Chapter 1

Death of Molly McGee

Today was another day of enhappifying everyone in Brighton for Molly McGee! She had spent the entire day participating in a ribbon cutting celebration and a parade. As fun as today was, Molly wanted nothing more than to spend the day with her friends.

While Scratch kept disappearing and leaving her alone, Libby was helping out her mom at the bookshop. It made Molly wish that she could spend the day with her two friends. The last time that all three of them spent time together was during the night of the comet. It was a moment that Molly would never forget. She remembered how beautiful Libby looked under the night sky.

After all the time she and Libby spent as best friends, Molly had developed a crush on Libby and wanted nothing more than to tell her how she felt. Unfortunately, Molly was too nervous to express her feelings that night. She was sure that there was always next time and decided not to think about it too much since she had to get back to enhappifying everyone.

Little did Molly know that Scratch was spending all day trying to distract a joy hunter named, Jinx, who was sent by the Ghost Council to eliminate Molly because of all the joy she was spreading in Brighton. After several close calls, he eventually managed to get Jinx to return to the Ghost World, much to his relief.

Relieved that he was finally able to get Jinx to leave, Scratch decided to spend the rest of the day with Molly, like she wanted. He was about to get some ice cream with Molly before Jinx suddenly showed up once again.

"Sorry, one thing is still bothering me, Scratch." Jinx said, startling Scratch.

"Jinx! I thought we- thought we cleared the whole thing up!" Scratch was surprised to see Jinx back.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. But if your not creating misery, I get why the numbers are going down, but what I don't get is why are the numbers going up?" Jinx soon got her answer, when she took notice of Molly, who continued to spread joy to others. "Aha! Well, here we go! It's this human girl, Molly McGee!"

It was at that point when Scratch started to panic. If he didn't think of something fast, Jinx would find out that he has been friends with a human this whole time.

"Who? I'm sorry I-I don't know what a Molly McGoo is!" Scratch pretended to know nothing about Molly.

"Hey, who wants sprinkles?" Molly asked, to which everyone cheered in joy.

"Oh, Molly McGee! Uh, well, you know what? No need to take up any more of your time! I'm just gonna- I'll take care of it from here!"

Before Scratch could warn Molly about the joy hunter after her, Jinx stopped him at the last second. "Ah, no no! Joy hunter. That's why I'm here! To find the joy and eliminate it permanently!"

Scratch was soon horrified to see Jinx summoning a scythe with a sadistic grin. "Eliminate joy? You mean eliminate Molly?"

"Unless you've got a reason why I shouldn't." Jinx stared at Scratch in suspicion, to which he remained silent, not sure what to do. "Okay, cool! Back in a jiff!"

With that, Jinx rushed towards Molly, scythe in hand. Scratch couldn't let Jinx hurt Molly, so he rushed after Jinx in an effort to save his best friend. It was too late though as Jinx already reached Molly. With one quick slash of her scythe, Jinx slashed Molly across the chest, causing her to fall to the ground.

Horrified by what he saw, Scratch flew over to Molly's side. Molly's body laid on the ground, motionless in a pool of blood. This had to be a nightmare! Scratch didn't want to believe that Molly, his best friend just got killed. Unfortunately, no matter how much he wanted to deny it, he had to accept the truth that Molly was dead.

"Well, that takes care of that!" Jinx said with no remorse for what she has done. "I'll let the Ghost Council know that I dealt with their little joy problem!"

With that, Jinx summoned a portal and flew back into the Ghost World, leaving Scratch alone with Molly's corpse. Suddenly, screams filled the silence as everyone began to notice Molly's dead body. Everyone was horrified to see that the girl who had done so much for them since she arrived in Brighton was now gone forever. No one was more upset about Molly's death than Scratch. He embraced Molly's body in his ghost arms as he cried over Molly's death until he heard a familiar voice.

"Scratch? What just happened?"

Shocked, Scratch turned towards where the voice came from and his eyes widened upon what he saw. "Molly?"

Meanwhile at the McGee's household, Pete, Sharon, and Darryl were relaxing at home, none of them aware of the tragedy of what happened to Molly. Their peace and quiet was soon interrupted when Scratch suddenly appeared in front of them, startling everyone.

"Scratch? What are you doing here?" Sharon asked. "We thought you were with Molly."

