Stefan laid on the cot in the cellar cell. The cold turkey from human blood was causing him side effects of sweating and flashing back to memories of old times.
The current memory was of 1864 the night they rounded up the vampires. He and Damon was stood hiding in the bushes watching as they tossed a young man in the back of the carriage to take to the church.
"Get him in, we have to get to the church they are waiting,"
"Go around that way I'll distract them," Stefan pushed his brother by the left shoulder to go as he came up with the plan.
"Over here there's another one," he called out to get the mob away from the carriage.
"Quick help me!," he said as he started running into the woods.
The mob followed him all except one man to guard the carriage.
Damon came around punching him, knocking him out before taking the keys from his pocket.
Stefan had circled back coming up behind Damon as he unlocked the carriage.
"We don't have long," Stefan said as they opened the door and saw Katherine laying on the floor of the carriage.
"Katherine," Damon spoke as he and Stefan together lifted her out of the carriage.
Laying her on the ground he worked on removing the head guard they had placed on all vampires.
After getting it off they began untying her hands when they heard the neigh of the horse rider returning.
"Damon hurry, hurry."
Suddenly there was a gunshot and Damon was thrown backwards by the force.
"No!," Stefan jumped up rushing to his brother's side.
"Damon," he called out as he watched his brother die in his arms.
Standing Stefan walked over picking up the rifle from the ground ready to lift it and shoot, he instead was shot too by the returning mob.
As Stefan faded in and out of conscious he couldn't tell the difference between then and now. He saw his brother and Elena in the present time but the images he saw and the words Elena spoke appeared as if they came from Katherine.
Damon led Elena out of the cell and closed the door behind him as Stefan kept seeing 1864 and them re closing the carriage door after putting Katherine back inside leaving himself and Damon where they laid on the ground.
Elena wouldn't leave the cellar she acted like she cared about Stefan but Eliza knew better. She had arrived around mid day two days later and gave Damon a vial of elemental medicine to help with the hallucinations.
Damon knew she wouldn't stay and after hugging her tight he walked her out to her car where Jackie and Jeremy waited to go on a road trip.
He knew those trips were important and so he just kissed her forehead and wished her a safe trip.
Eliza smiled loving this side of Damon he was really working on repairing everything between them.
He had even taken her to the storage unit to collect her belongings the day after the funeral. She was so grateful to have everything back from pictures to all the old clothes.
Of course she was so done with corsets but she loved the symbolism behind having everything back.
Downstairs Damon returned as Elena stared through the bars of the cell again.
"It's so hard to see him locked up like this,"
"You're the one who locked him up,"
"You helped,"
"I couldn't have him running around chewing on people while the town was looking for vampires now could I,"
"It had nothing to do with you caring about him,"
"Your thing not mine," Damon replied nonchalant as he turned to leave the cellar.
Elena took one last look at Stefan before following him out.
Neither had realized Stefan had awoken and was somewhat focused now on things. Though when he closed his eyes the memories continued.
When he opened his eyes again he was sat on the floor of a abandoned place. Alive somehow but with the blood stain clearly marking where he had been shot.
Ripping open his shirt he touched his now unmarred skin before noticing the ring on his finger.
"Katherine had me make that for you weeks ago," came the voice of Emily, Katherine's hand maiden from beside him.
"Where am I?,"
"The quarry, just north of town. My brother and I brought you here last night. We found you dead in the woods,"
"Where's Damon?," silently she gestured behind him.
Turning Stefan saw his brother shirtless sitting next to the water.
"Am I?,"
"Not yet, you're in transition,"
"But how I didn't,"
"You had Katherine's blood in your system when you died,"
"No I never,"
"She's been compelling you to drink it for weeks Stefan,"
"And Damon?,"
"No compulsion was necessary he drank from her willingly," she explained as Stefan looked still in disbelief.
Slowly he made his way out over to his brother who spoke without looking up at him.
"Woke up last night didn't know where I was, I went to the church and I watched them drag her inside, then they set fire to it. Then the whole church went up into flames, they killed her Stefan," he said finally turning his head to look at his brother.
"I've now lost both Elizabeth and Katherine," he said so dejected.
In present time upstairs Damon stood in front of the table studying the compass in his hand as Elena puttered around behind him.
"Did you ever figure out what that is?,"
"Nope, whatever it is doesn't work,"
"Pearl didn't say anything else about it?,"
"She thought she was stealing his vampire compass but that was a pocket watch. that Jonathon Gilbert was a crazy scientist. Have you spoke to your uncle lately?,"
"I've been avoiding him actually, that and I've been here most nights, maybe Jeremy?,"
"Nope been with Eliza and they left for a road trip. So I guess you will be here again tonight?,"
"Is that a problem?,"
"Yes you're a complete nuisance,"
"I'll see you later," Elena laughed as she grabbed her bag and head out.
Taking the chance Damon went downstairs with the vial Eliza gave him and set it up in the needle before entering the cell.
"This is from our dear one," Damon said as he injected Stefan in the arm.
Stefan didn't fight he knew Damon meant Eliza and would trust anything by her. It was working whatever it was Stefan felt lighter as if it was all numbed down it made it somewhat more bearable.
