Over the years, their relationship evolved quietly and discreetly. Nobody ever found out about their romantic involvement. They faced numerous challenges, including the time when Ba'al took Jack prisoner. His recovery was slow, and it took even longer for him to open up to Sam. Eventually, he shared with her that Daniel had offered him the chance to ascend, similar to what he had done, but he refused, unwilling to leave her. When Jack revealed this, Sam spent an entire day crying and threatening to resign.
During a mission to a city called Vis Uban, SG-1 encountered a de-ascended Daniel without memories of his past life. After a period of recovery, Daniel rejoined SG-1. Despite Sam's close bond with him, she never divulged the details of her relationship with Jack. When she said no one could know, she meant no one. As time passed, her role with SG-16 lessened, and her work in her lab became more concentrated. She participated less frequently in off-world missions, focusing on scientific endeavors. Area 51 showed interest in recruiting her, and she underwent scans, but Sam remained committed to her work at the SGC.
Their relationship encountered numerous hurdles, from the tumultuous events aboard the Prometheus to Sam's fierce battle against the Kull warrior and the heartbreaking loss of Janet. Jack's repeated exposure to the Ancient repository took its toll on their romance, leaving Sam to struggle alone to bring him back from the brink and cope with her anguish. Despite these challenges, their connection deepened, but when Fifth abducted Sam while Jack lay in stasis in Antarctica, their bond faced severe strain. After Thor succeeded in awakening him, Jack was filled with dread, fearing the worst for Sam.
However, their love endured, and both Jack and Sam recovered. Jack was eventually promoted to Brigadier General and took command of the SGC, while Sam earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Her father's death was a heavy blow, but after defeating the Replicators and thwarting Anubis, Jack decided it was time to address their relationship officially. He wanted to marry Sam and stop hiding.
As they contemplated a life together, another revelation added joy and complexity to their journey. Despite all their precautions, Sam discovered that she was pregnant. The news brought mixed emotions but solidified their commitment to each other and their future as a family.
"You are what?" Jack asked, confusion etched across his face.
They were now in his living room. Sam had entered his office at the SGC and urgently told him she needed to talk. With her back to the security cameras, she mouthed the word 'home' and swiftly left. Jack stood there momentarily, staring at the closed door, then quickly called Walter, informing him that he needed to go early and any urgent matters should be directed to his cell phone. Grabbing his hat and briefcase, he left the base and drove swiftly to his house, noting that her car was no longer in the parking lot.
When he entered, he found Sam pacing in the living room.
"What's wrong, honey?" he asked, genuine worry etched on his face.
Sam stopped pacing and turned to face him, tears streaming down her cheeks as she passed a hand across her wet face.
"Jack," she began, biting her lip, "I'm sorry, Jack. I'm so sorry."
Jack's alarm intensified. He moved to her side in two quick strides, holding her.
"What is it, Sam? Tell me!" he urged.
Jack's mind raced through various scenarios, fearing the worst. Was she breaking up with him? Was she sick? Had someone discovered their secret?
"I'm pregnant," she said slowly. "I'm sorry, Jack. I'm so sorry," she repeated, her arms around his neck.
Jack took a deep breath, not expecting the revelation.
"You are what?" he asked, looking directly into her tear-streaked face.
She nodded, confirming her words. Jack kissed her passionately, the joy evident on his face. When he finally stopped, she was left breathless and dizzy.
"Are you sure?" he asked, gently touching her belly.
"Yes, I've done a blood test on myself," she replied, wetting her lips.
"Oh," Jack said, looking more closely at her expression. Realization dawned—she wasn't as thrilled as he was. "Is this a problem, honey? You don't want the baby?" he asked cautiously.
Sam blushed even more.
"Of course, I want the baby, Jack. But we can't have a baby. You know that. We'll be immediately court-martialed," she explained, burying her head in his shoulder.
Finally, Jack understood her concern.
"I'll take care of that, don't worry," he assured her, kissing her head. "I don't want you to worry about that anymore," he added, holding her tightly.
Sam kissed his neck, her emotions still raw.
"I want this baby very much, Jack," she admitted.
Jack's heartbeat quickened.
"Me too, honey. Me too," he said, realizing the challenges they would face but also feeling an overwhelming sense of joy and determination. He would take care of everything, and no one would stand in his way of having a family with Sam. No one.
So, one day later, Jack found himself in Washington D.C., facing a meeting with the new Head of Homeworld Security, his former CO, General George Hammond. In a brief but heartfelt conversation, Jack explained that he could no longer remain as the CO of the SGC. He admitted that his feelings for Lt. Colonel Carter had intensified, and they wanted to pursue a personal relationship. Jack requested either a reassignment or retirement, making it clear that he intended to marry her, regardless of the Air Force's response. It wasn't negotiable.