"Yeah, about that." Scratch tried to think of a way to explain what happened to Molly without worrying the family. "Let's just say that something unexpected happened to Molly."

"Something happened to Molly?!" Pete started to worry. "Is she okay?"

It was at that point when the McGees started to fear that something bad might have happened to Molly. Not wanting the family to worry even more, Scratch decided to tell them the truth.

"I think it might be easier if I just show you what happened. Just promise not to freak out! You can come out, Moll!" Scratch called out.

At that moment, a golden colored ghost appeared right next to Scratch. This new ghost stared at everyone with pink color-eyes and greeted everyone with a smile.

"Um, hi, guys." The ghost spoke in an all too familiar voice.

"Wait, Molly? Is that you?" Darryl stepped forward, surprised to see his sister in her ghost-like appearance.

Seeing there daughter as a ghost was too much for Pete and Sharon to take in. Today was just supposed to be another happy day for Molly, but now her life came to a sudden end.

"Scratch, what happened to her?!" Pete asked.

"Don't be mad at Scratch, Dad! It's not his fault! I'm still trying to understand this myself!" Molly explained. "From what Scratch told me, I kind of ended up getting killed by this ghost named, Jinx."

Hearing this enraged Sharon as she wanted nothing more than to strangle this Jinx ghost. "Where is this Jinx?! I'm going to make her pay for what she did to you!"

"That won't do you any good, Sharon. Jinx is long gone by now." said Scratch.

"Mom, please calm down. I'm still here." Molly tried to assure her mom.

It took a moment for Sharon to calm down as she gazed at her daughter with tears in her eyes. "Molly, I'm so sorry! I should have been there to look after you! You had your whole life ahead of you!"

Seeing Molly's family so upset broke Molly's heart. She tried to think of something to say to cheer up her family, but couldn't say a word when the phone started to ring.

Pete picked up the phone before he spoke into it. "H-Hello?" Everyone remained silent, wondering who Pete was talking to. "Y-Yes we already know what happened to Molly." Pete stuttered, still trying to process what happened. "We are all devastated by the news. Yes, we'll be there soon. Thank you. Bye." After hanging up the phone, Pete brought his attention back to his family. "That was the mayor. He called to tell us about what happened to Molly. There is already an ambulance coming to pick her up, so we should be there too."

"Um, about that I think I should stay behind." Molly said, much to the surprise of her family. "I still need to let Libby know what happened too."

Truthfully, the McGees still didn't feel comfortable with leaving Molly behind. They just found out that Molly died, and they didn't want to leave her behind.

"Hey, I promise I'm going to be fine!" Molly assured. "After all I have Scratch with me."

"That's not a very reassuring thought. Scratch wasn't able to protect you last time." Pete pointed out.

"Yeah, I hate to admit it, but I kind of agree with Dad. I mean you literally turned into a ghost just today." Darryl explained.

"I'm sorry. I have to let Libby know. She is important to me."

It was at that point when the McGees knew that no matter what they would say, Molly has already made her decision. As much as she didn't want to do this, Sharon decided to respect Molly's wishes.

"Okay. Just come back to us safely, and we love you, Molly." said Sharon.

"I love you guys too!" Molly smiled before she and her family embraced each other in a group hug.

Meanwhile at Book Marks the Spot, Libby had just finished up helping her mom when she sat at a table, reading a romance novel. She just finished reading the last chapter, where the main characters ended up getting together. After closing the book, Libby let out a dreamy sigh. Upon noticing the loving look on her daughter's face, Leah knew exactly who Libby was thinking of.

"Did enjoy enjoy that book, Libby?" Leah asked.

Libby nodded. "Yeah, Mom! It is just such a beautiful romance novel!"

"Oh, I agree! You know, the main characters of the novel remind me of you and Molly! Maybe someday you and Molly can be together too!" Leah replied.

Libby's face turned red in response. "Mom! I already told you! Molly and I are just friends!" Libby lied, despite her obvious crush on her best friend.

"Okay! I was just kidding!" Leah chuckled.

After Leah was done with working around the bookshop, she decided to spend some time with her daughter as the two of them decided to watch TV. At that moment, Leah turned on the TV as it switched to the news channel.

"Today is a tragic day for Brighton." the news reporter announced. "Earlier today, town enhappifier, Molly McGee was found dead from an unknown cause of death."

