Lightning
All I will preface this with is don't question where my brain goes. Also song fic for Lightning by The Wanted
Buck didn't know why on earth Chimney had invited him to join him and Maddie on their night out in the club. He wasn't looking forward to being on the hot and sweaty dance floor with the bass pumping dancing with some girl who he had no intention of getting with past a one night stand even then that idea seemed awful as he was trying to stay as far away from his "Buck 1.0" days as much as possible. There was something about Chimney's voice which ultimately convinced Buck to go. He was trying to hide whatever scheme him and Maddie had come up with and it almost worked. Buck took a moment to gather his thoughts and pushed the door to the club open, greeted by sounds and smells of a typical nightclub.
He was scanning the room, looking for wherever his sister and future brother in law were sitting. He was half expecting them to be on the dance floor by now, or hogging the karaoke machine as they had done when he had third wheeled in the beginning of their relationship. There was someone on the dance floor, looking suspiciously like Eddie, but he shook his head. Eddie couldn't be there, he was having a quiet night in as Christopher was on a sleepover and he didn't feel like being social tonight. At least that is what Eddie had told Buck when they were speaking about Chimney's evening plans. "Buckaroo, over here" Chimney shouts to make himself heard over the music.
He joined them at the table, a beer quickly being handed to him. Whatever Chimney had up his sleeve apparently included the potential of Buck becoming drunk. "Great, now I am going to have to deal with a hangover just before my next shift." Buck thinks to himself. He was still heavily scrutinizing the area and the situation. Chimney and Maddie seemed surprisingly sober considering how almost drunk Chimney had made himself sound on the phone as Buck was trying to figure out how he was going to lie his way out of this. "So why am I here?" Buck asks them. The couple shares a look between each other, wondering if they should give the game away now.
"Because Evan, when was the last time you let your hair down and just had some fun?" Chimney says. Buck had almost turned around when he heard "Because Evan" as it was a phrase that only Eddie used on him and as far as Buck could tell Eddie wasn't here right now. Buck takes a hefty swig of his drink. He was going to need it with whatever hook up Chimney and Maddie were planning. He was also beginning to hate the idea of Maddie his own sister being in charge of breaking him out of the single pringle lifestyle he thought he was comfortably living until now. He was also thinking of how he was going to answer Chimney's question.
"I am starting to think your idea of fun for me is not my idea of fun anymore," Buck says, followed up swiftly by downing half of his beer in one go. Maddie had gone from calm to concerned with a million ideas going through her head. Maybe it was too soon after his breakup from his girlfriend. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. It sounds like their day at work hadn't gone very well with some of the calls they had. Or maybe he was after spending time with Eddie and their plan was going to need to speed up a little bit. On the other hand Buck was thinking about how he was going to try and find someone to call to get him out of this situation. Eddie would answer his call right?
He'd just need to come up with the perfect excuse as to why he needs to leave. He fires of a SOS text message to Eddie. At the same time he prays that Eddie's phone is nearby to the man so he can be of some help. Unbeknownst to Buck, Eddie was in fact in the same club. Maddie had been a little bit more forthcoming with their plan to him as Eddie had come to her some weeks ago asking for help in being able to finally get the courage to ask her brother out. Maddie had come to the sudden realization that it was that missing piece as to why this was already turning into a train wreck. Chimney is well known for not being able to keep a secret if his life depended on it so he was kept in the dark about their whole plan.
Eds: Maddie why is Buck texting me SOS
Mads: Sorry Chim is being a pest, I have had to keep our plan from him otherwise he would have given it away by now
Buck was getting more and more concerned as the minutes ticked by. His beer was finished and quickly replaced by another one. Why wasn't Eddie texting him back? He would normally have said something by now. Then the reason why became perfectly clear. Eddie walked his way over to the table and slid into the booth next to Buck throwing his arm around younger man's shoulder. He was lucky he still had that calming effect over his best friend as Buck relaxed under his touch. "Sorry Buck I only just got your text message," Eddie says. Buck was just glad for the company and Maddie was trying to not grin.
