A Fool's Bonds
Chapter 7
-Aizawa-
"Ah! Aizawa!" Nezu beamed brightly as Aizawa shuffled into the rodent's office, his expression all different kinds of tired "What brings you here today?"
"You wanted me to update you if Midoriya formed any other Arcana Bonds." Aizawa slumped into a seat, sipping from one of his juice pouches. He wasn't surprised in all honesty. Nezu was a curious creature by nature and a quirk with the kind of varied potential as Midoriya's was enough to make the super intelligent Chimera near salivate.
"Ooooooh!" Nezu clapped excitedly as he poured himself some more tea "So, who has he formed a bond with now?"
"Two actually." Aizawa groaned, "One towards the end of the day yesterday after classes, once you were already gone. The other was done after school but both new bonds are in his class."
"Details Aizawa, I need details and data." Nezu urged, passing a cup over for Aizawa to drink.
"Well, I suppose I'll start with the one made after classes. It's less…complicated." Aizawa fished out his phone, noting Nezu still for only a brief moment at the mention of 'complications'. "Mina Ashido, Arcana is 'The Sun'." Aizawa pulled up the Arcana description as Nezu pulled up Ashido's file "Upright represents positivity, fun, warmth, success, and vitality."
"I can see why that wasn't the one you formed a bond with." Nezu grinned impishly as Aizawa glared, silently thankful that neither Hizashi nor Nemuri were there right now.
"Reversed it represents the inner child, feeling down, or overly optimistic." Aizawa finished up the first one as Nezu pulled up the girl's file.
"Hmm." Nezu hummed as he sipped his tea "Not the best academically but still enough to pass our test. No real black marks on her record but her old teachers did all note that she had a habit of butting into fights between other students to diffuse the situation. Often using her upbeat and fun-loving personality to lower any tension to end the matter without any punches being thrown." Aizawa knew the rodent was mocking him about someone weaponizing 'fun' for a heroic fashion, he just knew it.
"And what's the form young Midoriya gained from her?" Nezu was eager. It was honestly scary, Aizawa hadn't seen him this excited over someone's quirk for a long time.
"He hasn't told me yet." Shota admitted with a shrug, "Said he wanted to show it off during the Hero training today if he could."
"Oh poo." Nezu pouted "I wanted to know. Anyway, onto the other one. You said it was more…'complicated'?"
"This one spoke to Midoriya and his bondee. Beyond the basic arcana forming speech." He'd also had Midoriya right down each one just to be safe. It helped that they were dramatic, and he was positive those slogans would pair well with figurines and such of the forms for future merchandise. He might hate the spotlight, but he'd picked up some things on marketing oneself from the headaches he for some reason called his friends.
"It what?" Nezu's eyes narrowed, wary at that concept. Something he didn't blame the man on. Legends like Vlad 'Dracula' Tepes or Kronos from Greek myth? Having their powers would be a boon as a hero but if the figure inside was sentient enough to push back it could be dangerous.
"It said that Midoriya wasn't strong enough to call on their power yet. That it would be a gamble with his life if he did so." Shota scowled at that, torn between gratitude of the save from said form and displeasure at any danger to his student.
"What was the Arcana and who triggered it?" Nezu demanded, seemingly deciding to focus on what could be studied for now.
"Eijiro Kirishima, Arcana 'The Star'." Aizawa answered, "Upright it represents hope, faith, purpose, renewal, and spirituality. Reversed it represents lack of faith, despair, self-trust, and disconnection."
"Hmm, I can see that." Nezu rapidly went through Kirishima's file "According to his prior teachers, the boy had a great deal of self confidence issues, 'lack of faith' in himself. Something your student went through as well if I'm not mistaken?"
"He did." Shota nodded, "Didn't believe in himself or his quirk."
"Well, hopefully those three will help each other grow." Nezu nodded to himself as he put the files away, pulling up some security cameras to watch the 1-A Heroics course as they were standing in front of All Might for the day's exercise. Midoriya stood out given he was the only one to carry a weapon such as a sword as part of his hero uniform.
"Hmmm, a little basic." Nezu tilted his head as he observed Midoriya's uniform. The base was black with silver lining, the outline of the muscles Midoriya had been building clear. He had armored boots on his lets and atop the black body suit, which had armor plating woven into it, he had a green coat of sorts, the fabric clinging tight to his body. To finish it off, he had a pair of blades at his hip, a Katana and a Tanto.