Libby felt a chill run down her spine the moment she heard the news report. She could have sworn that she heard that Molly just died, but it couldn't be! Maybe she just misheard the name! Libby tried to convince herself that Molly is perfectly fine and the two of them would see each other again tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Libby's fear ended up being true when the TV focused on Molly's family, each of them mourning as they surrounded Molly's covered up body on a stretcher. Even though the McGees knew that they could still be with Molly's spirit, it was still too much for them to bear to see Molly dead. Unlike the McGees though, Libby wasn't aware of Molly's ghost and as far as she knew, Molly was gone forever.

"The cause of Molly's death is unknown, almost as if caused by paranormal activity." The reporter continued. "Even though Molly is gone, we shall never forget all she has done for all of Brighton."

Horrified by what she heard, Leah immediately turned off the TV. She brought her attention to Libby, who was still trying to process what she just learned. Deep down, Leah wanted to say anything at all to make Libby feel better, but what could she possibly say? After all, Libby just learned that her best friend just died. In an effort to comfort Libby, Leah placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Libby, I-"

Before Leah could say another word, Libby stood up and ran to her room in tears. Devastated by the loss of her best friend, Libby collapsed on her bed, crying in her pillow. Memories of her friendship with Molly came flooding back to her. The memories that used to make her so happy now makes her miserable now that she can no longer see Molly again. What hurts the most is that Libby never got to confess her love for Molly.

After several hours of crying, Libby felt a hand on her shoulder. Thinking that her mom came back to comfort her, Libby was about to say that she wanted to be alone, but something didn't feel right to her. This hand felt weirdly tiny compared to her mom's and had a ghost-like feel to it. Startled, Libby stood up from her bed and was surprised to see a golden colored ghost. It took a moment before Libby realized who she was looking at.

"M-Molly? Is that you?" Libby asked.

The ghost nodded. "Hi, Libby! I know that it must feel kind of weird seeing me like this. I guess I have a lot of explaining to do."

Before Molly could say another word, Libby hugged Molly's ghost form in tears. It was at that moment when Molly wrapped her ghost arms around Libby as she tried to cheer up her best friend.

"Oh, Molly! I thought I was never going to see you again!" Libby cried.

"Somehow, I knew that Libby would react this way." Scratch commented as he floated in Libby's room as well.

Soon, Molly and Libby broke from the hug as Libby stared at Molly in tears. With a smile, Molly placed a hand on Libby's cheek before wiping away a tear.

"It's okay, Libby! I'm here now!" Molly assured.

"I still can't believe that you're gone." Libby sniffed. "You didn't deserve something like this to happen to you."

Despite what happened to her, Molly still managed a smile. "Hey, I know that I died, but I still had a wonderful life without any regrets. Well, maybe except for one. The only thing I regret was not telling you how much I love you. I have always had a crush on you, but I was too scared to admit it."

Libby couldn't believe what she just heard. After all the time she and Molly spent together, she never would have guessed that Molly felt the same way about her.

"Y-You have a crush on me?" Libby asked, surprised.

"Of course! I love you, Libby! I've always loved you!" Molly confessed.

At that moment, Libby wiped the rest of the tears from her eyes before giving Molly a smile for the first time today. "If I'm being honest, I've always loved you too, Molly. Looks like not telling you is something that I regret too."

This time, it was Molly's turn to be surprised. She remained silent for a moment before she thought of an idea.

"Well, maybe we still have a chance. We can still be girlfriends if you like."

"Really?" Libby perked up at the sound of that idea. "I would love to be your girlfriend, Molly!"

Tears of joy soon formed in Molly's eyes as she couldn't believe this was happening. This all felt like a dream to her. Ever since she and Libby became best friends, she hoped that some day they could become something more and that day is today! The two friends soon embraced each other in a hug before kissing each other on the lips, sharing their first kiss.

With Molly now a ghost, this was not how Libby imagined her first kiss being like, but she didn't care. She was just happy that she and Molly were now officially girlfriends! Even Scratch couldn't help but smile from how happy his two friends were.

"Looks like you two would want some privacy, so I'll just leave you alone for now." Scratch said as he left the room.

Despite how awful today started out, this ended up being the best day of Molly and Libby's lives. Even though her life just ended, Molly knew that she can now find a new beginning in her afterlife.
