smirked.
"Now, I guess our only problem is him..." Katy trailed off, nodding toward Toby, having seen out of the corner of her eye that he had awoken.
"You want to shoot him, or should I?" Katy asked Jefferson, as Rose gave her a horrified look.
"Katy, what are you doing?" Rose gaped, watching as Toby cowered on the floor, his blue eyes wide.
"He's infected. He brought that thing on board. You saw it" Jefferson answered for her, pointing his gun toward the shaking man.
"Are you gonna' start shooting your own people, now? Is that what you're gonna' do? Is it?" Rose argued.
"If necessary" Jefferson retorted.
"Well then, you'll have to shoot me "if necessary", so what's it gonna be?" Rose threatened, as Jefferson reluctantly lowered his gun and stormed away.
Before Rose could approach Toby, Katy's hand shot out to stop her, knowing the truth that the blonde didn't seem to notice. She had seen the blue of Toby's lips, how he had gone missing during the second quake. She expected he was like the Ood now. Braindead. Whatever the Beast was, it was using him as a puppet.
"He's bad news, Rose" Katy warned.
"He's a person. He matters just as much as any of us" Rose muttered, shrugging off her touch.
"That compassion of yours...it's gonna' get you killed one day" Katy sighed, with a shake of her head.
Rose flinched at her words, visibly hurt, but she didn't comment, knowing deep down that Katy was likely right. Before the girls could argue further the Doctor announced from the comms they were nearer the capsule. If they could just get him back, Katy was sure everything would be alright.
"Okay, we're in. Bring us up" Ida exclaimed.
"Ascension in...three...two...one—" Jefferson began, but cut himself off when the lights suddenly went off, plunging them into darkness.
"This is the Darkness. This is my domain" The Beast's voice echoed around the room, as Katy looked up toward the monitor, finding the Ood were using the communicator via the door to speak to them.
"You little things that live in the light...clinging to your feeble Suns which die in the end. Only the Darkness remains" The Ood continued.
"This is Captain Zachary Cross Flane of Sanctuary Base Six representing the Torchwood archive. You will identify yourself" Zach stated, firmly.
"You know my name" The Beast replied, as Katy's eyes flickered down to the Doctor's vitals, seeing his hearts had sped up.
"What do you want?" Zach queried.
"You will die here. All of you. This planet is your grave" The Beast said, almost gleefully.
"Maybe it'll be yours too" Katy retorted.
"I am eternal," The Beast told them.
"If you are the Beast, then answer me this: which one? Hmm? 'Cos the universe has been busy since you've been gone. There's more religions than there are planets in the sky. The Archivists...Pordonity, Christianity...Pash-Pash, New Judaism... Sanclar... Church of the Tin Vagabond, which devil are you?" The Doctor goaded, hoping to keep the creature talking.
"All of them" The Beast responded, causing the Doctor to scoff.
"What, then you're the truth behind the myth?" The Doctor mumbled.
"This one knows me, as I know him. The killer of his own kind" The Beast announced, causing Katy to frown.
Who had the Doctor killed?
He was a Time Lord, but surely, he wouldn't have hurt his kin? Katy wondered that if he had, maybe that was why he found it so easy to forgive what her own family had done. He might have committed a worse act. The silence was almost painful, as the Doctor clearly tried to think of a response.
"How did you end up on this rock?" The Doctor questioned.
"The Disciples of the Light rose up against me. And chained me in the pit for all eternity" The Beast stated, through it's puppets.
"When was this?" The Doctor inquired.
"Before time" The Beast responded, causing the Doctor to huff.
"What does that mean?!" The Doctor pushed.
"Before time" The Beast repeated.
"What does "before time" mean?" The Doctor all but yelled, growing tired of the conversation.
"Before light and time and space and matter. Before the cataclysm. Before this universe was created" The Beast exclaimed, as Katy quirked an eyebrow.
"I think you pissed it off" Katy informed the Doctor, in a quiet voice.
"That's impossible. No life could have existed back then" The Doctor muttered.
"Is that your religion?" The Beast mocked, doing the impossible.
The Doctor was lost for words.
"It's a belief" The Doctor answered, after finding his voice again.
"You know nothing. All of you. So small...The Captain, so scared of command...The soldier, haunted by the eyes of his wife. The scientist, still running from daddy. The little boy who lied...The virgin...And the lost girl, so far away from home. The valiant child who will die in battle so very soon" The Beast went on, in a threatening tone.
"Doctor, what does it mean?" Rose panicked.
"Rose, don't listen" The Doctor warned, but Rose was already freaking out.
"What does it mean?" Rose insisted, as Katy grabbed the communicator back once again.
"It means a load of shit. You want to scare someone, huh? Try me" Katy goaded, angrily.
"How like your mother you sound" The Beast replied, causing Katy to go still.
"...Fuck you" Katy spat out, before sending her elbow into the monitor screen, breaking it and stopping the Ood from being able to communicate with them.
"Thank you. Now, if you want voices in the dark, then listen to mine; that thing is playing on very basic fears. Darkness, childhood nightmares, all that stuff" The Doctor murmured, thankful that Katy had acted before the group descended into chaos.
"But that's how the devil works" Danny pointed out.
"Or a good psychologist" The Doctor exclaimed, as Katy nodded.
"But...how did it know about my father?" Ida asked, as the Doctor tried to think of an answer.
"Okay, but what makes his version of the truth any better than mine? Hmm? Cos' I'll tell you what I can see: humans. Brilliant humans. Humans who travel all the way across space. Flying in a tiny little rocket into the orbit of a black hole! Just for the sake of discovery, that's amazing! Do you hear me? Amazing. All of you. The captain, his officer, his elder, his genius, his friends. All with one advantage. The Beast is alone. We are not. If we can use that to fight against him..." The Doctor trailed off, as the capsule suddenly shook.
Katy twisted around to see the cable line snapping with a loud bang, descending at a dangerous pace down the tunnel. Toward where the Doctor and Ida were defenceless in the capsule.
"Doctor!" Katy cried.
