ONE MORE FINAL (I'VE COME BACK TO YOU)
Asuka Langley Soryu stared out at the scene in front of her. The 600-metre diameter, pitch black circle had swallowed up a large section of Tokyo-3's skyline, not to mention a boy she had come to like and admire more than she would ever allow herself to admit. Especially not in front of Misato, or that boy himself, or anybody else for that matter. Now, he was gone, and the black space in front of her echoed the dark blankness that had enveloped her thoughts, her bravado wavering.
Pfft, he wasn't worth it, was he? The idiot doesn't even know how to kiss or hold a girl. Pathetic.
Next to her stood Unit Zero with Wondergirl inside, who had been as circumspect as usual during this most unique of crises. Overhead, the peal of jet engines propelling heavy bombers laden with N2 mines towards their target – the very interdimensional hole she was standing next to – pierced the stillness.
Despite her outward boisterousness in the last 20 hours, Asuka had felt the dread of hope running out creeping up on her. The worst thing was that there was nothing, nothing, she could do to help him. Even worse, the adults who were supposed to have all the knowledge and ideas were just as stuck without any real plan too. And now, because of humanity's collective powerlessness, she'd lost someone else important in her life, just like…
Mama.
No, this wasn't the time for it. It was never the time for it, and there would never be the time for it. She was Asuka Langley Soryu, elite of the elite. She didn't need anyone or anything, especially not now, when she was inside her most prized place, the entry plug of Evangelion Unit Two. Not even a kind-of-cute boy who cooked for her, cleaned for her, obeyed her every whim, and was actually crazy enough to save her life.
She tried to still her mind and return to her serene overwatch of the situation as the clock counted down to tee equals zero, when the question of whether Shinji's life had been extinguished would be put out of doubt. And immediately after that was when Asuka could start mourning, solely in private, for the one whom she cared about, but could never make him understand.
She shook that thought away. It didn't matter now. She would return to her usual state of superiority to stand apart from the rest. A little voice in her head just called it loneliness, which was an accusation the rest of her denied vehemently.
The angel's shadow suddenly started to vibrate and the ground beneath her feet started to shake, and scarlet cracks started running from the centre of the circle. Amidst the visual chaos, every single alarm in her entry plug started crying out for attention in unison. The audio feed from NERV's CIC wasn't any better, which overloaded Asuka's ability to do anything useful.
"What's going on?!" she asked nobody in particular. She only received a stream of technobabble in response, which was totally useless. Asuka suppressed any sense of panic and then sought the best course of action. Until something else started happening.
Despite her considerable intellect, Asuka could not quite comprehend what Dr Akagi had said about this particular angel. The weird black thing that looked like a was the body, and the zebra striped blob floating in the sky was actually its shadow projected from some pocket universe that was previously only theoretically described in mathematics. What did that blonde woman call it again? The Duracell Sea? If only Shinji had brought some Duracells with him…
She noticed that the zebra stripes had disappeared now and the floating ball was now totally black. It started vibrating as well. Then it started to swell, and then it burst like a zit that Asuka totally, never, ever had. It sprayed the entire area with red angel blood, and not for the first time, Asuka was glad that whoever designed Unit Two had the foresight to leave the olfactory sensors unwired.
As the angel blood flowed off her Evangelion's eyes, she saw a welcome sight. Evangelion Unit One stood in front of her, as if it was a mirage. It looked menacing, the two white slits for eyes were staring at her, boring into her soul, as scarlet rain pelted down on the city. Unit One was also carrying a huge new weapon on its back, a silver and purple pike that it had clearly not been issued before the last battle. Asuka had to be imagining things. There was no way that it could be there in front of her. If it were true, and still standing, then that meant…
Shinji is still in there! He's alive!
Asuka wasn't sure if she was hallucinating now. She watched as Unit One walked deliberately towards her, its face armour, pitted with damage from whatever battles it had been fighting filling up the vision on the screen. And she then all she could feel was the huge bear hug that it gave Unit Two.
"Asuka, I'm so glad to be back," said the idiot to her, and only her.
Better late than never, you stupid jerk.
Final author's notes:
Hello there and thank you all for sticking with me on this, my first fanfiction writing adventure. It's been a very fun story to write.
The inspiration for this tale came one day when I was watching Konosuba, and thinking what might have happened if Shinji wasn't stuck in that hellscape of Tokyo-3 with the worst adults in the world. Would he have been able to avert some of the bad stuff that happened towards the latter part of the series, especially that one scene in End of Evangelion? Actually, there are quite a few scenes in End of Evangelion where I was rooting for the poor guy to snap out of his fatalistic nihilism. So, I decided to purposefully stick him in a quirky generic fantasy isekai world.
Now, I'm not going to say that the characterisation of Shinji is very true to form. Though I tried my best to write an accurate Shinji, I'm sure it was too easy to get him out of his funk. But I wanted to explore what genuinely good, kind and supportive people who have his back could do for him.
Finally, if you're wondering, our mopey boy's journey continues. The ramifications of a somewhat more healed Shinji, with better mental fortitude, not to mention a newly conscious Yui Ikari inside Unit One, and a legendary magical weapon, will be explored in the sequel. Look out for it on !
