Mark, Cristina, and Meredith were walking towards the dull banging noise until they saw the ripped-off wing of the plane. The noise appeared to be coming from underneath it.
As they got closer, they discovered that someone was hitting the wing with a seatbelt.
"Lexie." Mark said. It felt like someone had just stabbed him in the heart and twisted the knife around.
All three quickly made their way over to her, and Mark slid down on the floor.
"Lexie. Lexie." he called her and checked her pulse.
"How is she?" Meredith asked.
"She's awake and responsive." he replied.
"I-I knew you'd show up." Lexie said weakly, with a slight smile on her face.
"How are you doing in there?" he asked. He was scared as hell, scared to lose her, but he hid it in his voice.
"I'm-I'm great."
He could see that she wasn't.
"Yeah? Good girl. We're gonna get you outta here. ok?" he promised.
"Okay." She nodded as much as she was able to move her head.
He looked at her for a few more seconds, then got up from the ground to face Cristina and Meredith.
"She's tachycardic and short of breath." he told them, worried.
"We have to find Derek." Meredith said and looked at her best friend for approval to leave.
Cristina nodded. "Okay, you know what? We've got Lexie. So go. Go find him."
But Mark stopped her. "We-we've gotta get her outta there, Meredith." He looked at her, as if he were saying that if she left now, her sister would die, and it would be her fault.
The blonde sighed, thinking of her husband somewhere in those woods, not even knowing if he was alive or not.
"Meredith!" Mark shouted when she just stood there, doing nothing.
"A-Alright." she agreed.
Cristina sighted before turning to Mark. "Pop it back in." she instructed.
He quickly popped her shoulder back in, and she let out a pained scream before regaining her focus.
"Okay, let's do this."
The three positioned themselves at the wing, took a deep breath, and then tried to lift the thing. It was moving, but not enough.
Mark let out a frustrated scream at the fear of losing Lexie forever. He thought about how they left things and how he hadn't said anything back when she told him that she still loved him. That wasn't their ending; it wasn't supposed to be like this.
He pulled all the strength he had in his body and managed to lift the wing up just enough. "Pull her out!" he shouted. He wasn't sure how long he could hold it this way.
Cristina quickly pulled her out from underneath, knowing she wasn't holding much up anyway because of her shoulder.
"I got her!"
They let the huge piece of metal down, and Mark had to lean onto it for a brief moment.
Then, both he and Meredith kneeled down next to Lexie, where Cristina already had her running down her injuries.
"M-My legs and my left arm hurt like hell, a-and my chest feels like it's gonna explode, s-so it's probably a massive hemothorax."
"Alright, we need to get some supplies from the plane, but you're gonna be fine. I'll be right back." Cristina told her and went off.
"M-Meredith, go f-find Derek." Lexie told her big sister when she saw her pacing around nervously.
"I- I can't leave you."
"Go." Mark assured her.
Then the blonde took off in the same direction that Cristina went.
Mark started stroking Lexies hair.
"M-Mark."
"Shh. Don't talk. Cristina's gonna be back any minute, and then we'll get you stabilised. You're gonna be fine." he promised.
"Mark, I-I'm dying." she said, causing a sharp pain in his chest.
"What? No, you're not. You're not gonna die, you hear me?" He refused to even think of it. Just the thought made his stomach turn around.
"I-I am. I can feel it." she whimpered and started coughing up blood. "T-That's not good."
Mark laid down on the ground next to her and took her hand into his. 'What the hell was taking Cristina so long?'
"I love you." he said, tears forming in his eyes. He was scared it was too late, scared it wouldn't matter anymore now.
"Y-You don't have to... say it just because... I said it." Lexie whimpered.
He shook his head. "I do. I love you. I've always been in love with you. I will always be in love with you."
"Yea?"
"Yeah, which is why you have to stay alive. We-we-we're gonna get married. And you're gonna become an amazing surgeon. And we're gonna have two or three kids." he promised.
"So-So-Sofia can... have siblings." she said weakly.
"Yeah, a sister and two brothers."
"That's nice."
"And we're gonna be happy, Lex. You and me, we're gonna have the best life, Lexie. You and me, we're gonna be so happy. So you can't die. Okay?" Mark pleaded.
She tried to breathe, but it hurt so much that only a muffled sound came out.
"You can't die. Because we're supposed to end up together. We're meant to be."
"Meant to be." she repeated, then closed her eyes.
In the same moment, Cristina came back with a bunch of stuff in her hands.
"W-What happened?" she asked, scared.
Mark checked Lexie's pulse and let out a relieved breath when he felt a heartbeat. "She's alive. But we have to hurry."
"I have water and oxygen tubes from the plane." she showed him.
"T-That's good." He was shaking.
"Mark, Mark, listen, we both have to do this. For Lexie."
He took a deep breath and steadied his hands. She was right; he needed to save her.
Cristina sanitised the tube she had brought and inducted it while Mark was waiting for her pulse to drop. He was still holding her hand, and he wouldn't let go of it, even if the world was ending.
After a minute or two, he finally felt a difference. "It's working." he said, relieved.
The other doctor smiled. "We can try crafting a water drip out of those things." she suggested, holding up an IV line and a body lotion.
Normally, he wouldn't have tried it. How was that even going to work? But it was Lexie. It needed to work. He had to make it work.
"Give it to me."
She handed him the two things. He emptied the body lotion and washed it out thoroughly, then sanitised it two times, just to be sure.
He started by ripping apart the pumping part from the lid of the bottle and filling the thing up with water to which he added a pack of salt. Then he searched for a vein on Lexie's arm and inserted the IV line before connecting the two things.