She could see the sparks as Eddie touched her brother and the love that he felt for the youngest. They definitely had her blessing to get together, hell that was the whole reason for tonight. If she had bribed Chimney into secrecy the mission would have been operation get Buddie together or something similar. However, she knows that if Chimney knew then Hen and Bobby were probably going to be involved and she didn't want that for them. She was worried that they would get too nervous and not say what was on their mind or how they really felt. Yes Chim was a liability in this but she was buying his silence.
"It's fine, didn't realize you had plans tonight," Buck replies, crushing Maddie's heart. Eddie sent her a look which said I've got this. He was only two beers in but had the confidence he felt he needed. Chimney had gone quiet and for that Maddie couldn't be more grateful. She watched as Eddie made Evan give him eye contact as he planned on dealing with the millions of emotions that surrounded them both. He was going to do this tonight. His time was now or he feared losing Evan for good. He could see Evan was trying to look behind him to see if there was a girl waiting for him, wondering where he had gone. There was no one there and Eddie was relaxed as he smiled.
You're in control, pressing pause on my heartbeat. Someone stole all the air, so I can't speak now I know the chase is on. I feel as though my time has come.
"Come with me Evan," Eddie says. Not taking no for an answer as he took Buck's hand in his. The younger of the two allowing him to be led away. Eddie looked back to Maddie with a wink as Buck was led speechlessly away from their booth. He had no idea what was going on as he was led to the dance floor. The songs too heavy to be a slow dance tune, but something told him they weren't going to be slow dancing. He didn't even think they were going to dance as Eddie led them through the dance floor out of sight of Maddie and Chimney. Whatever was about to happen next was going to be away from them. For a moment they felt like teenagers running away from their friends to make out.
How many times do I fly through your headspace? Now it's speeding away from a safe place
Eddie thinks back to every moment where he really needed someone to be there for him and Evan was always there no questions asked. He was the one who introduced Carla into their lives. The one who saved Christopher more times than he could count especially during that tsunami. The way that Evan was the one to take care of Chris while he was in the hospital after being shot. Through thick and thin the constant stable source of comfort and love had been Evan and they were just too blind to see it until now. Now they were in a nightclub after Maddie had become fed up with them not asking each other out. "There's been something I have been meaning to do," Eddie says.
Yeah, your skin, your touch, the kiss, the rush too much and here it comes
Evan was still too speechless. This was a rarity in itself as Eddie loved the times where he couldn't shut him up as he rambled facts he knew on the way to cases. The way that after that initial spat of jealousy he reassured Eddie that Chris was going to be fine in the school during the earthquake. Evan tilted his head to the side, confused as the golden retriever they had all come to love. Eddie placed his finger and his thumb on the man's chin and just out of view of the other couple he smashed his lips onto Buck's who in return kissed him back and held on for dear life. Out of all of the possibilities he had this was not on his list and he for once was not scared. He was going to enjoy this.
When your lips touch mine it's the kiss of life, I know. I know that it's a little bit frightening. We might as well be playing with lightning. We touch like, Like it's our first time, oh-oh. I know that it's a little bit frightening. We might as well be playing with lightning now.
When the kiss ended it was like they didn't know what to do with each other. There was no going back now. They had crossed the line from friends to lovers and it was both scary and exciting all at once. "I didn't have plans for tonight, then I got speaking to Maddie and things just happened. I am in love with you Evan," Eddie says, watching as the penny dropped in Evan's brain. He looks over in the direction of where his sister's table was in slight disbelief. He can't believe he has been sent on a blind date by his sister as his date was the man he has secretly been harboring a crush on since day one.
Just you and me and the coats in the back room. Learning things they don't teach in classroom. Now, you're here and feel the fear, but everything is oh so clear
"I'm in love with you too Eddie," Evan says, finally feeling like he was able to say something. Eddie was going to be concerned if he didn't. Meanwhile on the table Maddie was very happy with herself as she just saw her brother get his last first kiss with the man he was definitely spending the rest of his life with. Chimney missed the entire thing as he was getting the four of them drinks for when Evan and Eddie eventually returned to the table. Maddie had a rough plan with Eddie and the night was finally going to plan. She was sure after that passionate kiss she just witnessed that they will have confessed their feelings for each other and will return to the table eventually as boyfriends.
