Walking along the grass, Saphira was feeling quite anxious about getting into the city to the temple to find evidence of any symbols that might locate the key. There was a lot of pressure on her to find it. She didn't even know what they would do if the key has been moved. After all, it could also be inside some kind of containment, like the first part of the key. And they wouldn't even know where to find it at this time. She hoped that it wouldn't be too hard, but she knew that there would be no promises. She glanced up as she saw Airazor flying above, and Stratosphere has taken off to fly as well. She smiled a little, wishing she had wings herself. It would be a freeing feeling, and she would be able to go anywhere.
She gazed around at the many ruins they pass by, feeling a sense of achievement from seeing them. She knew they weren't important to the autobots, but she knew that it was still cool to see. Though as they walk towards the edge of the hill, Saphira was starting to feel the heat and humidity. She had not noticed before, since she was still getting over the rough landing from Stratosphere, but she was certainly starting to notice now. She would ask Optimus to let her get changed very soon.
As they reach the edge of the hill, Saphira smiled as they overlook a large city. She looked around and noticed there seemed to be large crowds gathering in the streets. There appeared to be some kind of festival happening right now. Though Saphira did not think much of it, because she would be the one to get to the temple, and it was unlikely that she would be prevented from reaching the temple by the crowds. People wouldn't really notice.
"Okay, you guys, check this out…" Saphira glanced up at Wheeljack as he began to speak. "The coordinates you gave me correspond to an old church, take a look."
Saphira couldn't see very far, but she guessed Optimus was looking to locate the temple. She doubted it would be too difficult to find, though she would hope that autobots would drop her off near the temple, so she would not have to try and find it among the crowds of people. She didn't want to be embarrassed, since she wouldn't exactly know where she was going. But she would get to it no matter what.
"I believe that is Santa Domingo," Saphira said thoughtfully with a smile. "The Spanish built it on top of the old Inca Temple. I remember reading that among all the material at the library. I probably should have mentioned it…but I forgot to do that yesterday."
Optimus smiled at her, knowing that small detail was not necessarily bad. "Correcto…" Saphira looked back at Wheeljack confirming her information. "I picked up some residual energy readings around the courtyard, so I'm guessing the key is somewhere close by. But we may have some trouble getting there." Saphira knew he was referring to the crowds down below, though she did not know yet what the people were doing. "Inti Raymi, it's a festival that shuts down the whole city."
"Sounds like fun," Saphira commented as she watched the crowd. "And probably a good thing everyone is distracted. They're not likely to notice anyone just walking through the crowds casually."
"Or this could be a night mission," Mirage suggested, and Saphira immediately shook her head. "Don't tell me you're afraid of the dark…" Saphira looked at him with a sharp look, and the bot realized his words. "Oh…right…" Optimus shook his head at him. "Sorry…I forget that…that you have a good reason for it."
"And Scourge could already be here," Optimus said bluntly, looking at the city with concern. "We must retrieve the other before he does. Time is not on our side at this time." He intakes heavily and looked down at Saphira. "Will you be able to locate the temple without any of the locals noticing you?"
She nodded. "Of course. I am a human, so it is not like I will stand out. Except…" She gestured to her jacket. "I am…kind of feeling the heat right now…" She unzipped her jacket and pulled it off with a sigh. "I need to change anyway, so I at least will not look like I just came from the Arctic to them." She felt better taking the jacket off, but she quickly pulled her long sleeve shirt off, leaving her with just her singlet, which was a whole lot better. "That feels way better."
"I had been wondering why you didn't just take your jacket off when we landed before," Mirage commented with a raise eyebrow. "Though I guess the whole landing thing kind of distracted you. I don't blame you." He let out a light chuckle with a shrug. "I almost sprung a leak because of it."
Saphira snorted in amusement at Mirage's choice of words. He really knew how to be a comedian, and that was why Saphira enjoyed his company. "Great choice of words again." She looked at Optimus as he crouched in front of her. "You all can disguise yourselves at least, though. Maybe just drive me into town. But I'll get changed on the way."
"Just a word of warning though, Saphira," Arcee warned gently, making the girl look at her curiously. "There is security around the church. They might stop you from proceeding within it. So make sure you be careful to not let yourself get caught."
"Thanks for the warning." She looked back as Optimus opened his chassis for her. "I guess you will be climbing down the hill first, right?" He nodded affirmatively, gently picking her up. "Sounds good to me. But please, no jumping or tumbling, because I will not have a seatbelt on for a short time."
Optimus rolled his optics in amusement at the girl. "I am not sure what would have given you that idea, Saphira, but I would never do that to you." She giggled at him, amused she had gotten him with the sarcasm. "You will be perfectly safe, Saphira, and I will make sure of it."
