Giles met the three teens and a cat named Willow at the edge of the woods. He handed the tranq gun to Xander who began taking it apart.
"What are you doing, Xander?" Buffy asked. "We need that!"
"Which is why he's checking to make sure everything works on it." Cordelia told her. "You should always make sure a weapon is functional before you try using."
"Oh, that makes sense."
"Alright." Xander said, after reassembling the gun. "We're too big a group together. I suggest Giles and Buffy explore in one direction and Cordy and I in the other. Willow sticks to the trees."
'Already up here, Xander.' Willow projected to him.
"A good idea." Giles agreed. "One strong person and one - ."
"Stop while you're ahead, Giles." Cordelia told him. "Because I'm stronger than you."
"So's Willow in her other form." Xander pointed out. "Sorry, Giles. Your strength is in your brains and the good thing is, they're Olympic level."
"Yes, quite. We'll go this way." Giles decided and he and Buffy headed off, while Xander and Cordelia headed in the opposite direction. Willow followed Buffy and Giles, keeping to the trees above them. Everything was going well until Buffy stepped into a trap and found herself hoisted into the air.
'Xander!' Willow called through the telepathic link. 'Buffy's caught in some kind of trap!'
'Calm down, Willow.' Xander sent back. 'Describe the trap.'
'It's a net.'
'Someone else may be hunting the whatever it is and want to catch it. We're on our way. Continue to keep watch.'
"Gotcha!" A man's voice says, as he walks up to Buffy and takes a look at her. "What the Hell?!"
"Giles!" Buffy yelled.
Giles, who had become a bit separated from Buffy raced back to her when he heard her call his name. "Hey!" He yelled when he saw the man, then raised his hands as the man aimed his own gun at him. The one Giles was holding was still held in his hand, but his finger wasn't near the trigger.
"Hands are good right about there." The man said. "Keep your finger away from that trigger." He warned.
"Who are you?!" Giles demanded to know. "What are you doing?"
"The name's Cain. I'm the one with the gun pointing at you, which means I'm the one who gets to do the interviewing."
"You sure about that?" Xander asked, as he appeared and wrenched the old flintlock out of Cain's hands and pointed it at him. "Cordy, cut Buffy down."
"On it." Cordelia moved around behind the net and out of Cain's sight, used her claws to cut through the netting. "I should make him pay for my next manicure." She muttered.
Buffy landed hard on the ground and Cordelia helped her up.
"Hey, I'm impressed." Cain said.
"By what?" Xander asked.
"The old guy getting the fruit so young. What else would he be doing out in Lover's Lane with a kid that young."
Xander lowered the gun he'd taken from Cain and than popped Cain's chin with it. "That man is like a father to us all. You will speak to him with respect. Now, tell us what you're doing out here with a gun and a net."
"I'm hunting a werewolf. I tracked it here. It mauled someone in these woods last night. So I set a trap for it."
"It was hunting in these woods." Xander said. "It's full of rabbits and such, why would it go after a human?" Xander figured this guy was from outside Sunnydale and well aware of things like mutants and vampires so questioning him about a werewolf shouldn't be an issue. 'And wait, werewolves are real?' He thought. 'And that's what mauled that guy? Wow, I really am learning something new every week.'
"Well, they're attracted to all that sexual heat the kids in the cars in Lover's Lane are giving off. Thing is, I think there's more than one. I followed one into town, but I found tracks of different sizes. So there may be one here in town already. I got one last night and was trying to catch the other one when I ran into you guys. So what are you doing?"
"The same thing." Xander answered. "Only we're not looking to kill them. Why are you?"
"Because they're pelts fetch a pretty penny Shri Lanka."
"You're killing them for money?! Werewolves are people, aren't they? Not demons?"
"Well it depends on what you believe. Some believe they're connected to a wolf-demon or a wolf-god. Some are under a curse, others are mutants and some are botched science experiments. But yeah, for the most part they're humans that turn into wolves."
"And you hunt them while they're wolves."
"Well, that's the only way you can get the pelt."
"As long as they're not a danger to humans, than they're not the enemy. If they take precautions and don't actively seek to hurt people, than hunting them is unnecessary."
"Well, there's the whole money thing. I consider that a necessity."
Xander began to take apart the flintlock, as he removed pieces he handed them to each of the girls and Giles. "You're a human, unless you're an active threat, than we will leave you alone. But understand this, Sunnydale is our territory, we are the hunters here. Unless you want to be the hunted, I suggest you leave town and not come back."
"My gun." Cain said.
Buffy snapped the piece she was holding which made Cain's eyes widen. "Humans and that includes werewolves, as long as they're not hurting humans, are safe here. Do as my friend suggested and leave."
After Cain left Xander said softly. "It's not over yet, we still need to find and confirm it's a werewolf and that guy may not just give up."
