Disclaimer: Time to see how Chase handles his very first rescue in Adventure City! And the aftermath of that. I hope things like Liberty's arc of wanting to have friends without fear of scaring them off, along with the additional roles of Skye and Marshall, are welcome additions to the movie's story. Anyway, onto part three!

Also, I don't own Paw Patrol.

Paw Patrol X: What Makes A Hero

Part Three: First City Rescue

Chase and the rest of the Paw Patrol who were still at HQ were now being shown the system Ryder made for their vehicles. After they got out of the elevator, they all walked up to a platform and looked down as a hatch opened up. Up rose Chase's police cruiser, which like his suit, got a noticeable upgrade for the city. "Chase, this, is your new car! It's a lot like your old one, but it's got much greater defense than the last one, while staying at the exact same speed.

The Paw Patrol were amazed, and Chase only had one word to express how much he loved it. "Awesome!" Then, a slide opened up for Chase to use to get into the car with style. Chase howled as he jumped onto the slide and went down, and the others joined him in the howling before he arrived in his seat. The sunroof opened just in time with Chase sitting comfortably in his chair as all of the buttons lit up. After they did, he looked into the rear view mirror and got a good look at himself. His smile showed that as always, he looked stunning.

Chase then pressed the gas pedal a bit to get a good revving in before the big door in front of him opened up. He couldn't get enough of just how great the car sounded now. "Oh! I could get used to this!"

"You'd better hang onto your hat." Ryder advised, and Chase gave a thumbs up before looking ahead confidently with his hat tucked on tight.

Just then, a voice modified into the tower started announcing Chase's launch. "Chase! Ready for launch in five... four... three... two..." Chase was getting more and more pumped with every second, putting his paw on the gas pedal just before the last second hit. "One... go!" Once the light changed from red to green, Chase put the car into drive mode and accelerated.

Chase drove down a big ramp that led the team's vehicles into town and cheered as he felt the rush. "That's what I'm talking about!"

Marshall was getting a good feel of his newly upgraded fire truck before the voice called his name too. "Marshall! Go!" Marshall drove down the ramp as well, making sure to go at a stable speed while catching up to Chase.

Skye was then getting ready in her helicopter, which rose up to a higher floor with a helipad. "Skye! Ready for launch!"

Skye looked down at four switches, flipping the second, third, and fourth ones to get her helicopter revving up. The boosters started, and Skye got a kick for the feel of it. "Skye is go for launch!"

"Go!" Skye moved the lever forward and launched as soon as the command came up.

As Skye flew off, she was quick to praise just how good her new helicopter felt. "Whoa! That's got a kick to it!" After flying around the city for a few seconds, she revealed a red button and pressed it, changing her engines out for helicopter propellers.

After Skye caught up with the others, Chase joined her in some flirting. "The only thing that didn't get an upgrade, is the beautiful dog inside of it who's always perfect."

Skye giggled a bit before responding to Chase's flirting with love. "Oh you."

Then, Ryder, along with the others, took a sharp turn to get to the City Hall in time as Ryder started his call out. "Paw Patrol, is on a rooooo-" However, they were met with a big pit of traffic that Liberty warned them about. "are you kidding me!?" Ryder took off his helmet as everyone kept honking in the area. "This must be the traffic Liberty warned us about."

"Green means go!" Rocky shouted in annoyance, pointing out how the light was obviously green. "Are you all colorblind or something!? Green means go!" He then looked over to Marshall, was was right next to him after he said that. "Green does still mean go, right?"

"Not sure. I'll have to stop and think." Marshall chimed in, leaving Rocky to roll his eyes.

And as always, the rest of the pups were quick to call Marshall out on his puns. "Marshall!"

As the rest of the team laughed, Wave and Liberty started hopping on the cars and running over to the team from them. "You're taking Main Street at rush hour!?" Upon seeing her, Chase decided to talk to her about his words after the mission. Liberty then gave a smile as she commented on how obvious of a trap this was. "No wonder you're stuck in traffic!" Wave and Liberty hopped onto Ryder's ATV with Marshall tossing Wave something to call her truck with. Ryder gave it to him on the elevator. "At this point, Charm will save everyone before we even get there!"

