The days passed quickly, so quickly that Luz almost didn't notice. Since Amity had become her girlfriend she had completely lost track of time, space and even reality; it was as if the image of the lavender-haired girl had glued itself to her wooden brain and her mind flatly refused to think anything else. Every time they saw each other even just fleetingly they immediately started showering each other with kisses, and Luz believed that there was no thing in the world sweeter than Amity's lips; every time, it felt like she was kissing a person made of cotton candy... which maybe wasn't too far from reality since that was what she looked like due to her beautiful hair. By now it had become a challenge to be able to separate at least to follow lessons at school, and it normally took twenty minutes to them to say goodbye to go home. Their friends had complained about it a couple of times, but it was stronger than them: it was as if their bodies refused to move away and continued to attract each other like two magnets, and even if in the end the mind won and forced them to leave each in her own way, it was still a titanic undertaking to achieve it.

This relationship had clearly influenced Luz and Amity's lifestyle: the two of them now spent much more time alone, and even when they were with their friends they were practically inseparable and often ended up forgetting the presence of others and started making out. Not that their friends minded that: on the contrary, they almost seemed to be rooting for them, and although Luz wasn't sure, she was pretty sure that Boscha had opened a secret betting ring where they bet on how long she and Amity would be able to hold back before jumping on each other. They were glad that they were so happy, and as Hooty continually said whenever Amity accompanied Luz to the Owl House, 'they were adorable and deserved all the happiness'.

Luz actually felt a little guilty when she couldn't resist and started kissing Amity in front of her friends, or rather, in front of Willow; even if she didn't say it, in fact, she knew that she had been very hurt by Hunter's refusal. After all, she had wanted a serious relationship with the boy for a long time, and being rejected certainly couldn't have been nice. Luz could imagine how upset Willow felt when she saw her and Amity kissing; even though she wasn't a jealous person, and in fact she had never scolded Luz or tried to separate them but rather had always been happy for them, it was inevitable that seeing her friends in such intimate attitudes made her remember that she would have liked to be in their place with a certain blonde monster hunter. Because of this, Luz tried to hold back as much as possible while Willow was around, only enjoying her girlfriend's company when she was gone; and Amity did the same too. After all, they were still her friends, and they couldn't put all their happiness before hers.

Luz felt very bad for Willow; she had no idea what it meant to be rejected, but just the thought of Amity saying 'no' to her that day at the beach made her heart ache. She would have gladly wanted to scold Hunter, but she knew she couldn't: the blond boy hadn't done anything wrong after all, in fact he had behaved impeccably. It certainly wasn't his fault if he didn't reciprocate Willow's feelings, and of course they couldn't force him to do so. Luz had found a little strange that Hunter had rejected Willow, since the two of them seemed to fit so well together, and so did all of her friends… but ultimately, it was likely that they were just misreading the signals. Hunter had always been an enigma at heart, and his behavior was often different compared to that of other kids of his age; they had probably mistaken for loving signals what for him were nothing more than simple daily gestures. Everyone had accepted that they had made a mistake... except Gus, who was strangely silent when this conversation came up, and seemed worried about something. A couple of times Luz had seen him try to talk to Hunter in private, but the blond boy had always refused. She wondered what she wanted to tell him that was so important, and why Hunter didn't want to talk about it, but when she tried to ask Gus he told her it was a personal matter and so she didn't investigate further.

Aside from the pain of Hunter's rejection, however, Willow remained the same: playful, smiling, wise and somewhat stern whenever Luz didn't behave; in short, a sort of big sister. She hadn't even distanced herself from Hunter, and in fact she welcomed him warmly every time they met him; rather, it was he who, out of respect for her, tried to avoid interacting too much with her, perhaps fearing that this would hurt her, but she didn't seem to care and always invited him to join her and their friends. That was the most beautiful side of Willow: she didn't hold a grudge against anyone, if that someone either regretted their actions or simply, as in Hunter's case, had no fault. Everyone loved her for it after all. Instead of despairing, Willow now seemed to be intent on fully enjoying life as a human being, and therefore in addition to the sea she and the others had already gone to bathe in the river, or to play with water balloons, or to do a lot of things that she couldn't do when she was a cricket. It was the same for Gus too and he absolutely wanted to try all those things that humans did and that he had carefully studied for all those years. Even if they had already had some of those experiences thanks to Eda's magic, now that they were totally human it was a completely different thing: it was truly extraordinary to feel their lungs filling with air when they ran, or not to feel every single movement of their exoskeleton.

