Chapter 38 – Shooting Star Dragon vs The Immortal Wisel ~ The Grand Circuit
As the battle with Placido progresses, across Neo Domino City, more incidents proceed.
With Carly? She is out taking pictures of everything, including the scrapped remains of the Diablo army. That is until the tornado breaks out. Now that it has, she is being blown away into the relentless storm. That is why she is hanging off a pole screaming for Jack.
Back at the stadium, the effects of the storm hit them hard, as the glass ceiling breaks away and falls upon many folks. Barbara and Crow guide Lua and Luca to safety.
"Are you okay?" asks Barbara, breaking her tougher persona for a moment out of true concern.
"Yeah, thanks," Crow says to her, touched by her words.
Jack and Kazuma, having been watching the entire duel, are shocked to have seen the tornado befall the city. Jack covers his face as the winds get worse.
'Yusei… are you okay?'
And Aki?
The glass windows of her hospital shatter away as she and several others watch the chaos. Aki dips down and grabs the little girl with her, Haruka, protecting the child from glass-based lacerations. Her Signer mark glows in response.
'Yusei's out there dueling for his life… and I can't do anything to help him or anyone…' Tender eyes look upon the girl, acting as a scared child is wont to. 'The least I can do is protect her with my hands…'
Several cards fly into the wind out the window. Haruka breaks free of Aki to reach for them, but they all escape her grasp. Even worse, the wind kidnaps the poor child, who screams at the sudden pull.
"Haruka!" Aki reaches out for her, missing narrowly. She watches the storm carry Haruka away until she grabs hold of the emergency exit railings. "Haruka! Don't let go of that!"
She and several others watch in despair; at this rate, she'll get blown away. Aki even mentally gripes, 'Why… if only I had my psychic powers…'
This is when she recalls the horrid memories of her past. Shaking her head free of those thoughts, she realizes how wrong it is to think of them like that. 'Why did I think those words? That power is a curse to me…'
More determined, Aki goes over to the door. Despite many warning her not to, she opens the door into the blistering wind. Her eyes half closed to protect herself from debris, she uses the railing to guide her way to Haruka. The little girl cries out for her.
"I'm almost there…" Aki nears Haruka, getting right to her before reaching for the girl.
Haruka reaches out for Aki's hand, but the wind rips her hand free of the other metal bar. She screams as she gets carried away, but Aki refuses to give up. She jumps up to catch the child, grabbing her left hand. With all her strength, she pulls, her other hand on the railing. 'I won't give up on you.'
Aki pulls herself back to safety, thanks in part to the people who came out to help her. The door shuts, and Aki brings the girl in, who lovingly hugs her while crying.
'I may not have that cursed power anymore, but I no longer need it. I am strong on my own…'
These are Aki's thoughts as they go further and further away from the open windows. Little does she know, someone watches them.
Back to Action…
"Yusei! You will fall to the power of God bestowed upon us! It's my turn now!" Placido draws his card, staring at the foolish Signer below him. "This dance is finally coming to an end."
"I dance for no one! Humans have a right to control their future!"
"If that were true, we wouldn't have existed in the first place. Your only job is to dance and complete the Circuit for us!"
"Circuit?"
"Destiny is determined by God to prevent humans from going down the wrong path. There is nothing you can do with your pathetic free will."
Like Yusei will ever believe that. He retorts, "All of us by our will can create history by living our lives. That becomes a trend that leads to the evolution of the entire human race."
"And just what is at the end of that evolution? The tool that led to your destruction, son of Momentum's top researcher?" Yusei's heart wavers once more. "Synchro Monsters are the symbol of your wasted attempts for power. No matter how many times you protect and take back Stardust Dragon, so long as it's my turn, your Synchro Monster belongs to my Machine Emperor! And I'm going to show that to you once again.
"Wisel Infinity's effect; once per turn, I can absorb one Synchro Monster you control! Stardust will be mine this time!" Wisel Infinity shoots out energy beams to ensnare the dragon once again. Yusei narrows his eyes and drives faster, doing all he can to get Stardust away from the Machine Emperor.
This is his final comeback.
"I won't let Stardust be taken again!"
Energy collects around his D-Wheel once more. Yusei narrows his eyes, which slowly open with clarity. As the speed of wind elevates his soul, he feels it again. The cleansing of light, the silence in his heart, the wind behind him; his soul has become so quiet, a drop of water resounds. His eyes witness an image he once lost.
"CLEAR MIND!"
(Clear Mind plays)
Yusei thrusts his hand out to the side. "I'll tune my level 8 Stardust Dragon with my level 2 Synchro Tuner Formula Synchron!" Formula Synchron turns into rings, reenacting the requirements that he tried five turns ago.
"A Synchro Summon on my turn?!" Wisel's tendrils reach for Stardust, but all fail to reach through the speed.
Energy crystallizes upon the dragon. It evolves through the power of Momentum and speed. "Clustering dreams will crystallize to open the door to a new evolution! Become the path the Light shines upon!"
Yusei's speed reaches a new level, moving so fast that Placido can barely see him. He even accelerates to try and catch up.
"ACCEL SYNCHRO!"

