Miriah noticed a few kids coming her way, she made a face and hid behind her father. When the kids ran past them, her father shook his head and pushed her from behind him. She looked back at him fearfully, a small whine erupting from her mouth. Her father bent down on one knee, ruffled her hair, and stood back up.

"It's your eleventh birthday. Why don't you try making some friends?" He waved as he walked off. "I'll be back soon."

She looked around for a moment, eyes landing on a different group of kids. Her eyes widened with fear when she noticed a few of them looking in her direction. They leaned towards one another and whispered to each other while still staring at her. Miriah looked away sadly and sprinted off into the forest until she was safely hidden behind some trees.

She sat down on the ground and sighed. 'Were they making fun of me like the kids back home? Or am I overthinking?'

Miriah yelped when she felt a tap on her shoulder, hurriedly getting up and almost hitting the person in surprise. The kid took a step back to avoid being hit, tripping over a rock and landing on his rear.

"I-" Miriah spoke nervously, helping him up. "I'm sorry!"

"It's alright." The boy dusted off his clothes. "Why are you out here by yourself? I saw you run off earlier."

She hesitated before speaking. "I'm not.. really good at talking to others." She picked at her pigtail. "People normally think I'm weird or creepy looking…"

The boy stared in thought for a moment before smiling. "Well, you're talking to me." Miriah looked up in surprise, a tint of pink on her cheeks. "And I think you're cool!" He held out a hand to her. "Do you want to come play with me and my friend?"

Miriah reached out to him. She was a bit hesitant at first, but decided to quickly take his hand with a smile. "Yeah!"

"Are you alright?" Kurapika asked Miriah. She nodded, hesitant to speak back to him. "I see." He paused. "You've been quiet for a long time. Even though you don't usually speak, your body language says a lot for you." Miriah looked away and scoffed. "Whatever you're thinking is incorrect. I am just very observant." The kurta defensively crossed his arms.

"Hey guys, look!" Gon, who was far ahead of them, waved his arms back and forth, trying to catch the attention of his friends. Miriah and Kurapika picked up their pace while Leorio ran to catch up to them since he was far behind. They approached the cabin Gon had been leading them to and knocked on the door.

"No one home?" Gon wondered.

"Let's see." Leorio grabbed the door handle and twisted it to see if it was unlocked. The door clicked and he pushed it open. Talk about breaking and entering. On the other side of the door was revealed to be what looked like some type of creature hovering over an injured man.

"What is that thing!?" Leorio questioned as the creature turned its head to look at them.

"It appears to be a Kiriko. They can take on human form and are extremely intelligent." Kurapika informed them.

"He has someone!" Gon pointed to the woman that was being held captive by the kiriko.

"The guy on the floor looks like he needs a doctor, bad." Leorio said wearily. The kiriko suddenly jumped out the window with the woman and ran off. Miriah charged in the direction of the magical beast and followed it into the woods, Gon calling after her. She grabbed onto a branch from a tree and flipped herself up into the tree. She jumped continuously from one tree to another so she could keep pace with the Kiriko. Miriah jumped up and tried to land a kick on the magical beast but was knocked back by its fist.

Gon emerged from behind her while it was distracted and hit the beast with his fishing pole. The Kiriko dropped the woman and Kurapika managed to catch her from the ground. Miriah hissed and looked at her arm where a tree branch had cut her. She jumped down and landed on her feet near Kurapika when she lost sight of Gon. The woman they saved begged to go see her husband that was left at the cabin with Leorio. She kept assuring him that she was fine and wanted to see her husband. Her pleas only made Kurapika notice something strange about her.

"Those tattoos…" Kurapika stared at the woman's arm, making her hide it and looked away from him.

"Hey guys!" Leorio called, running up to them. "Are you guys okay?"

"What are you doing here?" Miriah inquired, taking a step in front of Kurapika and the woman when he got close to them.

"How is the man you were caring for?" The blonde looked around Miriah at him.

"Good. The wound wasn't as deep as it looked so I gave him some painkillers to let him sleep it off at the cabin." He replied. "What?" Leorio gave a confused look when the two only stared at him.

"Kurapika." Miriah held out her hand towards him.

"Already on it." Kurapika threw her his bokken and watched as she hit Leorio in the face with one end. He staggered backwards while holding his chin and let out a low chuckle.

"How did you know that I was an imposter?" The magical beast asked, turning back into its normal form.

"I didn't. Well, it was a hunch. Though I haven't known Leorio for long, I could tell your aura was different. Besides, either one of us would have hit Leorio for leaving a wounded person unattended when the cause is still running about." Miriah responded and threw Kurapika's wooden swords back to him. The kiriko laughed loudly and disappeared into the forest.

"And you, tell me right now." Kurapika asked the woman and put his bokken to her neck. "Who are you and what do you want from us?" The woman smirked.

"It's all a part of your test!" She waved them off. "So please put your weapons and hostility away!" Miriah and Kurapika gave her a dumbfounded look.

"A test?" The Kurta questioned.

"I should have known." Miriah murmured.

The woman got up and dusted herself before apologizing for deceiving them. She led them back to the cabin where Gon, Leorio and the other Kirikos were waiting for them. They explained that they were navigators for the exam who help guide applicants to the exam site once they've passed a test.

The woman, who was their daughter, smiled at Kurapika. "You were able to determine from the vague hints that I gave you that we weren't actually spouses." She held up her arm and smeared the fake tattoos with her hand. "In this region, these tattoos mark a woman as single for life. This demonstrates that you are very knowledgeable. Therefore, you pass." Kurapika let out a sigh of relief. She looked to Miriah next. "Although you didn't notice the same as your friend, you were exceptionally quick to assess the situation and went after my captor when you saw I was in danger. You also showed that you are very perceptive in analyzing other people. So you pass as well!"

"Good grief." Miriah mumbled under breath.

"Leorio," The man went next. "While you were not able to figure out my true identity, you however dressed my wounds faster and more thoroughly than any doctor. You even took the extra measure to reassure me that my wife was going to be okay. Your kindness makes you worthy to take the exam. Therefore, you pass."

"Wait seriously!?" Leorio let out the breath he had been holding and fell back on his rear in relief. "Thank goodness."

"You did it!" Gon cheered him on.

The two kiriko parents chuckled and stared at Gon. "Gon. Your keen eyesight, physical ability and powers of observation make you qualified to take the hunter exam."

"Yay!" Gon smiled widely and fist bumped his friends. "We all passed!"

"Now that everything has been cleared up. As soon as you take a brief break and Miriah bandages her wounds, we'll take you to where the exam will be held." The woman clapped.

"Miriah, you got hurt?" Gon leaned over, giving her a worried look. She waved her hand, brushing off the situation.

"Still, you should have it looked at and bandaged." Kurapka added.

"Yeah! Even tiny injuries could become a problem in the future." Leorio informed. Miriah put her hands on her hips, annoyed by their persistence.