In short, they wanted to try a lot of new activities, and obviously their friends were happy to oblige them; and so, among a thousand games and experiences, days followed one another and weeks passed, until the day came when Luz, while sitting between Amity's legs while the latter rubbed her wooden hair, asked: "Amity, you're only a week away from awakening your magic, right?"

Amity bit her lip. "Well… nine days actually" she admitted.

"Wow... we've had so much fun these days that time has really flown by" Luz murmured. Amity's lips apparently had some strange magic built into them that caused anyone who touched them to lose the flow of time. Or maybe it was simply Luz who too often forgot to look at the calendar or count the days until important deadlines. "Are you worried?"

Amity shook her head proudly. "No, not at all. Mom gave me a lot of private lessons. I'm sure I can do it!" she said confidently. "And once I'm a full-fledged witch, I'll be able to do a lot of things! Mom taught me a lot of spells!"

"You'll have to show them all to us!" Gus said excitedly. "I'm really curious to see what you can do!"

"Come on, guys, don't pressure her" Willow told them, even though her expression betrayed a completely different thought: "But yes, you'll have to show them all to us"

"I definitely will, guys" Amity told them. "Trust me, I've already memorized all the steps to the most basic spells, so as soon as I have some magic of my own I can use them"

"You will be able to shoot fireballs, right?" Boscha asked her with shining eyes.

Amity nodded. "Yes, I will be able to do it"

"Well, then I have to prepare a good target for you! There will also be a mannequin that no one needs anywhere. Do you mind if I stick a drawing of the face of some professor I particularly hate on it?" Boscha asked her, resulting in everyone laughing.

"Oh, I want to do this too!" Matt exclaimed. "There are a few individuals who really annoy me, it would be marvelous"

"I'd like that too" Skara admitted. "But... maybe we should use something less dangerous than fire. I don't want to burn a forest"

"No way! It's nice because there's fire! Hitting those idiots' pictures and watching them burn will be extremely deliberative" Boscha protested.

"Why are you so obsessed with fire?" Skara asked her raising an eyebrow, even though she was clearly pretending.

"Do you have to ask?" Willow told her. "It's Boscha, she has fire inside. It's obvious she likes it, it's her element"

"Thanks for the clarification, cricket" Boscha winked with a smile.

Willow frowned. "Will you never stop calling me that!?" she snapped, then she smiled proudly back: "You should call me 'captain'. I'm still the leader of the team"

Boscha frowned too. "Only because we haven't been able to play a decisive match yet!"

"Maybe. But in the meantime I'm the captain and you're not!" Willow grinned back at her.

The two girls immediately started arguing, while their friends did nothing but laugh at their childish argument. Boscha and Willow had become quite close to each other, since they both shared a passion for sports, and even if they both denied it it couldn't be said that they weren't friends, even if that friendship seemed like that between a cat and a mouse. Their friends knew this and in fact did absolutely nothing to stop them, and in fact after less than two minutes both girls were back on excellent terms. "Anyway, Skara, now you have your answer" Boscha said to her girlfriend as soon as that very brief argument was over, and she said it to her while scratching her neck with one hand as if she were a cat.

Skara blushed slightly and almost purred, and only the fact that they were in front of other people held her back. "S-Stop it! I don't like it!" she tried to say, although the tone that came out of her mouth was rather shrill.

"Oh, honey... you should have learned by now not to tell lies" Boscha told her, scratching her neck even more and bringing her face closer to hers, resulting in Skara's face turning into an oven. "You know I always get the truth out of you. Say it, you like it, right?"

Skara could not object. "Y-Yes" she admitted.

"Good girl" Boscha told her, then she picked her up and sat her on her lap and actually started treating her like she was a cat, with the result that within five seconds Skara was actually rubbing herself on her chest like she was a feline.

"Wow, you two are progressing well in your relationship. Aren't you rushing a little too far?" Amity asked them.