Yusei pulls out the card from the tablet, and a white dragon forms on it. As soon as he does, the Yusei Go and the Synchro Monsters all blink out of existence.

"He… he disappeared?!" Placido looks around for Yusei, before turning behind him. He spots something appearing in existence, the Yusei Go and its rider. With it, a new monster behind Yusei takes to the skies.
"ARISE, SHOOTING STAR DRAGON!"

The monster flies into the skies, passing through the storm harmlessly like a skyward shooting star. Reaching the zenith of the atmosphere, the dragon flaps its wings, parting the dark clouds like a god peering from the heavens. The blue light of the sky and the eye of heaven pierce into the dark city.
As it happens, the monster reveals its appearance; it is a white and cyan-teal dragon that greatly resembles Stardust Dragon. Its wings are smoother looking, like a jet airplane, its tail is bulkier, and its mouth has become a mask guard.

"What… what is this?!" Placido looks up in shock at the Cosmic Signer Dragon.

Even the two Emperors watching can't believe what they are seeing. Luciano, holding in his fear, cockily asks, "What now? Something out of our limits has shown up…"
"The fate assigned to us by God is already falling from our hands…" Jose speaks, which worries Luciano. "Is this the power of humans taking back what is theirs?"

Across the city, Jack sees things lightening up and decides to get a move on. Over in the stadium, Crow goes as well, taking Barbara with him.

Back to the duel, Yusei gives chase to Placido. "Seems like I'm getting a handle on your speed."
"Silence! I don't care if that's the monster you received from the tablet… I refuse to acknowledge you, humans!" Placido's Speed Counters quickly drop to 2. "Speed World 2's effect; by removing 10 Speed Counters, I destroy one card on the field! Begone, Shooting Star Dragon!"

Placido releases energy bombs upon the dragon from his left hand.

"Shooting Star Dragon's effect; once per turn, I can negate a card effect that destroys any card and destroy that card." The bombs are held in place by Shooting Star's very aura before they explode into nothing.

Placido angrily ends his turn. Without Wisel Infinity's effect, he can't get rid of it. And since it's stronger than Wisel, he'll have to wait until the next turn.

As they leave the main road, Yusei enters his turn drawing his card. Here, Placido states, "Whatever you have planned won't work. Wisel Infinity possesses three layers of defense. You have a habit of attacking twice with your ace monsters, but not even that will touch Wisel!"

"Then it's a good thing I'll activate Shooting Star Dragon's effect." The dragon roars as Yusei's deck glows bright white and teal. "Once per turn, I can excavate the top five cards of my deck. For every Tuner I reveal, Shooting Star Dragon can attack that many times a turn."
This fact worries Placido a little. If he reveals three cards he can destroy Wisel Guard. But, it's unlikely he will get enough to finish him off.

Yusei places a hand on his deck, feeling the Signer marks on his body glow. 'Guys… I'm borrowing your power.'

All four of his friends who are Signers listen to his heart's call and give faith.
Yuku ze Clear Mind
"The first card!" He reveals Junk Synchron as the Feet form.
"The second card!" He reveals Nitro Synchron, which creates the Wings.
"The third card!" This time it's Debris Dragon, giving him the Claw.
"The fourth card!" His fourth card is Effect Veiler, and the Heart is made.
Taking in a deep breath, Yusei draws the final card. "The fifth card, Hyper Synchron!" His final card causes the Mark of the Dragon to fully form on his body.
"IMPOSSIBLE! ARE YOU TELLING ME YOU WERE ABLE TO DRAW FIVE TUNERS?!"
As Placido has a heart attack, Yusei enters his Battle Phase. "Shooting Star Dragon, attack Machine Emperor Wisel Infinity! Stardust Mirage!"

