Chapter 8: The Ball:

Grigori's POV:

I was searching for my wife. "Where have you been," I asked.

"I was just showing our guest around," says Varushkina.

"Well, the first royal ball since our marriage is coming," I said, "I hope you're ready."

"Oh, you know I am," says Varushkina, "Donkeyskin, be sure to have everything prepared."

"Yes, Grand Duchess," says Donkeyskin.

Varushkina then kisses me and walks away.

"You will have help," I said.

"I don't think your wife likes me," says Donkeyskin.

"In her defense, none of us know anything about you," I said.

"Fair," says Donkeyskin. I then stepped out.

. . .

It was time for the ball. Everyone was dancing. Varushkina and I danced, but then...

"I suddenly have this headache," says Varushkina, "I must go." She then leaves.

"Get some rest," I said.

"I hope she's alright," says Grafov.

Then this mysterious maiden came in. Her dress was all the colors of the sky.

"Who is she," I asked. I then realized Grafov was missing.

Grafov approached the maiden, but then returned to me. "She's not my type," says Grafov.

"So, she turned you down," I said.

"I'm afraid so," says Grafov, "she'd probably prefer someone like you, the Grand Duke."

"Don't be ridiculous," I said.

The maiden then walked over to me. "May I have this dance," she asks.

"UUUUUUUUUmmmmmmmmm... I'm flattered," I said, "but I'm a married man."

"Well, where is your wife," asks the maiden.

"In bed," I said, "she has a headache."

"Well, it's just one dance," says the maiden.

"I suppose it is."

We then danced.
