It's done! It's finally done! The last full chapter is done. Epilogue will come soon! I have it done, but I just need to do a few more things. I will do one more review review before we end the story. Enjoy the last full chapter!
P.s. I will be deleting the Author's note prior to the upload of the Epilogue.
Hiccup groaned as he paced back and forth. To quote the British, everything had literally gone pear-shaped. The plan to capture Grimmel had failed. Gobber sighed.
"Thor Almighty. Guess we won't be needing this then, huh?
Gobber gestured to a hand made cage before continuing on with getting rid of it. Hiccup groaned as he pinched his nose.
"I led us right into his trap"
"Yeah, nice work, Chief. Right, Ruff?"
When silence followed everyone looked at Tuffnut.
"Wait…"
"Uh…" Tuffnut's eyes widened with realization.
"Where is Ruffnut?" asked Hiccup.
Fishlegs began to panic.
"We-we left her behind!"
Astrid scoffed, throwing her hands up.
"How could you not notice she was missing? You ride a two-headed dragon."
Tuffnut nodded.
"Oh, yeah. I feel like how Ruffnut is everyday... Dumb."
Gobber facepalmed.
"Odin be spanked! This just gets better and better."
Hiccup sighed as he tried to calm everyone down.
"O-Okay guys! Just keep your helmets on! Toothless and I will fly–"
But a viking interrupted him, bringing him down to reality.
"Toothless has the female Night Fury now! He's probably not even coming back!"
"What?"
Elsa came over to him, touching his shoulder.
"You gave him his freedom, Hiccup. What were you expecting?"
"I never thought he'd stay away for good!" Hiccup replied. He was frustrated with everything. Grimmel, the dragons, hell his own people! " I-I... Ah... Look, I'll figure it out. I just need more time."
As Hiccup stormed off, Valka, and Stoick made their way to Elsa.
"He thinks he has to lead alone. Well, because his father had to."
Dropping his helmet on the ground, Hiccup continued to walk on. Stoick rested his giant hand on Elsa's shoulder.
"He doesn't realize the strength you have together. Do you still believe in him?"
"Of course," Elsa replied. She was worried for her husband. With all this stress, it was amazing that he hadn't turned gray from it.
"I wish he did, but he thinks he's nothing without Toothless."
Valka smiled softly.
"Then help him realize the truth."
Elsa nodded and quickly ran to her tent, tossing open her trunk, pulling out her dragon scale armor. She had no idea if she was going to fit into it, but she had to try. She quickly tossed her clothes off and wrapped herself in fresh undergarments, biting her lip as she wrapped her chest bindings around herself. Anna came in.
"Elsa, where are you going?"
"To find Toothless."
Slipping her armor on, it was snug, and a bit too tight in a few places, mainly her hips and chest, but overall still fit. Anna tried to stop her.
"What about Zephyr?"
"I'm not just gonna sit around and raise Hiccup and I's child while the boys go out and fight. Hiccup needs me, Anna. And I need him."
Grabbing her helmet, she hurried out to a waiting Skaði. Her mother and father quickly came over. Her father grabbed her hand.
"Elsa! Where are you going?"
"To find Toothless, father. I need to help my husband."
Iduna rested her hand on her shoulder.
"But Zephyr…"
"There are plenty of vikings here that can watch her. Plenty of them still have babies. She'll be fine. Besides…I miss flying with Skaði. And she can track Toothless..despite being a Strike class dragon. We'll come back and we'll make this right."
Climbing on board, Skaði took flight, flying over to where Hiccup was walking, and she landed in front of him, roaring loudly.
Hiccup was surprised.
"Elsa…what?"
"Get on!"
"Wait, what?
"We're going to find him."
Elsa held her hand out. Hiccup shook his head.
"Elsa, we..you can't because.."
"Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, if you don't shut up and get on this saddle, I will put you on myself and freeze your ass to it. I am not sitting around on my ass while you go out and fight. Now get on."
