CHAPTER 12_OBLIGATORY BEACH EPISODE (NO WATERMELONS WERE HARMED)
Shinji woke up, feeling like he'd had the best sleep ever. It might have had something to do with the light yet warm blanket cradling him, or the gentle breeze carrying the smells of breakfast from outside, or the perfectly firm yet soft mattress on which he lay. His limbs still tingled from the traces of Unit One's sympathetic feedback system following the battle against Skeletor and the undead. It usually took a day or two to really go away, though by now he was used to that.
He opened his eyes and looked up at a somewhat unfamiliar ceiling. The room was lavishly appointed, with silk brocade tapestries hanging off the walls, rich vivid paints behind them, and the bed was a massive four poster that was bigger even than Misato's entire bedroom. Not that she used it for anything other than passing out in. Further, the entire suite in which Shinji had been assigned was probably larger than the entire Katsuragi apartment, and then some.
"Good morning, Sir Ikari," said an oddly familiar gentle male voice in the room. "I've been waiting for you to wake up."
Shinji looked about the room, eyes finally settling on the sight of King Kosta reclining gracefully on a chaise, casually popping a grape into his mouth. Beside him, two of his faithful servant girls were fanning him gently with giant green leaves. The king had no shirt on, and his loose white pants were made of such thin material, that Shinji did not need to imagine what was underneath. He'd have preferred waking up next to Pen Pen. At least the mysteriously intelligent bird was cute and fluffy.
Kosta was neither fluffy, nor cute. He was however, smiling very hedonistically. Shinji could only manage an uncomfortable facsimile of a smile in return before averting his eyes and trying to concentrate on an image other than what was on display in front of him.
"Oh, uh, good morning Your Majesty," said Shinji. "I…did I fall asleep in the wrong room?"
"No, you did not, Sir Ikari," replied Kosta in that smooth and buttery voice of his. "No room you are in could be the wrong room. In fact, I would welcome you into my suite for any recreational activities at your leisure."
"I-I will, um, keep that in mind," Shinji stammered out, totally embarrassed by the thought of intruding into Kosta's room. It was a very un-Japanese thing to do, even if it was for some recreational activities like board games. "But I wouldn't dream of intruding into your rooms. I'm sure you're very busy."
"I'm never, ever, too busy for you."
Shinji could only blink. "Um, if it's alright with you, w-would you please tell me where Marcus, Renee and Anna are?"
"Of course, anything for you Sir Ikari. They're just outside in the common area having breakfast. My chefs are at your beck and call for whatever breakfast you desire, and we have the ingredients for. It's the least I can do after you saved the city. Now, I will leave you to prepare for breakfast."
With that, Kosta clicked his fingers and from somewhere in the room, four men with glisteningly smooth skin appeared to deftly heft the whole assembly of hedonistic king, servant girls and extravagant gold chaise out of the room. Shinji sighed in appreciation of gaining some privacy back, and at just how unconventional the whole situation was. He got out of the much too comfortable bed and got dressed for breakfast.
/
Shinji couldn't quite explain or remember exactly how the conversation led to them going to the beach. Indeed, he vaguely remembered hearing something about Renee wanting to take advantage of the brilliant sunshine in Sapphirica. There was some talk about it being 'her element', and would accelerate her recuperation. There didn't seem to be much argument from anyone else in the party, plus Anna seemed quite keen after looking at Shinji and pondering something for a few seconds.
On the outside, he wore a slight smile, the polite kind that he pasted on his face when he didn't want to offend anybody. Inside, Shinji was slightly panicking. He had, after all, neglected to learn to swim. And he had nothing to wear to the beach. At least in a post second impact Tokyo-3, the beach was not something anybody went to if they wanted a good time. The water was a poisonous red colour, with only some small pockets of restored sea where life was able to survive.
Nevertheless, they were now at the sandy beach a short distance outside the gates of Sapphirica. The sun was fantastic. The chaise lounges they'd all been provided with by King Kosta were extremely comfortable. The servant girls were experts at fanning people with their giant green leaves. And Shinji was thoroughly enjoying the massage he was being given by an enormously fit man named Byron and Anna was running around enjoying herself in a red and white swimming suit and oh gods why am I experiencing thermal expansion?! He shook the thought away. That was not how he thought of her.