As Wave called for her truck, she asked how Liberty was able to handle the constant honking. "Hey Liberty. How are you okay with these cars honking all over the place?"

"Believe it or not, I've always been okay around honking cars." Liberty admitted, and then Wave's truck arrived with her loving the way it looked now. She rushed over to it while also spotting a hard drive in the side dash Ryder gave a note to open. It was one for her Pup-Tag, and she put it in. As she did all of this, Liberty told Ryder what she needed right now. "What your team needs is a pup like me. Not to brag, but I know the city like the back of my paw." Liberty then held the back of her paw up to make her point. "I know it really well is what I mean."

Ryder chuckled a bit at Liberty's confirmation as the Dachshund then stated all she knew in terms of directions. "Uptown, downtown, crosstown, midtown! 24/7, 365! I'll get you where you need to be."

Ryder wasn't against Liberty wanting to help. In fact, she was right about them needing her. "Well we could use some help getting out of this traffic jam."

"That's what I'm talking about! My first assignment!" Liberty exclaimed, going over to another driver and putting her city girl persona into high gear. "Outta the way dude! Move! Move! Move!"

Wave smirked as she pointed out how Liberty admitted to her fear of scaring others. "Funny. You had no problems scaring HIM off."

"Three years in the city helps me know how to talk to the people here. He'll understand." Liberty explained, and then she started directing the Paw Patrol on how to get to City Square. "Now go!"

As Ryder and the others got onto the sidewalk, Snow took the time to address what she was doing to the camera. "Hey. They always say rules are made to be broken."

Then, Liberty directed the Paw Patrol on where to go to reach City Hall quickly. "Turn here!" The team all turned into a parking lot with multiple stories, most likely for a mall. When they reached the exit, Liberty called again. "Left!" Then, Liberty made three fast calls to keep the team on the right track. "Right, then right again, right away!" Ryder was able to handle the fast turns, thankfully keeping the speed from before without much risk.

The Paw Patrol continued their way down another alleyway as Liberty spoke to Ryder about her job well done. "Ha ha, ya see that!? I'm like a furry GPS!" She then looked back and her eyes widened before she gave her next command. "AH; turn left!"

Ryder turned left quickly, and Snow then gave a sly grin with her own addition to that claim once they got back to the road. "A furry GPS that needs to watch the road." Liberty chuckled a bit, making sure to take Snow's snarky comment to heart.

Just then, the team drove through what looked to be rogue firework smoke. Once they stopped, Liberty finished her GPS role. "You have reached your destination."

Surely enough, the fireworks were still going off. And Ryder was ready to get into action. "Now we know what happens when you give Humdinger fireworks."

Humdinger saw what was going on, and because he's a narcissistic loser, he was not happy to see them here to save the day. "The Paw Patrol!?" He threw his top hat to the ground as he complained about their presence. "What are they doing in Adventure City!?"

Charm ran up to Ryder with an update on the situation. "Ryder! I managed to save at least eight people from the fireworks! But that's all I could fit since these shields were intended for dogs." Charm pointed to his shield, which had eight humans being somewhat cramped, but not to the point of uncomfortability.

After the update, Ryder praised Charm for his effort and took control of the situation. "Thanks Charm. We'll take it from here. Get more citizens out of here if you can." Charm gave a salute and headed off with Ryder giving the first command. "Chase! Set up a perimeter!"

"Chase is on the case!" Chase declared, getting started as he took off to put up the police tape. He pressed a button on his side with a butt bump and had something come out of the car's tail. This started putting down the police tape with a suction cup sticking to a wall. Chase zoomed past some people before barking for another device. "Shield!" With the press of a button, the extra armor button Chase got to his new ride came in handy. It successfully blocked a firework that was about to hit him, and it let him continue with setting the perimeter."