Hiccup nodded and grabbed her hand, climbing on.
"You're stubborn, you know that?"
"I get it from you, dear."
Elsa guided Skaði into the air before calling down to the vikings and her people.
"Everybody, stay put! We will get Ruffnut back! Don't worry!"
Tuffnut snorted.
"Pffft. Worry? If they're stuck with Ruffnut, I'm more worried about them."
Meanwhile on Berk, Æsa had frozen more. She sat in front of a dwindling fire. Her anger had lessened. Her husband abandoned her all for the sake of his conquest. But despite her husband's control over the Deathgrippers, one of them had been incredibly kind to her. It never seemed like it was a forced kindness. A memory that she had one since buried, due to her husband ordering the others to kill her. She had helped her grief through the loss of her child that she had shared with Grimmel during their younger years. A baby that never got to breathe the air that she did.
Could it be? That dragons were not what they were portrayed as?
She could no longer feel the cold and she slowly froze over completely, her eyes closing.
Meanwhile, flying over open ocean, Hiccup and Elsa watched as Skaði sniffed the air. Hiccup was puzzled.
"Where..where is she heading?
Elsa touched her dragon's neck.
"She's tracking something, aren't you, girl?"
As she flew lower to the ocean, Hiccup sighed.
"There's nothing but miles and miles of…"
A loud thunderous roar was heard as sea spray shot up at them. Hiccup gasped.
"A great waterfall.."
"At the end of the world," finished Elsa.
The two looked at each other, astonished. Then Skaði began to dive."
"Skaði!"
The water sprayed them as they dove into the hole. Opening their eyes, Hiccup and Elsa were greeted with a cave. Sensing the entrance to the Hidden World, Skaði led them into a mushroom forest. They flew over bright blue water and then entered a section of the world where tall pillars of rock glowed with bioluminescence. Skaði started to glow, some of her white scales turning icy. Hiccup laughed as Elsa smiled.
"Wow!"
As they continued flying, they flew over dragon eggs, and flew through thousands of fireworms. Elsa gasped as they reached a center point and spotted a dragon. Landing Skaði, the two headed forward on foot. Hiccup sighed with surprise.
"It really does exist."
Dragons flew above them as they glanced around. Hiccup spotted Toothless overhead.
"Toothless."
Elsa shushed him.
"You'll spook them."
They watched as Toothless and his mate flew down from where they were, and landed on the giant orange crystal at the center of the cavern. It was like a throne. All the dragons that were surrounding them, standing on the ground, roared for Toothless. Toothless returned the roar quite proudly.
"Now that's a king." Elsa said with a smile.
As they watched the two Furies flirt with one another, Hiccup began to look upset as he realized the truth for the future. This wouldn't last forever. Elsa placed her hand on his shoulder and he nodded.
"We should go."
As they turned to leave, they saw a massive Rumblehorn behind them. The two glanced at one another and spoke at the same time.
"Oh, no."
They slowly backed away, and Hiccup gently put out his hand to tame the dragon but the Rumblehorn simply roared, causing all of the dragons to be aware of danger, especially Toothless. Elsa called out.
"Skaði!"
Hiccup and Elsa jumped from the cliff and slid down, dodging all of the dragon with difficulty.
"Go! Go!"
They continued to run away from the Rumblehorn which was still chasing them. Toothless pushed several dragons out of the way, trying to save Hiccup and Elsa, just managing to grab them. He took flight with them in his forelegs, Hiccup calling up to him.
"I-I'm sorry bud. I-I-I just–"
Toothless growled at the dragons following them, keeping them from attacking. He flew over Skaði and dropped Elsa onto her back as Hiccup climbed onto his friend's back. He looked sad as he remembered a memory from his childhood.
Hiccup noticed his father, crying in front of the fireplace. Knowing that vikings couldn't show weakness, he started to head back up the stairs quietly when the stair creaked and Stoick turned to see his son.
"Son!" Stoick wiped his eyes. "You should be asleep."