"Before you go inside…" Saphira glanced at Mirage, and he appeared to be holding something. "You need something to protect yourself, in case something were to happen. So here, catch." Saphira gasped as Mirage threw something at her, and as she raised her hand to catch the silver object, and as it hit her hand, it began to transform around her hand and form into some kind of gauntlet on the back of her hand. She was surprised as she gazed at it and raised an eyebrow at Mirage. "Hey, I would think you would be grateful."
"If only you had given me this some months ago," Saphira said with a smile, and Mirage grimaced, knowing she was talking about Transit. "But thanks. Um…I guess I'll have to figure out how to use it later…won't I?"
"Don't worry about it, Saphira. It will be easy to use, I promise." Mirage winked at her as Optimus placed the girl inside his chassis. "Now I think we should head down there. We have no idea how far behind Scourge is. And I don't particularly want to be caught in another fight like last night."
Optimus nodded in agreement, closing his chassis and standing back up. "I agree. We have no time to waste." He turned to Wheeljack curiously. "Wheeljack, I assume you know how we can get down without the locals in the city noticing us."
Wheeljack nodded affirmatively, gesturing to the bots to follow him. "We want to make sure we don't leave a lot of tyre marks in the ground here. I already have done enough to the ground myself, and it will not be good if we all leave marks. But this is the easiest way to get down to the road quickly."
Saphira took her pants off and grabbed some sunscreen to begin applying to her skin. She did not know where Optimus was walking to, other than to a nearby road. She did not mind though. She rubbed the sunscreen into her skin before she pulled her singlet off to grab a green t-shirt and denim shorts. She slipped them on and she pulled her hair out to brush so she could tidy it up. She knew it was not necessary, but she did want to feel better. She took the time to brush her hair while she waited for Optimus to drive into the city.
When he did transform, Saphira was a little bit startled, but she smiled as the autobots were finally able to proceed towards the city. She was still feeling quite anxious, but she knew it was something she would need to do. "I can't believe we are here." She stared out the window as Optimus approached the city, and she was smiling a little as she continued to brush her hair. "I never thought I would get to Peru. If this was a vacation, I have heard about spectacular mountain that has multiple colours in the rock. Kind of like a rainbow within the literal earth. I would love see it for myself."
"That sounds amazing, Saphira. I never knew that there was such a place." Saphira nodded with a smile, knowing she would love to see it. "Maybe we could make a stop after we defeat Scourge and retrieve both parts of the key." Saphira did not know if that would happen, so she simply shrugged and began to put her hair into a ponytail. "I do hope that the last half of the key is here. Are you sure this was the only place on Earth with those writings?"
Saphira nodded affirmatively while she grabbed a can of deodorant. "I am positive, unless there is a hidden gem where archaeologists have not discovered yet. Though, if there is another place, it probably will still be in Peru somewhere. There are hundreds of old temples around the place, so any one of them could hold that answer. But I think we are still in the right spot."
Optimus believed that too. He did hope that the key was there, and they would be able to keep it from Scourge. Though he knew that Scourge was a very strong fighter, and he would not back down at all. So they would need to be prepared. "I guess if the key was moved, we would not know where it is. But you have helped us so much by tracking it here, Saphira. I am very glad that we got to meet a wonderful human like you."
Saphira blushed deeply at his compliment as she finished tying back her hair. "And I feel the same about you. Honestly…even if this is really a short part of my life, I will never forget it. I am just glad that I am able to help you in your time of need. You helped me, even though you did not want to at the time, so I think it is only fair that I pay that back."
"I had not really thought of this that way. But yes, I suppose that is also true." Saphira flinched as she watched his holoform formed beside her, and she could not help but throw her arms around him happily. "I can already tell this land is quite beautiful. It is nice to see mountains and trees, instead of the skyscrapers of New York city. Cybertron has no plants, so it was fascinating to see the plants when we first arrived here."
Saphira leaned back as she guessed Cybertron was mostly made of metal. But she did wonder what parts would be considered beautiful. "It is beautiful here. That is why I am quite happy to be here with you, Optimus. But I am curious…" He tilts his head slightly to hear her question. "If Cybertron has no plants, what would be considered a beautiful place on your planet? Did you have places with water?"