"Says the one who has a certain puppet sitting between her legs that's so close to you that it looks like she wants to merge with you" Boscha told her back, and Amity couldn't blame her in the slightest.

Luz giggled, tickling Amity (and thus demonstrating how close their bodies were and consequently confirming Boscha's words), then she returned to the original speech: "Well, in any case, Amity, I'm glad you have more now confidence in yourself"

"I've been training, and I'm sure I can handle the magical balance perfectly" Amity replied with a proud smile. "I won't become a dark witch. I'll just be your witch girlfriend who will entertain you with magic tricks, and who will protect you if any other bad guys get close to you!"

Luz planted a kiss on her lips. "Well then, protect your Luz well!" she told her, imitating the words Amity had used when she defended her from her mother.

"Ha ha! Of course, I'll be your shield for life!" Amity responded by grabbing her cheeks and kissing her hard.

"Look at them, and then they have the nerve to tell us that we should hold back" Boscha grumbled amusedly.

"Boscha, you're literally rubbing Skara's belly" Amity pointed out, pointing to their friend who was now smoking on her cheeks from how red she was turning, but despite that she wasn't moving an inch from her position.

"Yeah, that's right!" Luz exclaimed. "I'm offended! Why don't you rub me, huh, Amity?"

"Seriously? Would you like that?" Amity responded by starting to tickle her all over her body.

"Ha ha! No... ha ha! Please, stop! I'm sorry! Ha ha ha!" Luz screamed, her eyes watering, and she tried to free herself, resulting in the two girls rolling onto the floor on top of each other. Needless to say, within half a minute their mouths were glued together again.

"Seriously, sometimes I wonder how they can breathe" Gus commented looking at them, and that question wasn't entirely unfounded, given that their faces were constantly stuck together, blocking any respiratory orifice.

"I think they've developed the ability to collect air with their ears" Willow replied with a giggle.

"We can hear you" Luz grumbled. "Anyway, Amity, remember that you promised to show me in a witch's dress! In fact, we should go find you one right away!"

Amity blushed. "No, Luz, there's no need..."

"Of course there is a need! If in nine days you are going to become a witch you will have to have the right clothing!" Luz told her. "Doesn't your mother have witch clothes?"

Amity shook her head. "She has some that she kept hidden, that she sewed herself and that are full of magical spells. But she created them all when she was already an adult, as a young girl she didn't want to risk someone discovering them and understanding that she was a witch. There's not even one my size"

"Well, then we have to get them from somewhere else!" Luz said pounding her fist into her palm. "Does anyone have any ideas?"

"I'd rule out asking Eda and Lilith. I doubt they have any witch stuff" Gus said, then he seemed to have an idea: "But we could ask Raine. They have traveled the world and have a tent full of relics, maybe they have something suitable for a witch"

"Yeah, and besides, we haven't been to see them in a while. It would be a good excuse to go and say hello" Willow said.

"It's not a bad idea" Luz admitted. Although she saw Raine at least once a week since they came to visit them at the Owl House, they hadn't visited them at the BATTs' camp more than a couple of times after the battle against the Titan Trappers. Raine hadn't blamed them: after all, even if they had won that place shouldn't have evoked good memories in them. But it would still be nice to come to them every now and then. "Okay! Come on, let's go to Raine!"

"Guys, seriously, you don't have to bother yourselves" Amity told them, though she was pleased by their apprehension.

"Nonsense! I would be a really bad girlfriend if I let you become a witch without a witch's outfit!" Luz answered her. "How do you think the bad guys you have to protect me from will react?"

"Pff! Ha ha ha! I'll protect you even dressed in rags, Luz!" Amity laughed. "Okay, you win. Let's go to Raine and look for this witch's dress"

Luz was glad that Amity let herself be persuaded, but she raised an eyebrow anyway. That last laugh had seemed strange to her. And it wasn't the first time: lately she had often heard Amity laughing strangely, and often in contexts that normally didn't make her laugh at all, but which she still seemed to find funny. She had wondered if it was normal, but after all Amity had remained the same as always, so it was probably all just a figment of her imagination.

Hooty's phrase, although I don't think there is any need to specify, is the same one he says at the end of episode 8 of the second season, when Luz and Amity finally become a couple