Renee was also getting the royal treatment next to him. Based on the contented light snoring coming from her bed, the small but lithe masseuse was working wonders for her. Shinji decided to follow her lead and relax into it. Another battle fought and won with little damage to the city and comparatively few casualties. Kosta was happy and ready to sign the alliance treaty with Summerise, though he insisted on doing it at a time of his own choosing. Shinji had a bad feeling that it was going to involve both of them not wearing a shirt. In fact, did Kade Kosta even own a shirt? It was perhaps a question best left unanswered.
His thoughts drifted inward. He was here now through some sort of magic, miracle, or universal sleight of hand. It was not clear which. It probably didn't matter. What did he want to do once he'd helped save this world? Would he stay, or would he go back 'home' and help save that world, if it was still possible? He had, after all, spent months in this world now. Asuka, Misato, Rei, Toji, Kensuke, and everyone in Tokyo-3 could all be dead by now. It was a sobering thought.
Even if the world there wasn't as magical as this new place, and even if it wasn't as welcoming or nice, Shinji still had emotional attachments to the place. He cared for Misato, and Rei. And he definitely cared deeply for Asuka, whether he wanted to admit it or not. That world was still worth saving. If he could find a way to do it, then he should make the effort to do so. It was a revelation that he wanted to save the world, rather than blindly following orders. When did he even have the initiative in his mind to do these things?
"Pondering the meaning of life, the universe and everything?" asked Marcus. "Or are you simply enjoying watching our queen in her swimwear?
Shinji hadn't realised that he was looking in her general direction, or for how long he'd been doing so during the zone out. But the implication was enough for his face to take on the colour and luminance of a tomato.
"I-I-I…wasn't," denied Shinji meekly. Even if he hadn't been consciously doing it, there was no doubt that Marcus knew about Shinji and Anna getting closer day-by-day.
"You know, she cares a lot for you," said Marcus gently. "I can tell you feel the same way about her."
Shinji nodded, blush fading ever so slowly. "She…reminds me of me. Both of us lost something important, but they both dealt with it differently, I think. Anna told me about losing her parents, but how she was able to rely on you and everyone else to grow and move past it. I didn't have that kind of help until you came along. I'm not sure how I can ever repay you for all your kindness."
"Pah. You're doing more than enough by helping to save the world!"
Marcus looked thoughtfully at Shinji and then at Anna, hand on his square, handsome jawline. "Yes, she's had to grow up quickly and fill the role of monarch with less preparation than we all wanted. It's been fortunate that nobody has tried to undermine her authority yet, though I suspect it's because her uncles command a powerful faction of the nobility. Nobody wants to cross them."
"Still, she's done well to get here. But I know she hides a lot of pain and doubt underneath. And there's probably survivor's guilt all mixed in there." He looked meaningfully at Shinji. "But she's optimistic, and you've been able to relate to her, which means you must share a lot in common. I hope you will also be able to find a path to overcoming it too."
Shinji didn't respond to that, but it seemed that Marcus picked up the point. "I can tell by the expression on your face, Shinji, that it hasn't been easy for you, and it will keep being hard for some time. For what it's worth, I'm sorry about what you've been through. Though I can tell you're starting to see things a bit differently with us. You're smiling more, you talk more and you're not always looking down now."
"I haven't really noticed any changes," said Shinji, thinking about the things he'd been through. All the running away, and all the obedience just because it was easier than doing standing up for himself and be assertive in what he wanted.
"That's because it didn't happen overnight, Shinji," Marcus responded gently. "I remember when I was young too. I was always in a hurry, do this, do that. But I didn't realise that every day, in some small way, I was changing. Eventually, I would gain some bad habits, but I would also learn some things too. You also won't realise it until five, ten years into the future."
Shinji nodded. He wasn't sure if he believed it, but Marcus and Renee and Anna, and everybody who he'd met here had been honest with him. They'd been through their own personal trials and low points. They had somehow gotten out of it. But they hadn't done it alone, it seemed.
Which made him wonder why he had been alone in his own world. Was it his choice, or was it forced upon him?
"But, I-I don't know how to fix things. I'm always scared, and then I run away," Shinji replied meekly. He was ashamed that seemed to be what he was good at. "I always just…run away."