Optimus smiled as he thought back to Cybertron, and the many places it had. "Yes, there were many places. A lot of them were often within caverns beneath the surface of our world. We did not have water like Earth has. But…we did have crystals. They were not made of energon, but of something else." Saphira was immediately intrigued as she listened to him. "There was one in particular I remember visiting. It was a cavern with natural mist that was created by the crystals of that cavern." He closed his optics, thinking back to cave before Saphira would be startled. Her whole surrounding suddenly changed, and it took a moment for her to realize that Optimus was projecting. And he was showing her the very cavern itself. "Do not be afraid. This is from my memory."
Saphira stared in amazed at the cavern she was seeing. The ground, walls and roof were made up of rock and metal, and embedded in the rock were glowing crystals. These crystals were of different shapes, sizes and colours, though the colours were mostly white, silver, red and green. And there was a mist around, creating a blanket and hiding the ground, but the light from the crystals seemed to create a blanket of rainbow all around. It was absolutely beautiful.
"I cannot believe you were able to show this to me…" Saphira was speechless as she stared at the cave. "It…It is beautiful!" She looked at Optimus as he nodded in agreement. "Please tell me it still exists."
"I wish it was." Optimus looked at the projection he had created and it began to fade away, much to Saphira's disappointment. "Unfortunately, it had collapsed in on itself. It was due to the battles above it, and it caused the ground to become unstable and unsteady, and it just collapsed. I am sure the crystals are still there, but the cavern is not."
"Oh…that's unfortunate. But thank you for showing me." She leaned forward and kissed his cheek gently. "That was unexpected, and I am very happy you had shared it with me. I am certainly going to dream about it." Optimus hummed in amusement before they both kiss gently and Saphira caressed his back gently, and she felt his arms move around her back to do the same. "If there are any other memories of beautiful places you would like to share, I would enjoy seeing them as well."
Optimus kissed her gently and nodded in agreement. "I will certainly consider that, Saphira. After all, to me, the most beautiful thing right now is right here." He placed his hand on her chest, and Saphira felt tears welling in her eyes, because that was beautiful. "But it does bring me joy to show and share with you the beauty of Cybertron. It most certainly is not just metal and rock, because there is plenty of beauty to be found."
"Just as it makes me happy for you to enjoy the nature of this part of the world." Saphira looked out at the windows to see Optimus had entered the city, but she noticed that the other autobots were driving away. "Um…what's happening?"
"We are splitting up to cover more ground across the city. This is a strategy we have done many times before." Saphira was surprised, though it made sense. "It is doubtful that Scourge will care that there is a human festival at this time." She nodded as she knew that was the case. He seemed quite cold and uncaring from their first meeting. Optimus turned and pulled to the side in a street. "The temple is several blocks from here. You should be able to find it easily. Wheeljack provided a map to me of the city." Saphira watched as a hologram of the city formed in front of her, and she saw where they were currently. "Hopefully, the guards of the church will be too distracted so you can get in."
Saphira watched as Optimus created a yellow line in the direction of the church. She watched intently to memorize it. She made sure to not look away for a few minutes to bury the map in her mind. She smiled and looked at Optimus confidently. "I will not let you down, Optimus. You can count on my to get to the temple on time, and hopefully, find that key so you can get home."
Optimus leaned in and kissed Saphira gently, hugging her against him for a moment before leaning away. "I know you will not." He kissed her again before his holoform fades, making Saphira whimper a little, and she took a deep breath and grabbed one bottle of water and her bag before moving towards the door. "We will keep an eye out for the terrorcons. On first sign of trouble, we will go in and protect you."
Saphira smiled as she opened the door and looked at the dash. "And if you do have to do that, please try and not run anyone over. I don't really want to hear about that, or find the out later." Optimus hummed softly in amusement as Saphira climbed down. She glanced around when she jumped to the ground and sighed deeply. "Alright…and onward I go."
She closed the door and glanced around for a moment at the many excited locals who were in the streets. She took a deep breath and walked in the direction that she had seen on the map. She glanced at her hand, knowing that the gauntlet might be spotted by a random person, but she hoped someone might consider it as a toy or something, even though Saphira had no idea how to use it yet. But she was hoping she would not need to figure that out.
She walked down the street, approaching the main street where the parade was taking place, and she could feel the excitement in the air. She smiled as she could just see the dancers in the parade, and various costumes that were being used for it. It looked like a lot of fun, but she while she would get to see a little bit of it, she could not just stand and watch like she would want to. She at least was happy to watch a little bit of the parade. She did wonder what the parade was celebrating about though.
When she reached the end of the street, she looked to her left in the direction she had seen on the map, and she smiled as she saw that the temple was not far, but she would need to cross over the road to get to it. She hated pushing past people, so this was going to be awkward, among other things, as she made her way to the temple. She hoped that would not get any attention from the local authorities, because it could do that.