Ryder then got to commanding the rest of the pups he knew could help with the mission. "Wave; Marshall; Rocky; put out those fireworks!"

"I'm fired up!" Marshall declared, driving forward with Rocky as the two howled before driving right into action.

Butch was currently trying to escort Mayor Humdinger out of the area. "Mr. Mayor! We've gotta get you out of here!"

"I can't believe the Paw Patrol crashed my party!" Humdinger whined, clearly being upset about their presence.

"We know sir."

"I can't stand those dogs!"

"Everyone knows you're a cat person sir."

Butch put Humdinger into the car with Ruben rushing over with his cats. "Hey! Wait up!" After Ruben got in with the cats, the three drove off.

Wave and Marshall stopped in front of the biggest fire and got ready to put it out with the press of a button. "Time to fight some fireworks!" One big hose each came out from the back of Wave and Marshall's fire trucks, spraying water on the fireworks and putting out any fire surrounding it.

But it wasn't enough. And Marshall made that clear after noticing the fire refusing to extinguish in some spots. "Better call the water cannons!"

"No need to tell me twice!" Wave assured Marshall, and they both pressed pressed another button, putting the hose away and having a big water cannon sprout out of the middle of his truck. "Yes! Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!"

The water cannons shot at the fireworks, successfully putting them, and the fire surrounding it out with several big blasts of water. Ryder's praise after that was more than earned with Liberty having the most adorable smile on her face. "Nice work you two!"

"Thank you." Wave and Marshall responded in sync, giving confident salutes before smiling to each other in regards to their teamwork.

Rocky knew it was his turn to assist, leading to him backing up towards the fireworks to dispose of them. Once he did, he pressed a button to get started. "Okay, I got it from here!" The back of Rocky's truck opened and set down a ramp for him to put the fireworks into. He picked up as many fireworks as he could, which were every one that was still lit, and closed the back with another button press. He then got ready for the final part. "Aaand crush em!"

Rocky's third button press led to his truck crushing the fireworks, which also led to them going off. "Whoa!" Rocky started laughing as his truck started bouncing from the fireworks. "Ride em cowboy!" He laughed a little more as he commented on how the fireworks were doing. "Look at em go!"

By that point, Chase had finished setting up the perimeter, using a lamppost he was close to for the finishing touches. "Perimeter secure." Chase took down his armor before looking up at the City Hall building. There were seven people stuck on the balcony. Chase knew there was no time to waste and let Ryder know. "Ryder! We've got people trapped on the balcony! I'm going in!"

"Copy that!" Ryder said on his end, and Chase then drove towards the building so he could get himself up there.

Once Chase was close enough, he barked before pressing a red button to his side. "Eject!" Chase ejected himself out of the car and barked again for his next move. "Parachute!" The parachute came out and allowed Chase to descend to the balcony safely. After making sure he landed safely, he started assuring the people they would be okay. "Everything's gonna be fine! I'm gonna get you out of here! I have the best girlfriend in the world and her helicopter can-" Just then, the wind blew Chase back with the extra power of his parachute. "Whoa!"

Chase hit the balcony and he ended up getting caught on one of the stands. His hat fell off, and he barely caught it in time. Chase then looked down, seeing the fire and sensing immediate danger around him. "Oh crap!" He pressed his Pup-Tag to get Ryder on the fritz. "Ryder; I got stuck on the balcony! I need help!"

"Don't worry Chase! We're on our way!" Ryder assured Chase, and since Wave and Marshall overheard the exchange, they nodded and drove into action.

Liberty jumped onto Wave's fire truck, making her smile as she called out her move. "Hey; I wasn't expecting a stowaway!"

"But I was right on Ryder's- ohhhhh." Liberty responded, realizing at the end that Wave was joking.

Wave and Marshall parked right in front of the fire and pressed the buttons for their water cannons. Marshall assured Chase that they were going to get him free. "Don't worry Chase! You and everyone else will be okay!" Marshall shot the first water blast, and it ended up hitting Chase dead on. It exploded, and put out a decent chunk of the fire with Chase shaking the best he could without getting down.