The cosmic dragon splits itself into five different forms, each one a different color: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue."The first one is for what you did to Kiryu!"
The red one dives into Wisel. "Skiel Carrier 5's effect will negate that attack!"
Using the carrier, Wisel flies above the attack and causes it to miss. "The second one is for causing those D-Wheels to crash!"
The orange one comes in next, but… "Wisel Guard 3's effect! This attack is also a failure because it can't be destroyed by battle once per turn!"

"The third one is for Sherry and her family!" Yusei then watches as the yellow dragon flies in, and this time, Wisel Guard 3 is destroyed.
"The fourth is for sending those men after Aki and Crow!" Shooting Star Dragon then moves in with the green one and demolishes Wisel Attack 3, the shockwave rattling Placido.

"And now, the final attack is for me! Shooting Star Dragon, attack Skiel Carrier 5!" The dragon dives into the carrier, destroying the legs and causing the machine to fall apart.
"This isn't right! How can I be losing to a mere… human?!"

The explosion of Wisel sends Placido flying off the road. He rips out of his vehicle and falls apart, leaving only his upper torso and one arm intact. His sword slides along the ground, still containing his deck.
Yusei parks a meter away before getting up, and running to Placido's side. "Are you okay?!"
Before he can get close enough, the defeated machine's body rises in the air. Along with him are his sword and D-Wheel lower half, a man's laughter echoing from above. Staring skyward, Yusei gets a look at the person performing these actions, and spots them atop the gold fixture of the Neo Daedalus Bridge; Luciano and Jose.
Seeing the child, Yusei immediately connects to where he last saw him. "You're the one who dueled Lua and Luca, aren't you?!"
Luciano chuckles. "Oh, that? I got my cards that time and wanted to have some fun so I toyed with them a little." He reveals the card his machine Skiel stole, the Synchro monster Torunka, before tossing it back to Yusei. "But that's nothing compared to Placido here stealing your program for his Diablo army."
Yusei catches the card, thinking about what he just said. "I see… so you were the ones who hired Jaeger to steal my program!"
"Wrong. That was all Placido's idea," Jose tells Yusei, "because he wanted an alternative to our plan."
"Placido came up with the idea of using Ghost to facilitate our job, and when Jaeger almost died in that explosion he went into hiding. Which makes sense; this whole thing started because Placido wanted an excuse to get rid of you. You cross him, and you'll wish you were a cat." Luciano then glares at Placido before dipping his fingers into his broken arm to pull out his deck. "Speaking of cross, how dare you steal my cards without my permission! I'm taking them back, along with your entire deck."
The boy stares at Placido's lifeless self. "Then again, it's not like you're gonna be using them anytime soon."
"Yusei!" The mentioned teen looks back to see Jack, Crow, Barbara and Dark Glasses drive over and park near him. Sherry is nearby too, but she remains in hiding.
"Are you alright?" asks Crow as he approaches him.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Somehow."
Jack looks up at the structure, spotting Placido, Jose, and Luciano. "Who are they?"
"Hey! It's him!" Barbara shouts, pointing at the lifeless form of Placido. "That's the guy with the sword who told me about Yusei!"
"He is?" Crow looks over at the guy up in the air. "So they're the ones behind this chaos and Crash Town?"
"Who are you bastards?! Yliaster?!" shouts Jack in anger staring at Jose.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" Luciano counters.
"You are correct. We are Yliaster," says Jose without skipping a beat.
"Eh? You're gonna tell them?"
"If they've made it this far, they deserve that much." With his reason displayed, Jose continues with, "As you know from Rex Goodwin, we are the first order out of the chaos, Yliaster. And among them, we are the new directors. I am chief director Jose."
"Hey! Why are you the leader?!" Jose gives him the look, shutting the boy up. "R-Right, sorry. I guess that makes sense. Then, I'm the second director. And this little scrap idiot is the junior director."
"We have existed since ancient times during the time of the Dragon Star King. We have guided humanity onto the proper path to this day."
"A cult?" Barbara mutters to herself.
"You people are insane! You have no right to rule our lives! Humans have the right to control their own destiny!" Jack barks at him.
"Really? I hadn't thought of that! Well, nice to see that all sorted out!" says Luciano, who laughs Jack's statement off. But then, as quickly as he begins, his face molds into a serious persona. "Except, you have got to be the dumbest person I've ever met."