Hiccup glanced down.
"I was thirsty."
Stoick nodded.
"Yeah, come here."
Climbing down the stairs and running to his dad, Stoick lifted Hiccup onto his lap and allowed him to use tongs for the fire. Hiccup glanced up at his father.
"Dad? Are you gonna get us a new mom?"
Stoick couldn't believe the words coming out of his son's mouth. He sighed. Hiccup needed to hear this. He hugged and kissed his head.
"I don't want another. Your mom was the only woman for me. She was the love of my life. But with love comes loss, son. It's part of the deal. Sometimes it hurts, but in the end, it's all worth it. There's no greater gift than love."
Several hours later, Hiccup, Toothless, Elsa, and Skaði made their way back to New Berk. They had found the Hidden World but Hiccup had found that Toothless belonged there. He was a king. The dragons didn't deserve this. None of them did. Especially Toothless. He felt even worse considering Toothless rescued him from the wild dragons in the Hidden World. He would always choose his best friend over his kind. Something he intended to change. He belonged there. With his mate. As they landed, Hiccup went in front of his friend, rubbing his snout.
"It's okay, bud. You belong there, with her. We don't."
Toothless agreed but it was a half-hearted snort. He enjoyed being with Hiccup.
"And that's alright," Hiccup continued smiling sadly. "We'll find a way to man.."
Unexpectedly, Toothless turned around quickly. He sensed something and found out the female Fury had followed them. Toothless barked happily. Hiccup smiled as Toothless licked his face.
"Hey! She followed us back!"
Toothless ran to the female Fury and she jumped playfully on him. Hiccup felt relieved.
"We might not have to say goodbye after all."
But before anything else could happen, Ruffnut suddenly appeared on a baby Scuttleclaw, cheering. Elsa was shocked.
"Ruffnut?
Said blonde hopped off the Scuttleclaw and threw her helmet off.
"Miss me?"
"How did you escape?"
"I annoyed them till they let me go."
"Wai-wait…" Hiccup felt his blood run cold. Everything was screaming trap at him. "Grimmel LET you go?"
"So dumb. They couldn't handle me. See, everyone thinks Tuffnut's more annoying but–"
"But hold on," Elsa said, looking at Hiccup nervously. She glanced behind her to find Toothless missing. Hiccup spoke up.
"Ruffnut! Focus. Were you followed?"
Ruffnut snorted.
"I never look back, Hiccup."
Hiccup gasped.
"Toothless!"
Hiccup ran as fast as he could. It was a trap. And Toothless was walking right into it. The female Fury perked up sensing the danger and tried to fly away, asking Toothless to follow her. But it was too late. A dart came sailing through the air, striking the poor girl in the neck, causing her to fall. Toothless quickly went to rescue her but was shot as well.
Hiccup cried out.
"No!"
"Now our little game must come to an end," Grimmel said with a grin as he climbed onto his airship. Berk and Arendelle's dragons came running to protect their alpha only for Toothless to roar at them as Grimmel aimed a harpoon at the female fury.
"What are they doing?" asked Snotlout. "They could totally take him!"
Elsa shook her head.
"Not with her life on the line."
Toothless roared at Grimmel's Deathgrippers to try to make them fly away too. The only response he received was a roar to the face. Grimmel laughed.
"Save your breath! The only Alpha they respond to is me!"
With a pained groan, Toothless gave up as Grimmel turned to the riders.
"Awww, don't feel too bad. You tried your best! But, you are nothing without your dragon."
Whistling loudly, Grimmel made his Deathgrippers fly away. Toothless roared at the dragons of Berk and Arendelle, calling to them. Every single dragon took flight and every rider watched helplessly as their dragons flew away. Except for one.
Skaði nuzzled her rider. Despite Toothless being an alpha, Skaði's unique heritage made her more resistant to his calls.
Ruffnut snorted.
"Oh, so we lose all of our dragons, but Miss High and Mighty gets to keep he…mph!"