Wave put out the rest of the fire up above while also putting out a ladder for Chase and the others. "Chase! You're all clear!"

Chase barked in response to disconnect his parachute. "Disconnect!" After he did, he landed on the ladder with his back, stopping himself before going down. After sliding down, he hopped off of Wave's truck and went over to Ryder, who went to check on him as Marshall put out the rest of the fire. After it was all clear, Wave raised her ladder high enough to get everyone else down safely.

Chase felt awful for having failed them, and Ryder assured him that he was proud of him. "It's okay buddy. We're all good." Chase was glad the people survived, but he wished he didn't fumble the way he did. His first rescue in his nightmare city, and he was already screwing up.

After the rescue, Wave was insisting that Chase and Marshall not be left out of the photos they were taking of them once Marshall was done checking on Chase. "Make sure that once Chase is feeling okay, you get some photos of him and Marshall too. They both played a big part in this rescue."

Zuma looked over at Claw with a joke in mind about the fact that he was in the photo despite not having a specific call. "Hey Claw. We're like the kids in the gwoup pwoject who get an A for doing nothing." Claw and Zuma laughed at the joke with Snow and Rocky rolling their eyes while smiling at their immaturity.

Liberty rushed in and started praising Wave and the others for how awesome they were. "You, were, awesome! I still can't believe I got to see a real Paw Patrol mission right in front of me!"

"You were great too!" Wave assured Liberty, getting into the groove as she started reminding her of what she did. "You're the reason we got here at all. You were like, to the left, to the left; to the right, to the right!"

Liberty got into the groove as well, joining Wave as she said the last part of her praise. "Your fluffy awesome city guide, day and night!" Wave and Liberty laughed together with some of the residents noticing how happy Liberty was. Sure she was always lively and peppy, but this time, she felt like she was able to fully enjoy herself in the moment without a care.

Marshall was giving Chase a check up with Ryder sitting with him as the Dalmatian used a flashlight on his face to see any possibly missable burns. "You look okay. But I can tell you don't... feel okay. You wanna talk?"

Chase knew that along with Skye, two people he could talk to were Marshall and Ryder. "I can't believe my stupid fart brain forgot to disconnect my parachute. It's air rescue 101."

"Hey, come on Chase. You're not stupid. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes." Ryder assured Chase, and then he reminded him of why the Paw Patrol had so many members. "That's why we're a team. We all have each other's backs, and make sure we all make it through. Just like tonight. Everyone pulled through, and things turned out okay."

"But what if they didn't?" Chase asked, still holding intense remorse over his mistake. It was clear that his lingering memories about when he was last here were amplifying his self worth issues. "Those people could've died, and it would've been all my fault." Chase looked down at the ground, being trapped in deep thought as he thought about how badly he screwed up.

Just then, Wave, Skye, and Liberty arrived with Wave hopping onto the fence from behind during their attempt to check on Chase. "You know what you need Chase? A nice relaxing time back at HQ with your favorite food and show!"

Chase did start to like that vibe, and Skye hopped up and sat next to him after Ryder scooted over to allow her up. Chase looked at Skye and wrapped his arm around her before he looked at Wave. "Spaghetti and meatballs with bacon and mushrooms?"

"And mild spices, just the way you like it!" Wave assured Chase, and Liberty then hopped up to check on him too.

Chase then realized there was something he had to address from earlier. "I'm sorry I insulted your home Liberty."

Liberty showed her sweet and empathetic side, despite it being clear that comment hurt her. "Wave told me about what you went through after the rescue. And I wanna make sure you have a better time here than you did last time."

Chase did appreciate this kindness, but still wished he hadn't said what he did. "I appreciate that. I mean it though. You didn't deserve that, and neither did this city."

Liberty didn't want Chase's time in the city to be a bad one. It broke her heart just thinking about it. "I'm sorry you have a bad history with Adventure City. This time will be better. I promise."