"What's that?!"
"The future can't be changed that easily, and we're here now because we couldn't trust you fools in the first place."
Jack grits his teeth in anger. Jose simply states loud enough, "Do not deny his words, for they are true. We exist in this time along with Paradox to destroy the horrid futures man would create."
"Paradox?!" Yusei remembers that name, as do the other members of Team 5D's.
"In the past, what they believed was a dragon coming in the form of a star was truly God taking the form of man. He sent us and others to form Yliaster, and ever since we have been correcting the follies of humanity and removing what was unnecessary. That is why we went after Momentum; it at its heart is the main source of great trauma and destruction."
Returning focus, Yusei states, "That's because you sent someone to sabotage the Momentum Reactor! Which released the Dark Signers and Earthbound Gods!"
"They would have been released eventually. Paradox simply spurred on Rudger to force them to act sooner." Yusei flinches; he now has a name for the person who the person corrupted Rudger, and it's the same woman who tried to erase Duel Monsters. "When Momentum remained, Rex took over his sect of Yliaster to use the Earthbound Gods and Signers for his goals. That's when we stepped in to replace him after his death and resume controlling humanity."
Crow seems confused. "So let me get this straight; you guys are behind everything? Every politician, banker, CEO?"
"Don't be stupid. Like every human on the planet needs to know of our presence," Luciano states with a scuff.
Jose resumes his words. "Just as there is a food chain for animals, there is a social pyramid for humans. From the lower class to the middle class to the upper class, at the top of that pyramid are the highest of society. We provide them benefit, and through them, we control the rest of humanity to keep the rest in line."
As Team 5D's grows enraged at the news, a voice suddenly speaks out. "So, what happens to the people who don't fall in line?"
"Sherry?"
Jose shakes his head. "We do not bother remembering the names of everyone who disappeared in the cracks of history."
"THEN ALLOW ME TO REMIND YOU!" Riding up the side of the structure is Sherry, about to crash into Jose.
Jose simply raises his hand, grabbing the engine of the vehicle and holding it in place. "Foolish."
"What?" Sherry gasps seeing how strong Jose is. Her focus recovers when the guy tosses it away into the sea, but she manages to leap off in time. With her Duel Disk activated, she draws her sword.
"You must be the other Psychic Duelist," Jose says looking at her.
"The LeBlanc family. You sent assassins to kill my parents, ruined their good name, and hunted me down. And for what?! A stupid card that does nothing?!" Jose narrows his eye, thinking about what that means. "I'm going to make you pay for that!"
Sherry dashes at Jose and slashes at him. Luciano tosses the sword to him, the man grabbing the blade and blocking her strike. His sword even breaks into the steel of her blade and shatters it to pieces. She gets slashed in the process, cutting across her riding gear and removing the protection.
"Sherry!" Yusei shouts, seeing Sherry sprawled across the floor bleeding.
She recovers a bit, drawing a card from her deck to utilize it. But that's when the sword impales her duel disk, breaking it. Luciano draws the sword out, having received it from his boss.
"You humans are all full of arrogance and stupidity. Your repeated desires for evolution have caused history to be changed for the worse. Despite our many attempts to change the future, there is always this one unavoidable fate we have yet to delete." Jose stares down at Yusei, all while Sherry wraps herself to cover the wound. "Yusei, your father creating Momentum was the catalyst of that future. Zero Reverse wasn't enough to discourage that future, and thus we came to a new conclusion to overcome it."
The five riders listening give Jose an intense look as they await his answer. "We will erase Neo Domino City."
"Erase!?"
"You expect us to believe that?!"
"Either all, it's gonna happen…" Luciano glares at Yusei. "Yusei, your curse hasn't been lifted yet. Placido may hate you, but God still has plans for you."
"Plans?" Yusei calms his mind, hurt by memories of Zero Reverse once more.
"The answer will be found in the World Riding Duel Grand Prix. Now that we are at this stage, we will be participating in the main round." Jose pauses after his words, looking up at an interesting site. One meteor is making its way to Earth. "About time my Emperor arrived."
Everyone looks around, before spotting up above the meteor in question. Yusei, Jack, Crow, and Barbara run away to escape the impact, not knowing what insanity would transpire before them; Jose stops it in mid-air, without touching it.