I've been addicted to you since it first hit. Out of control like a surge of electric
Yeah, your skin, your touch, the kiss, the rush too much and here it comes
Back with Buddie, and they had kissed again. This time no holding back as they turned it into a heavy make out session near the dance floor. A little voice in their heads told them both that they were grateful to be sober during all of this and that they could enjoy this knowing that this was real and this was truly happening. There was no dreaming going on here, nobody waking up out of a strange coma dream. Chimney could finally see what was going on and he looked towards Maddie. "Wait, you knew about this?" he asks her and she nods. Well, the cat is going to be out of the bag quite quickly with this one. They won't be able to go into the station tomorrow without a barrage of questions.
Your skin, your touch, the kiss, too much
Your skin, your touch, the kiss, the rush
Your skin, your touch, the kiss, too much
The rush, the rush, the rush, the rush
By the time the make out session had ended there was that rush of giddiness mixed with excitement. Never in a million years did he think that he was going to end up dating Eddie. Buck was definitely going to have to plan something as a thank you for Maddie giving them the tools to get this far. "I think Chimney is staring at us. I feel certain that he saw us kiss," Buck says. Most of the people around them didn't care. Sure it wasn't a gay nightclub but it didn't stop people who felt they were somewhere in the LGBT+ from feeling like it was a safe place to express themselves. Eddie followed where Buck was looking and saw that Chimney was in need looking at them with a shocked look on his face.
"Well I can't exactly say I wanted to keep this a secret when Maddie helped me chose a nightclub and she had to bring him along," Eddie replies. For once it wasn't something Evan could find himself being angry with. They had spent literal years dancing around each other and the whole debate they probably had in their heads thinking the other one was straight and in no way romantically interested in the other whatsoever. Evan was quite happy with the idea of being able to tell the world he was finally happy in love and that he was in love with Eddie. That kiss made him feel things he had never felt with a woman before. It was like there was a missing piece to his heart he didn't know he was missing.
They walked over to Maddie and Chimney who were grinning as the couple reached them. "Finally, I thought you two were never going to get together. I was going to text Hen tonight and tell her I changed my mind on the bet and that it was going to be twenty bucks on never happening ever," Chimney says. Of course the entire 118 and probably Carla, Karen, Maddie, Athena, Josh, Sue and many other dispatchers had a running bet going on whether or not they would date each other. There were probably a few more people but that was all of the ones they could think of at that moment. Eddie was slightly disappointed as he could picture Hen being the mastermind collecting everyone's money including Chim's $20.
"Well that is just a sign telling you that you should never take bets on best friends getting together romantically unless you are certain that it is going to happen. Could you imagine if Maddie and Eddie hadn't planned all of this and I decided that Stephanie over there was my date," Buck says. He had regained his confidence and then some. He just needed a little push or in this case a few kisses in the right direction. Stephanie was someone he had being talking to on Tinder and was actually considering asking her out on a date soon. He only hesitated as he wasn't sure if he wanted to date another girl. It clearly hadn't worked out very well for him in the past and he was a closeted bisexual.
"I take it this has gone through the group chat now and that Hen, Karen, Bobby, Athena and dispatch know now," Eddie says. If they didn't he was going to try and see if they could have at least tonight to themselves. After all this is brand new for Eddie as he had never dated another man before and Buck was also going to need some time to get used to their new normal. Well there wasn't really going to be much change, Buck spent more time at Eddie's house than his own and they were sure if they asked Christopher then he would say that he sees Buck as a second father figure in his life and would be more than happy that Buck was Eddie's new partner. There wouldn't be a repeat of the meltdown he had when he found out Eddie was dating Ana.
"No, Chim was going to tell them and I told him that it's not his place to say anything. So many things of your relationship have been out of your control so we need to give you some whilst you navigate all of this," Maddie says. For once Evan couldn't be happier that Maddie was his sister. She had a sensible head on her shoulders and he was happier knowing they could chose the time and the place. Not that there was going to be any worries about the relationship going wrong or them splitting up. They are soulmates destined to be together. Chimney seemed annoyed at that but happily handed them both the freshly opened beer bottles. He had asked for them that way as they didn't know how long it would be before the couple rejoined them.