"I hope I can believe that." Chase admitted, showing that he saw Liberty as honest. Still, the look in his eyes made it clear how much he was hurting. Ryder was getting worried about Chase. Was he really as ready to be back here as Ryder felt he was? Ryder wanted to believe so, but he could tell Chase's self worth issues were worsening here.

Later on, the news was giving a report on what happened in Adventure City that night with shots of what happened being shown. "Guardians! Dogs! Cute dogs in adorable outfits! Whatever you call them, the Paw Patrol were here to save the city from Mayor Humdinger's disastrous fireworks debacle!" Marty Muckraker spoke directly to the camera as he continued. "As a professional journalist, it's important that I remain unbiased. But I must say, oooooh yikes! An embarassing start for Mayor Humdinger, but an incredible debut for the Paw Patrol in Adventure City!"

Just then, Marshall and Rocky rolled right next to Marty Muckraker, the former having fallen butt first on Rocky's face as he announced his status. "I'm okay!" However, this was soon met alongside...

BRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAT

...a ripe five second fart that let out a green cloud of moldy cheese onto Rocky's face and made Marshall flinch. He looked down at Rocky and giggled nervously at the coughing mix, and Marty Muckmaker covered his nose as Marshall apologized for his mishap. "Sorry Rocky."

"No problem." Rocky responded after he was done coughing, showing he was used to stuff like this happening on the team.

Just then, a shoe was thrown at the TV, and it was then shown to be Mayor Humdinger's shoe. He started ranting about the fact that the Paw Patrol 'stole his glory' as if things went perfectly until they showed up. "Paw Patrol!? PAW PATROL!? I'm sick and tired of hearing about the Paw Patrol!" Mayor Humdinger struggled to take his shoe out of the TV, and after he did so, he hopped a bit before putting it back on. "I came to Adventure City to get away from them, and make a name for myself! Now they're all over the TV stealing my headlines!"

Mayor Humdinger stood up and demanded for Butch and Ruben's presence. "Butch! Ruben! Get in here!"

Butch opened the door and hit Mayor Humdinger, causing him to fall down with his top hat spinning a bit above him. He and Ruben cringed at the sight before Humdinger got back up and put his top hat back on.

"I want the Paw Patrol off the streets now!" Mayor Humdinger demanded, not caring about how hard of a task this would be. "I know they've fought army leaders, demons, and Mer-Pups in the past, but that's all irrelevant to what I want! Find them, catch them, and lock, them, away. And do it to that Dachshund too while you're at it!"

"Yes sir!"

"Right away!"

After Butch and Ruben left, Humdinger turned around and started scheming about his plan to get rid of the Paw Patrol. "The Paw Patrol have humiliated me for the last time!"

Butch and Ruben came back in after hearing that. "Sorry, did you say something?"

"What!? N-no, I was just having a private moment!" Humdinger answered before demanding Butch and Ruben get back to their jobs. "Now get out of here!" And with that, Butch and Ruben left to do the job they wee assigned.

On another night in Adventure City, a closed exit door was shown before Chase burst through it with a determined look. He instantly got to letting Ryder know he was on the case for his mission. "I see them!"

Across from him were some people stuck on scaffolding with one of them calling over to Chase. "Help!" It was confirmed that there were two people stuck on there, two window cleaners to be exact. And they were both calling for help in Chase's direction. "Help us!"

Chase ran over to the edge of the roof and called over to the people. "We're gonna get you down! Just hang on a little longer!"

"Please hurry!" One of the window cleaners called, and Chase could hear their continued cries of fear.

Chase showed fear himself over how this would go, but he shook it off and let Ryder know he was going in. "Ryder! I'm going to get them!"

"Chase!" Ryder responded, not wanting Chase to do anything he would regret. "Wait for backup!"