A blast of ice covered her mouth to get her to shut up. Elsa was furious with Ruffnut. It was her fault that she was followed. Had she just followed her training, she wouldn't have brought Grimmel here. A soft hand rested upon her shoulder as Snotlout, and Fishlegs tried to remove the ice from Ruffnut's mouth.
"He'll listen to you," said Valka quietly.
With a nod, Elsa made her way to her husband. As Hiccup paced, he glanced to see his wife and shook his head.
"Don't say it."
Elsa raised her hands in surrender.
"I wasn't going to."
"I shouldn't have dragged you out there. He wouldn't have flown me back. She wouldn't have followed."
Elsa nodded.
"Yep."
"Aah! I feel like the same screw up I was before I met Toothless."
Elsa shrugged her shoulders, nodding.
"I can see that."
Hiccup scoffed and stopped pacing, looking at his wife.
"Are you just gonna stand there and agree with everything?"
Elsa shrugged.
"Well, you're right. You're back to where you started. But I was one of the first to believe in you. And I have watched you doubt whether you're worthy ever since. But you know what? I am the person I am today because of you. I never told you that, but it's true. I never thought I'd get married, have a child, become a Spirit of Nature, let alone a dragon rider."
Resting her hand on his pauldron, she looked into his eyes.
"You are the bravest, most stubborn, most determined...knucklehead I know. Toothless didn't give you that, Hiccup. He just made it.."
"Easier," finished Hiccup. He glanced over at his wife before looking down again.
"And now it's gonna be a lot harder. So... what are you gonna do about it?"
Hiccup briefly snickered. He shrugged as he looked at his wife.
"Probably something stupid."
Elsa smiled.
"That's the Hiccup I know."
Hiccup kissed Elsa passionately before turning to the group.
"Suit up, gang! We're gonna get them back."
Fishlegs stared at Hiccup, stopping his motions to free Ruffnut's mouth. Elsa waved her hand as he spoke.
"What?"
Ruffnut, having her mouth unfrozen, rolled her eyes.
"He's lost his mind."
A glare from Elsa shut her up. Fishlegs spoke again.
"Umm. How are we gonna get our dragons back... without dragons?"
Hiccup glanced at the trapper ships below before turning to his friends.
"Trust me."
After explaining the plan, Elsa mounted Skaði, readying herself for the battle. Ruffnut glanced herself over, examining her flight suit.
"So... jump off the cliff... in these. That's the best you've got?"
Hiccup laughed.
"No. You guys are the best I've got."
"Aww," Ruffnut said. "I'm with him, who else?"
Tuffnut groaned.
"Ruffnut... that was my line."
"Let's go!"
Hiccup, Astrid, Elsa, and Skaði charged towards the cliff, with Astrid calling back.
"Try to keep up!"
Leaping into the air, Hiccup and Astrid activated their flight suits while Skaði and Elsa took flight, aiming for the biggest ship.
"Come on, girl. Let's kick some ass."
Skaði agreed with a roar as she opened her maw, shooting spikes of ice into the ship, puncturing it's hull as they flew over. Elsa leapt from her dragon's saddle as she joined Hiccup and the gang landing next to them. Hiccup smiled.
"Perfect timing!"
"Always, love," Elsa replied as she summoned her ice shield and sword. She nodded at her husband before he spoke up.
"Game faces!"
Glancing around them, Elsa noticed they were missing one member. She glanced up to see Snotlout, hanging by the teeth of a wooden dragon.
"Yeah, what are you waiting for? Get in there!"
With a sigh, Hiccup and the gang charged into battle. A loud blast was heard as Toothless began to free himself from Grimmel's airship, blasting several Deathgrippers away from the airship, breaking the mountings and causing it to lose lift. Elsa blocked several blows but was clearly struggling due to lack of training. If she survived this, she would have to retrain herself. Taking a deep breath, she didn't see the soldier charging towards her, but suddenly a blast of acid melted the man where he stood. Elsa quickly turned around to see the man be eaten away but felt a blast of air behind her. Slowly turning around a Deathgripper stood before her, staring at her.
