I walked to the testing center, an impressive building purpose-built for this occasion. Quietly, I surveyed the surroundings, noticing a considerable gathering of people, numbering over a hundred and fifty from various villages. It was evident that the groups from each village tended to stick together. I took a seat on a bench beside Arumajiro, observing the scene. Interestingly, I noticed that Amara had slipped away at some point and was engaged in conversation with a few other ninja nearby. I couldn't help but wonder if one of them was the cause of her cheerful demeanor the day before. Glancing at my other teammate, Arumajiro, I offered a smile to my stoic friend.
"Well, it seems we have our work cut out for us today," I remarked, my tone half-serious.
"I suppose so," Arumajiro replies in his usual stoic manner, his gaze fixed on the bustling activity around them. "But we are prepared. We have trained hard for this moment."
I nod in agreement, feeling a surge of determination coursing through me. "Yeah, you're right. Let's show them what we're made of."
As we sit together, waiting for the testing to begin, I can't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. This exam is the culmination of weeks of intense preparation, and the stakes couldn't be higher.
I let my eye look from team to team, looking for strong ones or ones that look strong. I remain silent with Arumajiro, as we stay looking at the teams, drawing no attention to ourselves at least. "I think Amara-chan has a crush one someone from another team," I say, looking out for her as well.
Arumajiro nods, his gaze still focused on the other teams. "It wouldn't be surprising," he remarks quietly. "These exams bring together ninja from all over, and interactions like that are common."
I glance around, searching for any sign of Amara among the crowd. "Yeah, I just hope it doesn't distract her too much. We need to stay focused on the task at hand."
Soon, I find her, and I see who it is she is focused on, she is making idle chat with a Konohagakure team, one with a boy with a ball cut, a girl with hair pinned up in a Chinese style bun, and a boy with long hair. Observing Amara's interaction with the Konohagakure team, I can't help but notice the lingering glances she exchanges with the boy sporting long hair. His presence seems to captivate her, drawing her attention away from the impending exam. I make a mental note of the team's composition, recognizing them as representatives from the Leaf Village.
"Looks like Amara-chan's found some interesting company," I remark to Arumajiro, gesturing discreetly toward the group. "Hope she doesn't get too distracted."
Arumajiro nods in agreement, his expression remaining impassive as he continues to survey the surroundings. We both understand the importance of staying focused, especially now with the exam about to begin.
I observe as Amara approaches us, her demeanor noticeably brighter and livelier than before. With a playful grin, I inquire about her newfound acquaintances. "So, who are your new friends?" I jest, teasingly. "I think I understand what I saw from you yesterday a lot better now."
"So, you're saying you don't have a crush on that long haired konoha genin," I add in not able to stop myself from teasing her a bit more.
Amara's cheeks flush deeper as she tries to maintain her composure, though a shy smile plays on her lips. "I...I mean, he's just...interesting," she stammers, her attempt at denial failing as she fidgets slightly.
Arumajiro, usually reserved, offers a brief but pointed observation. "Focus on the task at hand, Miraju-san. The exam awaits." His tone carries a sense of seriousness, reminding both of their primary objective amidst any distractions.
I nod my head, as I am happy for my friend to have a crush, it is good for her. I get to my feet, "I think it is getting close to time for us to head to our test rooms, this is the paper test I think coming up," I reason as I think about what I read about past exams during our trip down to Konohagakure from Suna.
With a nod from Arumajiro and Amara, acknowledging the impending test, the trio makes their way towards the designated test rooms. As they walk, anticipation hangs in the air, each of them mentally preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.
I walk into the room, which is large and very well-organized. I quickly locate my seat, which is positioned away from Arumajiro and Amara. Although we had practiced some methods of cheating, I wasn't confident in my ability to execute them effectively. A week before the exam, I decided to focus solely on studying and do the best I could, relying on the other two to cover the score. However, there was always the possibility of unforeseen twists that could change how things played out, and avoiding detection was equally important.
Taking my seat, I find myself flanked by two other ninjas, both kunoichi. To my right sits a blonde whom I recognize as Temari of the Sand, a couple of years older than me and the daughter of the Kazekage. On my left sits an Otogakure ninja with long hair, wearing a serious expression.
"Hello, your Temari-san, correct," I ask, as I have never talked to the big boss's daughter before.
"Yeah, that's me," Temari responds, her tone carrying a hint of authority. "And you are?"
"I am Miraju, fellow Suna gennin," I said calmly as I looked at her with a kind smile, "Good luck, let's do Suna proud."