"There's no time! I can do this!" Chase insisted, barking for his zip-line to get him across. "Zip-line!" The zip-line attached itself to the wall of the door Chase went through, and the building close to the window cleaners. After it made a stable line for Chase to use, he gave a confident smile and ran off of the roof, jumping to let the zip-line guide him. The window cleaners continued calling to Chase for help, which made Chase's desire to save them even stronger. However, the glass his zip-line was attached to started to crack, catching his attention.

The glass Chase's zip-line was attached to broke, and he gasped out of fear before he started falling and shouting. He started calling frantically in his Pup-Tag, praying that at least one of the Paw Patrol members would hear him. "Ryder! Skye! Marshall! Anyone! I need help; please!" Chase continued to fall and cried out for help as a bunch of cars were shown below him. "HEEEEELP!"

However, Chase's prayers weren't answered, even as Skye called to him. "Chase? Chase! Chase!" He continued to fall, and landed right on one of the cars, instantly making his body go numb.

Chase suddenly woke up in his bed with a gasp of fear, looking around frantically as Skye hugged him after he woke up. "Thank goodness. Are you okay?"

Chase continued to look around and saw that he was still in his room. He must've been having a nightmare. He found his right paw on his chest right where his heart was. It was clearly beating fast. He wasn't surprised, as the nightmare itself had him die at the end. He saw Skye's worried and concerned expression, feeling the need to answer her honestly. "That dream. I tried to save two people, but my zip-line, it broke, and... I died." Skye rubbed Chase's shoulder as he contemplated what just happened. "Did I really just dream about myself dying?"

Chase didn't wait for an answer, getting up and going to his phone as Skye saw how much anxiety was in his expression. She didn't want him to go through it alone. "I can come with you if you want Chase."

"Thanks Skye, but I need some alone time right now. I'll be back in a bit." Chase replied, scrolling through the music in his phone and picking out a song called The Use In Trying to use while he was out there.

Skye noticed the song's name, and remembered its purpose. "Is that the song Ryder found to help you calm down?"

"Yeah." Chase answered, and then he left the room and went off to listen to it by himself. Skye wanted to go after him, but she felt it would be best to respect his wishes. She simply sat down on her bed, deciding to wait for Chase to come back. By the time he was okay to go back to bed, she would assure him that everything would be okay.

Chase was now sitting in front of the window, where he got ready to start playing the song he selected. It took about twenty seconds if the music playing to get started, but the lyrics did begin. And when they did, Chase was the one singing them in a slow, unsure, and lamenting voice. "Just a jump away from where you wanna go. But you're too afraid of doing it alone. So getting halfway there is all you've ever known. I've been down that road."

Chase looked down at the city as he started to wonder if he was always supposed to come back someday. If so, then why? What would this mission bring him that he didn't already have? "Every day, is like you're playing in. A different game that you can never win."

Little did Chase know that Marshall was in the kitchen getting a glass of water. When he went down the steps, he heard Chase singing to himself. "Hold your head up. You'll find your way home. You won't get what you give sometimes." He instantly knew what this was about. Not wanting to leave his best friend alone, he stood by the steps and watched, waiting until he was done. "When the dust done settles, and the smoke all clears up. There's pieces of yourself you're gonna find. Maybe that's the use in trying."

Those last two lines in the verse related to Chase's process the most. There had to be some kind of reason beyond the mission that the Paw Patrol were called here. He just couldn't tell what. "There's pieces of yourself you're gonna find. Maybe that's the use in trying."

Marshall took a sip of his water as he watched Chase continue singing. The German Shepherd saw some of the lights turn on, one of them being to a nearby apartment complex. "Just a search away from what you wanna find. But digging through the dirt won't get you diamonds every time." Chase then looked and saw a German Shepherd puppy sitting with his owner at the window. The sight of it instantly made him think about when he was abandoned. "Seeing the sun is a good enough reason, to get through the night, so close your heavy eyes."

Chase closed his eyes as the song said, contemplating just how hard it was to get through life, no matter how much you loved it. "And every day, is like a figure eight. Too impossible to navigate." Chase tried to hold his head up in sync with the next part of the song. As he did this, Marshall set his water glass up on a nearby table to avoid dropping it. "Hold your head up. You'll find your way home. You won't get what you give sometimes."

