The world had stopped spinning, just for a moment. Gray eyes looked between Chat Noir, the black clad Cat superhero, and Ladybug, the super villain feeling weak at his knees. This couldn't be the end. But, with nothing left in him, no way to escape, it was.
Ladybug's yo-yo wrapped around the man, squeezing his arms into his body. "It's all over, Hawkmoth." Her heart raced with excitement. Once this was over, she didn't have to worry about watching over Paris anymore. She could finally live a normal, teenage life. She had dreamed of this moment for years now.
He scoffed, attempting to stand, but his body was too weak. He was too weak. "Now, it wouldn't be fun if we ended it like this, now would it?" His eyes searched for any amount of mercy from the two heroines' eyes, but there was none left for the man who had destroyed Paris. Killed so many without an ounce of sympathy, and without a doubt would do it again.
"Ah, but the fun end here, Sockmoth!" Chat said, mockingly, plucking the butterfly miraculous from his chest, tossing the broach to Ladybug, who caught it with her free hand.
And then, the world started to move again. In a dizzying array of cheers and boos and… a look of sheer horror on Chat Noir's face. He shook his head, regaining his smile, cheering for Ladybug before hoisting himself away without looking back. Leaving Ladybug alone to finish the last job they should've done together.
…
Marinette woke up in a cold sweat. That memory had become horrifying for her, specifically the look on Chat Noir's face when he had seen Hawkmoth. The look of sheer terror as if he had just been stabbed should've been the cue for Ladybug, her, to make sure he was ok. But she didn't. Something she was sure Chat would hold against her forever.
She looked around her small, shared dorm room. Most of her things were gone, already mailed her things to her parents so she could have a place to rest before she found an apartment. London was amazing, and a beautiful place to, but Paris was her home and she couldn't hide from her trauma much longer.
She had done all four years of fashion school and now was ready to start again, this time as a simple fashion designer not noteworthy of name. No superpowers, no supervillains, just plain old Marinette Dupain-Cheng. It would be relaxing. Different, but just what she had needed in Paris. Hawkmoth's final fight was during her senior year of high school, and it was a miracle in itself that she had graduated with how much she was gone doing superhero work.
She got up, quietly walking to the bathroom sink and splashing her face with water. She wanted to forget Hawkmoth ever existed. But the experiences, the trauma, it plagued her mind and constantly came back in nightmares.
"Marinette, not again," a tired voice came, a phone flashlight lighting up the area. It belonged to her roommate, Lilly. Lilly was a pretty girl, with red hair that was always in a braid that reached the back of her mid-thighs, grassy green eyes, and freckles just about everywhere. "You can't keep waking up like this. It's 2. Just let yourself rest."
"I know, I know. I just had a nightmare, that's all,' Marinette responded, pulling her loose hair back into a messy bun.
"You need to see a therapist about this or something. This is almost an every night thing, girlie. Take some melatonin, I got some if you want it?"
"Thanks, Lilly, but I have to wake up in a couple hours to make my flight. Sorry for waking you."
It was so close. Seeing her friends and family again was going to be amazing, and excitement felt her body. But, also, a sense of dread. Adrien Agreste being the cause of it. His father had turned out to be Hawkmoth and he refused to talk to anyone about it. Worst of all, he had to see his mother in a state that her body shouldn't have been in after how long she had been dead. After a proper burial for his mother, Adrien had simply vanished. He didn't say goodbye, he didn't even leave a note. Marinette missed him so much, his voice, his eyes, his friendship. The one thing she wouldn't be able to get back.