"Thanks Maddie. I really owe you for this one," Buck replies. She just shakes her head as he brings her in for a hug. In her mind seeing that her baby brother was finally happy and with the one he loved was more than enough for her. She knows she doesn't need to have the big sister chat with Eddie and make him aware of what she would or could do to him if he broke Buck's heart. Having said that though, there was nothing stopping Bobby and Athena from giving him the parental sit down. They would probably also have to fill out paperwork with the human resources department of the Los Angeles fire department as they were sure that there was a policy for situations like this.
"Not this time Evan, seeing you finally happy in love is more than enough for me," Maddie replies. Eddie nodded, he was also thinking up of ways of thanking her for what she has done for them. Although she would probably tell him that it was all him, all she did was support him through the anxiety filled moments and give Evan an excuse as to why he needed to be here tonight so that Eddie could put his plan into action. Having failed that she would have invited them to her house and locked them in the bathroom or something until they finally confessed their love for each other. Some might consider that to be a very drastic measure, but they haven't watch their friends pining for each other for the last few years.
"If you say so," Eddie says, clinking his bottle with Buck's. A brief plan was forming in Eddie's mind of how he wanted the rest of their evening to go. They were going to spend some time on this now double date and enjoy these beers. Then he was going to invite Buck to spent the night at his house. He didn't want to wake up tomorrow without him. Otherwise he would doubt that tonight happened at all. Then tomorrow after their shift they were going to tell Christopher and start planning and preparing for Buck to move in. They can't claim it is too soon when they have acted like a married couple for years.
It was just now all official, they were boyfriends and they could progress that relationship at whatever speed made them feel comfortable and more importantly happy. "I can't wait to tell our son tomorrow. Do you think he'll be as happy as we are?" Buck asks. Eddie chuckles as Maddie made a very audible aw noise and Chim fake gagged. There was something about Buck calling Christopher our son that set off a multitude of different feelings for Eddie. Buck isn't worried he's overstepping a boundary here. He was glad that Buck finally sees what Eddie has been seeing this whole time. He was so worried that Buck wasn't going to see that he has basically been the second parent for this whole time.
They will prove just like Hen and Karen that a child doesn't need a mother and a father, just people who love them for who they are. "I bet Christopher is going to be very happy," Eddie replies. He also knows that his Tia and his Abuela would be very happy with the news. Their parents might be less supportive but they had plenty of people who support them that outweigh the amount of negativity. They don't even need to tell their parents if they don't want to. Well, Buck can easily go without speaking to his parents, but Eddie's Abuela might tell his parents when they have a phone call. It was going to be up to Eddie when he lets his Abuela know if she can pass that information along or not.
Eddie and Buck spent another hour with Chimney and Maddie and went home surprisingly still sober despite Chimney's best attempts to get them to down the beer he had bought them, so he could buy them more and get them drunk. Maddie respected their decision and was just happy she could help her brother and his boyfriend get together. The drive back to Eddie's house was quiet as they just enjoyed being in each other's company still with the slight disbelief that they were boyfriends. They have a twelve hour shift in the morning and Bobby would be the first one outside of tonight to find out so they could get that paperwork sorted and just enjoy the beginning of their relationship without stress.
When they got home they just had a cozy night in, it was still early so they didn't want to go to bed just yet. They were on the couch, Buck leaning against Eddie with the older man's arms wrapped around him. In the background, a documentary was playing but they weren't paying attention to it. They were just enjoying being in each other's company. "Hey Eds, I love you," Buck says after a minute. He was definitely getting tired, but he was trying his best to not show it. The words came surprisingly easy to him considering just a few short hours ago they were just best friends and work partners. Eddie smiled and lazily kissed Buck on the top of his curls. He could get used to this.
"I love you too Ev," he replies. Everything about this just felt right to him, he didn't need to get used to this. Buck was almost asleep when Eddie came to the realization that the couch was not going to be the most comfortable place to sleep and they should move to the bedroom. That and he needed the bathroom and he couldn't go whilst he was being his boyfriend's pillow. He didn't mind being a pillow, he was enjoying the fact that he relaxed Buck enough that he was falling asleep. He gently tried to get out from under Buck without disturbing him. He can deal with a very sleepy Buck and encourage him to go to bed with him once he had returned from the bathroom.