Chase opened his eyes, finding that listening to the song was now at its hardest. "When the dust done settles, and the smoke all clears up. There's pieces of yourself you're gonna find. Maybe that's the use in trying." Chase started thinking about today's mission, and how he almost lost his own life, and many others, by one simple mistake. "There's pieces of yourself you're gonna find. Maybe that's the use in trying."

Marshall started thinking about when he saw Chase get scared upon entering Adventure City. Hearing Chase sing helped him see every layer of what Chase was going through. "There's pieces of yourself you're gonna find. Maybe that's the use in trying." Chase continued to look out the window, at the big and, in his eyes, scary Adventure City. He didn't want to let everyone down. He was always loyal to the end with everyone he cared about, and he wanted that to stay true here. His biggest fear was letting anyone down. "Maybe that's the use in trying."

Chase stopped singing, and after ten seconds, Marshall could tell that the song was over. Once Chase took his headphones out, he continued to look out into the city. He allowed Marshall to walk up to him, and Marshall did so while also sitting behind him by a few feet, just in case he still wanted some space. Chase didn't mind his company though. He was able to calm around enough to feel he could contain himself. That said, he still had a question he hoped Marshall could answer. "Why do you think Ryder took me in?"

Marshall was stunned after hearing that question. He wasn't sure he had an answer. And not just because he wasn't there. "Maybe he wanted to give you a happy life?"

Words like that would normally work. But Chase's thought process was so warped that he took it the wrong way. "So he took pity on me?"

"No! That's not what I meant!" Marshall assured Chase, walking up to him while assuring him that it wasn't out of sorriness. "Ryder obviously wanted to have you. He wouldn't have taken you in and let you stay for so long if he didn't."

Chase scoffed, finding it hard to believe anyone would've wanted him around during that time. "It would surprise me if he really did want me." Chase's expression showed hurt, distress, and confusion when he looked directly at Marshall. "I wouldn't want me."

"Don't talk like that Chase." Marshall felt his heartstrings tug after Chase said that, and in a heartbeat, he told him exactly what he felt. "Your owners lost an amazing dog when they abandoned you; that wasn't your fault. Nothing that happened to you was." Marshall placed his paw on Chase's shoulder when finishing his words of comfort. "You're a dog I've always been happy to call a friend. You're Chase Armitage. And you're amazing."

Chase listened as Marshall told him about the moment he finally started becoming a real hero. "When you told me about your past... it helped me realize that no one goes through life perfectly with everything going their way. No one's problems go away at the (Snaps fingers) snap of a finger. Heroes are as vulnerable and prone to struggling as the rest of us." Marshall's smile showed just how much he valued Chase's time as a friend, and a fellow member of the Paw Patrol. "You helped me become a hero... even while dealing with your own hell."

Chase appreciated Marshall's words, but he still wasn't sure what he was missing in Adventure City. And it prevented him from taking Marshall's words as well as he'd hoped. "Thank you Marshall. I just wish I knew why I was here now. Besides the mission, of course." Marshall showed curiosity as Chase elaborated. "There has to be another reason we got called here. And why I came back after almost sixteen years of wanting to forget about this place."

"Maybe you'll find out what that is sooner than you think." Marshall suggested, walking onward with Chase to urge him to go to bed. "Come on buddy, let's get back to bed. We need as much rest as we can get, and we might be worrying Skye and Everest right now."

Chase started to feel bad about leaving Skye by herself, even though he wasn't even rude about it. "Oh no, Skye. She must be worried sick about me!"

"Don't worry, I'm sure she'll understand." Marshall assured Chase as the two of them walked back to their rooms. "She wouldn't have been dating you for almost six years if she wouldn't." Chase saw Marshall's point, but despite feeling comforted by his words, his inability to figure out what he was doing back here still plagued his mind. And as true as Marshall's words were, Chase couldn't tell how big of a step they'd be towards him find it.