Marcus tilted his head. "What do you mean? I didn't see you run away when that slime showed up at Summerise. Or when Gem attacked Boldhold. Or here when that giant skeleton attacked with a bunch of zombies."
"But I ran away that one time…" Shinji started to say.
To which Marcus cut him off. "And you came back. You learned things. You got involved in things. And when we saw what you were capable of, we supported you because we could see that it was helping you get a new outlook on life."
"Thank you," Shinji said quietly, looking down at his feet. "For…what you've done for me. It's more than anybody has done for me. Even my parents."
Marcus could only look at him with sympathy. "That's tough Shinji. I understand a part of what you feel. At some point, and I don't remember when, I just decided to live for myself, make myself happy and set my own goals."
Marcus smiled encouragingly. "I think that it's worked out well so far. I…know that it seems the happiness you want is so far away. But you've taken the first steps towards achieving it. So, keep going. And, of course, this just means my brilliant leadership helped you on your way!"
The two of them laughed. If only it was that easy to just turn my life around.
If Marcus was only saying things to make him feel better, it was certainly working. If he was lying, then at the least the placebo effect of the lie was working. So either way, there really was nothing to do but to accept the compliment for what it is.
"Now, I think it's time for you to stop sitting here being all mopey and philosophical," directed Marcus cheerfully. "Go have some fun with Anna."
And so, Shinji did.
/
There was something immodest and mortifying about signing a momentous alliance treaty between two nations in what was essentially baggy underwear and nothing else. As much as Shinji was embarrassed by having to wear what was described to him as 'formal ceremonial dress', his brain kept telling him that there was no damned way this could be formal wear. Admittedly, the silks were very comfortable, especially in the way they embraced his lower body without being intrusive. But Shinji felt completely inadequate baring his skinny torso, untanned and twiggy legs in front of everybody he knew. It didn't help that all the Sapphirican men were so tanned and buffed. Even Kosta had good muscle definition. He felt like so much flotsam in the same room as them.
He wasn't the only person who was barely dressed. King Kosta lounged comfortably on his signature golden chaise. He did so across the large stone table on which they were formalising the alliance between Summerise and Sapphirica with that wispy hedonistic smirk that was always plastered on his face. Shinji wondered for a second if maintaining that face ever hurt Kosta's face. For some reason Kosta insisted that Shinji had to also be at the table while Anna – dressed in a regal yellow and green dress – signed the alliance agreement.
Once the signatures of both monarchs had dried and they stood to shake hands, with the two of them walking out on to the dais to proclaim the alliance was sealed.
Mission accomplished. Shinji sighed in relief. An unintended faux pas had been fixed in the only way Shinji could, by using a giant monster to destroy another. And finally, this chapter of his almost-misadventure could be put behind him. He could go back home to Summerise (funny he'd called it that) and then relax. But not before a farewell dinner hosted by Kosta and what he hoped would be a peaceful night's rest.
/
If there was one thing that an eccentric, hedonistic monarch knew how to do, it was to put on a spectacular party. Where Anna's events were precise, elegant and stately, Kosta's seemed spontaneous, chaotic and filled with frivolity. It wasn't that Summerisians didn't know how to party or have fun, it was just a different way of doing things.
The palace grounds were filled with people, some of them dancing, some of them singing, or eating, and drinking. Many were even doing some combination of those things. A very loud band was playing catchy tunes somewhere amongst the most crowded part of the gardens. The end of each song never failed to draw loud applause and cheers of appreciation. There was a lot of space outside the palace, and a gentle desert breeze carried the smells of all the food through the crowd.
Shinji wandered around the party, content not to be bothered by many people. Unlike Summerise, where he'd been paraded around by Anna at every opportunity, Kosta seemed to be more into having a grand party to celebrate the successful defeat of Skeletor and its accompanying zombies. Anna had been whisked away by an assortment of people to perform her diplomatic duties the moment she set foot on the ground, an apologetic look sent to him, and a smile of understanding returned. Marcus and Renee followed her, intent on protecting their queen from any danger, low though the risk was.
That left him to sample the food and drink that was heaped on the tables and make small talk with guests who happened to be doing the same thing. He had no idea who the guests were. Some of them proudly proclaimed they were great artists or sportspeople, but Shinji didn't recognise any. They asked him who he was too. He just replied that he was a soldier from Summerise and helped defend the city, which earned him many a loud 'thank you' and slaps on the back from the men and kisses on each cheek from the women.