Buck whines clearly Eddie's plan on moving without waking the younger man had failed. "I need the bathroom babe, then we're going to bed," Eddie says. Buck mumbles something in the form of but I was comfortable and rolls over. Eddie chuckles and makes his way to the bathroom as planned. He was going to need to brush his teeth and get Evan to brush his too. It was still somehow early in the evening, it must be parenthood which sent them home early. Maddie sent him a text to let him know that herself and Chimney had made it home safely and she asked how Evan was. He replied and told her he was almost passed out asleep on the couch but he was going to make sure he was in bed.
Your skin, your touch, the kiss, the rush
He thinks back to their make out session in the club. He never felt a rush like it and he was already missing it. The sparks that flew whenever their skin touched was something he had never experienced before. By the time he was done in the bathroom he was all ready for bed. Now all he had to do was make sure Buck was awake enough to do the same. Buck was fast asleep on the couch and Eddie was not looking forward to the next part. "Buck, baby," Eddie says, gently shaking his shoulder. Buck wasn't in as deep of a sleep as he though and woke up quite readily. He was a bit groggy but seeing Eddie crouched in front of him with that affectionate look in his eyes made it worth it.
Buck got up and made his way over to the bathroom. Any concerns Eddie had about how sleepy Buck had become compared to him quickly vanished. Buck has spent his entire life with some form of guard up, he was never truly relaxed. That all changed when he first became a member of the Diaz household. Eddie never had to pretend around Buck and the same was for the other way around. Eddie stands in the door way with a big grin on his face watching his boyfriend go through his evening routine. This was the start of something incredible and Eddie was going to enjoy every second. Buck went to what was now going to be their bedroom and found a spare set of his clothes he left there.
"My god I have a hot boyfriend," Eddie can't help himself saying as Buck had gotten changed in front of him. Buck might have felt a bit cheeky and teased Eddie whilst he was taking his shirt off. He couldn't help it, this was bringing out a whole new side in him as well as a sense of renewed confidence. He kept his shirt off, turning to face Eddie who was a lot closer than he first thought. Eddie ran his hands over Buck's skin, tracing all of the scars he had earned over the years of his reckless life style. Each one telling their own story of how Buck overcame the impossible and lived to fight another day. Maybe now he has a family to live for he won't be quite as reckless as he has been previously.
"I can't believe I got to go to the home of the hottest man in the club," Buck replies. Eddie smashes his lips onto Buck's. If you were on the outside looking into this relationship this second more feisty snogging session would be seen as a bit too soon, but not for them. They had been fighting themselves for years to pluck up the courage to ask the other one out and now they were here officially boyfriends and they had a lot of lost time to make up for. They also had a child free night as Christopher was going to be at his sleepover until Carla brought him over to grab his backpack and let Eddie take him to school on the way to work in the morning. Eddie was desperate to take this to the next level.
However they knew Christopher might very well walk in on them in the morning and by the time they would be finished with what they were doing they wouldn't want to get out of bed in to put clothes on just to get back into bed again so they decided to just go to bed without their shirts on. They got into bed and Buck went straight to cuddling him. Eddie wrapped one arm around Buck who was using his chest as a pillow in that moment. His hand went immediately into the curly mop of hair on the top of Buck's head as they lay there in a comfortable silence. Eddie looked down after what seemed like forever and saw that Buck had fallen asleep under his touch. Eddie could get used to this.
Eddie was still happy the following morning when he woke up to Buck still asleep in his arms with the door opening and Christopher's voice calling for him to say they're home. He sent a quick text to Carla to say him and Buck were in the bedroom and Buck was still sleeping. Chris had quietened down but was still making his way towards them. It wasn't long before Chris climbed into their bed and Buck had finally woken up. He hadn't realized that Chris was there to begin with and kissed Eddie. "Finally," Christopher says, with a giggle. Well it was good to know they immediately had his approval. Carla was singing to herself in the kitchen as she got coffees and breakfast ready for her older Diaz boys.
Today was going to be the best day ever!
In the middle of writing this I learned that Eddie was supposed to be Maddie's love interest and she got them to change it to Chimney instead. Could you imagine if Buddie becomes canon this season? Also happy season 7 week everyone!