A thud was heard as a rider slid off. Æsa limped over, still partially frozen but alive. The ice from her body quickly receded.
"The Gods themselves have spared me and given me my friend back. Gave me a chance to start over. You and your husband were right. Dragons are not what they appear to be. Kill my husband. End his terror."
Æsa climbed onto her dragon and fled, leaving Elsa conflicted. She had insulted her unborn child, yes, but she had just saved her life. That gave her the benefit of the doubt. Shaking her head she returned to the battle.
Below, Astrid battled a soldier on a gangway. He parried her blow and cornered her, raising his sword for the kill. Hiccup called up.
"Heads up!"
Hiccup cut a nearby rigging line, releasing a sailing boom that swept through and sent the soldier flying off of the gangway.
"Thanks."
Astrid returned to the battle as Elsa came to Hiccup's side.
"Hiccup, look out!"
Elsa formed an ice hammer and threw it, the thick blue block, slamming into his face. The two walked over to one another as a battle raged below them.
"Thanks."
Elsa grabbed a canister of Hideous Zippleback gas from Hiccup's belt, biting off the wax seal and tossing it to the deck below. With a smile, Hiccup threw inferno into the gas cloud causing the soldiers to panic and flee as the fireball erupted, causing a beautiful explosion that framed the husband and wife team. Whistling loudly, Elsa called Skaði, pointing towards the airship and then to her husband. Skaði grabbed Hiccup from the deck and carried him towards Grimmel. She watched carefully, sending a prayer to the Gods to protect her husband.
Skaði carried her rider's mate as fast as she could. A Deathgripper slammed into them, knocking Hiccup from her grasp as he crashed onto the Airship, grabbing at the wooden structure to hold on.
"I'm coming, Toothless!"
With a growl, Grimmel shimmied down the chain to the female Fury.
"You still think he cares about you?!"
Pushing a vial of Deathgripper venom into the Fury's collar, she was subdued into obedience as Grimmel climbed on.
"Let's just see who he follows!"
Releasing the latch, the Fury took flight, groggy and obedient, carrying Grimmel on her back. Toothless watched, raging and struggling to free himself. Hiccup jumped through the air, grabbing Toothless' chain and climbed down to his friend, working on freeing him.
"I'm sorry, bud! For everything!"
The airship crashed into the water, and at the last possible second, both dragon and dragon rider burst through the surface, flying after Grimmel.
"Now let's go get her!"
Grimmel led the chase through the tall, craggy rocks of New Berk. Toothless and Hiccup zigzaged behind, closing in. Suddenly, the four remaining Deathgrippers appeared from behind a rocky spire, bombarding Hiccup and Toothless.
"Uh, we've got problems."
Each Deathgripper made a move to attack them, but with agile motions, Toothless and Hiccup were able to take two of them out temporarily. Down below, Agnarr and Iduna watched as they held their granddaughter in their arms. They shouted at him. They were the first to believe in him, and he needed their support.
"Take him down, Hiccup!"
The crowd cheered for them.
Above, one of the Deathgrippers clamped onto Toothless and tried to stab him with his stinger.
"We need a better plan!"
More Deathgrippers began to swarm, trapping Toothless, making him unable to move.
"And quick!"
Toothless growled as he split his dorsal fins, static electricity building up rapidly.
"Uh, what... what are you doing?"
Seeing Toothless' scales turn almost mirror-like, Hiccup held on.
"Okay... okay."
With a loud roar, a bolt of lighting came down, striking the two and instantly killing the Deathgrippers. The crowd was shocked. Toothless and Hiccup were gone! Grimmel looked back, baffled to see his lifeless Deathgrippers dropping from the sky. He looked around frantically. Hiccup and Toothless rematerialized in front of him, with Toothless letting out a loud roar as they charged. Hiccup leapt out of his seat, throwing open the wings of his armor.
