A year had passed, and Sakura's transformation was evident not only in her physical well-being but also in her spirit. The once wary and guarded girl began to open up, revealing a resilient and hopeful side of her personality.
Kakashi, in particular, became a constant pillar of support for Sakura. He listened to her stories, shared his own experiences, and offered a sense of normalcy that she had never known. Their friendship deepened, creating a bond that went beyond mere companionship.
One day, as Sakura and Kakashi sat in the Hatake living room, enjoying a quiet moment, Sakumo approached them with a smile.
"Guess what?" Sakumo said, holding a scroll in his hand.
Sakura looked at him curiously, while Kakashi raised an eyebrow.
"I'll file a petition to adopt you." Sakumo smiled at her. "Would you want to be my daughter?"
Sakura's eyes widened with a mix of surprise and overwhelming emotions. The idea of being formally adopted and becoming part of a loving family was something she had never dared to dream of.
"Dad, you want Sakura to be my sister?" Kakashi asked his father.
Sakumo chuckled, ruffling Kakashi's hair affectionately. "Well, I thought it would be nice to make it official."
"But - " Kakashi looked panicked as he latched into Sakura's hands. "I can't marry her if she's my sister!"
"Marry Sakura?" Sakumo asked. "So, you like Sakura, Kakashi?"
Sakura blushed, caught off guard by Kakashi's words. She glanced at him, her eyes wide with surprise and a hint of embarrassment. Kakashi, realizing the implication of what he had just said, also turned a shade of red.
"Dad!" Kakashi ducked his head. "I mean, not now... when I get older." he explained. "I want to marry her someday. How can I do that if you adopt her? We will be siblings."
Sakumo looked at his son seriously. "Is that the reason why you cling to her like a second skin, Kakashi?"
Kakashi scratched his head, avoiding eye contact. "Well, she's my best friend, and... maybe more in the future. I don't want her to go away."
Sakura, still blushing, looked at Kakashi with a mixture of surprise and warmth. The realization that Kakashi cared for her in such a way brought a flutter of emotions to her heart.
"Well, if that is your intent, son. I have a few ground rules." Sakumo said. "No more sleeping over someone's room. And I am moving you to the one next to me so I will know if you ever tried to sneak into Sakura's."
"Can I have Kakashi's room?" Sakura perked up. "His room is not that big so it's not as scary as mine."
Sakumo chuckled, his eyes softening with warmth. "Of course, Sakura. You can have Kakashi's room as soon as he moved to the one next to mine."
"So, you're no longer adopting her?" Kakashi asked, hoping that he dissuaded his father from making them siblings.
Sakumo chuckled at Kakashi's reaction. "No need to worry, Kakashi. If you really want to marry her and she agrees then I'll apply for legal guardianship instead." he ruffled his son's silver mane. "I'll keep your future plans intact."
Kakashi sighed in relief, while Sakura blushed even more at the mention of marriage. "We're just eight you know." Sakura elbowed him.
Kakashi winced and rub the part that Sakura elbowed. "Still. You're the only girl I like. So someday, you'll be a Hatake. But not because Dad adopted you. But because I married you. Okay?"
Sakura, caught between embarrassment and amusement, couldn't help but smile at Kakashi's earnest declaration. The idea of being part of the Hatake family, not through adoption but through marriage, felt surreal and heartwarming.
"Okay, Kakashi," she replied, her cheeks still tinged with a rosy hue. "But we're still kids. Let's focus on being friends for now."
Kakashi nodded, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Friends who might get married in the future."
Sakura rolled her eyes, but the playful banter lightened the atmosphere, creating a sense of joy and camaraderie that she had come to cherish in the Hatake household.
As they continued their conversation, Sakumo observed the interaction with a contented smile. The bond that had formed between Sakura and Kakashi, the warmth and laughter that echoed through their home, became a testament to the healing power of love and acceptance.
Years passed and Sakura grew up to be a happy girl. She flourished under the care of Sakumo and became more confident in her own skin. At 14, she's a remarkable Kunoichi and medical ninja.
"Kakashi!" Sakura ran towards him as he came back from a mission. "Are you okay?" she fussed over him. "Any injuries that I should be worried about?"
Kakashi grinned at Sakura's concern, appreciating her genuine care. "I'm fine, Sakura. Just a few scratches. Nothing I can't handle."
Sakura sighed in relief but continued to inspect him. "You should be more careful, you know. Don't push yourself too hard."
"Hey, Sakura!" one of Kakashi's teammates called her. "Aren't you going to check us too?"
"Sorry, Obito-kun! Kakashi-kun is my patient now." Sakura apologized as she continues to fussed over him.
Kakashi wrapped Sakura in his arms. "Stop fussing over me, Sakura-chan. I'm fine. I'm still going to marry you, you know."
Sakura blushed, used to Kakashi's playful declarations by now. "You never give up on that, do you?"
Kakashi smirked beneath his mask. "Not a chance." Then, he turned and glowered to Obito. "So those who are trying to woo you, they should just stop. I'll marry you in the near future, Sakura. And if you consent now, I'll marry you today."
Obito raised his hands in defeat. "I'm not saying anything."
Sakura couldn't help but laugh at Kakashi's antics. Despite the teasing, she found comfort in the familiarity of their banter. The years had solidified their friendship, and the Hatake household had become a haven of love and support.
Sakumo, who had watched the interaction from a distance, approached the trio with a warm smile. "Looks like Kakashi is still as persistent as ever."
Sakura nodded, her eyes sparkling with affection. "He never gives up, Sakumo-ojisan."
"You're going to break my son's heart, Sakura." Sakumo sighed. "Well, if he ever crossed any lines that he shouldn't and you do not want him to cross, you can tell me. I'll protect you."
Sakura smiled, touched by Sakumo's protective gesture. "Thank you, Sakumo-ojisan. But Kakashi has been a wonderful friend. I appreciate his persistence and care."
Sakumo chuckled. "Just remember, Sakura, you're a part of this family, and we look out for each other. Whether you marry him or not. In my eyes, you're my daughter, okay?"
"Thank you, Dad." Sakura tried the honorifics before hugging the man.
Sakumo returned the hug warmly. "You're welcome, Sakura."
Kakashi perked up when he heard Sakura's choice of title. "Dad?" he asked. "You called Dad 'dad'! Are you accepting my proposal now?"
Sakura blushed, caught off guard by Kakashi's excitement. "I-I just wanted to try it out," she stammered, a mix of embarrassment and amusement coloring her expression.
Kakashi grinned underneath the mask, teasing her further. "Trying out a potential future title, huh? I like the sound of it." he said.
"Dad likes me more though." Sakura stuck her tongue out to him.
Sakumo chuckled at their banter, appreciating the playful dynamics that had developed between Kakashi and Sakura. "Well, I'm honored to be your dad, Sakura. And Kakashi, I think you've found a wonderful partner, whether in friendship or something more."
Kakashi rolled his eyes, still enjoying the playful teasing. "Yeah, yeah. I'll marry her someday, just you wait."
"Woo her, Kakashi." Sakumo said. "But if you try to sneak into her room, I will personally break your legs."
Sakura laughed at the threat, her eyes reflecting a mixture of warmth and gratitude. "Thank you, Dad."
Sakumo winked at Sakura. "Anytime, my dear daughter. Now, let's head home. Kakashi, no more missions for the day. We're having a family dinner."
"Tempura?" Sakura perked up.
Sakumo chuckled. "Of course. It's my daughter's favorite food."
Kakashi sighed dramatically, but there was a subtle warmth in his eyes. As the three of them walked home together, the Hatake family continued to share laughter, support, and the promise of a future filled with love and companionship.