"I can't believe this is working." Cristina was amazed as a wave of relief brushed over her.
Mark waited a few minutes, then checked Lexie's pulse again. "It's still a little bit elevated, but way less than before."
"Good. That's good."
"We've got to take care of her legs and her arm." he instructed.
"She said that she thinks they are broken, which means that she can still feel them, so she's not paralysed." Cristina remembered.
He shot her a look, asking her to take a look at them since his one hand was holding up the water drip and the other one was still holding hers tightly.
The female doctor nodded, then moved a few inches aside from her upper body. She ripped open her pants to get a better image of the damage and was shocked by what she saw.
Her legs were all bloody and bruised, and one bone was sticking out slightly on the right one.
"Damn it." she mumbled.
"What?" Mark asked, worried, and looked over at them.
It pained him to see her hurt like this. He should be used to those images; he was a doctor after all, but this was Lexie.
"Come over here and hold this." he instructed her.
"Mark, I can do this."
"No, I have to." he insisted. And she understood.
He had to do this himself; he couldn't let her life be in anyone else's hands, no matter how good they were.
Cristina came to the other side and took the water drip. Mark placed a kiss on Lexie's hand before he had to let go to be able to work on her.
First, he took one of the other water bottles and mixed it with a bottle of sanitizer.
He glanced over at her face. "Please, just stay unconscious."
Then, he poured the liquid over her legs to clean the wounds and determine their location.
She didn't wake up, but her body twitched from the pain.
"It's gonna be okay, Lex." he whispered.
Her left leg was obviously broken; he could tell due to the deformation, but the bone on the right one sticking out wasn't as severe as it first looked. It wasn't nearly as bad as Arizona's leg.
"I-It's okay. I can fix it, but not here. I'm just going to apply a pressure bandage to stop the bleeding, and to be safe, she should get a blood transfusion as well."
Cristina nodded as she took in everything he said.
When he finished taking care of her legs, he moved on to her arm.
After a quick examination, he did the same cleaning process as with her legs and came up with, "I can't really determine if it's only badly broken or crushed without an X-ray, but I'm going to take care of it once we get home."
"If." Cristina corrected him.
He looked at her, questioning.
"The pilot, back at the plane, said that it would take people four hours max to find us after the crash." She paused. "It's been five already. And I don't think anyone's coming soon. We're in the middle of the woods!" she exclaimed, getting upset.
As he saw her moving around, he grabbed the water drip out of her hands.
"And you, you've got some serious control issues here!" she added, starting to freak out more.
"Stop it! Cristina, you gotta focus!" he shouted.
She stopped hyperventilating and sat still. "How can you stay calm, huh? Lexie's dying right in front of you, and you can do absolutely nothing about it because we're in the freaking woods!"
"That's exactly the reason! I need to keep my focus, for her sake. I need to stay clear, and I need to keep going so she doesn't die. Don't you think I know that I'm at my limits? I know that! But I have to believe that someone's coming for us because Lexie's not going to make it for much longer if she doesn't get actual medical care!" he let out all his anger and all his pain, which he had been holding back the whole time.
Christina was in shock. Mark was usually this cocky and annoying but mostly harmless guy; she never saw him lose his temper before.
"I'm sorry." was everything she managed to get out.
They waited half an hour for the water transfusion to finish. They spent it in silence, a comforting silence.
When Mark saw the transfusion finish, he severed it from the IV line.
"You got another cannula over there?" he asked, and she threw one over to him.
"What are you doing?"
He sanitised it, inserted it in his arm, and used the tube from the lotion bottle to connect the two IV lines.
"She needs blood, so I'm gonna give it to her."
"Are you sure that you're up for that? You could be running on adrenaline and actually be dying right now." Cristina thought.
"Doesn't matter." he said as he brushed a piece of Lexie's hair out of her face.
A few minutes in, he leaned his back against the wing, feeling the dizziness get to him. Maybe he did have some injuries he didn't know about? But it didn't matter; Lexie needed this, and he wouldn't give up on her.
Suddenly, Meredith came back. "Oh god. What-What happened? Is she okay? Are you okay?"
"Yea. We stabilised her for now, but she won't make it much longer unless we get her to a hospital." Cristina told her.
Now the blonde noticed Mark. "What the hell is he doing?"
"He's giving her blood. What does it look like?" her best friend snapped. She was exhausted.
But so was Mark. He had a hard time keeping himself up against the wreck. And as he was slowly sliding to the ground, the blonde rushed to keep him up.
"That was a really bad idea. Cristina, he doesn't look well."
"I told him, but he said it didn't matter."
Meredith removed the IV line from his arm, causing him to grab onto hers. "Don't. She needs it."
The blonde wasn't going to let her sister die either, so she pushed the needle inside her own arm instead.
Then she sat down beside Mark and handed him a bottle of water. "That was very, very dumb of you."
"I couldn't let her die."
She took a look at her sister. She looked broken and hurt, but if there was one thing she could be sure of, it was that Mark Sloan would do anything to save her.
"Derek's okay. His hand is injured badly, but he's alive." she told her friends.
Mark smiled. "That's good."
"He's back at the plane with Arizona and the pilot." she added.
Suddenly, they heard a howl from not that far away. Both girls flinched.
"Wolves." Cristina figured.
"They won't come here, will they?" her best friend asked, frightened.
"We're all weak, especially Lexie and Arizona. We're easy-to-catch food." she replied coldly.
The blonde gulped. "We-We've gotta take Lexie to the plane and get inside of it for the night."
"We can't move her, Meredith." Mark cut in.
"But what do we do, then?" She felt so helpless in that moment.
"We need a fire. It'll keep them away." he instructed, regaining a clear head.