General Hammond, seasoned and understanding, wasn't entirely surprised by Jack's request. He made phone calls, assuring Jack they needed a few days to handle the matter. The situation was delicate, involving Jack and their Stargate expert, Lt. Colonel Carter. Hammond informed Jack that the issue would be brought to the attention of the President of the United States.
Aware of the matter's sensitivity, Hammond emphasized patience and discretion. He hinted that Sam might also need to come to Washington, D.C., if things got complicated. Jack assured him it wouldn't be an issue. With the wheels set in motion, Jack returned to his hotel and promptly called Sam to share the news. Together, they entered a period of anxious waiting, anticipating the decisions shaping their future.
Back in Hammond's office, Jack was nervous as he awaited the news. General Hammond, having received the Air Force's decision regarding Jack's request, began to lay out the options. He explained that there were two potential solutions for Jack's case. The first option was for Jack to resign and take on a civilian contractor role at the SGC. The second option involved Sam leaving but continuing her work at the SGC as Doctor Samantha Carter. In either case, they would assume civilian status and be required to sign the usual nondisclosure agreement (NDA), but they would retain their high-security clearance.
Jack sighed, a mix of relief and anticipated challenges. He thanked Hammond for the information and expressed his intention to discuss the options with Sam, promising to provide a decision as soon as possible. Hammond, recognizing the delicacy of the situation, emphasized the need for discretion until a final decision was reached.
"It goes without mentioning that until then, you must keep everything within ranks and professional, General," Hammond warned, acknowledging the potential complexities of their situation.
Jack's expression remained composed. They had navigated the intricacies of secrecy and professionalism for years; a few more weeks or months wouldn't pose a problem.
"Of course, Sir," Jack affirmed, acknowledging Hammond's directive.
Shortly after, he boarded the first plane back to Colorado Springs, contemplating the conversations and decisions that awaited him and Sam.
Sam was waiting for him at home, which meant his house. Her house had remained practically uninhabited for years, maintained solely for appearances and the occasional dinner she hosted for SG-16. All her personal belongings, even her bike, were at Jack's house, concealed behind a fake door in his garage. Even Cassie had never figured it out, a testament to Sam's professionalism.
As Jack entered, a small jump echoed in Sam's chest.
"Hi, beautiful," he greeted with his trademark smile.
The pet names, once unusual and met with a raised eyebrow by Sam, had become a familiar part of their relationship over the years. She was now used to the darling, honey, sweetheart, etc. Sam, still seated on the couch, cut to the chase.
"Hey, yourself. Now, tell me with no sugarcoated words, Jack."
Jack, unbuttoning his jacket, playfully remarked, "Romantic as ever," as he joined her on the couch.
Sam's hand on his thigh demanded, "Spill it, General."
Jack continued to smile, giving her a quick kiss.
"So bossy that I'm almost tempted to drag you to the bedroom…" he said.
Sam's raised eyebrow told him that wouldn't be wise at all.
"Fine. One of us has to resign and go civilian. There, no sugarcoat," he admitted.
Sam looked surprised.
"They agreed with us getting married?" she inquired.
Jack nodded.
"Yes, as long as one of us quits the Air Force."
Sam's hand started to move on his thigh.
"Oh," she said, her brain quickly thinking.
The tricky part came: convincing her she should stay while he went civilian.
"Given everything, you should stay, and I should quit," he suggested slowly.
Sam raised her eyebrow again.
"How so?" she immediately questioned.
Jack cleared his throat.
"I've already reached General, honey—much more than I ever dreamed of. And as a civilian, I can continue to be responsible for the SGC, watching your back," he reasoned.
As Jack learned through the years, her raised eyebrow remained in place, which was not a good signal.
"And you want me to continue in the Air Force for what? To become a General? Like you and my father?" she asked, curious.
Pleased that she seemed to agree with him, Jack smiled.
"You'll be a damn good General, honey," he said proudly.
Sam gave him a soft kiss.
"Jack, the love of my life, I'm having a baby. Our baby. That will be my priority, along with you. Not the Air Force. I no longer care about being a General. I care about being a good mother, something I know nothing about because mine died when I was very young. So, you know, I'm terrified about that, by the way," Sam said with a deep sigh.
Swallowing, she continued, "I don't want to worry about missions, promotions, and ranks. I want to worry about doing my job and coming home to my family at the end of the day. Raising our baby. That's all, Jack." She sat on his lap and placed her hands on his shoulders.
Jack swallowed hard, both touched by her words and her position on his lap. She expertly knew how to present a case, and he had few arguments to counter her. To be accurate, he had none.
"Okay," he agreed, tangling his fingers in her hair.
The decision was taken.
Jack informed General Hammond the next day that Sam would leave the Air Force. Jack inquired about expediting the process, expressing the urgency of their situation regarding the marriage. Hammond, already anticipating this, assured him they could proceed with the marriage as soon as the paperwork was completed. In the worst-case scenario, it would take about three weeks. Jack sighed in relief, grateful that they could move forward swiftly.