After picking up what felt like his tenth platter of food, most of which was unidentifiable but delicious, he found a table with two benches hidden in a grove of palm trees with a small fountain gurgling away in solitude. It was a very peaceful place and blocked most the din coming from the rest of party. He looked up at the sky as he ate, searching for familiar constellations. He found none, but he did see the faint stream of stars that was the Milky Way, or at least he assumed it was. It reminded him of that time he, Rei Asuka lay on the grass next to their Evangelions after killing that spider Angel while waiting for power to be restored in Tokyo-3.
A quiet rustling brought Shinji out of his thoughts. Kosta had somehow wandered into the grove all alone. He carried a glass of something bubbling and sweet smelling, and of course, that cocky smile of his.
"Hello, Sir Ikari," the young king said quietly. "I was looking for you, and one of my guests pointed me in the right direction. Are loud parties not your thing?"
Shinji shrugged. "I'm more used to peace and quiet. I get enough loud noises and excitement when fighting, slimes, wolves and skeletons…"
Kosta chuckled. "Yes, I'm sure that's the case. I must say, I admire your strength of character. It's not often I meet someone who is brave enough to face giant monsters on the field of battle and then Queen Annabella Laurel Greendrake at home."
Shinji had thankfully been eating some jelly-like delicacy, which is why his throat did not explode in a coughing fit. "Y-you know that Anna and I are…"
"Intimate? Yes, of course. It's easy to see considering how the two of you look at each other. She's absolutely smitten with you."
Kosta gave him an easy and warm smile. It wasn't until now that Shinji realised there was a difference in his behaviour. The king seemed serious now, despite the grin. He also seemed to have mellowed out now that he was alone. Maybe everything else was just an act for the masses.
"I…really like her too," Shinji admitted, finally, to someone out loud. Strange that it was King Kosta, but he guessed that Marcus and Renee had already accepted that as the truth without the need for it to be spoken aloud. "It kind of crept up on me, I guess. I admire her strength, and how she has been able to not fall into a pit of despair like I used to."
"I didn't know you before you…arrived here, but I still sense there is uncertainty in you," said Kosta thoughtfully. "Some things you're still debating inside yourself. There are times when your eyes focus on something far away, if only for a second. Is there something else you seek even more desirable than a queen?"
"Uh, no. Well, maybe," replied Shinji. "Where I come from, I also need to fight to save the world. At some point, I need to be able to go back and finish what I started. I have no idea how to go about that yet."
"It sounds like you need some magic Shinji, something especially powerful."
Shinji nodded. "Yeah, that's probably the only solution. I can't think of anything else that could send me and Unit One back."
"Then I think you have a solution. It's mutually beneficial to us, since it also means that by obtaining this power, you would have saved our world in the process."
Shinji raised his eyebrows at Kosta. He didn't dare hope that there was a way back home. Even if 'home' wasn't the most pleasant, he felt he was still needed there. And his mother, stuck in the Evangelion though she was, still needed to see everything through. He wanted to see if there was some way to get her out of there.
"What's the solution?" Shinji asked Kosta.
"Well, you will need to assemble the Seven Dragons' Balls," said Kosta matter-of-factly.
This sounded familiar to Shinji. "The Seven Dragon Balls? I-I've heard of something similar before in my world, even though it's just a kids' story."
"Oh, I think you misheard me. I definitely said the seven Dragons' Balls," Kosta responded, finger pointing up to emphasise the point.
"Uh…I don't understand."
"Hmm. I'm sure you do. You are undoubtedly aware of those seven mystical dragons Gerard the Unhinged keeps and are the source of his power?"
Shinji nodded, wondering where this was going to go. "Yes, we ran into one of them once. It was the big black one."
"Oh, good. You know them then. Well, you must defeat that one, and its six siblings to neutralise his power over this world. Once you have killed them, you can get their balls and then…"
The light in the back of Shinji's eyes went from puzzlement to bewilderment, to fear and disgust, all within a second upon realising what Kosta was referring to when he said the phrase 'get their balls'. His hands instinctively went to protect his own, not that they would have offered much in the way of protection anyway.
"Ah, I see you now understand the process. Anyway, when you have extracted the aforementioned unmentionables, they will unite, and their true form will be revealed."