"He felt that given how outlandish most hero uniforms are, basic in and of itself would stand out more." Aizawa smirked in amusement at that notion, "Plus his transformations are flashy enough in and of themselves."
"True enough." Nezu shrugged as they listened to All Might finish explaining the 'nuclear warhead' exercise and start randomly assigning the teams.
"Oh…this will be something." Nezu was already brewing more tea even as Aizawa felt his headache growing.
-Izuku-
"So, you were part of the recommendation exam with Todoroki yeah?" Izuku looked over at his partner, Yaoyorozu, trying very hard not to stare too hard at 'certain areas', "Anything you can share that will help?"
"Of course." The tall girl nodded, "If you'll do the same for that 'Bakugo' person. I noticed he seemed to clearly know you." Izuku grimaced at that.
"Yeah there's…history there." Izuku frowned, shaking his head "But he's definitely a dangerous one to fight. His quirk is that he sweats a substance that's similar to Nitroglycerin except he has a degree of control over it. It'll still ignite if hit by something reactive, but he can detonate it at will even if it's no longer on him. Those grenades on his uniform are something he's been thinking of and designing for years, special containers that can store excess sweat to release a bigger blast later. He has a decidedly low opinion of me and doesn't work well with others. If I had to guess, then he'll probably demand Todoroki stay with the bomb while he charges off himself wanting to fight me one on one."
"I see." Yaoyorozu nodded, seemingly grateful for the in-depth breakdown. "Todoroki has similar teamwork skills from what I've seen of him. He's very standoffish even when he was approached by other recommendation exam applicants. He has access to both ice and fire from what I've heard but he only demonstrated ice at the quirk demonstration test. I'd say he has some sort of personal issue with his flames. He's liable to try and do this on his own as well."
"Playing them against each other might be wise." Izuku nodded thoughtfully, "And you already saw my three primary forms at the test. I can't use the Star one I got from Kirishima safely yet, but I managed to figure out what I got from Mina, but I'll save that for when it's needed." His grin was eager "Just be ready to move if you hear me call out the Sun, alright?"
"Understood." Yaoyorozu nodded before frowning, "I assume that something like having one of your 'Momotaro' animals touch the bomb will not count?"
"It will not." All Might's voice filled their radios, confirming the clarification to the rules for them.
"Meaning having you make a paint bomb and throwing it into the bomb room is out too." Izuku grumbled.
"Pardon?" All Might sounded confused.
"Well, you said the things you make are formed from your lipids yeah?" Izuku looked over at Yaoyorozu who seemed surprised he'd remembered that detail, "That means they essentially are part of you to some degree."
"Ah, I see what you mean." All Might laughs "And while you two had good creative thinking it would defeat the point of the exercise."
"Dang it." Izuku frowned "Alright, Yaoyorozu are you limited to just solids? And do they have to come out fully?"
"What do you mean 'come out fully'?" Yaoyorozu frowned in confusion "And I'm unsure about gasses."
"Well, I figured if you knew what smoke was 'made' of you could make smokescreens for cover. Even recreate something like Midnight's quirk or laughing gas for big AOE attacks. Might want a gas mask first if you try that though." The second bit was added as an afterthought.
"And by 'come out fully'?" Yaoyorozu prompted again, even as she held out a finger and frowned in concentration, possibly trying to make a gas. Izuku pulled out one of his notebooks, hand a blur as he sketched out a rough idea of his thought to convey the idea better to his partner.
"Well, if you could make a gun barrel or something similar extend from your finger to help aim. Couldn't you, in theory, use it with your quirk to shoot? Make the bullet whether it's rubber, a tranquilizer, or whatever you need and shoot as needed. I don't know how fast things come out or if you have control of that but if you can make gasses then the barrel would help as a pressurized gun type of thing."
"That's brilliant Midoriya!" Yaoyorozu's eyes sparkled at the potential new use of her quirk, "I-"
"The strategizing period is now over!" All Might's voice rang out through the PA system and their radios, "Heroes may now enter the building."
"We'll have to discuss quirks and tactics more later." Yaoyorozu insisted eagerly before the two but on their game faces and approached the building…which rapidly froze over.