As the evening approached, Sam and Jack busied themselves with preparations for the dinner they were hosting to share their significant news with Daniel and Teal'c. Jack grilled steaks in the backyard, showcasing his culinary skills. Meanwhile, Sam worked on side dishes and set the dining room table, ensuring everything looked impeccable.
When their guests arrived, the atmosphere was warm and friendly. They exchanged casual conversation over glasses of wine, gradually transitioning into the topic that had brought them together. Neither Teal'c nor Daniel noticed that Sam was drinking water, not wine. The anticipation was palpable as the group settled at the dining table, laden with grilled steaks, roasted vegetables, and a fresh salad.
"So, what's the big news you guys wanted to share?" Daniel asked with a curious smile, sipping his wine.
Jack exchanged a glance with Sam before taking a deep breath.
"Well, we've got some changes on the horizon," he began, looking at Sam, who nodded in agreement.
"We've been discussing our future," Sam added. "And I've decided to leave the Air Force."
Teal'c raised an eyebrow, showing interest.
"Indeed. What led to this unexpected decision, Colonel Carter?"
Sam and Jack exchanged a glance before Jack continued.
"We're getting married. And we thought it would be a good idea to have a more stable life, you know? And I'm not as young as I used to be."
Daniel's eyes widened, surprise and confusion evident on his face.
"Excuse me? You guys are getting married? But…is that allowed?" Daniel asked slowly.
Jack nodded.
"The top brass approved things, and since Sam will no longer be in the Air Force, there's no conflict," he explained.
Daniel's smile widened now.
"That's fantastic news! Finally, I must say."
Teal'c offered a nod of approval.
"Congratulations, O'Neill, Samantha. I believe this is a wise decision."
The dinner continued with joy, laughter, and shared memories. As they savored Jack's delicious meal, the atmosphere relaxed, and the group embraced the upcoming changes in their lives. The conversation shifted from military life to lighter topics, ensuring an enjoyable evening for everyone.
One month later…
The cabin in Minnesota stood amidst the serene landscape, surrounded by towering pines and the gentle sounds of nature. It was the perfect setting for Sam and Jack's intimate wedding ceremony, attended by their closest friends and colleagues.
Cassie, Daniel, Teal'c, SG-16, and General Hammond gathered in a semi-circle to witness the union as the ceremony began. Sam, radiant in an elegant yet simple dress that complemented the natural beauty of the surroundings, stood beside Jack under the makeshift arch adorned with wildflowers.
Cassie, who had become like a daughter to Sam since Janet's death, held a small bouquet of white lilies. Daniel stood beside her, and Teal'c stood stoically, a symbol of support and strength. SG-16 formed a backdrop of camaraderie and shared history while General Hammond officiated the ceremony.
Dressed in his dress blues, Jack gazed at Sam with joy and adoration. The sun began its descent, casting a warm glow over the gathering.
"Friends, family, we're gathered here today to celebrate the union of Doctor Samantha Carter and Brigadier General Jack O'Neill," General Hammond began, his voice carrying the weight of the moment. "Their journey has been marked by courage, dedication, and a shared commitment to a cause larger than themselves."
Sam and Jack exchanged heartfelt vows as he spoke, articulating their promises and love for each other.
Sam's voice was steady and sincere, "Jack, from the moment we stepped through the Stargate together, I knew our destinies were intertwined. Today, I choose you to be my partner in this adventure, my confidant, and my love. I promise to stand by you through whatever challenges our journey may hold."
With a twinkle in his eye, Jack responded, "Sam, you are my constant, my anchor. I promise to cherish you, support you, and continue making you laugh even when the world gets too serious. Today, I pledge my love to you, and I look forward to a future filled with more laughter, love, and maybe a few fishing trips."
The exchange of vows was met with smiles, a few tears, and the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting hues of orange and pink across the sky, General Hammond pronounced them husband and wife.
"You may now kiss the bride," he announced with a smile.
Underneath the fading light, Jack leaned in, and Sam and Jack sealed their vows with a passionate kiss, surrounded by the love and support of their cherished friends. The celebration continued into the evening, with laughter, toasts, and the promise of a shared life.
Little did anyone know, the world would soon welcome a new member of the Carter-O'Neill family. Unbeknownst to the gathered friends, the SGC had already started placing bets on the newlyweds, unaware that a baby was already on the way, ready to expand the family and bring even more joy to their lives.
Sergeant Sylvester Siler had won the bet about the date of their marriage with an amount of money he refused to share with anyone but had left his wife speechless for almost two days. She then told him to bet heavily on the date of the first Carter-O'Neill baby and not to take long because she suspected it might occur in a couple of months.
He invested half his winnings into planning a date that would leave his wife even more speechless. Approximately eight months later, their joy doubled when Jacob 'Jake' Carter-O'Neill was born, and they celebrated another win.
