Chotu is the son of Chlun and Tartar is the son of Batarr. Both are Temutai's grandsons. Chotu and Tartar both have dark blue fur and brown horns but Chotu's horns are short and sharp and he is usually hunched over due to a birth defect and Tartar's horns are more spiral shaped and pointed upward due to another birth defect. Chotu has red eyes while Tartar has amber.
Both Chotu and Tartar were born in prison and taken from their fathers and grandfather to the prison nursery. Despite their large size, both were fearful of the prison and wanted to do anything to escape it. They joined Tayra's team of animals and managed to escape. Chotu is shown to be pleasant and benevolent but he still has wild and mischievous blood. Tartar is more reckless and ambiguous but he never goes beyond his limits and knows when it's time to settle down.
Chotu and Tartar have a close bond, being cousins and best friends.
The boys don't show any mutual affection for their fathers or uncles but do mention them occasionally.
As boys, Chotu and Tartar idolized their grandfather.

Chotu's name means small.
Tartar's name means violent tempered.
They are the only young water buffalos in the series.