Saphira sighed and she began to make her way at the back of the crowd of people who were standing by the road and watching the parade. She wanted to get close to the temple as quickly as possible. She glanced at the road to see the various floats moving down the street, and she was impressed by how pretty they were. She smiled to herself as she continued to move behind the crowd before she knew she would have to cross over to the other side.
She carefully pushed through the crowd, apologizing under her breath, even though people were not happy with her as she made her way to the front. She looked towards the church and looked around for a moment. She could see the police standing around and keeping a good watch over everyone. She did look around to see if there was some other way to get over to the temple without walking through the parade, but there was not. And if there was, it would be a long way around the city, and there was no time for that.
She sighed deeply, and looked at a group of dancers walking by with a float, and she stepped out to use them as cover. She made sure to not get in the way of the dancers as she ran across the street, hoping to blend in a little bit, until she finally reached the other side. When she did, she ran down another street, feeling relieved she could get through the parade with no trouble. She didn't want to wait around for the police to chase her.
Saphira continued to run until she found an entrance into the old church. She groaned as she pushed the door open, as it was heavy and the door hinges were old. She looked around in surprise to see how old the church was, but she guessed that the church was old too. But not as old as the temple. She looked around to see where it might be, though her eyes were drawn to stone pillars in the middle of the church. She walked over to them, and they all appeared to have strange symbols on them. She grabbed out her notebook to quickly draw the symbols on the paper in case they would be important.
Once she did that, she glanced down, and smiled as she saw the circle she had seen in the books and on the internet through her research. She walked over to it, looking down at the old stonework that had been used to carve the symbols of the stones. She did not know when this was made, but it was definitely older than the church. She walked around the circle, eyeing the animal symbols around the edge of the circle, while thinking on what it could mean.
But she did notice that some of the symbols seemed to be out of place. Like they had been rotated in the wrong direction. Saphira shrugged, guessing it could not hurt to try and see if they could be turned, as she knelt down and placed her hands on it before putting some weight on it to try and rotate it. It took a moment before she felt it give, and the stone turned suddenly, which startled Saphira as she heard and felt a rumble beneath the surface of the ground, making her widen her eyes slightly. She did not even know if that was a good thing or not.
If lining them up does not do anything, I have no idea where else to look. But this seems to be the right place. I hope the ground doesn't just open up beneath me, because I do not want to fall to my death.
Saphira moved to the next plate that was not lined up and knelt down to do the same. She groaned as she put her weight and strength onto the plate to turn it, and she sighed in relief with it did move. And she quickly realized this was going to take a bit of time to do, because the stone was not moving very easily. But turning the stones and facing them correctly was doing something, and she could feel it underneath the ground.
She took a deep breath and got to work on the rest of them to line them up correctly. She tried to move as quickly as possible, but the stones were old, and it took at least a minute to turn each of the stones. And Saphira could feel the strain in her wrists and hands from turning the stones, but she was glad that they would give with some encouragement. If it took longer, she probably would have asked one of the bots for help, because she wouldn't want to sprain her wrist from doing this.
As soon as she turned the very last stone, Saphira stepped back and stared at the circle. She took deep breaths and drank some water, watching and waiting for something to happen. She frowned as nothing seemed to happen and she was about to tell the autobots, when the entire circle suddenly fell down a little bit, and she stepped back in shock. She stared as the circle began to move into a slot that had been built into the ground. She was surprised to see the plates she had turned spinning on their own, but she was daunted by what she saw.
Terrific…just terrific! It had to be a deep, dark hole! Luckily, I do have a flashlight…ugh…
Saphira looked at the stairs that moved down in a circular motion. The stairs were not wide, but they seemed to be steady and safe to walk on. But given that she did not know how deep this was, and how many stairs there were, she would need to be careful. She shivered as she walked over to the part of the circle that was still sticking out, and stepped down carefully before moving to the first stairs. She was very nervous and she held onto the top as she made her way down.
Why did it have to be big, old, stairs like these?
Saphira did her best to stay calm as she carefully climbed down the stairs, but it was extremely hard. Once she could not hold the top of the circle anymore, she had to find gaps in the earth to use to keep her from falling backwards, while also using the stairs themselves as a leverage to make her way down. She was just glad that the stairs were not slippery, because she would be in a lot of trouble, and she would be demanding that the autobots come and help her. Though she knew Arcee would be the only one, since she was the smallest. She doubted that Optimus, Mirage or Wheeljack could actually fit down here. Mirage might, but she wasn't sure. But Saphira would do what she could. She couldn't turn back now. She was certain climbing back up would be harder, so she wasn't about to try. After all, if the key was down here, she was already halfway.