Shinji was afraid what seven sets of unmentionables would combine to form. But he had to ask anyway. "So, what's their 'true form'?"
Kosta drew a deep breath and searched for the answer. "I don't really know. I just know what the records and history tell us. By their powers combined, the Seven Dragons' Balls will summon the great Dragon God Shenlong. And it can grant you one singular wish. However, some rules apply. You cannot influence someone's free will, and you cannot bring someone back from the dead."
"Ugh, I-I was really hoping for this to be a bit simpler. Obtaining the – " and he loathed to say it " – Seven Dragons' Balls seems to need people to do something really special."
"Of course, the balls grant you a powerful wish, something meaningful and awesome. You didn't expect to be able to walk into some caves, pick up the balls and walk out again without some sort of challenge, right? This isn't some sort of silly story told to entertain children. This is the real world!"
Shinji could see the logic in that. Though he thought that just killing a dangerous and angry dragon would be enough of a challenge without having to manually extract the 'prize' would surely have been enough. Evidently, this universe had a perverse sense of humour.
"One last thing, of course. Only the person who kills the dragons can make the wish, nobody else. It wouldn't be fair for the person who did all the work to come up empty if someone decides to steal the balls. That would be a horrible outcome."
Shinji thought about it. If it really was true that killing Gerard's dragons could, after some extra work, guarantee he'd get whatever he desired, then maybe this was the answer to his problem of getting back to Tokyo-3. If the stories were true and this wasn't some silly fantasy dreamt up by a prankster. He would have to stop the dragons anyway, so it was a matter of convenience in this case. What was the worst that could happen? If he couldn't go back, he would have to stay in this world and build a life.
Staying here doesn't sound half bad.
"Well, I must take my leave. The guests won't entertain themselves!" said Kosta as he stood and smiled at Shinji. "I am truly grateful for what you have done for us. I hope that you will find what you are looking for."
"Thank you, Your Grace," replied Shinji, a polite Japanese bow followed. "You've given us hope of victory yet."
"Hah! It's you who gave us hope," Kosta retorted as he disappeared into the foliage, back to the party and the frivolity.
Shinji stayed in the little grove for a while longer, enjoying the opportunity to sort out his thoughts in solitude.
/
The return journey from Sapphirica to Summerise was uneventful. There was no giant dragon to impede the way, no dramatic entrances by Gerard the Unhinged, and the weather was fine. Before he knew it, Shinji found himself seated in the Summerise Adventurers' Guild once again enjoying a hearty meal of vegetable and meat stew with crusty bread. It really did feel like he'd just come home. He hadn't realised how much he missed the food in the place until he took the first bite of the bread. It was lightly toasted and heavily buttered. He let the feeling of satisfaction permeate through his body.
Joyce was her usual perky and busy self, cheerfully taking orders, and making small talk while efficiently distributing food and drink to all the patrons. There was the typical happy atmosphere in the tavern as people came and went.
Joyce eventually started to update the rankings for the week. Shinji watched as she took his name and placed it two more spots above some more seasoned adventurers. There were some cheers and joking demands to 'please explain' the rankings change.
"Next time you use lightning to destroy a giant skeleton and its zombie army, you'll get to jump a few spots too!" Joyce chirped out at some of the rowdy patrons. "Oh, before I forget!"
She bought out a familiar looking basket, this time adorned with a bouquet of sweet-smelling flowers, and placed it on the table in front of Shinji. "Joyce told me all about your exploits in Sapphirica, Shinji. This is the Guild's reward for defeating yet another giant monster."
Shinji had to half stand from his chair peered into the large, much taller than expected, basket. It contained a lot of nicely packaged food, and their fragrant scents invaded his consciousness as his eyes explored each nook and cranny. His stomach rumbled despite having just eaten a lot of his lunch. There were another batch of tokens signalling he'd earned more Wanderlust Wishes.
"Thank you, Joyce, I know I'm going to enjoy the food. If it's alright with you, I'll use the Wishes now too."
"Alright then," she smiled and batted her eyelids. "Here. We. Go!"
In the same way as when Shinji first used ten Wanderlust Wishes, these ones flew languidly into the air and out of the roof, leaving a glittering pink and blue trail which coalesced into a simple wooden chest. Shinji opened the chest and inside, there was an assortment of junk, a shield made of what looked and felt like half-rotten bark, a sword with no tip and moth eaten cloth wrapped around the handle. Shinji discarded those, and the other junk items like they were so much hot garbage.
