Chapter 12: Leaving
Despite her initial plan to confront General Fong, Katara found herself altering her course of action, drawn instead to seek out Aang. Her footsteps echoed softly through the corridors as she made her way to the apartment. There, she found him standing out on the balcony, gazing pensively at the sweeping vista of rolling hills that stretched beyond the base's imposing walls. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows over the landscape, painting the scene in warm hues of amber and gold.
"Aang, we need to talk," she began gently.
His eyes, heavy with a profound sadness she wished she could shield him from, turned to her. "About what, Katara?"
With a sigh, she leveled him with a glance. "About you. You have been pushing yourself too hard, Aang. You have been trying all these techniques, but it is not working, and I am worried about you."
Aang frowned, his shoulders slumping. "I know I need to master it. It is the only way I can stop the Fire Lord."
Katara placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Aang, we all want you to succeed, but not at the cost of your well-being. You are more than just the Avatar. You are our friend."
He met her eyes, a glimmer of understanding dawning. "I do not want to let everyone down, again."
Katara's voice softened. "You won't." She said reassuringly. "I believe your destiny is to defeat the Fire Lord and restore balance to our world. But I think it should be like the Avatars before you. Learning each element and mastering them to fulfill your destiny."
Aang's eyes reflected his earnest concern. "But what if it takes too long? What if we do not have enough time for me to learn everything? The Fire Nation-"
"The Fire Nation suffered a loss in the North," Katara stated softly cutting him off gently. "They will need time to regroup, probably time to rebuild their fleets. They will need time just like you do."
"You do not know how you look when you go into the Avatar state. You are reckless, irrational, no self-control. And that is just it. You are not yourself in that state. You need to learn how to bend the elements and hopefully, the Avatar state will be something you will eventually have more control over. But it is not the way right now."
Their eyes locked, and a glimmer of understanding began to dawn in Aang's gaze. He pulled her into a hug. "Thank you, Katara."
"You're welcome," Katara replied, stepping back from their friendly embrace, her warm smile fading as her expression grew more serious. "There is something else I need to talk to you about, Aang. It is about Zuko."
Aang furrowed his brow. "What is it?"
"General Fong somehow knows about the life debt, and has been using it against Zuko," Katara began, her voice filled with concern. She continued, recounting the ordeals Zuko had endured while imprisoned in the dungeon. Aang's face darkened as he listened, a growing sense of anger and determination welling up within him.
"That is terrible," he said, his voice filled with anger. "We need to get him out of there."
Katara nodded in agreement. "I had tried to see him several times, but Fong's been keeping me away. I did manage to get in today, though. He is in the infirmary now, recovering."
Aang took a moment to process this information, his anger simmering. "I think it is time we leave," he said softly. "I do not think I will be able to go into the Avatar State. We should continue our journey to Omashu. Without General Fong," he added, his tone resolute.
"I think that's the right decision, Aang," she replied, her voice gentle and reassuring. "We have tried everything here, and it is clear that General Fong's methods will not lead anywhere good."
Aang let out a sigh of relief as if a great burden had been lifted. "I want to focus on learning earthbending from King Bumi. It is the next step in my journey."
Sokka, who had been quietly listening at the door, chimed in. "And I am tired of this military base. We need to keep moving."
Katara nodded in agreement. "Aang, let's get some rest tonight and leave tomorrow. We can let General Fong know in the morning."
Aang managed a smile, the weight on his shoulders lightening. "Thank you, Katara. You are right. It is time to move forward."
The first light of dawn bathed the Earth Kingdom military base in a soft, golden glow. Aang, Katara, and Sokka had packed their belongings and were preparing to leave for Omashu. Their decision had brought a sense of relief, but it also left a lingering tension in the air.
Katara had gone to get Zuko. And Aang and Sokka, determined to have a final conversation with General Fong before their departure, approached the stern-faced general as he was overseeing his soldier's morning drills.
"General Fong, I need to talk to you," Aang said calmly, his presence drawing the attention of the soldiers nearby.
General Fong turned to face Aang, his expression a mixture of curiosity and impatience. "What is it, Avatar Aang?"
"I have thought about it," Aang began, "and I have decided to stop trying to go into the Avatar State. It is too dangerous."
General Fong's brows furrowed, his eyes narrowing with disbelief. "Stop? You can not stop, Aang! We need the Avatar State to end this war!"