Temari nods in acknowledgment, her expression serious but not unfriendly. "Likewise. Let's show them what we're made of."
"And you, my lovely Otogakure friend?" I asked the other ninja next to me, figuring making introductions wouldn't hurt.
Kin Tsuchi turns to face you, her gaze sharp and calculating. "Name's Kin. And don't expect any friendly banter from me. We're here to pass this exam, not make friends." She speaks with a hint of hostility in her tone, clearly focused on the task at hand.
"True, but sometimes having friends and allies you can trust makes the world of a difference, no man is an island, we have teammates to help us accel and be our best after all," I replied with a nod, "Good luck, and hopefully you can pass this test too," I say confident in my chances to pass this paper test that I am about to get.
Kin gives you a skeptical glance but doesn't respond, her expression unreadable. She seems to be deep in thought, perhaps considering your words. As the test papers are distributed, she turns her attention to the exam, focusing solely on the task at hand.
I grab the test and start by reading all the questions backwards. I look for patterns in the test, ways the questions are organized, and any potential tricks that might be used. Despite being a bright youngster, the memory of being a bright man before inhabiting this body is slowly fading. However, the intellect has been transferred seamlessly to my new form.
I work through the test meticulously, not caring if either of the girls on either side of me cheats off me. I am confident I will pass with a high enough score. While my score may not match those of cheaters, I am unconcerned. In the end, passing is what matters, regardless of ranking.
Remaining focused, I progress through the questions one by one, swiftly selecting the best answers and providing thorough explanations. I engage in some speculation on a few questions, but it should suffice. Surprisingly, I finish before anyone else in the room, benefitting from not cheating and being able to proceed at my own pace.
I clear the desk as I lean down to rest my eyes for a bit, my test half open as I rest. I don't care, and in fact if they are caught cheating then they will be kicked out. Though I know anyone worth anything had other ways of cheating anyhow if they were going that path.
I wake up just in time for the forty-five-minute mark, catching the reveal of the tenth question by the intimidating Ibiki Morino. As he gives details about the question, I sense something amiss. The pressure feels too intense, and I can't shake the feeling that there's more to it than meets the eye. For a ninja, uncovering the truth behind the lies is paramount.
I prepare myself for the reveal, realizing that the true test might be about being willing to face the unknown and persevere. I recall the bold statement made by the young blonde boy from Konoha; it adds an intriguing layer to the exam.
Glancing around the room, I'm relieved to see Temari and Kin still present. Even more so, my two teammates are also there, ready to advance. It's been an eventful first part of the exam, to say the least.
"So, it seems we all passed," I mused aloud to the area around me, stretching my arms forward momentarily.
"Indeed, it appears so," Kin Tsuchi replied in her usual serious tone, her gaze focused ahead.
"Yeah, looks like it," Temari responded with a nonchalant shrug, her demeanor reflecting her confident and composed personality.
"Well, Temari-san I am sure you will pass this exam," I say confidently, "Kin-chan, if you get in trouble and I am nearby I am sure I can help out," I said with a confident tone showing her a thumbs up. "Though I am sure you won't need it at all."
Temari nods in acknowledgment, her expression remaining neutral. "Thanks," she replies shortly.
Kin offers a small smile in response to the encouragement. "Thanks, I appreciate it," she says softly.
Suddenly, the room falls silent as the door bursts open, and Anko Mitarashi strides in with her characteristic swagger. Her eyes gleam with mischief, and a mischievous smirk plays on her lips as she scans the room, taking in the faces of the gathered genin.
"Alright, kiddos, listen up!" she announces, her voice sharp and commanding. "Hope you're all ready for the real fun to begin!"
Anko's presence fills the room with an electric energy as she continues to speak, her tone casual yet authoritative. "Now that you've all survived the written portion, it's time for the real test – the Forest of Death!" she declares, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
She explains the rules of the second phase of the Chunin Exams with a mix of enthusiasm and intimidation, making it clear that this part of the exam will separate the weak from the strong. Her words are laced with warnings about the dangers of the forest, but also hints at the thrilling adventure that awaits.
As she finishes her explanation, Anko fixes each genin with a challenging stare, daring them to rise to the occasion. "Alright, let's see what you're made of! Meet me at the forest entrance in one hour. Don't be late – and don't forget to bring your A-game!" she declares before striding out of the room, leaving behind a buzz of anticipation and nerves among the assembled genin.