"AGGH!"
Grimmel growled and fired a dart from his crossbow. Hiccup twisted in the air, avoiding it subconsciously, not realizing the consequences. Toothless yelped in pain and went unconscious. Hiccup crashed into Grimmel, his helmet flying off as he and Grimmel slid off the female Fury's back. Hiccup held onto the collar with one hand, wrapping his other arm over her neck. Grimmel held onto his leg, trying to pull himself up.
"AAGGH! You'll kill both of us! Fighting over a dragon? That's your plan?!"
Hiccup watched in terror as Toothless fell from the sky. There was no other way. He couldn't save his friend, the female Fury, himself and defeat Grimmel at the same time. There was only one option.
Grabbing the collar, he started undoing the snaps that held it in place.
"This is."
Removing the collar, the female Fury woke up, her dark-blue eyes staring at Hiccup. Hiccup nodded.
"Save him."
Hiccup let go.
Elsa screamed.
"Hiccup!"
Elsa watched in horror as Hiccup fell with Grimmel, spotting the female Fury tackling Toothless and bringing him to safety. Then she noticed something. Once she was sure Toothless was safe, she took flight again.
To Hiccup everything was in slow motion. Toothless was safe. That's all that mattered to him. Feeling Grimmel grabbing him and beginning to tear apart his leather wings Hiccup tried to kick him away, but Grimmel slipped and clung to his prosthetic leg. A sharp piercing screech was heard and Hiccup looked up, seeing the female Fury charging towards him. He leaned forward and tugged on his straps holding his prosthetic leg in plan. The leg came undone with a click freeing him from Grimmel who screamed.
Grimmel crashed into the sea with an explosive splash, killing him instantly. At the last second, the female Fury swooped in and grabbed Hiccup. He looked up, stunned. She looked under her belly to meet his eyes and cooed. Hiccup laughed with a sigh of relief.
"See? I knew you'd come around."
Carrying Hiccup to the cliffs and dropping him close to Toothless, she landed on the grass, smiling. The rest of the riders, the Berkians, the Arendellians, and their dragons arrived, whooping and cheering. They had done it. Hiccup stood up and hopped, one-legged, towards Toothless, falling to his knees and caressed his nose with his finger.
"Hey, good morning, bud."
Toothless started to regain consciousness. Sitting down next to him, he patted his head.
"Here you go. Boy, you are full of surprises."
The female Fury walked over to Hiccup and Toothless. Hiccup rested his hand against her snout as a burst of ice pinned him to the ground.
"Uh…help."
Elsa came over and sat on his lap, slapping him.
"Ow!"
"That's for scaring me."
"Why? Why is it always like…"
Elsa silenced him with a kiss.
"Oh."
"Oi!" Someone shouted. "Get a room, you two!"
The two blushed brightly as Elsa unfroze him, and helped him up. Resting their heads together, they smiled softly.
Toothless looked at Hiccup. Then he looked towards the horizon then back at Hiccup. Hiccup glanced across the horizon as well. He knew what he had to do…even though it hurt him deeply.
Hiccup hopped over to his best bud, cupping his face.
"You're right, bud. It's time. I was so busy fighting for a world that I wanted, I didn't think about what you needed."
But Toothless shook his head. He knew that his kind needed to be free. But he wasn't leaving Hiccup. Not until the end. He pushed Hiccup back who protested.
"Bud! You need to go!"
Toothless roared indignantly before licking his rider's face.
"Okay, okay! I surrender!"
Toothless pulled back and huffed, clearly not wanting to go. Hiccup wiped his face and sat up, smiling. Standing with Elsa's help, he shouted out.
"Everyone! Pack your bags! We're going home!"
Everyone cheered. Hiccup smiled. He knew Toothless would have to go someday.
But not today.
This was not the end of their story.
Well here we go. Last chapter, coming soon!