Aang remained resolute. "I understand the importance of ending this war, but I will not risk my life or others anymore to do so. I need to focus on mastering the elements. Besides I do not think that I can enter the Avatar State on my own. It is more of a defense mechanism, for when I am truly in danger."
"This is what I was afraid of." General Fong stated.
Before anyone could react, General Fong fell into a stance stopping a foot to the ground and sending a volley of rocks hurtling in Aang's direction. Aang instinctively air-bended the projectiles away from him. Then he was hit by a massive rock wall rising from the ground beneath him sending him flying backwards.
"MEN," General Fong shouted. "ATTACK THE AVATAR!"
As Aang struggled to regain his footing, the earthbenders under General Fong's command surged forward, launching an array of boulders and shards of rock toward him. Aang, standing alone against the onslaught, summoned his airbending prowess to defend himself.
With remarkable agility, he airbent powerful gusts, diverting and evading the incoming projectiles. His precision and control over the air element made him a formidable opponent against the earthbenders.
General Fong watched with growing frustration as Aang held his own against his forces. He continued to hurl rocks and debris at the determined Avatar.
When she awoke that morning, she had suddenly been hit by a fear that he would be moved back to his cell and restrained back in that chair. Fearing that if that was the case, she would have problems getting him out again. Katara reached the infirmary and a sense of relief washed over her when she found Zuko lying there, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm, his face relaxed in sleep. His normally tense features seemed softer in this vulnerable state. Katara reached out and gently shook his shoulder. Her gentle touch roused Zuko from his slumber and he blinked sleepily as he slowly became aware of his surroundings. For a brief moment, he seemed disoriented.
"How are you feeling?" Katara asked.
Zuko took a moment to assess himself. "Better," he admitted, though there was still a lingering sense of exhaustion in his eyes.
"Good," Katara stated satisfied, as she helped him sit up. "We are leaving."
"Now?" He asked in surprise.
"Yes, we need to hurry." She answered.
He nodded and stood without assistance, motioning for her to lead the way. Katara wasted no time as she led him swiftly through the infirmary and out into the corridors of the Earth Kingdom military base.
As they navigated the labyrinth of hallways, a maelstrom of emotions churned within Zuko. His keen eye remained ever vigilant, darting about to scan for potential obstacles or hidden threats. Katara's guidance was a welcome anchor in the disorienting maze of the military base. Their footsteps reverberated through the cold, silent corridors, a stark contrast to the turbulent whirlwind of thoughts within him.
It was unnerving that they encountered no one on their journey, an eerie silence that hung in the air like a shroud of foreboding. The atmosphere grew increasingly tense as Katara led them closer to the training grounds, where they were to rendezvous with Sokka and Aang.
The ground quivered beneath their feet, accompanied by the cacophonous symphony of explosions that reverberated through the walls. The echoing booms stirred a knot of unease in Zuko's chest.
Emerging into the expanse of training grounds Katara and Zuko were met with a scene of organized chaos. Earthbenders moved with swift precision, sending projectiles made of rock hurtling toward their target.
Aang, for his part was running, dodging, and deflecting everything that was coming his way. All the while shouting at the soldiers that he would not fight them and asking that the General have his men stand down and stop all this.
Zuko's sharp eyes immediately fell on Sokka, who stood at a safe distance from the chaos, his brow furrowed with a growing sense of unease. Amid the chaotic training grounds, Sokka noticed Katara and gestured urgently for her to come over. His voice barely rose above the tumultuous cacophony, but his concern was palpable.
Katara motioned for Zuko to follow her and they moved to join Sokka. They navigated through the shifting earth and flying rocks, easing past groups of earthbenders focused on Aang. The ground rumbled beneath their feet with each powerful bending move.
"Sokka, what happened?" Katara asked as she crouched down beside him.
Sokka's eyes stayed fixed on the chaotic scene, his voice tense as he explained the situation to Katara. "General Fong went nuts! Aang told him he was not going to try to force his way into the Avatar state and that we were leaving, and Fong just lost it. He ordered his men to attack Aang."
"We need a plan," Sokka stated, then added in an irritated voice. "Why is he here?"
Zuko turned his attention away from the chaos before them to watch as Sokka looked him up and down taking in his appearance. His frown deepened when he focused his gaze on the princes' free wrists.
