Word traveled fast around the building to other sections of the 5-4 precinct about the couch and not even 2 hours later a sheepish looking very pregnant patrol officer in uniform tentatively walks into the Detective bull pen hesitantly looking around.
Walking out of his office at the same time, Jamie notices her "Officer Simcoe." He greets causing Eddie to look up and over from her desk "Everything okay?"
"Um…I um…" Officer Simcoe hesitates "I heard there was maybe a couch up here?" she hopefully inquires.
Chapter 157: You Win Some, You Lose Some
"Oh now who's making threats!" Langley laughs "But good luck with that and there is no valid reason you can give to deny my request…" he taunts "In fact, I think Janko will be my new right hand." He needles hoping to get an even bigger rise out of Jamie and it begins to work as Jamie runs a hand through his hair in pure frustration – his mind absolutely racing as he tries to figure out a way to handle this because over his dead body would his wife ever be put in that position again.
He had to find a way to stop this transfer from happening he thinks when suddenly Jessie in her stroller gets a little fussy so while Eddie rushes over to try to fix whatever is wrong before full out crying begins, Jamie looks at his wife and daughter and realization hits him. He shifts his eyes from them out into, and across the bullpen to the lactation room and slowly a smile begins to form on his face.
"Hey let me ask you something – Ray…" Jamie purposefully addresses as he leans closer to the phone casually crossing his arms and letting them rest on his desk "You got a lactation room over there at the 6-2?"
"A what?" Ray questions back.
Jamie's smile widens "Didn't think so." He notes as he turns his attention back to Eddie to watch her adjust Jessie's blanket around her "Request denied on the grounds that you don't have a lactation room."
At hearing that, Eddie lifts and turns her head to look back at her husband in surprise.
Jamie silently shrugs at her indicating he hopes Langley buys what he's selling.
"Excuse me?" Langley unhappily tosses back as Eddie holds up her hand and crosses her fingers praying Jamie is right before turning her attention back to Jessie "I can take this all the way up…"
"Take it where ever you want." Jamie interrupts as Jessie peacefully settles back in for her nap "But my decision will stand – unless you want to slash your department budgets to get one installed – a lactation room I mean." Jamie clarifies "Maybe have a chat with your Captain to see if he'll go for it but it did take a lot of extra – and unpaid - work and convincing on my part but I'm sure you're up for that."
"Why would I do that?" Langley's totally confused voice sounds through the phone causing Jamie, Eddie, Danny and Maria all to simultaneous realize that Langley has no idea Eddie just had a baby so instead of answering the question, Jamie just runs with it "Wait how many pregnant or recently returned or returning from Mat leave officers do you have over there at the 6-2 anyway?"
"What does that matter?" Langley's annoyed and impatient voice questions.
"Oh it matters." Jamie insists "But never mind I have the list." He continues as he moves to open a separate file on his computer "That's how we are prioritizing the installations." he patronizingly explains into the speaker phone knowing Langley has no clue what he's talking about or why "Okay let's see…" he narrates as he scrolls down the list "Oh. None." He breathes out as a smirk momentarily graces his face before sucking in a breath of air "Yeah sorry…" He then insincerely apologizes "…but that puts the 6-2 near the bottom of the list of installations so if Sergeant Reagan moves over there that complicates things for 1PP and the lactation room roll out committee but hey, feel free to put in your request…" Jamie continues "I'm sure they will have no problem rearranging EVERYTHING for one officer instead of just taking the much simpler route of denying your request and finding you another Sergeant that doesn't require one."
A dead silence comes over the phone line as Jamie, Eddie, Danny and Maria wait to see if Langley can put all the pieces of what Jamie is saying together.
"Wait..." Langley slowly and finally realizes "...Janko had a kid?"
"Yeah." Jamie pompously confirms "We did. Cute little girl – but don't worry, we don't expect a gift."
More silence.
"Oh." Langley finally scoffs out "So what you're saying is Janko gets special treatment now because she's a Reagan? Well isn't that nice!"
"No." Jamie rejects "What I'm saying is it's inefficient to transfer any officer out a precinct already set up to accommodate her court mandated needs – did I mention the NYPD got sued and lost over the lack of lactation rooms so 1PP is currently being very careful about how they proceed with this and transferring a new Mother from one precinct that has a lactation room to one that does not when the transfer itself is not deemed essential or even necessary is not something 1PP wants to do right now and any commanding officer worth their bars should realize that but hey, like I said – feel free to take this higher and see what kind of response you get."
