Chapter 19
Kara watched as Matt was taken into custody. She half expected that Mary would put up a fight but when she did not, the blonde wondered if there was an ulterior motive. Of course, she couldn't wonder for very long as Agent Schwartz opened the back door of the vehicle and pushed Matt inside. Just as the agent predicted, the man's eyes went wide.
"Hello Matt," Kara said.
"I swear… I did not… put Marie in that bomb vest," Matt stammered.
"Funny because she says you did. If that wasn't bad enough, she says you were trying to sabotage Obsidian North's project. So, what would you gain from messing with your own project and trying to kill your supposed friend?" Kara wanted to know. Gonzalez fired up the vehicle and they headed back toward the highway. They were heading for ARGUS, not NCPD.
"Who was that lady you were with?" Agent Schwartz pressed. With questions coming from two fronts, there were visible cracks in Matt's façade.
"You gotta offer me protection," the computer software engineer told them.
"Protect you from who?" Kara raised an eyebrow. Matt knew that he'd already said too much but it seemed like he didn't care.
"I'll tell you everything but I want it all in writing," he said. From the front seat they heard,
"We picked up a tail." It was Alex. Kara turned her head and looked out the back window. There was a white SUV trying to play coy behind the small car that was directly behind them.
"It doesn't match any of the cars we saw at the motel parking lot," Schwartz pointed out.
"So, they were lurking nearby? What's the chances of that?" Alex wondered.
"I'm guessing pretty good. I can see guns inside the SUV along with two rather large men," Kara let them know. It was times like these she really liked having X-ray vision.
"Seems your buddies back there don't trust you either or maybe the whole reason you were brought to the motel was because they didn't need you anymore," Schwartz gave him a look.
"You have to protect me! My wife!" Matt was suddenly even more worried than he was before. Alex quickly grabbed her phone and called ARGUS. They needed someone to pick up Matt's wife. The last thing they needed was to have a kidnapping take place.
"Who are we dealing with?" Kara demanded.
"She calls herself Enigma. She promised that no one would get hurt. If I sabotaged the Obsidian North project, we would be saving lives. Marie knew. We had concerns regarding the planet protector system. The security of it, the fact that if something went wrong… our questions weren't being answered because we did not have enough security clearance," Matt said.
"Something changed your mind about the people that you were working with," Kara raised an eyebrow as Gonzales picked up the pace of their vehicle. They were only about a mile from ARGUS and the vehicle that was following them hadn't made any bold moves yet. Perhaps this cautious approach was because they wanted to see who they were dealing with first.
"Enigma said that if I sabotaged the Obsidian North's project, that I'd get paid, but only if I got something for her," he started.
"They're making a move!" Alex warned everyone in the vehicle. Kara lowered her window and zipped out of the opening, letting Agent Gonzales floor it. As they zipped away, Kara landed on the hood of the vehicle which had been tailing them. The engine piled into the road surface below and it came to an incredibly sudden stop.
"Hello boys! Did you need something?" Kara had a smirk on her face. The move had set the airbags off so she did not get the answer she was hoping for. Sirens could be heard as ARGUS agents left their headquarters and headed toward Supergirl's location. The blonde went to the driver's side of the SUV and ripped the door off the hinges. Pulling the driver out of the hunk of metal, she held him close. The airbag had made a mess of his face but he was still conscious.
"You didn't answer my question. That isn't very nice," the blonde said as the ARGUS agents arrived.
"I hope you'll answer theirs," she told him.