"Katara, why the hell is he not in chains?" Sokka asked. But before Katara could respond a boulder hit the wall beside them showering them in debris. Zuko quickly stepped in front of Katara, shielding her from most of the onslaught of the falling debris caused by the boulder. Sokka's question about why he was not in chains was left hanging between them.
"Not important right now Sokka. We need to help Aang," Katara replied urgently as she stood up from her spot. "You go help Aang, I will distract General Fong."
Zuko did not miss that Katara had left him out of the plan. But he followed close behind her as she began running across the field straight at General Fong.
Sokka, his boomerang in hand, made his way toward Aang, who was locked in a fierce struggle against the relentless earthbenders. Aang was doing his best to defend himself, but the odds were overwhelming.
"General Fong!" Katara's voice rang out, diverting the general's focus away from Aang. She directed a water whip at him, but he skillfully deflected it, bending the earth to absorb the water.
Zuko unleashed a barrage of flames at the general but still weakened from his time in the dungeon, his efforts proved feeble. The general effortlessly deflected the flames and retaliated by bending a column of earth that struck Zuko's ribs, sending him tumbling backward. He rolled when he landed, trying to disperse the impact. Gritting his teeth against the pain, Zuko pushed himself back up, determined to keep fighting despite his weakened state.
As he moved to rejoin Katara he felt something enclose his wrists binding them tightly together behind him, and then the sensation repeated around his ankles, causing him to stumble and fall again. Rolling onto his side he watched with helplessness as General Fong called out to the Avatar.
"You might be able to outrun me Avatar, but she cannot." General Fong hollered at Aang, bringing everyone's focus to Katara standing before him.
The soldiers under General Fong's command halted their attack on Aang, who now momentarily free from their relentless assault, gasped for breath, and attempted to regain his footing.
General Fong's face contorted with a malicious determination as he directed his earthbending prowess toward Katara. He raised his hands, and the ground beneath her began to churn and twist, creating a spiraling vortex of earth and stone that wrapped around her like an unyielding cage and began pulling her down into the ground.
Desperation welled up within Zuko as he fought against his own restraints. The intense flames in his eyes flared to life once more as he summoned the flames running through his veins. Breathing deep he opened his mouth and unleashed a stream of fire towards the general as he pulled against the restraints around his wrists.
The intensity of Zuko's firebending blazed to life with a ferocious brilliance, Flames roared from his mouth in a searing torrent; illuminating the battlefield with their fiery fury. The blistering heat surged towards General Fong, a raging inferno of orange and red that bore down on him with relentless force.
Caught off guard by Zuko's sudden, explosive counterattack, General Fong has only a fraction of a second to react. He raised a hastily formed earthen shield, but it was too late. The scorching flames engulfed the shield, causing it to sizzle and crack under the overwhelming heat.
Zuko's relentless assault weakened the earthbender's concentration. The restraints around his wrists began to smolder and then finally gave way, freeing his hands. In a swift motion, Zuko extinguished the roaring stream of fire as he broke the restraints around his ankles. Jumping to his feet he lunged forward to confront the general.
And as he readied a volley of flames he caught movement in his right eye, causing him to drop to the ground again as a large boulder hurtled through the air at him. He found himself on the defense as seven soldiers surged forward to fight him, defending their general.
"You could save her." General Fong's voice reverberated in Zuko's ears. But this time the words were directed at the Avatar.
The battlefield descended into chaos again as Zuko grappled with the soldiers that surrounded him. Fire clashed against earth and brawn met agility as he fought to get to the general. His movements were swift and determined, each fire blast calculated to ward off the soldiers closing in on him. But the odds were against him now, and with each passing moment, his energy waned. Sweat trickled down his brow, and his muscles ached from the relentless struggle.
In the midst of the skirmish, Zuko's gaze continuously sought out Katara, who was still ensnared in the earthbending trap. She was being dragged deeper into the ground; her face contorted with effort as she fought to break free. Aang, kneeling before General Fong, was pleading for her release, desperation in his eyes.
As General Fong's cruel ultimatum echoed through the battlefield, Zuko's heart pounded with a mix of determination and fear. He could not let anything happen to Katara, he had made a vow. Sending a volley of flames at two soldiers blocking his path he took a note from Katara's book and turned the flames into haphazardly shaped whips of flame pushing at the men to move them from his path, creating a brief opening.
Ignoring his exhaustion, Zuko sprinted towards the vortex of earth that held Katara captive, his mind racing to find a way to free her.
When suddenly, she was gone.