There is another moment of silence over the phone before Langley spits out "You think you're so smart don't you Reagan?"
"Clearly smarter than you." Jamie satisfactorily tosses back "Now I have real work to take care of so you have yourself a nice day." he adds before simply lifting the receiver of the phone and then placing it back down to disconnect the call.
"Clearly smarter than you?" Danny chastises at his brother "You just couldn't quit while you were ahead?"
"He's right." Maria agrees with a sigh "You had him dead to rights but with that little dig at the end, it wouldn't surprise me if he does try to take it further."
"He won't." Jamie counters "Ray Langley might be a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them. Right now he's working through in his mind how much more work and headache he'll have if he insists on Eddie transferring."
"So what is Langley to you two anyway?" Danny queries as he looks back and forth between his brother and sister in law.
"And what is a Ray-lette?" Maria adds.
"A pain in my ass." Jamie replies to Danny.
"Me." Eddie replies to Maria causing both Maria and Danny to look at her in even more confusion.
"Look…" Eddie begins to explain "…it was while Jamie and I were still just partners – what?" she questions as she looks at her husband "2 years into the job together?"
Jamie thinks back then nods his head in agreement so Eddie continues on
"Langley was our training Sergeant and he well, put the moves on me."
"Oh." Maria flatly notes in complete understanding of Eddie's situation.
"Really?" Danny questions unimpressed as he immediately understands the ramifications of what that could mean.
In reply, Eddie simply nods her head in confirmation so Danny sighs and turns his attention to his brother "And you didn't take kindly to that." Danny deduces in understanding.
"What I didn't take kindly too…" Jamie clarifies "…was Eddie suddenly trying to hide how uncomfortable she felt around him – to me that threw up all kinds of red flags."
"And at the time, I of course asked him to stay out of it." Eddie chimes in.
"Which he didn't." Danny quickly and knowingly again deduces.
"No I didn't." Jamie arrogantly confirms "And I'm glad I didn't because…"
"It turns out I wasn't the only one." Eddie adds with a sigh "And Jamie…" She continues as she looks at her husband and a small grateful little smile appears on her face as she remembers how Jamie put Langley in his place "…well Jamie being Jamie took it upon himself to gather us all together and correct the situation."
"Oh this oughta be good!" Danny quips in eager anticipation at hearing that.
"How?" Maria curiously inquires.
"He was way out of line using his position to pressure his female trainees." Jamie explains "So like Eddie said, I gathered some of his trainees together – strength in numbers right - and called him out on it before heavily suggesting he transfer to Staten Island."
At hearing that, Danny opens his mouth – at first wanting to commend his brother for his initiative – but then a frown of disappointment appears on his face "Why does everyone bash Staten Island?"
"You want to work out of there?" Jamie tosses back.
"No." Danny admits.
"And you named them the Ray-lettes?" Maria inquires to Jamie confused as she tries to move the conversation along.
"No." Eddie sighs "We named ourselves that."
"Oh." Maria accepts.
Silence as everyone thinks.
"So actually…" Danny suddenly realizes as he again looks at his brother "Langley's not a pain in your ass, YOU…" he emphasizes as he points at Jamie "…are the pain in Langley's ass."
Jamie tosses that around in his mind "I guess it depends who you ask."
"Well!" Danny quips in satisfaction that everything has worked out as he stands "You've now bested him what? Three times?"
"I'm not really keeping score." Jamie dismisses.
Danny and Maria look over to see Eddie hold up three fingers, nod her head in confirmation and silently but proudly mouth 'Three times.'
Jamie looks over and frowns "I see you doing that you know."
"And that's our cue!" Danny quips as he heads for the door with Maria hot on his heels "Yup." She completely agrees as the partners open the door and disappear out the office faster then one can say "Freeze!"
"Well that's one way to clear a room." Jamie notes.
"So you really think he'll back off?" Eddie hesitantly but hopefully queries.
"He better." Jamie replies "Because there is no way I'm letting you work with him day in and day out – and I don't care how that sounds."
"You'll get no argument from me there." Eddie agrees when suddenly Jamie lets out a little chuckle.
"What?" Eddie prompts.
"I'll reiterate that there is no way you are working with Langley…" Jamie repeats "…but hypothetically, if it did happen, you would make his life a living hell."