"Well…" Izuku blinked "Someone's dramatic." Taking a deep breath, he transformed into Momotaro, using the Fool form's greater strength and better blade to smash and slash open the door, cutting away any ice that obstructed them. Behind him, he could hear Yaoyorozu muttering to herself as she continued to experiment and keep her eyes peeled. Their progress was thankfully not as hindered as he feared, his creative partner making some ice walking spikes that could attach to their shoes.
The pops alerted him of the coming threat first, the screams of "DEKU!" only confirmed what he was sure of as Izuku leapt back, avoiding the opening right hook of his opponent.
"Pretty chilly in here." Izuku grinned, wanting Bakugo riled up so the demolitionist would make mistakes "You guys forget to pay your heating bill?"
"Fucking Deku!" Bakugo snarled, "I'm gonna-!" he was cut off by a rubber bullet being fired at him, only the blond's insane reflexes allowing him to deflect it with his gauntlet.
"Forget about me?" Yaoyorozu grinned confidently, her pointer finger showing the barrel Izuku had thought of earlier, "And thanks for the idea Midoriya."
"No problem partner!" Izuku grinned at her, his grin quickly faltering as his ears picked up more sound from down the hall "We're about to have company."
"Damnit Half and Half!" Bakugo heard it too clearly, "I told your pasty ass to stay with the bomb!"
"I don't need you to win this." Todoroki's tone was as cold as his ice as he aimed an arm at Izuku and Yaoyorozu, "Surrender or be frozen."
"Now Monkey!" Izuku shouted as his two opponents whirled around only to see nothing there, "Made you look!" Izuku grinned as his pheasant shot out at them, it being the only one able to move properly on the frozen ground.
"Fucking Deku!" Bakugo aimed his grenade gauntlet and put his finger to the firing pin.
"Bakugo don't!" All Might's voice shouted in panic over the PA system.
"Relax, it ain't full!" Bakugo's grin was wide with excitement from the fight, "They'll be fine!"
"I said I don't need you!" Todoroki tried to send another wave of ice just as Bakugo fired, the ice displacing Bakugo's footing as the shot went up and wide, blowing out the floors above and behind Izuku. A gaping hole was left, the head from the explosions having melted the ice in the area as steam filled the ruined building, even if it was rapidly dissipating. On part of the floor above he could see the bomb, that part having staid standing.
"I have to thank you guys." Izuku did his best to keep his smile up even if he wanted to wet himself at the size of that explosion, one bigger than even Bakugo had been expecting judging by the blond's expression.
"Thanking us?" Todoroki asked with a scowl, the dual haired ice user seemingly having issues with his partner's quirk.
"Now I have room to show off my newest trick." As he spoke, Izuku transformed back to his base state, "Number Nineteen, The Sun!" Izuku was once again concealed by blue flames that grew…and grew…and grew some more "Quetzalcoatl!" his cry and flared wings blew away the remaining smoke and steam. The sun god of Aztec myth, the feathered serpent, lord of death and rebirth. His body was now a massive green snake, scales gleaming and fangs sharp. What stood out though were the colorful wings, feathers assorted colors like the light of the sun was refracting out in every way it could through them.
"Stupid Deku!" Bakugo snarled, "You're too big to fight in here like that. All you did was make yourself a bigger target!"
"I know this form is too big to fight inside." Izuku smirked even as his extended out of the building's massive new hole, "But I do make an excellent distraction do I not?" that was all the two needed to realize what Izuku had been doing as their head's snapped towards the bomb just as Yaoyorozu placed her palm upon it.
"Hero team wins!" All Might's voice carried out as Bakugo and Todoroki seemed unable to properly process the fact that they lost.
"Midoriya!" Yaoyorozu hurried back over to him as he returned to his base form, meeting her at the stairs she'd climbed up to get to the bomb, the two just lucky those had survived the blast. "We did it! We-" her next words were cut off as she slipped on some remaining ice, Izuku having to hastily move to catch her in his arms. And as he held her, making sure his partner didn't fall, they were enveloped in cerulean flames.
AN: Momo's the pairing, everyone knew she'd be getting an Arcana. You'll find out which arcana and everything next time as next chapter will be more focused on Momo and from her perspective. Give her a bit of time to shine.