While they stare, baffled by the power of the leader of the emperors, the tablet unveils itself. Energy flows from the tablet, taking the form of cards. Afterward, the stone tablet shatters into nothing. With his cards, Jose's card opens up to reveal a duel table, allowing him to place five cards.
"Behold my power, Machine Emperor Granel." From the seas rises the monster he summoned, a gold machine emperor with a red eye. It looks more man-like similar to Wisel, but it's larger, and the left arm weapon is a cannon.
"Team 5D's, if you wish to stop us, then play the game. We have no interest in anyone except true duelists, and unlike this woman, you have proven yourself that." Jose telekinetically lifts Placido. "Luciano!"
"We still need him?" He swings, opening a portal to where they need to go. They walk through, giving parting words. Granel disappears as well.
With them gone, all power returns to Neo Domino City.
Crow sighs as everything calms down. "Man. This is nuts."
Dark Glasses heads to his vehicle, but Yusei says, "Wait! … how did you know about Accel Synchro?"
The man pauses, staring at Yusei. "You knew about the Machine Emperors, about a Synchro Summon that could defeat them, and I think you knew I would get my card from that same stone tablet… what do you mean by all of this?"
"I just knew. I knew one day you would pull it off… you could before, so you could do it again."
"Before?"
"You focus on what you must do. Your path is yours to carve, so do it with your Shooting Star Dragon." Dark Glasses then starts his D-Wheel.
"But why did you mention I could do it, and that two others could? That's what that thing said…"
He doesn't answer. He simply drives away. 'I don't know either, Yusei. There are gaps in my memory still. But don't falter; our battle against them has just begun.'
Back with Yusei and the others, Crow goes to his D-Wheel. He boards, cringing when his arm feels it again. "There you go again." Barbara joins him, climbing behind him and holding his arm. This lessens the pain.
"We better check up on the others," says Jack as he heads to his Wheel of Fortune.
"I'll go get Sherry." Yusei boards his D-Wheel and rides, performing the same ascending ride technique she pulled off.
After landing above, he dismounts to help her onboard. She mutters, "Sorry. Your favorite jacket is going to get bloodied."
"It's okay."
"I was so stupid. I should have just used my powers!" she gripes.
Yusei takes Sherry to the hospital. As they near it, they see that the building has a large hole blown out of it. That is when Yusei realizes something and grows with great fear; this is the hospital Aki is staying in.
"Aki!" He still carries Sherry inside, but once they're in and she's seated, he goes running through the halls. Her name echoes through the halls from his mouth as doctors and nurses try to stop him. He isn't the first to show up worried about a patient.
Yusei makes it to the room where she's staying but finds no one inside. "Aki?"
"Mister?" He looks back to see Haruka by the door. "Are you a friend of oneechan?"
"You mean Aki? Where is she?" he asks, a little more pacified. This goes south when he sees she is crying.
"Please! You got to help her! She saved me, and then this scary lady took her!"
"What?!"
…
"Breaking news. An accident occurred in Neo Domino City during the W.R.G.P. preliminary currently being held there. The highway has suffered substantial damage. The damage has even managed to affect the city. The Public Security Maintenance Bureau has decided to postpone the qualifying rounds of the W.R.G.P. to help the injured." This is Angela's report. Sadly, there is no mention of what caused the problem or who was involved. Since the electronics were damaged, no surveillance footage was taken. That, and the memory chips of the Diablo army had been erased like before.
All is good for the Emperors as Jose cuts the image. "Placido, always doing more than necessary."
"What are we going to do with him anyway?" asks Luciano while poking Placido's damaged body. "We don't have the means of repairing this idiot here."
"Hand him over to me." Both look over and see Paradox floating their way. She still wears the mask, hiding her face.
"Paradox? You're back already?" Jose asks.
"You say that like you expected me to be dead."
"You go to the past, lose to Yusei Fudo, and expect us to not think that?" Luciano chirps.
"Even so, the plan was wrong. So, we'll have to go with the original. But, we need all three of you in one piece." She uses her power to lift Placido's body and take him away. "I'll take him to be fixed by our God. Try not to get damaged in the process, Luciano."
"Eh? Why me specifically?" Paradox leaves.
Lightz: I hope you enjoy this chapter. Next time, we find out what happened to Aki. In truth, with the end of the Diablo arc, we can now enter the Arcadia arc. It all begins on 3/14/2024, one year after this story began.