"What?" Eddie questions as she looks at her husband like he has two heads "He's a Lieutenant and I'm just a Sergeant."
"Just?" Jamie challenges "Eddie, you're not the same officer you were when this all originally went down with Langley." He reminds her "You know where the line is and where and when to use that to your advantage to push back - you're no shrinking violet."
Eddie thinks about her husband's words…
"I would be like a broken record about the lack of a lactation room." Eddie notes "And oh if I got even just a whiff of a new chapter of Ray-lettes out there - well!" She indignantly huffs out appalled.
Jamie proudly smiles at his wife "See there you go." He muses "In fact, now that I think about it…" he jokes "...Langley was right about one thing - the 6-2 is closer to home."
For a moment Eddie looks at her husband processing his words before a look of realization appears on her face "Maybe we could both put in for a transfer!" She jokes playing along before a silence befalls the couple as they find themselves both actually pondering that.
"But not with Langley there." Jamie suddenly reiterates.
"No." Eddie immediately agrees.
More silence.
"But if he weren't…" Eddie slowly adds "The 6-2 would indeed be closer to home and to Jessie."
Slowly Jamie turns to look at his wife.
"What?" Eddie defends "I'm just saying."
Jamie blows out a breath of air "You'd actually want to leave the 5-4 and move to the 6-2?"
"No." Eddie rejects as her eyes drift back over to her sleeping daughter "I mean the reality is Langley IS at the 6-2 and they don't have a lactation room and I am happy working here with you and Danny and Maria and everyone else. I like working Major Crimes…" She promises "…but…" she also adds "…it's an interesting idea because, as we just said, we can't deny that the 6-2 is closer to home – look all I'm saying is maybe one day – down the line – possibly..." She waivers.
"True." Jamie admits "I suppose we can't work together our whole careers."
At hearing that Eddie raises a curious eyebrow "So you would be okay with that? With me – hypothetically…" she reiterates "Moving to a different precinct?"
"Hey, it's your career." Jamie replies "We've already decided we shouldn't work together out in the field so if / when the time comes, I'm open to talking about it."
At first Eddie looks at her husband mighty impressed but then a smirk plays on her face.
"What?" Jamie prompts.
"You remember why it took us 5 years to get together in the first place right?" Eddie prompts "We didn't want to STOP working together."
"I know." Jamie admits "But people grow, things change and you have to admit it all worked out."
"Very perceptive of you there Mr. Reagan." Eddie playfully returns.
Jamie shrugs in deflection "I do what I can."
Eddie smiles at her husband.
"Sergeant Reagan!" A happy female voice suddenly sounds so turning towards the sound, Jamie and Eddie see Officer Simcoe standing in the office doorway.
"I heard you were in the building…" Simcoe begins "…and I just wanted to come and say thank you – just thank you." She sincerely and a little emotionally offers "Having spent the last 4 months working and trying to breastfeed - having to use the locker room or even my car to pump…" she explains "…and now…" she adds as she just gestures out across the bullpen to the lactation room trying to find the perfect words to express her true appreciation.
"Oh don't thank me." Eddie deflects as she offers Simcoe a warm smile in understanding "Thank Lieutenant Reagan." she instructs as she turns and gestures to Jamie "This was 100% him."
A look of true surprise appears on Simcoe's face "It was?"
"From start to finish." Eddie proudly adds so Simcoe turns to look at Jamie "Thank you." She again very sincerely offers.
"You're welcome." Jamie returns "And if there is anything about the room you find doesn't work for you, let me know okay?"
A truly appreciative smile appears on Simcoe's face at his offer "I will."
"Good." Jamie accepts.
Beat.
"Anything else?" Jamie prompts Simcoe.
"No Sir." Simcoe happily replies as she just continues to stand there.
"Then dismissed." Jamie prompts.
"Okay!" Simcoe accommodatingly adds before turning to walk away.
"See." Eddie prompts with a wide smile as both she and Jamie watch Simcoe walk away "They don't hate you, they luuuuuuve you!"
Suddenly a disgruntled looking Detective appears in the doorway "Hey Lieutenant…" he unhappily greets "What's this memo we all just got about cut backs?"
Jamie internally cringes as he looks at the Detective then turns to look at Eddie "You were saying?"
Eddie sighs in defeat "You win some, you lose some."