When he reached the bottom of the chest, five small items shimmered and sparkled in the tavern's warm light. Everyone who could get a view was peering into the chest with Shinji and Joyce. Oohs and ahs filled the room as every adventurer lived their thirst for new gear vicariously through those lucky enough to be gifted Wanderlust Wishes.
Joyce, always matter of fact, opened an encyclopedia that had not been present a split second ago. Shinji was still not sure how she managed to have everything she needed on hand.
"Hmm, let's see, these are not weapons, so they must be in the artifacts section…" she muttered to herself. Everybody drew that little bit closer in anticipation.
"Ah, here it is. This is an artifact set called Echoes of Furious Thunder. Now, what does it do…" she said flipping backwards and forwards through a few pages, trying to search for the relevant one. "Yup, so this set was created by a legendary bird that called on the power of lightning to catch its prey. Seems extreme… Anyway, when equipped, this set will amplify electrical attacks and stun opponents. Seems like a useful thing to have!"
"That does sound useful," said Shinji. He got up to leave and paid Joyce his bill. "I just need to have it on me when I go into battle?"
"Mhm!" chirped Joyce with a brilliant smile and flutter of her eyelashes. She waved him good night as Shinji opened the door and walked into the evening. "See you next time!"
/
One of the things that Shinji hadn't noticed lately was that he actually looked forward to each new day. In Tokyo-3, waking up, going to school, synchronisation tests, fighting angels and all the chores he did at home were just an obligation. By contrast, he'd found motivation in getting up and going about his day during his time in Summerise, apart from having Asuka yelling at him and calling him names.
Though there was something greatly motivating about being yelled at by an angry German redhead. Shinji hadn't matured yet and didn't know if this was a problem or just something he liked.
Something he definitely liked was relaxing at the beach next to Summerise. It had been a long day of training to fight, lunch, and even more training to fight. At least it felt like he was finally getting the hang of using a polearm, rather than the puny little progressive knife. He stood on the sand watching the sun set gently over the horizon as gentle waves lapped at his feet. The sun was saying goodnight in a spectacular way, its orange light spilling over and around clouds hanging low over the sea.
"Pondering the meaning of life, the universe and everything?" questioned a familiar and welcome voice behind him.
Shinji turned to find Anna standing there in a silky green and yellow dress with a light jacket. The golden hour light and her hair billowing in the gentle sea breeze made her gentle smile mysteriously inviting. He reciprocated, and the two of them held each other while watching the sunset.
"You didn't answer my question."
"Right. I was just watching the sunset and enjoying it. I'm glad you're here with me," Shinji said reassuringly. "I had a long day training, so my brain wasn't doing much thinking."
"Mmm," Anna grumbled into his shoulder. "And here I was hoping you were thinking about me."
They chuckled together, enjoying the peace and quiet for a little while before Anna spoke again. "Actually, I do have something serious to talk to you about."
Shinji looked at her without shifting his or her body. He liked the feeling of holding her close by him. "What is it?"
"We're getting close to getting enough forces to attack Gerard the Unhinged. The final nation we need is Cullena. They've already provisionally signed the alliance agreement, but they want to make sure that we're competent at fighting before everything is finalised."
"I thought beating three giant monsters would be a good sign of competence?" wondered Shinji.
Anna scoffed half-heartedly. "It's one thing to hear about someone's exploits. It's another to witness them first hand. Cullena is a fighting nation. Their people are fierce, expert warriors, men and women alike. So they want to test our soldiers against theirs on the field of battle. Non-lethally of course."
"So how do I fit in?"
"This should just be a very easy job of escorting and providing moral support for our soldiers. It would do the Cullenaens some good to see the full arsenal available to us."
Shinji couldn't see any problems with the idea. After all, he was happy to help make sure his friends were safe, and if this was one step closer to saving this world, it was a no-brainer.
"Alright, when do we leave?"
"Not for another few days yet. The supplies and preparations are nearly complete though. The advantage of that is that we can have a few more of these sunsets before you go."
Shinji just nodded, and the two of them stayed there on the beach even after the sun had disappeared beneath the horizon.
